Southern Growth Studio Graphic Designer Named One of Top 40 Under 40

OXFORD, Miss. (Feb. 17, 2009)—The Mississippi Business Journal named Oxford native JoeWorthem, a graphic designer at Southern Growth Studio, as one of the state’s Top 40 Under 40young business leaders.

Southern Growth Studio, a marketing and innovation consultancy, nominated Worthem for theesteemed award because they said his talent, drive, and commitment to his community madehim an ideal candidate.

“I’ve worked with Joe for nearly four years, and it’s been wonderful to watch him take hiswork to the next level and come into his own as a designer,” said Michael Graber, managingpartner of the Studio. “At the same time, Joe’s volunteer work in the community has been anexample for the rest of us. He sets the standard for good works.”

For 16 years, the Top 40 Under 40 program has recognized the accomplishments and contribu-tions of young Mississippi business leaders, who at a local level are aiding the state in its over-all economic growth. Worthem currently works with a team of writers, business analysts andmarketing professionals at the Studio to help Mid-South businesses innovate and grow.

From childhood, through college and now as a professional, Worthem has volunteered in hischurch and his community in east Lafayette County. As a member of Toccopola Church of theLiving God, he has participated in mission work and used his graphic design skills to driveawareness for the national church headquarters.

“I chose my career path because of my love for the arts and my interest in design from anearly age,” Worthem said. “I have helped start two businesses in my career, and one day, Imight like to do the same for myself. I also have big plans to create a marketing division formy church’s national office and possibly start some sort of non-profit organization helping at-risk youth.”

During his youth, he served as a Boy Scout and a member of the Air Force ROTC, in which heearned an American Legion award. He also began cutting and hauling firewood to the elderlyor disabled, an activity he continues today.

Worthem graduated from the University of Mississippi in 2002, with a BFA in Graphic Designand Illustration. While attending the University, he was a member of the Golden Key NationalHonor Society, Ole Miss Gospel Choir and on the Chancellor’s Honor Roll. As a student memberof the American Institute of Graphic Arts, he received several design awards, including the

Judges Award at the Memphis College of Art’s PUSH Design Conference and Competition.Working with a friend, he illustrated his first graphic novel, Dross, and in his spare time isworking to complete his second.

In his professional career, Worthem has received two Memphis Advertising Federation SilverAwards for Illustration. He served as a member of the Oxford-Lafayette Chamber of Commer-ce’s Leadership Lafayette team, a group of young business leaders who affect change in theircommunity.
