For over 150 years, Gustavus Adolphus College has been educating tomorrow’s leaders to reason and act responsibly through its educational quality, accessible facilities, spiritual identity, and economic value.

Quality is a word that finds its way into many colleges’ vocabularies. At Gustavus, quality is evident in its students, faculty, facilities, and programs, leading to recognition by a host of impartial critics. Forbes.com ranked Gustavus among the top 100 institutions in the country in its college report based upon several factors, including the average amount of student debt and the four-year graduation rate. The College is also included in other national guides and rankings, for example the Fiske Guide, U.S. News & World Report’s Best College Guide, and the Princeton Review, which in addition has ranked the Gustavus Dining Service among the best in the nation in each of the past two years.

Gustavus students typically rank in the top third of their high school graduating class, and over 37 percent rank in the upper 10 percent of their class. Continuing their achievement at Gustavus, students find a challenging academic atmosphere where professors—98

percent of tenured faculty members have earned the highest degree in their field—teach all classes (there are no graduate assistants) and serve as academic advisers. Collaborative learning is the norm, with exceptionally motivated students invited to conduct research independently or with a professor.

Top quality facilities complement educational quality. The National Review College Guide declares the two Gustavus science facilities to be “the envy of other small schools in its class,” while Schaefer Fine Arts Center houses the Anderson Theatre, acoustically perfect Björling Recital Hall, Kresge Dance Studio, a MIDI computerized composition lab, and plenty of practice rooms. The Bernadotte Library provides ample study space and access to literally millions of volumes through its holdings, the MnPALS system, and LEXIS-NEXIS. Computer facilities are vital no matter what a student’s major, and Gustavus provides direct network access from more than 400 public-access terminals, with all individual student residential rooms hardwired for full Ethernet connectivity.

Founded by Swedish Lutheran immigrants, Gustavus has maintained its sense of spiritual identity through a daily service held in Christ Chapel (which many students choose to attend) and a one-course religion component built into the liberal arts core academic requirements. A Gustavus education challenges students to examine, develop, and strengthen their own spiritual and moral values, which for many students translates directly into service to others.

A number of factors combine to make Gustavus an outstanding economic value. Most importantly, Gustavus students graduate on time, with a four-year graduation rate of more than four times the national average. Moreover, Gustavus offers comprehensive financial assistance programs, including merit-based and need-based grants and scholarships.

KING GUSTAV II ADOLF: THE NAMESAKE OF GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS COLLEGE

Founded in 1862 by Swedish immigrants, Gustavus Adolphus College bears the name of the famous Swedish king Gustav II Adolf (1594–1632). Known as the “Warrior King,” Gustav ascended the throne at the tender age of seventeen and reigned from 1611 to 1632. In that short time span, he became more popular and powerful than any Swedish monarch before him. King Gustav was known as a friend of the people and a strong proponent of education. He died in battle at Lutzen, Germany, as he led his troops in the Thirty Years War, fighting for his faith and securing the future of Protestantism.

2017 COACHING STAFFBrad Baker enters his third season at the helm of the Gustavus baseball program for the 2017 season. Baker returned to coach to the Gusties for the second time last season, having previously coached in the 1981 season where he directed his team to a 16-10 overall record, including a 10-6 league mark. In 2016, Baker, a 1980 graduate of Gustavus, guided the Gusties to a 20-18 overall record and 9-11 mark in the MIAC, which tied for sixth in the league.

Gustavus reached to 20-win mark for the 11th time in 89 documented seasons of the program’s history. The Gusties also finished with a winning record for the first time since 2008. Under the direction of Baker, Gustavus improved from a .389 winning percentage in 2015 to a .526 winning percentage last

season. The Gusties also won nine of their last 12 games in 2016, including sweeps over MIAC foes St. Olaf, Bethel, and No. 15-ranked St. Thomas.

Baker, currently CEO of Craig-Hallum Capital Group, LLC in Minneapolis, is a member of the Gustavus Athletics Hall of Fame for his athletic accomplishments in football and baseball during the late ’70s and early ’80s, Baker was a four-year starter for both squads. In baseball, he earned all-conference honors as a pitcher in 1978, a second baseman in 1979, and a shortstop in 1980. He started 107 of 110 games in his career, compiling a .311 batting average and a record of 16-3 on the mound with a 3.02 earned run average. The Gusties won three MIAC titles during Baker’s career and advanced to NAIA post-season play each time. After graduating cum laude with a degree in business, Baker was drafted by the Minnesota Twins and played one year at the Class A level before beginning a 30-year career in investment banking in the Twin Cities. He has remained involved in baseball serving as a youth coach in Edina.

Baker is the 25th head coach in the 89-year history of Gustavus baseball. The Gusties have won 13 conference titles, while compiling an all-time program mark of 990–1026 overall and 629–616 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.

HEAD COACH BRAD BAKER

Jeff Baker, a native of St. Peter, Minnesota, assumed the role of assistant baseball coach at Gustavus Adolphus College in 2015 and was promoted to Co-Head Coach in 2016. Baker is a 1982 graduate of Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he played infield for the Division I nationally-ranked Golden Eagles. He has enjoyed a long career in accounting, finance, and entrepreneurial pursuits.

Baker has coached many years of high school baseball and a number of highly competitive summer baseball programs. In addition, in 2002 he co-founded a baseball training facility in Ann Arbor, Michigan

with former University of Michigan coach Chris Harrison, and former Minnesota Twins pitcher Geoff Zahn. Baker’s primary focus will be skill development of hitters and infielders.

CO-HEAD COACH JEFF BAKER

Dean Bowyer built a career record of 1064-538-7 in his 36 years as a collegiate baseball coach - 32 years at Minnesota State (formerly Mankato State) and four years at Minot State. At the time of his retirement from college coaching in 2008 his 1064 wins ranked fifth on the all-time NCAA Division II list.

Under Bowyer, Minnesota State baseball teams played in NCAA post-season competition 21 out of his 32 years with the Mavericks and his teams won at least 30 games in 22 out of those same 32 years.

Bowyer’s 32-year tenure in Mankato included a total of 22 league championships - three when Minnesota State was in the Northern Intercollegiate Conference (NIC) and an incredible 19 in the North Central. MSU made it to the NCAA post-season tournament 21 times under his tenure and three of those teams made it all the way to the NCAA Division II College World Series (1979, 1980 and 1986).

A native of Ada, Minn., Bowyer helped produce three All-America selections and many all-region and all-conference picks during his MSU career. A total of 26 MSU players coached by Bowyer were selected in the Major League Baseball draft and 46 Bowyer-produced players signed professional contracts. Two former Mavericks who played for Bowyer advanced to the major leagues. Pitcher Todd Revenig, who was drafted and signed with Oakland in 1990, debuted with the parent A’s in 1992 and reliever Gary Mielke was drafted by Texas and had a stint with the Rangers from 1987 through 1990.

Bowyer received his B.S. degree in physical education and elementary education from Mayville State in 1966 and his Master’s from MSU in 1971. Prior to working on his master’s, Bowyer coached basketball and football at Barnesville, Appleton, and Benson High Schools. Bowyer was an all-conference and all-district football player at Mayville State, where he also played baseball and basketball. Bowyer, who played professionally in the Baltimore Orioles organization for three seasons after graduating from college, was inducted into the Mayville State Athletic Hall of Fame in 1984. He built a 74-51 record in four years as head coach at Minot State prior to joining MSU in 1977. Bowyer was been named North Central Conference Coach of the Year 11 times during his career and in addition to running his own baseball camps during the summer, has served as a consultant at several clinics.

A NSIC Hall of Fame and American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame inductee and a recipient of the NCC Legacy Award, Bowyer was inducted into the Minnesota State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009.

NEW BASEBALL FACILITY

5

Gustavus Adolphus College is beginning a complete renovation of the baseball facility, Ath-letics Director Tom Brown announced Dec. 1, 2016. The $1.5 million project, which is complete-ly donor funded, will begin immediately following the 2017 baseball season.

The renovation will be completed in two phases beginning with the installation of SPRINTURF Ultrablade DFE 42 on the entire field. The new field turf will be installed and ready for use before the start of the 2017-18 academic year.

The current diamond was constructed in the fall of 2006 as a part of the campus devel-opment plan that included the relocation of the football stadium and the development of intramural fields and soccer practice fields.

“We are very excited about the opportunity to add SPRINTURF to our baseball field,” Athletics Director Tom Brown said. “This improvement will allow us to start our season earlier and to be able to play through weather issues we couldn’t with a natural grass field.”

The multi-use surface will allow the soccer programs to practice on it in preparation for op-ponents who have a turf soccer field. Club sports and intramurals will be able to use it as well. In addition, the field will be available to rent for local baseball organizations.

The immediate impact the new field turf will have on the baseball program is highlighted by nearly zero maintenance and the ability to use the field early in the season, when most nat-ural grass fields in Minnesota are dealing with soggy conditions after the snow melt. Being able to practice on the field turf during seasonal changes is viewed as a major improvement for Coach Brad Baker ’80 and his staff.

“We are committed to building a championship caliber baseball program at Gustavus,” Baker said. “In order to accomplish this goal, we need to attract the best and brightest student-ath-letes and have the facilities that allow us to put in the work necessary to build a successful program.”

Phase two of the baseball field renovation project, which is contingent on fundraising, in-cludes a covered grandstand, press box, new scoreboard, dugouts, bullpens, and an elevated berm down the first base line for spectator viewing.

“When I think about Gustavus, I think about excellence in all areas – the classroom, fine arts, athletics, and alumni support. We strive to have our baseball program on that same level. I want to thank all those who share our vision and who have contributed the funds necessary to make phase one a reality for the fall of 2017,” Baker said.

2017 SEASON PREVIEW

6

Brad Baker’s first year coaching baseball at Gustavus in over three decades (his first in 1981) proved to be fruitful last season as the Gusties posted their first winning re-cord since 2008 and moved up three spots in the conference standings. But now it’s time to turn to page to the 2017 campaign and see what improvements can be made as Baker and his staff continue to rebuild the program into a contender in the Min-nesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. This season’s journey begins tomorrow with a non-conference doubleheader against Mayville State at US Bank Stadium.

“We want to prepare the guys and help them, and put them in best position to win games, but we’re not setting any goals,” Baker said. “We’ve added a couple kids that can help us this year. Last year, we were so late from a recruiting standpoint, but this year we’ve done really well with recruiting. We’ve got a bunch of really good kids coming next year. So as I look at this year, we are going to be really similar talent-wise, but the big difference will be our mental approach, which will be much better.”

The Gusties return a wealth of experience from last year’s squad that posted the first winning record in nearly a decade. Josh Chatfield (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.) and Isaiah Welckle (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn.) paced the team at the plate last year and will once again look to lead the Black and Gold. Chatfield, a CoSIDA Academic All-Dis-trict member in 2016, posted a team-high .389 batting average in 36 games played. The right fielder tallied a team-best 51 hits with 12 doubles, two triples, one home run,

17 runs, and 26 RBI. Welckle, who earned All-Conference honors at second base, was close behind with a .365 average as he played in all 38 games. Welckle connected for 50 hits with eight doubles, 24 runs, and 16 RBI. The Minneapolis Washburn product also led the team with eight stolen bases and posted a .943 fielding percentage.

Danny Carlson (Sr., Plymouth, Minn.) re-turns as the starting shortstop after re-cording 117 assists last season, the third most in program history. Carlson regis-tered a .911 fielding percentage and start-ed all 38 games. He led the team with 137 at-bats and had a .314 average. Carlson led the team with 33 runs and added 43 hits and 20 RBI. 2016 MIAC All-Defensive third baseman Brock Peterson (Jr., Cannon Falls, Minn.) returns to man the left corner of the infield. Peterson collected 80 assists com-pared to six errors for a .950 fielding per-centage. The Cannon Falls product was also productive at the plate, hitting .287 with 35 hits, 18 runs, and 11 RBI. The opposite corner of the infield at first base will be filled by John Lundquist (Jr., Rochester, Minn.) and Logan Thomas (Sr., Lake City, Minn.). Lund-quist last season posted a .294 average in 36 games with 35 hits and 26 RBI, while Thomas hit .342 in 16 games with 13 hits and nine runs.

The pitching staff loses All-Conference ace Jacob Volness, but he is the lone depar-ture as the Gusties return the remaining roster from last season. Connor Kern (Sr., Hutchinson, Minn.) will be looked upon the lead the staff after posting a 3-2 record and a 4.39 ERA in 10 appearances and 53.1 in-nings last year. Fresh off significant playing

time as the football team’s quarterback last fall, Sam Archer (So., Zimmerman, Minn.) will also be relied on to provide pro-ductive innings on this mound this spring. Archer posted a 4-0 record and 4.50 ERA in eight appearances and 28 innings in his freshman campaign. The rest of the staff includes the arms of Sam Carlson (Sr., St. James, Minn.), Adam Stockwell (So., Apple Valley, Minn.), Kyle Pinke (Sr., St. James, Minn.), Casey Lewandoski (Jr., Fairbanks, Alaska), Jacob Braun (Sr., Wayzata, Minn.), and Mitchell Nordin (Fy., Mahtomedi, Minn.). Behind the plate will include Lukas Hanson (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn.), transfer Nolan Lepel (Jr., Plato, Minn.), and John DeMarais (Sr., Winona, Minn.).

“We’ve been pleasantly surprised with the depth that we have this year,” Baker said. “We have at least a half dozen kids that can play the outfield and it will be really competitive out there. We have some good athletes. With the pitching staff, we’ve got six to eight guys that we feel comfortable putting out on the mound.

“The guys started to get a taste of winning last year and learning how to win. We’re just going to put the guys in the best po-sition that we can, and we’re blessed to have coaches like Jeff, Dean, Bob, Matt, and Mike. They do an unbelievable job of build-ing confidence and really helping the guys from a fundamental coaching perspective. As we look forward, I feel we’re at the be-ginning of something really special.”
