ACWS Advanced Car Wash Systems - Q’waterly Newsletter - Volume 5, Issue 1, January 2009 Every New Year, I try to start with focusing on something positive, however, some events from last year just cannot go unnoticed. This past year has to be labeled the “Year of Extremes,” to say the least. The 2008-year started with gas prices going as high as $4.12 in July and ended with gas prices as low as $1.49. The 2008-year started with the “hint” of a reces- sion, and ended with a full-blown admittance of a recession, which is projected to last well into 2010. The 2008-year stock market was like riding a roller coaster ride with plunging record losses in one day and then bouncing back the next day. So what happens now? What’s in store for 2009? It seems almost absurd to try and predict. As we have seen, it could be almost anything. The only thing consistent is there is no consistency. One idea all car wash operators can stick with is “the basics,” what you originally did when you irst opened up. These simple ideas are time-proven and still work and what’s more, you probably already have what it takes to start them up again. Two key ingredients are still needed; hard work and fantastic customer service. Every New Year, I try to start with focusing on something positive, however, some events from last year just cannot go unnoticed. This past year has to be labeled the “Year of Extremes,” to say the least. The 2008-year started with gas prices going as high as $4.12 in July and ended with gas prices as low as $1.49. According to a recent article in USA Today, the drought has eased in the South due to a wet December. It “...has helped much of the South recover from a drought for the past 2 years. The latest US Drought Moni-tor shows...none of the region is in the worst category of drought, although a pocket of severe-to-extreme drought still persists in Northeast Georgia including Lake Lanier - a lake vital to the Atlanta area water supply.” Even though it looks as if we will soon fully recover from this drought, it’s good to remember that it can happen again. Take steps now for the future. Visit GaSavesWater.com and see what you can do!

Drought Update

That is a question a lot of people ask. People either forget or don’t understand the importance of soft water in our industry. However, if you are concerned about your wash equipment and the quality of the wash you are providing, then you should be concerned about the effects that hard water has on your equipment and wash quality.First of all what is hard water and how is it formed? If you look at water it’s very good at holding things, either by suspending them or dissolving them. So as water travels through the ground it absorbs parts of whatever it passes through. Therefore, water contains minerals that are found in the ground because of absorption. In the case of hard water, calcium and magne-sium are of importance, because they make our water hard. What are the effects of hard water? Hard water will cause calcium and magnesium deposits to build up in your equipment, greatly reducing low and in some cases completely stopping the low in nozzles, injectors, and spray tips. Hard water will also reduce the life and eficiency of your water heater or boiler by creating a scale build up. Scale buildup can reduce the useful life of a water heater by as much as 50% and greatly increase operating expenses. A small buildup of only 1/16 of an inch on the heating transfer surfaces of a water heater signiicantly increases energy consumption. These are just a few of the effects of hard water on your equipment. These effect on your equipment alone can cause problems with the quality of your wash but hard water does more then just affect your equipment. Detergents when mixed with hard water lose some effectiveness. Hard water mixed with alkaline detergents is counter-productive. The alkaline detergent sees the minerals in the water as soils and starts to attack them. Therefore the alkaline detergent is weakened before it reaches the cars’ surface. Hard water also affects the foaming ability of detergents and conditioners. So, what do you do if you have hard water? The solution in most cases and also the most common is a water softener. Water softeners are designed to remove the calcium and magnesium from your water in a process called ion exchange. So the answer to the question is; yes hard water really matters. So if you are in an area with hard water check yours regularly.
