Saturday saw us take on Hope Valley in the second semi-final at Haslam oval, with the winner rewarded with a spot in the Grand Final. Having beaten this side a few weeks ago, we were quietly confident, but knew we were going to have to be at our best as they are a team with some quality players in their line-up.

The boys were fresh after a week off and we’re fired up to continue on our winning ways. We started extremely well in the first quarter and dominated inside 50s (13-7) and scored 5.2 for the term to Hope Valleys 2.0. Our midfield were getting plenty of the ball, our defence was solid and up forward we were efficient and looked very dangerous.Unfortunately in the second quarter it all started to go downhill after our great start and Hope Valley worked hard to get on top in the midfield. We struggled to get the ball into our forward 50, made some poor decisions, over handballed, in what turned into wet, greasy conditions and we weren’t accountable, allowing the opposition to open us up through the middle. Hope Valley scored 4.6 for the quarter to our solitary 1.0. Fortunately some poor kicking from them kept us in the game and we only trailed by 4 points at the main break.

The 3rd quarter we were kicking with breeze and needed to establish a good lead going into the final quarter but it wasn’t to be with Hope Valley winning centre clearances , inside 50s and having more of the play. We did however score 2 goals to 1 for the term, due to our defence standing up very well and repelling many opposition attacks. We seemed to be running out of legs and we over used the ball, when we should have been going more direct and long to our forwards.

The last quarter saw Hope Valley run over the top of us and run out winners by 4 goals. They won the inside 50s 19-4, centre clearances 5-1 and scored 5.6 to 1.2 for the quarter. Final scores being 12.13 to 9.7. A very disappointing day after such a promising start.

Our defence again performed well, with Charles Canny being a standout, he had 24 possessions and took 8 strong marks. Tom Forster was again a valuable contributor, and Alex Rowe and Jake Van der Hoek had some good moments. In the midfield Mitch Curnow battled hard all day and took some good marks and Jaiden Pengelly had plenty of the ball (36 possesions) and worked tirelessly. Up forward Alex Forster was very dangerous and continued his great form kicking 6 goals from limited opportunities.

It was a game where many of our players had off days but I can assure you we will bounce back this weekend and leave nothing on the park. We have played some great footy during the season and earned a double chance so although we didn’t want to use it, we will welcome it with open arms. We have had a review of the game early in the week but quickly turned to this weekend and have been very positive as one bad day out of 10 is no reason for panic. This weekend we have 3 sides in preliminary finals and our goal is to have them all playing in the GF the following weekend.

See you all out at Haslam on Saturday, you will see a different side on the park this weekend. Go Kings!!

The Second Semi saw the 2 best sides for 2020 play off against each other as ever second should. We came into the game confident of a win based on the good performance against the Cats on their home deck earlier in the year. Their Coach post that game made it very clear that he believed that we were lucky to get the win that day and that they would get us next time we played … Game On. The first quarter to be frank was dominated by their midfield and they had a number of opportunities in their forward 50 but our defence was up to the task after a minor adjustment that come from the players on the ground, I love this type of leadership and ownership of the their territory and I encourage this (within reason)! We were rebounding well and our carry across the ground was good but we just couldn’t manage to hold the ball in our 50, but with a smart passage of play and some real good ball skills we managed to get the ball to Jack Wightman in his first game for 2020 in the B’s and he converted to get us up and away. The next two came from an A grader in Max Bawden who was clearly only visiting our side as he was a class above in many ways and we went into quarter time somehow on top. 3.1-19 to 2.2 – 14. From here the game fell away for us as the Woody South midfield just man handled us for the rest of the day, we performed well and in a minor round game may well have come away with the chocolates, but finals is not a environment to perform well you have to be at your best for 88 minutes. At halftime we were down by 12 points on the scoreboard but only managed one scoring shot to 8 scoring shots and went in 5.7-37 to 4.1-25. The third we were better and it became the arm wrestle that finals are but having said that only managed 1 point for the quarter where Woody South managed 1.2. 4.2-26 to 6.9-45. In the last we made a couple of changes that saw Izaak Twelftree on the board early and some promising early entries but didn’t convert and then the game faded out and Woody South came away with some easy goals to flatter their score board. The Cats spread out of the middle and the desperation, desire and want for the win was a level above ours and we have learnt from that. We will be at our best this week, we will be desperate, we will be accountable and we will be courageous because we will not accept second best.

On Saturday the Glamours came up against Pulteney in a cutthroat semi final where the losers season would be over. Coming off the back of a bitterly disappointing loss in the first final to SMOSH the boys were eager to bounce back and get our finals series back on track. The team was buoyed by a number of very handy inclusions including 4 lads who had been playing consistently good football in the B grade all season. It’s a testament to the strength of our football club at the moment and is something that will hopefully hold us in good stead for the remainder of the finals series. It was shaping up as a massive day for the club with a triple header of finals at Haslam and the chance for the C grade to earn their place in a preliminary final. After we had a resounding win in our first encounter against Pulteney earlier in the season we knew this was going to be very different. With a number of different players in each side and that usual finals intensity we knew it was going to be a tough contest from start to finish. The opening minutes proved to be just that as Pulteney came out strong and managed to kick the first goal of the game. This was the wake up call we needed and the boys came back and dominated the remainder of the quarter as we began to flex our muscles. We had 9 scoring shots to 2 in the first quarter but unfortunately some wayward kicking meant we kicked 4 goals 9 to take a 22 point lead into the first break. It was clear that we had taken control of the game as we were dominating every position on the field but now it was time step it up a gear to make sure we went into half time with an unassailable lead. As we have done so many times this season we responded to the quarter time message and came out firing in the second quarter. The midfield was dominant again with Tom Berry dominating in the ruck which meant star on baller Justin Dealiveira was able to have another blinder. A much more accurate quarter saw us kick 6.3 to Pulteneys 2.2 and our lead had blown out 47 points at the main break and our tails were well and truly up. The half time message was clear, we had to be ruthless to ensure there was no way back into the game for Pulteney. With Pulteney’s most dominant forward heading off to a state lacrosse game part way through the third quarter the Blues had lost their only weapon that was causing us trouble. Our back 6 took control from here on out with Josh Zoanetti, Jeremy May and Ben Cox providing so much drive from half back while completely dominating their opponents. We managed to keep Pulteney scoreless in this quarter while piling on another 5 goals of our own and our dominance was seriously starting to be felt. The score heading into the final break was Kings 15.11.101 to Pulteney 3.3.21.It was clear at 3 quarter time that the game was over which was exactly what we wanted before the start of the quarter. From here on out it was all about focusing on our own style of footy and making sure we were doing everything right to get us into form heading into such an important preliminary final the following week. The last quarter was another dominant one from our boys as we put on another 4 goals and managed to keep Pulteney scoreless for a second straight quarter. The Glamours ended up running out 109 point winners with a score line of Pembroke 19.16.130 to Pulteney 3.3.21. Such an impressive performance in a semi final and it was exactly what we needed to do to respond after the previous week. With SMOSH going down to Adelaide Uni by 4 points in their final we now look to SMOSH for the third time this season with the aim to pay them back for that bitterly disappointing loss in the first week of finals. With another triple header of finals at Haslam it’ll be another huge week which we cannot wait for and hopefully we’ll see all 3 grades heading into the grand finals we deserve!! Go Kings, go Glams!!
