Europeans were not the first explorers!
Islamic merchants explored the Indian Ocean & started the Asian
spice trade.
Why did Europeans want to explore?
Gold – merchants wanted a quick and easy route to Asia.
They wanted the riches of the Pacific without dealing
with Muslims and Italians.
Glory – Kings who sponsored these explorations wanted
status and increased their political standing in the
European world
God – European Christians wanted to spread
Christianity and stop Islam from spreading
European Explorers and their Routes
What was the Colombian Exchange? The exchange of goods, customs, resources, and diseases between Europe and
the New World.
What was the Triangular Trade? The trade of raw materials, goods, and slaves between Europe,
Africa, and the Americas.
What was the Treaty of Tordesillas? A treaty between Spain and Portugal to divide up claims. Portugal kept Brazil and all trading rights in Asia and Spain claimed the rest
of Latin America.
