Binghamton Firefighter/Paramedic John Janos was laid to rest on the morning of Wednesday April 10th, 2013 following his line of dutypassing in the early morning hours of Saturday, April 6th. According to press reports shortly after midnight on April 6th, crews were dis-patched to 23 Henry Street for a report of a fire alarm activated.

Frewsburg, NY - On March 31, 2013, the Frewsburg Fire De-partment was dispatched at 10:02 a.m. for a structure at thecorner of West Main Street and Center Street. Car 341 re-ported a working structure fire. Mutual aid companies re-sponded from Kiantone, Falconer, Kennedy, Busti andLakewood. The fire is under investigation.

South Lockport handles one car versuspower pole and tree

South Lockport volunteerswere dispatched to a one car acci-dent on Upper Mountain Road.Chief Derek Caldwell was advisedit was a car versus tree. On scenewithin minutes Chief Caldwellfound the car went off the road,glanced off a tree and then snappeda main power pole that was housingthree transformers. The car thenwent forward and hit another treehead on.

Niagara County Sheriff's De-partment units were on scene pro-viding road control until fire policearrived. As Caldwell was gearingup and his ambulance and truckswere rolling into the scene, one of

the transformers blew and startedleaking a clear liquid to the ground.

Chief Caldwell had fire controltone out Wrights Corners for firepolice assistance at Stone Road andUpper Mountain.

The victims in the car wereamazingly walking and were re-moved by deputies to the other sideof the road for safety.

NYSEG responded on an emer-gency mode and were on scenemaking repairs as emergency crewswere still providing aid to the vic-

tims. Both the driver and passenger

were luckily not seriously hurt.They both ended up signing offfrom transport.

The driver told the deputy thatshe got her sleeve caught on the cupholder and she and her passengerboth were looking down to see whatwas the problem, when she went offthe road and traveled a good dis-tance striking, crunching, breaking,snapping and hitting head on.

The road was shut down forabout an hour while repairs weremade.

Troy, NY. A woman that was trapped inside of her home anddied of her injuries. She was trapped behind steel doors withbarricades and firefighters were forced to chop through thewall. Once inside, they were able to retrieve the trapped elderlywoman. Carrying her in a stokes basket, they delivered herwith their oxygen mask on her face to an awaiting ambulance,where she was rushed to an area hospital. When crews ar-rived, they found heavy black smoke coming from the singlefamily structure that sat up on a hill.Troy's Fire Chief ThomasGarrett stated that the structure would most likely be a totalloss. New York State K-9 and OFPC were on the scene as well.

On the afternoon of March 8th, Middlehope firefighters were toned out for a two car accident onRoute 9W at the intersections of Route 32 and Interstate 84. They arrived to find a Verizon truckhad collided with a station wagon. The driver of the wagon was transported to a local hospitalby Town of Newburgh Emergency Medical Services, but the injuries did not appear to be serious.

Fast work made of vacant in BuffaloBuffalo firefighters of the 3rd

Battalion 4th Platoon were calledout to battle a blazeat 86 Wick St. onBuffalo's east sideon April 4th.

Engine Co. 22,which is a blockaway, made fastwork of the fire.The captain of En-gine Co. 22 re-quested the balanceof a full box.

One firefighter was trans-ported to the hospital with in-juries. The cause of the fire isunder investigation.

Damage was listed at $2,500to the building and $0 to the con-tents. The structure was a vacanttwo and a half story framedwelling.

On March 20, 2013 at a little before midnight, a large buildingerupted in flames bringing mutual aid to Beacon. The BeaconFire Department arrived at 668 Wolcott Avenue, the site of theformer Craig House, to find a large vacant building with heavyflames. Access to the building was a problem and a defen-sive attack commenced. Fishkill Fire Department and BeaconAmbulance assisted at the scene. Glenham and Romboutstood by at Beacon. The building was a total loss and the fireis under investigation by local officials.

Collier conditions in Buffalo

Buffalo firefighters of the 4th Battalion 2nd Platoon werecalled out to battle a structure fire at 418 Busti Ave. on Buf-falo's west side on March 22nd. Firefighters encountered col-lier conditions throughout the structure and the chief pulledcompanies out several times. It was reported occupied. Adog perished in the blaze and two firefighters were injured,one requiring transport to the hospital. Damage was listed at$50,000 to the building and $10,000 to the contents. Thecause of the fire is under investigation. The neighboringstructure also sustained exposure damage.

East Chatham, NY.On March 13, 2013, East Chatham Car 2 didn't have far to go to respond toa rollover accident. The accident occurred in front of the East Chatham Post Office on Route295 and the vehicle ended up in his driveway. Columbia County 911 dispatched East Chathamfirefighters and Chatham Rescue at 7:52 a.m. for the one car rollover accident. Reports fromthe scene advised that a lone female was westbound on Route 295 by the East Chatham PostOffice when she struck black ice, crossed the roadway and struck a culvert and flipped over.The vehicle landed on its roof. A helicopter was placed on standby, but was not needed.Chatham Rescue transported the driver to Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, MA. The Co-lumbia County Sheriff's Department investigated. East Chatham firefighters were back in serv-ice at 8:51 a.m.

Firefighters are Grand MarshalsSyracuse, NY. Syracuse is

known nationally, and beyond, asOrange Country, based on the fameof Syracuse University sportsteams. However, the city has a richIrish culture, as evidenced by aneighborhood known as TipperaryHill, where a traffic light has thegreen light above the yellow andred on all four sides.

More than 30years ago, NancyDuffy, one of themost honored broad-cast journalists inCentral New Yorkand an active com-munity leader, had adesire to promoteIrish culture andheritage in the Syracuse area. Fromthat desire, a St. Patrick’s Day pa-rade was born.

It is now, after 32 consecutiveyears, the second largest event ofits kind in the Northeast. A promi-nent local person, of Irish descent,is chosen each year as the parade’sgrand marshal.

In 2012, the selectee was theHonorable Charles “Charlie” T.Major. Major served as a town orvillage justice for 12 years, fol-lowed by a 14 year stint asSkaneateles town supervisor.Major then became a justice on theNew York State Supreme Court forthe fifth district. Judge Major’s in-volvement with the SkaneatelesFire Department has also been ex-emplary.

In his earlier time with the de-partment, he served as: secondlieutenant, first lieutenant and cap-tain of Hose Company #1. Thisyear, he will celebrate 54 yearswith the department, and still re-sponds to alarms and rides the ap-paratus.

According to Kathy Buff Mur-phy, another veteran Skaneatelesfirefighter, “Charlie is just one ofthose ‘behind the scenes’ guys.Wish we had more of him around.”

This year’s grand marshal alsocomes from the legal fraternity.Thomas J. Maroney is a past U.S.Attorney for New York’s northerndistrict, and also Professor Emeri-tus at the Syracuse University Col-lege of Law, where he taughtConstitutional Law, among othercourses.

One of his many successfulformer students is Vice PresidentJoe Biden. Maroney and his wife,Dr. Mary Kay Maroney, are bothmembers of the Fayetteville FireDepartment. Tom is a fire policeofficer, and Mary Kay the “Distin-guished Emerita Professor and Di-rector” of Nursing at UticaCollege, volunteers as a crew chiefand EMT with the department’sambulance.

The residents of OnondagaCounty are extremely fortunate tohave people the caliber of the Ma-jors and Maroneys volunteer theirtime and talents for the bettermentof the community.

Members of the local fire serv-ice are extremely proud of thesetwo gentlemen and the recognitionthey have received.

Buffalo firefighters of 3rd Battalion 4th Platoon were calledout to battle a blaze in a two and a half frame dwelling at 261Stevens St. on Buffalo's east side on March 28th. The firestarted in the second floor. No injuries were reported and thecause of the fire is under investigation. Two-one and threequarter inch hand lines were used along with 40 feet of lad-ders. Damage was listed at $45,000 to the building and$15,000 to the contents. The structure was occupied.

Lima, NY - On Sunday night, March 31st, Lima Fire and EMS responded to an MVA with en-trapment on Route 15A south of the village. A vehicle struck a utility pole, bringing live wiresdown. Workers from National Grid disconnected the power, allowing firefighters to safely ex-tricate the driver from the wreckage. Mercy Flight Central transported the driver to Strong Me-morial Hospital in Rochester. The cause of the crash was under investigation by the LivingstonCounty Sheriff's Office and the New York State Police.

Syracuse, NY - On Friday morning, March 29, a Signal 99 wastransmitted for an apartment building fire at the Hedgewood Apart-ments, 504 West Brighton Avenue. Fire units arrived on location tosmoke showing from a two story apartment building. The blazewas quickly extinguished. There were no injuries. The cause of thefire remains under investigation.

Answering his final alarm in BinghamtonBinghamton Firefighter/Para-

medic John Janos was laid to reston the morning of WednesdayApril 10th, 2013 following hisline of duty passing in the earlymorning hours ofSaturday April 6th.

According topress reportsshortly after mid-night on April 6th,crews were dis-patched to 23Henry Street for areport of a firealarm activated. Onscene crewsclimbed at least five flights ofstairs to check for fire and clearthe alarm.

After returning from the call,Firefighter Janos mentioned hewasn't feeling well and returned tohis bunk. He was found deceasedstill in his bunk shortly after 7a.m. later that morning. A prelim-inary cause of death was ruledheart related, but a complete re-port will take several weeks.

At the time of his passing FFJanos was 57 years old. Fire-fighter Janos was hired by theCity of Binghamton Fire Depart-ment in 1988 and served honor-ably for over 24 years.

He was assigned to Quint 21-3 at the West State Street fire sta-tion. During his career, FirefighterJanos served as a paramedic andhazmat specialist. He also servedseveral years as the Union Presi-dent of Binghamton Fire I.A.F.F.Local 729.

To all who knew FirefighterJanos, he was known as a personwho was always willing to help.Whether it was on or off the job,he would be the first one to stepup to the plate. He was alsoknown as a loving family man andFirefighter Janos leaves behind awife of 34 years, two sons and adaughter. He will be greatlymissed by family, friends and fire-

Jefferson battlesworking fire

Jefferson, NY. Around 8:30p.m. on the night of March 21st,Schoharie County 911 toned Jef-ferson Fire Department to a re-ported structure fire with smokeand flames showing on StateRoute 10 near Main St.

Chief 1011 within minuteswas on the scene confirming theworking fire and requested mutualaid from Summit and Stamford.

Incident command foundheavy fire on the C side of the twoand a half story, single familyhome with heavy black smokepushing the second floor A side.

E-1023 and T-1041 went towork on the blaze under the inte-rior command of Assistant ChiefW. Bivona. The first line wentright to work on the second floor.

crew knocked down all the fire onthe second floor as a second crewworked the C side. Stamford's lad-der aided with ventilation.

Summit provided E-1621, T-1641 and manpower. Stamfordhad a ladder and a tanker. Daven-port and Charlottesville aidedwith tankers to the scene. Manyother departments aided withstand by and fill in's.

Jefferson's E-1021 was seconddue and E-1022 went to a fill siteat a local pond. Jefferson andSummit EMS squads aided aswell.

Churchville, NY. A man was killed by a train on March 3 just outside the village on SanfordRoad North. Fire and EMS responded for a male struck by a train. Arriving units searched forseveral minutes before locating the male who was deceased. The rail line, owned by CSX, hadthe train stopped. An ambulance was called for the engineer, who was distraught. The Mon-roe County Sheriffs Office was conducting an investigation.

Members of the West Haverstraw Fire Department conducted a very challenging extricationexercise at the Rockland County Fire Training Center in Pomona as part of their weekly train-ing session. The scenario began as a national police chase resulting in a violent accident withone car with four victims on top of a second car, severely injuring and trapping the driver ofthe lower vehicle. Members stabilized the upper vehicle, extricated the victims and then dis-entangled the driver of the lower vehicle.

2013, Columbia County 911 dis-patched Tri-Village firefightersand Chatham Rescue at 4:41 p.m.for a reported residential structurefire at 509 Bashford Road in theTown of Chatham. A FedEx driverreported the fire.

Tri-Village Car 3 requestedmutual aid from Niverville andNorth Chatham. Nassau was thenrequested to standby in their quar-ters. Command requested a tankerresponse from Battalion 5.

This brought additional

tankers from the Austerlitz FireDistrict, Canaan, East Chatham,Lebanon Valley, Red Rock andNorth Chatham. Command also re-quested Valatie with their ladderand Ghent to the scene.

Tri-Village Car 3 sustained re-ported burns to his hand and wastransported to Albany MedicalCenter by Chatham Rescue.

The New York State Police and

Columbia County Sheriff's Depart-ment were on the scene. ColumbiaCounty Fire Coordinator JohnHowe was also on the scene.

Garage fire sends one to hospital in ChiliChili, NY. The Clifton Fire De-

partment was dispatched with au-tomatic mutual assistance fromChili for a reported garage fire at3871 Union Street on the afternoonof March 14th.

The initial call reported a man,who dropped a torch and thenheard a small explosion.

The first arriving Chili Chief,Jason Elliotto said, "initial effortswere focused on cooling and pro-tecting the home before extin-guishing the garage, which was

fully engulfed in flames." Addingthat the "quick response saved thehouse."

High winds and a dead hydrantrequired an additional engine to thescene.

Spencerport Fire Departmentfilled in during the two hour inci-dent that closed SR259.

The Town of Chili Highway

Department brought in a backhoeto raze the structure as it wasdeemed unsafe to leave standing.

Two people, who were home atthe time of the fire, were trans-ported by Chili Ambulance to alocal hospital with unknown in-juries. The American Red Crosswas on scene to assist the family.

The Monroe County Fire Bu-reau fire investigation team wasconducting an investigation.

Rapids rolls up to working windwhipped house fire

Chief Barry Kobrin rolled up toa working house fire at 6565 Robin-son Road.

Heavy black smoke was beingblown across Robinson Road andfire was ripping through the rear ofthe house with an SUV in the drive-way.

Chief Kobrin called in mutualaid from South Lockport volunteersand Clarence Center for their FASTteam. Rural Metro EMS rolled ontothe scene with two ALS ambulancesto stand by.

Rapids first in engines had as-sistance from the Niagara CountySheriff deputies, who pulled fiveinch main feed hose to the hydrantsfor fast water supply. As crews madetheir way to the rear of the house, therear tires on the SUV exploded andcaused a few tense moments.

Hand lines were used to try andstop the spread of the fire, but as thefirefighters made their initial attack,the roof of the rear building fell in.Firefighters got the fire in the vehicle

out before the gas tank could ex-plode. The rear firefighters thenmade their attack against the rear ofthe house, blowing it back to theburnt out area.

Attack teams from the front hitthe deck and made their way into thehouse below the billowing blacksmoke. South Lockport A8 aerialpulled up and laddered the roof,which allowed for ventilation.

Clarence Center set up a rearand front FAST team to assist. A fewfirefighters were attended to at thescene and rehab was set up to mon-itor all firefighters.

Niagara County origin andcause were called to the scene to in-vestigate. The Niagara County Sher-iff's office was on scene to take thereport.

On March 23,2013 at 5:20 a.m., Windham Hose Company under the command of Fire ChiefMichael Scarey responded to a fully involved condominium fire at Windham Mountain Village.When dispatched, the caller stated there were already flames showing. The unit was unoccu-pied. First arriving units reported a heavily involved fire already coming through the roof. Hen-sonville Hose, under the command of Chief Dave Sherman was dispatched for mutual aid. Thefire was brought under control in approximately 45 minutes, however units remained on thescene long after to check for hot spots or rekindle. Greene County Sheriff's Department andfire investigators responded to the scene to determine cause and origin. Windham Ambulanceservice was on location to assist, but there were no injuries.

Rochester, NY. The Rochester Fire Department was dis-patched to multiple calls for a house fire late on the after-noon of March 25th at 68 Myrtle Street. Engine 5 (Group 3)was on location with a working fire in a two and a half dou-ble occupancy. Heavy smoke and flames filled out the as-signment. A temporary pump problem with E5 brought E10 tothe scene. The fire was under control in about 30 minutes.No injuries were reported and the fire was under investiga-tion by the Rochester Fire Department. The building did havea premise warning that was conveyed to responding units asan abandoned structure.

Vacant burns in Rochester

East Rochester, NY. The East Rochester Fire Department wasdispatched to Legion Eyer Park to assist ER Ambulance andpolice for a man trapped in a crevasse. 3C10 arrived on sceneand requested assistance from Pittsford Fire Departmentwith the use of their off road vehicle. The victim was extri-cated with a stokes basket to the awaiting ambulance andPittsford was canceled. There was no indication how the manbecame lodged in the crevasse or his injuries.

Rush, NY - On March 14, 2013 at 3:55 p.m., a two vehicle headon crash was reported on Rt 15A. Rush Pumper 582 and Res-cue 588 with A589 were alerted to the scene. Asst. Chief JakeVogt reported one person seriously trapped. Two patientswere transported ALS via Henrietta Ambulance and one pa-tient went BLS via Rush to Strong Memorial in Rochester,with non-life threatening injuries. According to the MonroeCounty Sheriffs Office, one driver crossed into the other lanedue to driver inattention.

Firefighters save cat and battleblaze in City of Newburgh

City of Newburgh, NY. At alittle before 9 a.m. on April 2nd,the City of Newburgh was alertedto a fire at 109 MontgomeryStreet. They arrived to find verysmokey conditions in the struc-ture.

Second alarm mutual aid com-panies were quickly alerted, bring-ing Stewart's Air Guard, WestPoint and Castle Point. Smokewas billowing from the eves of the

structure. Firefighters pulled mul-tiple lines and through the use ofladders, firefighters were able toaccess the seat of the fire.

The fire was deemed undercontrol and overhaul commencedat a little after 10 a.m. An investi-gation into the cause and origin of

the fire is under way by investiga-tors.

Two cats perished in the fire,but a third was revived through theuse of oxygen with an animalmask. That cat was transported infair condition by 1st ResponderPhotographer Bob Root to Flan-nery Animal Hospital and perkedup during transport.

Car versus fuel truck in ForestburgAt 7:30 a.m. on March 22,

Sparrowbush Fire Department wasdispatched under inter-county mu-tual aid to Forestburg in SullivanCounty for an MVA involving anoverturned fuel delivery truck anda passenger car with entrapment.

Crew from R-848 arrived onscene with 41-1 and popped thedriver’s door on the passenger carand assisted EMS with passengerextraction. After this assignmentwas complete, the crew was as-signed to assist Forestburg andMonticello on hazard control of

the leaking kerosene from theoverturned truck. Crews assistedwith placing spill absorbent padsand booms. The crew also assistedin slowing the leak on the seam ofthe tank.

Sparrowbush was also dis-patched for fire police to shutdown the highway at the Countyline while crews worked to clearthe roadway of debris and fuel.

They were assisted in this en-deavor by fire police units fromPort Jervis

Both drivers were transportedto Catskill Regional Hospital inHarris. The driver of the passengercar had non-life threatening in-juries. The driver of the truck, whowas walking around at fire depart-ment arrival, was eventually air-lifted from the local hospital toWestchester County Medical Cen-ter for a possible broken neck.

Buffalo Fire Commissioner Garnell Whitfield unveiled two new vehicles on March 15, 2013 thatwill be added to the city's firefighting fleet. The first rig is a new Field Communication Unit thatwill be used as a mobile command post at incidents and events. The truck was purchasedusing a Federal Urban Area Security Initiative Grant and features a link that will enable the ErieCounty Sheriff's helicopter to send a real time video to the rig. The second rig is an AmericanLaFrance 93 foot mid-mount aerial truck. It will be assigned to Ladder 4 at Rhode Island andChenango Streets.

Wheatland, NY - In these times of sagging volunteerism, mu-tual aid is a common occurrence in Monroe County. OnMarch 18th, Scottsville Fire Department was dispatched fora car on fire in a garage. Also dispatched and respondingwere Rush, Mumford, Caledonia and Henrietta Fire Depart-ments. The first arriving chief reported the fire was out bythe homeowner with a fire extinguisher.

Buffalo firefighters of the 3rd Battalion 3rd Platoon werecalled out to battle a blaze in a 20 x 40 garage at 25 Clare St.on Buffalo's east side, which caused $40,000 in damage tothe building and $20,000 to the contents on April 2. The firealso caused damage to 19 Clare St., 911 Clinton St. and 915Clinton St. totaling $22,000. Firefighters used two-two and ahalf inch hand lines and two-one and three quarter inchhand lines as well as a ladder pipe. No injuries were re-ported and the garage collapsed a short time into the fire.Also power lines fell, energizing a fence. The cause of thefire is under investigation.

On March 18, 2013 at 6:48 a.m., the Rush Fire Department re-sponded to Interstate 390 norrthbound at milemarker 60 withPumper 582 and Ambulance 589 to a reported vehicle fire. 5-C-38 was on location at a fully involved vehicle. The fire wasknocked down in 25 seconds with another ten minutes to over-haul. For every minute the Sheriffs stopped traffic, the trafficjam backed up one mile. For every minute they blocked theroad. They used 200 gallons of water and half a gallon of foam.

Car fire on Interstate 390

High winds, snow and ice made for a four vehicle and a trac-tor trailer accident on the Skyway Bridge at the Seneca St.off ramp on March 19th in Buffalo. An engine, ladder, Rescue1 and the 3rd Battalion Chief were dispatched. 3rd BattalionChief Mike Biasillo requested an additional engine and lad-der due to multiple victims. Engine's 1 and 2, Ladders 2 and5, Rescue Co.1, the 3rd Battalion Chief and F-20, the EMS of-ficer of the 3rd Platoon responded. Four of the patients weretransported to hospitals. The others signed off. The bridgesnorthbound lane was closed for about an hour.

Stand-up Comedy Show Fund-raising

Novick's company, Comedy-Works, provides all-star headline co-medians from HBO, ComedyCentral, Showtime, Last ComicStanding, and the Tonight Show.Novick’s been producing comedyshows since 1977, and has experi-ence producing shows with such co-medians as Jerry Seinfeld, RosieO’Donnell, Larry The Cable Guy,and Tim Allen.

"Mostly companies produce showsin their own facilities, which mayhold 300–400 people," says Novick."We'll put together a show for themthat will bring in comedians frommajor comedy clubs, with a headlinerfrom HBO, Comedy Central, or theTonight Show. The feature performerwill be someone who's headlined thecomedy circuit: Catch a Rising Star,the Improv, the Comedy Store. Thehost of the show will be a comedianwho's very high-energy, like a game-show host, to get the audiencewarmed up. A triple headliner show!”

The Somerset Fire Company ofNew Jersey produces two fundraisersa year through ComedyWorks."We've done about ten shows so far,and it's been great," says Mike Rein-

beck, who coordinates the shows forthe 65-member volunteer department."A friend of mine who had used Joeytold me, 'This guy books really goodacts.' So, we did the first show, every-thing was great, and we've been doingshows with Joey ever since."

Lockport responds to treeand power lines down

The wind whipped at times upto 45 mph and one of these gustsbrought down a hugh tree limb onPine Street just South of Willow.

Lockport Fire got on scene tofind two huge limbs across PineStreet. They ripped down a numberof power poles and a large trans-former. Wires were ripped fromhouses and poles up and down theroad waved under the pressure. Afew cracked.

Half way down the street, an-other transformer started arching,causing Lockport Fire to close the

roadway down from High Street toWillow Street.

Lockport Fire worked withNYSEG to secure the scene so theycould get power restored.

The road was shut down mostof the day and Lockport Fire stayedon scene for a number of hoursuntil the scene was safe.

Dutchess County weekendat fire academy

Fishkill, NY. Firefighters rep-resenting 21 fire departments fromDutchess County pose in front ofthe NYS Fire Academy in MontourFalls at the recent 21th DutchessCounty Training Weekend.

The weekend offered severalcourses to help advance the skills offirefighters and officers. DutchessCounty Weekend at the Fire Acad-emy is one of the most attended andlongest held events.

Attendees gathered on Fridaynight for dinner and an orientationsession was given by the weekendorganizer Kyle Pottenburgh.

After the Saturday classroomsessions were completed, a catereddinner was held at the nearby Mon-tour Falls firehouse, where fire-fighters made new acquaintancesand renewed old ones.

Sunday saw attendees back inthe class or participating in thehands-on training portion of theirseminars.

Middlehope, NY - On the afternoon of March 29th, MiddlehopeFire Department was toned out for a brush fire. Hundreds offeet of hose were pulled to extinguish the blaze. Assisting atthe scene was Milton Fire Department.

Town of Newburgh, NY - Three cars were damaged in an ac-cident on Carter Avenue on March 25, 2013. Middlehope FireDepartment arrived to find one SUV uprighted after arollover. A second SUV was involved in the crash as well asminor damage to a contractor's van parked in a driveway.The drivers did not seem to sustain any serious injuries, butthe Town of Newburgh Emergency Medical Services werecertainly prepared. All hazards were cleaned up and units re-turned soon thereafter.

Three cars damaged in accident

Fully involved structure fire in BuffaloOn April 5, 2013 at approxi-

mately 9:30 p.m., Buffalo FireAlarm received several calls report-ing a structure fire in the vicinity ofGittere Street and Walden Avenueon the city's east side.

First in Engine 31 arrived at127 Gittere and reported a fully in-volved two and one half story woodframe with an exposure problem at129 Gittere.

They immediately stretched off

two-two and a half inch hose linesand began to protect the exposure.Ladder 14 requested an extra twoengines and one ladder truck to thescene.

Several more hose lines wereadvanced into the exposure build-ing and firefighters were able to

limit the damage to the exposurebuilding. Firefighters used onetower ladder, two-two and a halfinch and three-one and three quarterinch hand lines. Crews completedoperations in just under two hours.

Damage was listed as $35,000to 127 Gittere and $5,000 to 129Gittere. The cause is under investi-gation.

Tupper Lake battles fast moverAt 11:26 p.m. on March 14th,

Tupper Lake Fire and EMS werepaged out to a working structurefire on Cedar Street in the village.

Arriving crews found a garagefully involved with extension to anoccupied home. A second alarmwas requested for anther engineand more manpower. PiercefieldVFD responded mutual aid withtheir cascade and manpower.

Crews entered the home to at-tempt at an interior attack. Littleheadway was made due to the firemoving fast overhead on the sec-ond floor.

The 100 year old structure hadmultiple roofs on it, which allowedthe fire to travel freely overhead, so

crews were pulled from the struc-ture and fought the fire from the ex-terior. Weather at the time was 3degrees and it was decided to callfor more mutual aid.

Long Lake VFD was requestedto respond to cover the TupperLake station. They were moved upto the scene and Saranac Lake wasrequested to respond with an en-gine and manpower to cover thestation.

Tower 164 was special calledto respond to it's first worker. Aftermoving some vehicles, 164 was set

up and used to attack the fire fromabove and start pulling the struc-ture apart to get at hot spots.

As the night wore on, crewswere able to enter the structure andextinguish the remaining pocketsof fire. Mutual aid companies werereleased and the scene by 5:30 a.m.

While standing by, SaranacLake was paged to respond to apossible second structure fire inTupper Lake, but luckily turned outto be a dog house that had been ig-nited by carelessly discarded hotashes.

All Tupper Lake equipmentwas back in service by 7:30.

Six displaced after blazeBuffalo firefighters of the 7th

Battalion 3rd Platoon were calledout to battle a struc-ture fire at 807 E.Delavan Ave. on thecity's east side onApril 12th.

This fire wasdispatched right afterthe fire on HermanSt. An additional lad-der company wassent to fill in for Res-cue 1 and a chief tofill in for the division chief operat-ing at the Herman St. blaze.

Five adults and a child were dis-placed and the Red Cross was calledin to assist the occupants of the twoand a half story frame dwelling.

No injuries were reported andthe cause of the fire is under investi-gation. The damage was undeter-mined.

Fire traps two occupantsA rapidly spreading fire trapped

two occupants in their home at 190Mill Road in the Town of Rhinebeckearly Sunday morning, April 7th.

The Rhinebeck Fire Departmentwas dispatched for a reported struc-ture fire at 190 Mill Road at 2:36a.m. Additional dispatch reportedthe caller was attempting to removehis mother from the house and therapidly spreading fire was prevent-ing him from doing so. First onscene NY StateTroopers RussellWright and ChadGreer were able tosafely remove theelderly woman andthe son followedthem out.

Upon his arrival,Rhinebeck ChiefRick Dorrer re-quested a second alarm and addi-tional tankers to the scene to assistin a water relay. He was then in-formed by state police that all occu-pants were now safely out of thehome.

Fire operations began with aninterior attack, but as the fire on thesecond floor grew in intensity, allfirefighters were removed to the ex-terior of the home and used fourhose streams to darken the mainbody of fire.

They continued with interior firecontrol and extinguishment. Be-cause of the set back from the road,more than 2,000 feet of five inchhose was used to supply water to thescene of the fire from the respond-ing mutual aid departments. Therewere 70 firefighters on the scene as-sisting with fire control, extinguish-ment and EMS operations. The firewas deemed under control at 4:15a.m. and the last Rhinebeck appara-tus left the scene at 10:45 a.m.

The occupants and homeownerswere Gary McLaughlin, 60, and hismother Audrey McLaughlin age 92.Mrs. McLaughlin was transportedby NDP to Northern Dutchess Hos-pital for evaluation.

The house sustained major firedamage and the Dutchess CountyFire Investigation team was onscene and determined the fire to beaccidental in origin and most likelycaused by a faulty chimney. Therewere smoke detectors in the home,but they failed to operate due to ap-parent battery failure.

Assisting the Rhinebeck FireDepartment at the scene were theHillside, Roosevelt, Rhinecliff, West

Clinton, Ulster Hose #5, Milan andRed Hook Fire Departments.

Also on the scene were North-ern Dutchess paramedics, NY StatePolice, Dutchess County Sheriffs,and the Dutchess County Fire In-vestigation Team.

Town of Newburgh, NY. On April 10th at approximately 9:30 p.m., the Winona Lake EngineCompany was toned out for a rollover at 185 Gardnertown Road. They arrived to find thedriver out of the vehicle and uninjured. It is possible that the slick roads from heavy rainscontributed to the accident.

Firefighter injured at fire in BuffaloBuffalo firefighters of the 6th

Battalion 1st Platoon were calledout to battle a structure fire at 141Benzinger St. in Buffalo's LovejoySection on April 9th.

The one and a half story framewas well involved on arrival. Theflames cracked some windows onthe neighboring school and dam-aged 139 Benzinger St.

The alarm was soundedaround 4:15 a.m. Firefighters used

multiple two and a half inch andone and three quarter inch handlines.

The Red Cross was called fortwo adults and five children.

Damage was extensive with141 Benzinger at $75,000 to thebuilding and $25,000 to the con-

tents. 139 Benzinger had $10,000to the building and $5,000 to thecontents. The school at 1133 E.Lovejoy had $2000 in damage tothe windows.

One firefighter was trans-ported to the hospital and thecause of the fire is under investi-gation.
