My Dear People, Today’s theme on the Readings: ALMSGIVING, PRAYER, FASTING, AND TEMPTATION As we begin our season of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving, the reading from Deuteronomy reminds us of our duty of almsgiving, that we “set [our offerings] before the Lord, [our] God, [and] shall bow down in [God’s] presence” (Deuteronomy 26:10). The reading from Romans refers us to our prayer, reminding us that “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart . . . For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Romans 10:8, 13). These are comforting words, and encourage us to ask God for what we need and to aid us in our prayer. Finally, the Gospel of Luke shows us a fasting Jesus, who was tempted as we are, and who knows what it means to be human. Someone once said that temptation arises when you’re tired and weary, and the devil comes along and makes a perfectly reasonable suggestion. Jesus shows us that, with his help, we too can overcome our temptations, reasonable as they may sound. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

As Jesus fasted for 40 days in the desert, the Church traditionally fasts during Lent. A form of bodily prayer, fasting and abstinence in union with other Christians reminds us of our utter dependence on and love for God. A gesture of repentance, fasting is symbolic of a change of heart as

we turn away from sin to live in fidelity to the Gospel. Lenten Regulations: Fasting: Ages 18-59 fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, limiting themselves to one full meal and two smaller meals each day, with no snacking between meals. Abstinence: Catholics age 14 and older abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent.

Good Sunday to all of you! Lent is a season filled with His grace, a perfect time to seek God’s counsel. This year, instead of simply giving up sweets, we are being challenged by many to seek a deeper and more permanent relationship with Jesus and His Church. Is that something you have considered? What a wonderful outcome if we could use this sacred time to become more like that person the Lord created us to be, “the best version of yourself”, as Matthew Kelly has termed it. Lent is set aside by the Church as a time for change and spiritual growth, both a gift and a journey. Below are two outstanding books from Dynamic Catholic for your consideration as a way to begin this pilgrimage from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday. 1. Rediscover Catholicism, by Matthew Kelly. This book “takes

us on an adventure of life-changing proportions” (from the back cover, and seemingly true).

2. Resisting Happiness, by Matthew Kelly. I have recommended this one before and do so again. It brings us to the realization of an all too common human practice.

Let’s make this Lent “one-for-the-books”!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Often, when a family keeps vigil around a person who is preparing for death, they may notice three interwoven activities. First, the dying person may become more prayerful and reflective than ever before, reviewing life’s journey in gratitude to God, or seeking forgiveness and making amends for wrongs. Second, as death approaches, the need to eat and drink is lessened until even an ice cube brushed against the lips is satisfying. Third, persons who are dying often make plans to give their possessions away, making bequests, handing treasures down, providing for favorite charities. Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving: with these three “pillars” of Lent, we rehearse our death every year in this season, and anticipate the final work we will do in this life. And every year, at the end of our journey, is the joy of Easter and the experience of the victory of Christ over death’s darkness and power. Annually, we remind ourselves that the Christian experiences the same power and presence at the end of life’s journey: Christ to the rescue and the lasting joy of heaven. —James Field, Copyright © J. visits our church feel welcome and may the beautiful surroundings and joy from our parish fill the hearts

and spirits of all. As we build our new church in your honor, we ask you Lord to open our eyes to your

countless gifts and, with a spirit of gratitude, help our community to make a joyful return to you.

Believe and Grow Together!

A sacred and inspiring permanent church is coming!

Please join the STM Parish family in prayer as we continue on our

journey toward building our sacred space. Thank you to all who have contributed toward the campaign. We have raised the most money ever in

our parish history, but there is more to be done.

FLU SEASON ETIQUETTE

With the arrival of the cold and flu season, we thought we would provide some helpful guidelines for your

participation in the Liturgy. If you are sick, please stay home. Please remember that it is not a sin to miss Mass

because you are sick. If you are attending Mass, please be understanding if your neighbor is choosing not to shake hands. A simple gesture like a smile or bow of the head would be appropriate to demonstrate the mutual charity celebrated at that time during Mass. During this season, please strongly consider receiving the Eucharist in the

hand only. Receiving the Eucharist under both species is up to the individual. It is important to remember,

however, that Christ is truly and completely present under each of the sacramental signs of either bread or wine.

Therefore, if you are ill, please consider refraining from the cup during this flu season.

Our Annual PSA drive began last week. Thank you so much to those who have already pledged or donated to support the mission of the church in our diocese through their commitment to our 2019 Pastoral Service Appeal. Every household is encouraged to show that they are Proud to be Catholic by supporting this appeal. No gift is too great or too small and every dollar helps. Once we have met this assessment of $134,000, the donations will be returned to our parish to the capital campaign to build our new church. PSA envelopes are at the back of the church and in the church office and can be returned in the collection basket or brought directly to the church. We take cash, checks, credit cards, and even stocks and remember your pledge can be divided into 10 monthly payments if that is easier for you. Please consider donating today!
