PASTOR’S POTPOURRI – THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR OF GRACE 2016

People cannot live without hope. The season of Advent – in the Old Testament Readings - celebrates our ancestors in the faith who hoped for the coming of the Messiah. We know that He has come and will come again in glory. So we wait now in joyful hope for that second coming of Christ the Lord.

Advent has a two-fold character for it is a time of prepara-tion for the Solemnity of Christmas, in which the First Com-ing of the Son of God to humanity is remembered, and like-wise a time when, by remembrance of this, minds and hearts are led to look forward to Christ’s Second Coming at the end of time. For these two reasons, Advent is a period of devout and expectant delight. I like to think of it as the loveliest season of the year. We will listen to the Gospel of Luke in this year of grace as we have said goodbye to the Gospel of Mark from last year.

This year an added dimension comes to us in Advent. On December 8th, The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, we mark the 50th anniversary of the closing of the Second Vatican Council and the beginning of a Jubilee Year of Mercy declared by Pope Francis. We will celebrate on the 13th, the blessing of the Holy Door at St. Jude…to be desig-nated our DOOR OF MERCY. When we walk in and out of church through this door we will be reminded of the tremen-dous mercy with which our God cares for us. During the Jubilee we want the words of Luke 6:35 to echo in our own hearts: BE MERCIFUL AS YOUR FATHER IS MERCI-FUL. In order to do this, we must reclaim the Word of God, quiet in prayer in which God speaks to us, and silence. Let us adopt mercy as our lifestyle.

Each weekend in the bulletin, you will find the readings for daily Mass and especially for Sunday. During this Jubilee Year of Mercy, why not read those readings so you will know them when you come to Mass on Sunday…expecting the Lord to expand your understanding of these scriptures to guide your living a merciful life. If you are already doing this, then you know how powerful it is. If you are not doing it yet, why not start now? You will be amazed how much it will strengthen your spiritual life and your love of the Word of God. Happy Advent!

— Fr. Bob

A Big Thank You to all our current Liturgical Ministers, with-out your help our Liturgy would be lacking. An ideal number of Extra Ordinary Ministers of Holy Eucharist (EME’s) would be enough people to cover a three week period without repeating. This would mean we would have 30 EME’s at 5:00pm, 18 at 7:00am, and 36 at the 9:00 and 11:00am Masses. We are also very short on Greeters, Ushers and Lectors at all the Masses.

Please contact Deacon Mike at the Community Center with any questions.

Wednesday morning Bible Class has completed the series on St. Paul's first letter to the Corinthians. On December 9th we will have our annual Christmas soup party. We will watch the “The Story of the Nativity” told by several of the teachers of the Catholic Biblical School. Bring a can of soup (please no cream soup) to share. We

meet at 9 am all are welcome.

After the holidays weʼll study St. Paul's second letter to the Corinthians. Watch the Bulletin for the starting date. If you have

any questions call 303-233-3372

Did you know??? Are you ready to celebrate the beginning of a new year? We have so many different years. We have the school year, the fiscal year, the calendar year and the most important is our Church or Liturgical Year.

When we were baptized we were called to walk in the foot-steps of Jesus and our Church Year provides us with a way to walk with Jesus.

Advent is the first season of our Church Year and begins four Sundays before Christmas. During Advent the baptized are called to remember that each day we are called to prepare the way for Jesus to return. How will you prepare this Advent for Jesus to return?

The Advent Wreath The wreath's symbolism of the advent (coming) of Light into the world is clear. The gradual lighting of the four candles, one on each Sunday of the Advent season, combined with the liturgical colors of the candles (purple is the penitential color used during Advent and Lent; rose is a liturgical color used only on Gaudete Sunday in Ad-vent and Laetare Sunday in Lent) help to symbolize not only our expectation and hope in Our Savior's first coming into the world, but also in his Second Coming as Judge at the end of the world. The wreath itself is also symbolic. The circle of evergreen in which the candles are placed represents everlasting life. The seedpods, nuts and cones used to decorate the wreath are symbolic of resur-rection, and fruits represent the nourishing fruitfulness of the Christian life.

“THIRST” Steubenville of the Rockies Youth Conference for incoming 9th-12th graders (next fall) is fast approaching. This is a annual event that attracts over 2,400 teens and chaperones to a conference center near DIA airport for one weekend. During this weekend we get to take part in Recon-ciliation, Mass, Adoration, National Catholic Speakers, and some amazing Catholic music. The groups are placed in hotels for the

weekend and 4 meals are provided. This weekend is not until June 2016 (24th-26th) but this fills up quickly. We are asked by the Archdiocese to make a deposit that is due in January, so we are asking that in order to attend this amazing conference with us, you fill out the registration form and send it in by December 23rd to secure your space, along with a $60 deposit. The total for this confer-ence will cost $225 which includes a group t-shirt. Please see the packet on the youth shelf in the gathering space for more information. The final payment of $165 will be due in April, we encour-age you to participate in fundraisers to offset costs. Trust me, this conference is worth it! Last year we took 23 people, it would be awesome to see many of you participate again.
