It's Halloweennight and the door bell iscontinuously ringing. This maybe very frightening to your dogor cat or other pets. You need tobe prepared for trick or treaterson Halloween night. Have aroom set up for them and keepthem behind closed doorsduring trick-or-treating hours.Have food, water, a toy or twoand a litter box if needed all setup for them.

Here are sometips to keep your pets happy onHalloween.

As much as yourdog or cat may beg for some ofyour Halloween candy, alwaysremember that chocolate isdeadly to them in any amount. There's a chemical thatnaturally occurs in chocolatethat they can not tolerate.

The wrappers, such as tin foil, can get stuck inyour pets digestive tract andmake them ill or cause death. There are plenty of recipes formaking home made dog and cattreats, you can always makethem with a Halloween theme ifyou want to make somethingspecial for your pet.

Large dogs canhave lethal tails when it comesto wagging them. I've seen aGerman Shepherd that we usedto have clear a coffee table intwo seconds flat when she gotexcited. Don't leave any lightedcandles or Jack-O-Lanternswhere they could be knockedover by a swinging tail or by a

curious cat. Notonly could your petstart a fire butthey could severelyburn themselves inthe process.

Yousaw the cutestcostume for yourpet! Just becauseyou think a certainHalloweencostume for yourfur person is cutedoesn't mean that they willenjoy wearing it! Try it on themin advance and see how theyreact. If they don't like it, don'tforce them to wear it.

If you are goingto dress your pet in a costume, keep in mind that unless the dogor cat is extremely receptive tothis kind of thing, you could becausing it discomfort and stress. Some animals don't mind at allbut others do not want to bebothered with this kind of thing. They'll be under enough stresswith the festivities going onoutside and people constantly atthe door so don't cause themany more stress then you haveto. You may love to dress incostume but then, you aren't adog or a cat.

If a pet costumecomes with a mask, don't use it.While some dogs will lovedressing up, they usually aren'ttoo keen on masks. If you do usea mask on your pet, make surethat it's eyes have plenty ofroom to see and that there isnothin

g covering it's nose or confiningit's mouth.

Having an adultparty? Remember, dogs, cats, birds and other animals do notlike being intoxicated. Somepeople at the party may thinkit's funny to get an animal drunkor high but it can kill them. It'sbetter to hurt someone'sfeelings by telling them to leavethe party than to deal with aseriously ill beloved pet.

Ifyou are having a indoor party, make sure that you put your dogor cat in a room where theywon't be disturbed. Even if yourpet is ultra friendly and doesn'tmind loud noises, music and lotsof people you should keep themseparate for the night. Also, becareful your cat or dog doesn'tdart out through the open dooras you hand out candy. Best betis to just put them in a roomwith some food and water forthe night and check on themonce in a while to let them knoweverything is fine.

Helping your Pets GrieveDo pets grieve?

Absolutely they do. In fact, many animals, includingelephants and dolphins, haveelaborate “funeral” rituals formembers of their packs. Theycan also experience depression, but for animals in the wild, griefis a natural part of their lifecycle. They process it and moveon. They live in the moment.

Where the griefcycle gets different for pets isthat they tend to take on theirhuman survivor’s emotions.Humans are comparativelyafraid to go through the griefcycle, and therefore theyinterrupt the cycle with otherevents to avoid going throughthe needed, if painful, steps. With pets mimicking ourbehavior, you will more clearlysee many of the same steps ofthe grief cycle that weexperience. Their version ofanger and guilt will look likemisbehaving. Cats, for example, will possibly “miss” the litterbox or take to “spraying,” abehavior they haven’t done forquite some time, if ever. Dogswill potentially chew onsomething that they shouldn’t,or take on a bit more of a

“grumpy” attitude.As animals move

into the steps of acknowledgingand acceptance of the death, they will possibly stop eating, playing, or interacting withothers. Some show significantchanges in vocalization, becoming either more or lessvocal. Furthermore, thesurviving dogs may change thequantity and location of theirsleep. More than half thesurviving pets became moreaffectionate and clingy withtheir caregivers.

There are manythings that can be done to helpour other furry friends deal withthe loss of their friend, too.First of all, give them theopportunity to see and say theirgood-byes to their friend.Animals process events withtheir noses, and therefore theycan smell the scent of death. This will confirm for thesurviving animal that theirfriend has died. If it’s notpossible for the survivinganimal(s) to see their friend, geta clipping of the pet’s hair andallow the other pets at home tosniff this.

Helping Pets Grieve (cont.)You can help the

other pets in the household bykeeping their routines asunchanged as possible.Increasing their activity, through going for walks orplaying with toys, may also behelpful. This will not onlybenefit your pet, but help youtoo.

Human beingswould rather experience theemotion of denial than toacknowledge the death of a petand process all of the emotionsof this process. To a lot of petowners, this may meanreplacing the pet right away. However, bringing a newanimal into a household that’sstill mourning is not a wisething to do — for you, or foryour remaining pet. When wedo this, the animals becomestuck in our grief anddepression. If a human isn’tfinished grieving, the new orremaining animals are goingpick up on this “weak” energy. From that very moment, thatanimal could possibly find itselfin a position of being in controlof both of their lives and

becomes unbalanced.Getting another pet is likehaving a second child. Peoplehave a second child to have asecond child, not to replace thefirst child. And in anothersense, getting another pet is aTRIBUTE to your deceased pet.You received so much fromyour deceased pet, in the formof unconditional furry love, that it’s perfectly normal foryou want to experience thislove again.

The FloydCounty Animal Rescue Leaguehas a Memorial Tree that is alasting way to express devotionfor your treasured friends. Theproceeds from the tree go tohelp the homeless animals ofFloyd County get the care andhomes the deserve.
