Dear readers, If marking two milestones in just one quarter is any indication of what lies ahead for Lufthansa Technik Philippines for the rest of 2012, it will surely be one

exciting flight. We opened the year with the inauguration

of our A380 hangar. Top Philippine government officials headed by President Benigno Simeon Aquino III witnessed the dazzling extravaganza in early February. Inspired by the inroads that Lufthansa Technik Philippines has carved to place the Philippines on the global aviation map, the President, in his speech expressed his

optimism for the future of Philippine aviation (page 6).

Closely following the launch of the hangar is the start of the disassembly of the 100th engine in our engine teardown shop (page 1). This significant event highlights the importance of engine teardown as a source of material to supply Engine Overhaul Services with spare parts.

We are now also working on maintenance works which are fruits of our strong relationships with our customers. Vladivostok have entrusted their A330s to us for C-checks. Currently, we are working on the fourth C-check for the operator’s A330 fleet (page 8). Prior to this, we have provided C-checks to nine of their A320s. Meanwhile, we have completed two C1-checks on AirAsia X’s A330s (page 9).

Our solid relationship with Qantas Airways

and Jetstar Airways has expanded our services to another operator within the Jetstar network. At the end of 2011, we have completed a C2-check and refreshed the cabin of Vietnam’s Jetstar Pacific (page 9). Also, at the beginning of the year, we have provided reliable support to Jetstar Pacific in an AOG in Vietnam (page 4).

We hope that your year has started fruitfully as you have hoped. We are committed in helping you achieve a productive 2012.

Sincerely yours,

Dominik [email protected]

LTP disassembles 100th jet engine

AN IMPORTANT milestone was reached recently by Lufthansa Technik Philippines when work began on the teardown of the 100th engine in the jet engine shop in Manila.

With reducing maintenance cost and increasing quality and performance as key areas of focus, engine teardown is becoming more and more important as a source of surplus parts to global airlines and MROs. Forseeing this need, Lufthansa Technik set up the dedicated shop at Lufthansa Technik Philippines to meet the global demand. The teardown of the 100th engine, a General Electric, CF6-80C2, was initiated in the presence of executives of the engine supplier and customer, GA Telesis (GAT). GAT is yet the biggest customer yet of the teardown shop in Manila, with sales in 2011 surpassing the level of the previous year by a large margin.

In his speech to mark the momentous occasion, Abdol Moabery, president & CEO of GAT, said, “GA Telesis has been at Lufthansa Technik’s side as it built up its engine teardown line. We have obtained here the answer to our needs in terms of quality and integrated customer orientation.

We are therefore prepared to follow the strongly growing surplus needs of the Lufthansa Technik Group with the EPAR Surplus Chain Management product envisaged for this purpose.” EPAR Surplus Chain Management is Lufthansa Technik’s combination of engine teardown, MRO and warehouse services.

Jan Pfeil, vice president Engine and Component Overhaul at Lufthansa Technik Philippines, explained in his speech, “Lufthansa Technik Philippines is proud to satisfy the requirements of GA Telesis as one of the market-leading companies. We intend to further develop our strengths, amongst other measures by setting up customer distribution warehouses with web-based access that give us a unique selling point today.”

Initially designed to handle 50 engines per year maximum, Lufthansa Technik’s engine teardown shop expects to double that figure within the next years, thus further increasing the importance of engine teardown as a source of material to supply Engine Overhaul Services with spare parts.

Roaring support for the lionProvidesTRAXtrainingtoLionAir

Lufthansa Technik Philippines sent four IT personnel to Lion Air to facilitate a training program on TRAX for the operator’s key users.

Technical support for Jetstar PacificA Lufthansa Technik Philippines technical support team comprising three structural mechanics and their team leader flew to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam to provide Aircraft on Ground (AOG) support to a Jetstar Pacific B737-400 aircraft.

After successfully diagnosing the problem raised by the customer, the team began the repair task, often using specialized tools they brought with them from Manila. The task required them to replace an aluminum fairing panel. This entailed working in and out of the fuel tank, removing fasteners from the top of the wing skin that passes through the tank, and ensuring that the secured panel will generate no leakage.

It took the team less than a week to restore the aircraft, much to the satisfaction of the customer. The team showed dedication as they

worked throughout Tết Nguyên Đán or Vietnamese Lunar New Year, widely known as the most important holiday and festival in Vietnam. The commitment shown by the team in providing fast response and reliable support combined with their full range of

expertise, was highly regarded by the customer.

Jetstar Pacific recently joined LTP’s roster of customers, with LTP providing base maintenance customers to its Airbus A320 aircraft. Based in Ho Chi Minh City, Jetstar Pacific is Vietnam’s first value based carrier. Vietnam Airlines holds the majority ownership at 70% while 30% is held by the Qantas Group. Jetstar Pacific operates a domestic fleet of five Boeing 737s and two Airbus A320s that fly across seven destinations in Vietnam.

The TRAX training for Lion Air has two phases in March 2012 and is part of LTP’s personnel deployment program.

LTP understands the growing demands and trends in the aviation industry and prides itself with highly-skilled and well-trained personnel behind modern-day IT infrastructure it has invested in. Being well-versed on the functionalities of TRAX has previously brought some of LTP’s IT personnel to Jetstar Airways in Australia and Jetstar Airways in Singapore to conduct a training on the TRAX software.

Lion Air took to the skies from Indonesia in year 2000 with one aircraft in its fleet. Within eight years of operation, Lion Air now claims to have the biggest market share in Indonesia as it flies to more than 36 cities in Indonesia and many other destinations such as Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam on a fleet of brand new Boeing 737-900ER. It now boasts of 90 aircraft in its fleet.

Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP), one of the largest providers of aircraft maintenance services in Asia, has opened a third hangar in Manila for work on widebody aircraft. With this step, the company is preparing for the technical support of the world’s largest commercial aircraft. Lufthansa Technik Philippines, an Airbus specialist, will start cabin modifications for the Airbus A380 in April 2012.

The company, a joint venture between Lufthansa Technik (51%) and the Philippine’s MacroAsia Corporation (49%), invested USD 30 million in the construction of the new hangar, which is 8,500 square meters large and 35 meters in height. The new hangar offers space to work simultaneously on one widebody and two narrowbody aircraft.

• Third widebody hangar in Manila • Up to 400 new jobs

Forward to the future of aviation

“With the new hangar, we’ll be able to keep up with the increasing demand for technical services for long-haul Airbus aircraft, particularly in the Asian market,” said Lufthansa Technik AG’s Chairman of the Executive Board, August Wilhelm Henningsen. “By adding A380 capability, it underscores Lufthansa Technik Philippines’ role as global competence center for Airbus overhauls.”

Operating the new hangar will also mean adding 400 high-technology and high-skills jobs to the existing 2,700 jobs in LTP.

“The opening of the new hangar serves to reaffirm the Filipino aviation workers’ place among the world’s best and underscores LTP’s long-term plans of operating in the Philippines,” said Washington SyCip, Chairman of Lufthansa Technik Philippines.

In preparation for the capability expansion, Lufthansa Technik Philippines employees have completed trainings

which consisted of A380-specific course in Lufthansa Technical Training Philippines, the on-site training center in Manila, and several months of on-the-job training performing A380 C-checks at Lufthansa Technik in Frankfurt. In these exposures, Filipino engineers and mechanics yet again benefited from the exchange of knowledge and skills within the Lufthansa Technik Group.

Eleven years after its founding, Lufthansa Technik Philippines, located at Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport, offers comprehensive technical services including lease return checks and cabin modification for the Airbus A330/A340 and A320 families and now also for the Airbus A380. It has 30 base maintenance customers including Philippine Airlines, Lufthansa, Qantas, Virgin Atlantic, LAN Chile and AirAsia X. Lufthansa Technik Philippines has about 20 approvals from aviation authorities including the American FAA and the European EASA.
