Thank you for your interest in the King Center Theatre for Youth

Program. The mission of the program is to inspire, nurture and

sustain a lifelong appreciation for the performing arts among our

youth theatre patrons. This is accomplished by the diverse array of

entertaining and educational arts offerings.

Study resource materials made possible by each artist and their

management teams are being provided to augment the live theatre

Combining the virtuosity of world-class artists with the energy of rock stars, PROJECT Trio is breaking down traditional ideas of chamber music. Blending their classical training with an eclectic taste in musical styles, they make a big impact on audiences of all ages. About the ArtistsThe PROJECT Trio is a passionate, high energy chamber music ensemble comprised of three virtuosic composer/performers from Brooklyn, NY.

Greg Pattillo is recognized throughout the world for his redefinition of the flute sound. Greg was lauded by the New York Times as "the best person in the world at what he does." His groundbreaking performance videos on Youtube, showcasing "beatbox flute", have been viewed more then 50 million times. As an internationally acclaimed performer, educator, and clinician, Greg can be found both on the concert stage and on the streets, subways, and parks, sharing and preaching his sound. Mr. Pattillo currently resides in Brooklyn, NY and performs with PROJECT Trio, an ensemble of genre bending bending performers emerging from classical music roots.

An exceptionally versatile cellist, Eric Stephenson’s style ranges from classical to jazz to rock and folk. He has performed with numerous orchestras and was a regular substitute for the Cleveland Orchestra. In 2006, Eric moved to NYC and has performed with countless ensembles and spends most of his time performing with PROJECT Trio, an ensemble he co-founded.  Composing and recording is a huge part of his life.  He has engineered and mixed 5 full length PROJECT Trio albums and premiered 4 works for trio and orchestra. 

Double bassist Peter Seymour has performed with many of the world’s most highly acclaimed artists and ensembles, including the Cleveland Orchestra, New World Symphony, Houston Symphony, New York City Ballet,  Iris Orchestra and the Colorado Music Festival. He was the recipient of the Downbeat Magazine Award for Best Jazz Soloist and has shared the stage with such luminaries as Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove and Bobby McFerrin. Since the inception of PROJECT Trio, Peter has taken on many roles, including CEO, manager, and community engagement director. He lives with his wife and two daughters in Brooklyn, NY.

Pre Performance Activities:Students should have a basic understanding of the great composers and musicians of western music, like Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Prokofiev, Django Reinhardt, and Charles Mingus. Together as a class, listen or watch examples of classical, jazz, rock, hip-hop, salsa and any other genre of music that the teacher or students enjoy.

Discussion Topics:•What makes one genre of music different from another? •When music has no words what does it make you think about? •Can you recognize what instrument is playing what notes? •Does each genre of music make you dance or move a certain way? •What is it about music that you like? •What is it about the certain genre that you like?

InstrumentsHaving knowledge of the instruments in the symphony orchestra is imperative to enjoying a concert. Introducing your students to each of the instruments is a great way to engage the students and get them ready for the show.

Strings – A string instrument (or stringed instrument) is a musical instrument that produces sound by means of vibrating strings.Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Harp, Guitar, etc

Winds – A woodwind instrument is a wind instrument in which sound is produced by blowing against an edge or by a vibrating a thin piece of wood known as a reed, and in which the pitch governed by the resonant frequencies of an enclosed air column. Flute, Clarinet, Oboe, Bassoon, etc

Brass - A brass instrument is a musical instrument that produces sound by sympathetic vibration of air in a tubular resonator in sympathy with the vibration of the player's lips. Brass instruments are also called labrosones, literally meaning "lip-vibrated instruments"Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Tuba, ect

Percussion – A percussion instrument is any object which produces a sound by being hit with an implement, shaken, rubbed, scraped, or by any other action which sets the object into vibration.Cybals, Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Timpani, Piano and many many more

Vocabulary

• Music – Sound and silence organized in time• Genre - a class or category of artistic endeavor having a particular form, content, technique

The three basic and most important elements of music:• Melody• Harmony• Rhythm

Melody - Most simply put: The Tune• Melody is the lead line of a song or piece. It is the musical theme that runs through a piece of music. A Melody is the thing that ties the whole thing together and is the part of the piece that stays stuck in

your head.• Melody is horizontal.

Harmony - Notes sounding together to make a chord• It is the part of the music that fills out the melody and makes it interesting. Harmony is notes

sounding together simultaneously.• Harmony is vertical.

Rhythm - Covers everything that has to do with time.• Rhythm is the grouping of notes, beats, and measures.• Rhythm makes the music go forward. It is the way the sounds of different lengths are linked together

Post Performance Activities• Talk about the concert and what you liked about it.

• Explore and listen to all the genres of music that you heard at the concert again in the classroom.

• Make students aware of other live concerts that are happening in their community

• For students who don’t already play an instrument, help them get an instrument and private lessons

• For students who do play instruments, encourage them to put on your own concerts for their

friends and family and in their community.
