–– The Reverend Ms. Katherine H. Shaner, Minister of Mission

The Social Gospel

The views expressed in the recommended websites do not necessarily reflect the views of First Community Church.

“Is it okay if my Mom is here?” asked my daughter. She wanted to give her friend a heads up I was sitting on the couch before they proceeded with their Face Time call. I hear a loud “Sure, Hey Mrs. Shaner!” come from the voice on the screen. I sat and laughed as they talked about new love interests and shared pictures. It was very dear, their teenage excitement, such an exquisite glimpse for me into their hearts and lives.

After the call ended and my daughter went to bed, I turned my attention to the television. On the screen was a young

man testifying at a trial, a young man my daughter’s age, testifying about the night he witnessed his friend be shot and killed. His words made my knees buckle, for as the attorney asked question after question, he quietly said “I was terrified sir.”

Jordan Davis was the same age as my daughter. He has two parents who love him very much, put him in a good school and tried to do everything right, just like my husband and I. He and his friends went to the mall on Black Friday to shop, just like my daughter and her friends.

They stopped at a store to buy snacks, just like my daughter and her friends have done a thousand times. The hip hop music in the car was loud, just like my daughter and her friends like to listen to it, too. Jordan and his friends were unarmed in their car being typical teenagers, just like my daughter and her friends. The only difference between my child and her friends was they are white and Jordan Davis and his friends are black.

Michael David Dunn, 47, pulled into the store next to Jordan and his friends. He told the kids to turn down the music because he “can’t stand that stuff.” The teens refused and an argument ensued. Dunn reached into his glove compartment, took out his gun and fired 10 rounds at point blank range hitting and killing honor student Jordan Davis instantly.

Dunn then drove home, ordered a pizza with his girlfriend and never called the police, leaving Jordan’s friends, who are the same age as my daughter and her friends in terror and disbelief.

I cannot get this story out of my head. These could have been my children. Actually, they are my children and they deserve better than this.

My prayer today is for each of us to remember the words of Mother Teresa, “If there is no peace it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.” Draw them into our hearts, and walk courageously united into a world in which no child will ever have to say again, “I was terrified sir.” Our children, all children, deserve nothing less.
