Building Communities Through Investment and Care | 1
Dear Friends and Customers,
It is a pleasure to once again review and share our 2011 Corporate Social Responsibility Programme with you.
This has been another year where over fifty (50) causes, organizations and individuals have felt the 1st National Bank’s touch of altruism. This is part of who are. As the country’s 1st indigenous Bank founded to serve our communities, we are satisfied that everyday since our inception, we have lived up to this value and expectation. Indeed over the past few years we have increased our community re-investment to cover a plethora of sponsorships including: Arts and Culture, Sports, Youth Development, The Environment, Financial Literacy and Information, Education, Health Care, The Elderly and The Physically impaired among many others.
At 1st National bank we understand fully that communities cannot grow without the support of the business community. Our acts of kindness and goodwill, although driven by a culture of patriotism and care is also part of a reciprocal and symbiotic process as we also understand that the business community cannot exist without the patronage and confidence of the various sectors and communities that form our country.
So, we continue year after year to plough hundreds of thousands in the soil of national development, with the optimism and hope, that our contribution continues to have an impact on every segment of our community.
As winners of the National Business Awards for Corporate Social Responsibility for two years in a row, we are also humbled by the recognition of our peers and the Saint Lucia Chamber of Commerce.
2012 is now upon us and our devotion remains strong and steadfast. The presence of new branches in the
1st National Bank tree, is an indication of our deep commitment to affect lives positively wherever we are.
Reflecting on a fulfilling Year

Saint Lucian Sports
The Bank continues to show Spectacular form in Support of Saint Lucian Sports.
This year 1st National Bank has once again reinforced its commitment to Saint Lucian youth and sport. No other endeavor enforces the symbiosis of body and mind better. No other endeavor displays the fruits of constant refining, and determination more profoundly.
Across our island all athletes experience the overwhelming hunger for victory, many, the fulfillment that comes from achieving it and others, the unbearable realization that they have fallen “just” short. It is this cycle fueled by the pursuit of victory, which refines a country, its people and its athletes. 1st National Bank acknowledges its responsibility to champion this cycle and all who have nurtured the courage to form part of it.

St. Lucia’s world class high jumper Levern Spencer has much to celebrate after qualifying for the summer Olympic games to beheld in London next year. Levern cleared the qualifying mark of 1.92 meters, placing second in the rankings. This accomplishment continues to prove Levern’s worth as a national athlete and for this reason a special management committee has been formed to assist the high jumper. Manager Gregory Dickson says Levern has been steadfast in her quest to bring glory to St. Lucia.
“The goal was always to ensure that it would not be just a time for her to receive an education or to just go out there and participate in sports but to be out there on the international scene and to be one of those individuals that we would be viewing on television as we do with the Jamaicans and the Trinidadians, cheering for her.”- GregoryDickson.
The management committee has launched a vigorous campaign dubbed “Levern London 2012”. The aim is to rally financial support for the St. Lucian high jumper as well as technical and personal grooming to enhance Levern as a marketable sports celebrity.
Committee member Rowston Taylor says Levern has worked hard enough under trying circumstances to deserve it. “To the corporate entities and persons who have decided to do what is right, I thank you! Thank you on behalf of Levern, thank you on behalf of the next athlete who I hope will not have to endure what Levern has.”
Several corporate entities have given tangible support to the Levern London Campaign including 1ST National Bank. “This is a new road, this is a new beginning and we accept along with our other sponsors and colleagues this new challenge because we take great pride in what Levern has become, we are overjoyed at what we see her doing and we are going to be with Levern all the way to London 2012.”
Levern for her part has welcomed the support. “As a representative of my country for the past 13 unbroken years I must confess that it has not been all smooth sailing. There have been many potential pitfalls along the way. There were times when I felt like giving up. But I having surrounded my self with the right people and I having used my formula, I have kept on going today. I am glad I did continue!”
The High jumper who is ranked 7th in the world has also been given her own internet domain.
Levern looks to London 2012 with1st National Bank’s Support.

Occasions like this are made
possible through the continuous
support of our sponsors, in
this case the 1st National
Bank limited. The relationship
between 1st National Bank and the St.lucia Athletics
Association over the last 18 years has been praised
as a foundation for St.lucian youth, empowering
them even in today’s challenging times. Athletics
has traditionally been an avenue for youth to develop
goal-oriented attitudes, discipline, in essence,
maturity! Social trends writhe with scarce resources,
declining sponsorship and the rapid waning of
youth’s interest in sports. The internet, video games,
crime and drugs have never been more popular. It is
quite an accomplishment to have kept this tradition
of support alive. 1st National Bank understands the
importance and value of sport in nation building
and the need for commitment and purposefulness,
keeping both eyes on the vision. President of 1st
National Bank Dr. Sharmaine Gardner likened the
Banks achievements to that of the athletes. 1st
National Bank is running a marathon of a race in
support of St.lucian Athletics. “We should
all take persistent pleasure in our earnest
efforts,” she stated.
“In our highly competitive field we at 1st
National Bank often run the same stiff
breeze of economic challenge. Therefore
we share with you athletes the pride that
comes from knowing that achieving excellence is its
own award. We congratulate all who participate in
the spirit of demanding the best of ourselves“

EducationThe universal means.
Quoting the most outstanding educator of Saint Lucian History, Sir William Arthur Lewis “The fundamental cure for poverty is not money but knowledge”. 1st National Bank proudly champions this conclusion through its unwavering support of Saint Lucian education. 1st National Bank believes that education should under no circumstances be an end. Education should however, under all circumstances be a means, a means to liberation, a means to make better, a means to remedy, a means to grow.
Throughout 2011 the bank supported educational initiatives and institutions, contributing to the noblest process of empowering students. The Bank also aimed to reinforce in students the need to use this new found empowerment to liberate, to make better, to remedy and to grow, not just themselves but our country, Saint Lucia. C

1st National Bank Gives further Support to C.A.R.E
Corinth Secondary School displays its Musical Talent with 1st National Bank’s Support
Adolescent Renewal and Education in it’s list of institutions to be visited as part of Financial information month. The teenagers were encouraged to start a savings account so that they will later on be able to afford life’s necessities. This month October is designated Financial information month by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank and so we felt it important, and we felt it absolutely necessary to impart some knowledge to the students on savings and investments. We are here to help them develop a saving mind-set, through practical suggestions on becoming better savers and wiser investors.
The school received another instalment of a 3 year covenant with 1st National Bank valued at $10,000. It is an initiative that the Bank views as a highly tangible investment in C.A.R.E’s future. “We
at 1st National Bank limited believe in opportunity and we see the development of the C.A.R.E centre as creating opportunity for our young people, so they may gain advancement in life skills and general education,” explained Mr. Fevrier. Executive Director of C.A.R.E. Dr. Marilyn Morris expressed hope for the
continued relationship which exists between the school and 1st National Bank.
“C.A.R.E. and 1st National Bank are committed to the young men and women who come through C.A.R.E’s doors. To ensure that they leave ready and equipped to be productive citizens in this beautiful country of ours,” exclaimed Dr. Marilyn Morris.
Proof of the students of the Corinth Secondary School’s musical ability was evident in the musical program showcased their talent for the guests. Corinth’s reputation as a leader in the secondary schools musiccurriculum certainly precedes them. Corinth Secondary
School has been doing music from since 1983.It has been a timetable subject. It has placed music on the timetable of all secondary school in St.Lucia after they saw how successful it is here. Through our sponsors like 1st National Bank we have been able

to carry on. 1st National Bank responded to the school’s special request for a dedicated computer, which would enable the students to move into the digital age of musical reproduction. Previously they had to borrow equipment or pay for the services of a professional studio to record their work. This presentation today will cut the cost of us having to pay hundreds of dollars to a studio to get our recordings done for publication. 1st National Bank has a well-documented reputation of supporting the arts and youth programs in St.Lucia. Manager of events Product services Mr. Robert Fevrier says the Banks investment in the Corinth secondary school is an extension of the Bank’s corporate social responsibility. Listening to your performance I have no doubt that 1st National Bank made the right choice in investing in this piece of equipment. It will of course enhance the talent that I saw and most definitely heard here this morning. We know how critical music is in our everyday lives. it has been said that
music is the food of life. As you well know many people live their lives economically sustained by music and the creative arts. 1st National Bank has been dubbed the Patron of the Arts of St. Lucia. The iMac computer was presented to the Corinth Secondary School students in their music room Thursday.

the Entrepot
Secondary School.
1st National Bank paid a special visit to the principal and staff of the Entrepot s e c o n d a r y school following a formal request by the teachers for assistance in a remodeling project. The teachers of the Entrepot Secondary school were determined to do something about the state of their staff room. The area was not the most conducive place to work or to meet the students or their parents.
For sometime the teachers have been complaining that the staff room is a bit congested and our teachers primarily from the business department, they came to me before going to the principal. They were looking at ways of putting up additional cupboards for storage of papers, books and so on. They put together a proposal. Business teacher Maximilia Eudovic the initiator of the proposal decided to make an appeal for assistance from St.Lucia’s cooperate community. There was some response but in general not very encouraging as few of the school’s immediate needs were being met. We had already sent out letters to various corporations. We got money that covered labor costs to enhance the staff room whereby we
could install some new cupboards and get some new fans for the staff room. We got the furniture, or you can say most of it from another corporation, but we were lacking finance to cover labor costs and fans. That was when 1st National Bank stepped in to help with the rest of the teacher’s needs. The Bank believes that their contribution is an investment in education in St.Lucia.
As we know the staff room is a place of heavy teacher interaction. A lot of work happens in the staff room in terms of preparing schedules, homework, preparing and marking student examinations and so this room should be a room that is conducive to all this activity helping the teachers perform at their optimum. Many times we contribute towards student development, which is also very good, but often times we can tend to neglect the people in the background, the teachers and staff and those who administer the educative program. Robert Fevrier, manager of projects and services of 1st National Bank paid a special visit to the Entrepot school to get a first hand look at the newly refurbished teacher’s staff room.

The bank has led the way in Corporate Social Responsibility amongst its peers, reflected in its unwavering support for the Arts in St. Lucia. The financial institution promptly began its duties in the local community, marking Nobel Laureate Week this year, under the theme, “Celebrating Excellence, Sustaining the Legacy”.
1st National Bank has over the years, supported the work of the UWI Open Campus who play an active role in participating in Nobel Laureate celebrations. This year, their annual lecture and workshop focused attention on teachers of English Literature. The workshop was centered on the topic “Discovering St. Lucian Literature” and was open to all English Literature teachers and practitioners.
Financed by 1st National Bank through a five thousand dollar donation, the workshop, is viewed as a complimentary activity to the bank’s corporate social responsibility thrust. This is not the first time 1st National Bank has supported activities marking Nobel Laureate Week and the workshop at the UWI Open Campus has been able to expand its focus through the bank’s generous assistance. 1st National Bank supports the Silver Shadow dancers
This year Silver Shadow Dance Academy – a young, vibrant local dance company put on a successful performance of a production entitled Drum Song. The performance would not have been possible without the financial assistance of a local indigenous bank. Drum Song, according to Director of the Silver Shadow Dance Academy, Barry George, is a tribute to St. Lucia’s cultural icons that have since passed on.
Barry George, “The production “drum song” really represents a journey of St. Lucia in a nut shell. It also represents a tribute to the icons that passed away last year. I mean St. Lucia lost at least 10 icons last year. And the drum song actually pays tribute to those who played a meaningful role in the development of culture in St. Lucia.
The pieces actually reflect St. Lucia’s authentic history. It also shows a little bit of St. Lucia’s rich culture. And the whole production was more or less contemporary which was fused with a number of dance forms like Afro-Caribbean, African movement and of course
Caribbean dance. So in a nut shell it’s really a combination of that with live drumming ad wonderful music that compliments the whole production.”
1st National Bank, well known locally for their philanthropic support of the Arts in St. Lucia and the recent winner of the Business Award for its high level of Corporate Social Responsibility, did not hesitate to help when the call came. Robert Fevrier the projects and services manager of 1st National Bank had this to say, “It is said that we are the Patron of the Arts in St. Lucia. We endeavor to support young, creative talent, whether it is in the field of education, sports or the development of culture. So we are very pleased and very heartened to see all of the creativity and all of the work that is being done by the director Barry George, with this, I would say the cream of the crop of the performing arts in St.Lucia.”
This is not the first time 1st National Bank has supported the work of the Silver Shadow Dance Academy. They did so last year in making a contribution towards a production staged by the company entitled “Breakout”.
As a patron of the Arts, 1st National Bank also delved into the business of film-making. The bank assisted a regional film-maker with a moving tribute to Caribbean men. Onel Sandford-Belle is the personality behind Everyday Heroes – A Fresh Look at Caribbean Men.

1st National Bank Supports kaiso Headquarters
Considered one of the “safest” fetes in town, Kaiso Headquarters hosted by members of the Royal Police Force launched with the full support of top brass and of course 1st National Bank.
Now in its sixth consecutive year, the competition has become a fixture on the carnival calendar of events. Acting Police Commissioner,
Vernon Francois and other high-ranking officers of the Royal St. Lucia Police Force gathered with other allied service providers and sponsors to witness the launch of Kaiso Headquarters 2011. Over its six years, the event has grown from strength to strength.
“The Royal St.lucia Police Force proposes to move one step further this year. As part of our police week of activities we are targeting a regional calypso competition. Therefore we are hoping that the winner of the Kaiso Headquarters Calypso Event will have the privilege of representing us regionally during the month of October,” stated Mr. Francois.
This year a workshop was held for the participants to help sharpen their calypso skills. During the press launch of Kaiso Headquarters, several sponsors presented the organizers with their financial and material support for the event.
1st National Bank has been a consistent sponsor and supporter, financing the event from as far back as its inception, as their commitment to the arts and culture in St. Lucia is well documented. “Its an event that 1st National Bank is very proud of, in that we see the efforts made by the Royal St.Lucia Police Force not only in tackling crime but also in
improving their relationship with members of the community,” Mr. Robert Fevrier remarked.
Acting Commissioner Vernon Francois encouraged members of the force to continue participating in the event as, according to him, it has had a positive effect on the work of the police. “This event provides us with an excellent opportunity to be more well rounded in the task of policing. Every year we have more and more officers getting involved in Kaiso Headquarters. Just as 1st National Bank has shown its unwavering support for this event I adamantly pledge the support of the entire police department for this event.,” exclaimed Mr.Francois.

1st National Bank Sponsor Kiddies Carnival 2k11Three junior carnival bands proudly supported by 1st National Bank took the top three places at this year’s Kiddies Carnival.
1st National bank is once again adding to its record of achievement by way of development of local Arts and Culture, specifically Kiddies Carnival 2011.
This year, 1st National Bank decided to lend a helping hand to three junior bands in the St.Lucia Carnival 2011 celebrations – Just Us
Kids, Rituals and Dynamic Kids. Bank representative, Mr. Robert Fevrier believes now is the time to develop the children’s creativity. “We’re throwing our weight behind the children because we believe that culture is important. As with any and everything else you have to start at a young age. 1ST National Bank has made it its duty to develop that spirit of and appreciation for culture in these kids.”
Hundreds of school children turned out on the afternoon of the event, in perfect weather to showcase their costumes. Following months of hard work at mas camps around Castries. Five bands participated in the competition. Barry George, leader of Just Us Kids junior carnival band, took top honors at this year’s carnival portrayal, held at the Vigie Sports Complex. His band depicted the theme, The People Who Came.
Our themes are usually children friendly themes. We felt we should try doing something historical this year. Through use of this theme the children were able to build a connection with who they were and how they have come to be “Caribbean People”. Therefore the theme “The People Who Came” was amazingly appropriate. Interestingly,
“The People who Came” is an old history text book which many are familiar with. George says he is ensuring the sustainability of the carnival art form. He also believes that the mas camp is a crucial training ground for future costume designers and builders. The Just Us Kids mas camp also provides valuable assistance to students doing their SBAs. We are proud to say that everywhere Just Us Kids is training at least 30 young persons in costume building. I know down the line these individuals will own or manage a band or possibly be a designer for a band. We are proud to know that we are part of the carnival “process” and that we have been instrumental in giving these young ones this critical opportunity. We also express our gratefulness to 1st National Bank for their financial support. There are many theatre arts
students who come here to participate as well, because it aids them in their study of the CXC subject Theatre Arts and in costume building, which is an aspect of their study.
The other two bands funded by 1st National bank, Dynamic Kids and Rituals junior carnival band came in second and third respectively.

Social developmentNourishing the foundation of Saint Lucia,
Our People.
Some argue that society defines the people, others argue that the people define society. Irrespective of this 1st National Bank views both as needing and deserving care. The Bank has demonstrated this belief throughout 2011, through its concrete support of social initiatives and institutions.
Being Saint Lucia’s 1st Native Bank, 1st National Bank has gained an intimate knowledge of Saint Lucians. Consequently, the Bank has also gained an unadulterated and inimitable care for Them. It has both the experience and ability to positively influence all facets of Saint Lucian society, 2011 gives testament to that.

1st National Bank has committed to a three year
covenant with the St.lucia Sickle Cell Association.
This year Bank representative Robert Fevrier paid
a visit to the institution to check on its progress
and to deliver another installment of its monetary
support to president Paula Calderon.
“I am pleased to be at the St. Lucia sickle cell
association office and clinic to honor our
commitment, the second installment of our 3
year covenant totaling $13,500. On behalf the
Board of Directors, management and staff of
1st National Bank St.Lucia limited I would like
to present this cheque of $4500 to the St.Lucia
Sickle Cell Association in support of all the good
work they have been doing in St.Lucia.” –Mr.
Robert Fevrier
In recent times the association has encountered
several set backs including a long search for
new headquarters and theft of equipment,
computers and medical supplies. Donations
like that of 1st National Bank help to sustain
the daily operations vital to the health of
people suffering from the sickle cell disease.
President of the association Paula Calderon
thanked 1st National Bank for its generosity,
“You are the only bank actually, that over the
years has supported us through a covenant
which gives us the ability to plan better and
we would hope that at some time later on that
more banks will learn from 1st National Bank’s
efforts and find it necessary to support what
we are doing.”
According to Mrs. Calderon, over the years the
association has been able to achieve much, even
with its limited resources. “We have done such a
lot of work and achieved so much that the work is
consistent, and continuous. It might not be that
somebody is getting a bone marrow transplant,
like we have done in the past, but certainly the
work continues. Our clinic is open. Our doctors,
Dr. Bird and her team, are here every week dealing
with our members and we continue to help those
with ailments, those who need assistance in
acquiring overseas medical help.
Mrs. Calderon says that’s she would like to see a
regional approach to dealing with the disease at
heads of government levels to effectively combat
the negative effects on individuals and society.

October is not only observed as Creole awareness month
, it is also the time when the
St.Lucia division of human services recognize honor th

they wanted to pay special tribute to those senior cit

celebrating their 100 year existence. Every year in Oc

of $10,000 to honor our centenarians. On October the G

minister of health formerly opened a new, expansive ho

“Today is an historic day in that the dream of providi
ng a comfortable place for our senior
citizens has finally materialized. It is our privilege
to present this gift to
you our senior citizens.” The division of human servic
es has focused
recently on increasing the number of people who want t
o become
foster parents. In St.lucia we have many children who
are living in
difficult circumstances. One remedy for this is our Fos
ter Care and
Adoption Program. We recognize the need to develop awa
reness for
this program. 1st National Bank is assisting the divis
ion with both
these initiatives as part of its corporate social resp
onsibility.
The Marian home situated in Lesleyland was established in 1952. It provides living accommodations for 60 elderly
residents. While the home provides excellent living accommodations and care for the aged it is a challenge to
maintain day to day operations.
“We appreciate your recognition of our work as we try to create a safe, healthy environment for our senior citizens. Financially it is difficult to manage an institution like this, and we depend
heavily on the monetary donations of outstanding socially conscious corporations like 1st National Bank. 1st National Bank is one of the few corporate citizens which offer regular financial support to
the Marian Home.”
The Bank has established a three year covenant with the institution to assist in the quality of services provided. A small
gesture they believe the elderly deserve.“The elderly, have contributed to society in one way or another and we believe it is only right that they be given care and attention. The three year covenant totals EC$15000. The last installment of which was handed over to administrator sister Annie Renaux. However 1st National Bank insists on maintaining its relationship with the Marian home and will remain a major
support for the institution.

The Holy Family Children’s Home was established some years ago to ensure that vulnerable children in society are given a place of permanence inside a more stable living environment. The facility is just adequate but is in constant need of assistance as more children become residents and others get older. 1st National Bank had established a covenant with the children’s home from 3 years ago to solidify its commitment to helping the youth of St. Lucia.
“It gives me the greatest pleasure on behalf of the board of directors, management and staff of 1st National Bank St.Lucia limited to present this check of $5000 to close off the first covenant with the holy family children’s home and to commit to a new covenant for 2012,”
said Mr. Fevrier.
“You are contributing significantly to changing the lives of the children at the holy family children’s home. As you know the children are getting much older and so it is even more Important that we receive support from the corporate community to meet their needs,” said Sister 1st National Banks covenant with the family children’s home amounted to $15000 over the 3 year period.
1st National Bank has once again shown it’s support for the St. Lucia Blind Welfare Association through it’s annual cheque presentation. “As we speak two of our children are in the United States receiving special medical treatment not available in St. Lucia. We could not have got them there without the support of agencies such as 1st National Bank. The work that we do is not for our own glory, it is for the glory of Him who put us here. I am so thankful for your support throughout these years. I am certain that this support will continue,” said Mr. Avril
The total value of this covenant is $9000 over a 3 year period. 1st National Bank has made a definite commitment to renew the covenant for a further 3 years. Manager of products and services Mr. Robert Fevrier says their intention to recommit to the blind welfare association is testament to the Bank’s belief in the work of the organization. “The times now are very trying economically and we value the work the blind welfare association is doing in St. Lucia. We know that they are faced with many challenges in particular financial ones. Wehope that our contributions this morning will assist in alleviating some of the operational expenses that have been brought to bare on the association.” The blind welfare association is the premier association administering to the needs of the blind and vision impaired in St. Lucia. To offset its day to day costs the organization sells eye wear and also holdsgeneral eye clinics for the public with a qualified Ophthalmologist.

Community OutreachNever withholding good when it is within
your ability to provide it.
Time and unforeseen occurrence befall us all. 1st National Bank has shown outstanding resolve in remedying infrastructural damage experienced by Saint Lucia’s schools and towns particularly during storms. The Bank has displayed the human touch and the power of care in overcoming natural disasters.
The Bank need not rely solely on its financial standing to provide support. More impressive is the physical effort, “good old fashioned hard work” put out by its staff members. Through its staff base the Bank is able to display true warmth and care, a quality virtually unseen in the corporate community. Throughout 2011, the Bank showed care in ways only Saint Lucia’s 1st Native Bank could

For so many, school is where we learn
about not only academics, but of community,
society and what it takes to be a proud
St. Lucian. For the students of Soufriere
Primary School and Fond St Jacques Primary
School, it was also where they learned last
year of the terrible power of nature as
their schools were torn apart by Hurricane
Tomas.
This year however the lesson was in the
power of the positive nature of a committed
national institution as staff of 1st National
Bank, showed why the Bank has for two
consecutive years been nationally recognized
for corporate social responsibility. Armed
both with cheque book and the people power
of the staff, 1st National Bank contributed
both in kind, with the donation of funds to
repair, replant and renew the agricultural
project and play area of Fond St Jacques
Primary School, and in person with the
staff cleaning, clearing and making safe
the entire compound of Soufriere Primary
School. With the 2011 season already
started, these schools were finally able to
close the chapter on last year, strong,
proud and ready for the future.

TCommunity Comes FirstThe Soufriere primary school is located near a large river and so the facility got the brunt of the raging waters and endless silt from the passing hurricane Thomas. Soufriere, being hardest hit by the storm, had so much to do with so little resources. Certain areas had suffered uncharacteristic neglect. 1st National Bank gave a helping hand this year along with nearly 300 persons representing local companies and charitable groups. 1st National Bank organized over 25 volunteers, some bringing along their entire family to help out their fellow St. Lucians. “We are here for the people of Soufriere who suffered the brunt of Tomas, October 2010. Therefore we saw it fitting to really show our
support, work hand in hand, share our resources especially our talent and skills in restoring the school. 1st National Bank sought to ensure the comfort of the people who work here; the staff, teachers and principal. Most importantly 1st National Bank sought to create a healthy working environment for the students!” said Mr. Fevrier. 1st National Bank’s involvement together
with nonprofit organizations like Do Something World St. Lucia had a great impact in re-furbishing the walls, tables, bathrooms and other important facilities. The fond St Jacques Primary School was used as a temporary shelter for displaced persons for over 5 weeks following the passage of hurricane Thomas. With the help of 1st National Bank the courtyard had been resurfaced for games and other recreational activities enjoyed by the students. There was much to be done to restore
the school to its original condition. During the passage of the storm the school not only lost its greenhouse but its home economics and agricultural programs. These programs depended heavily on the crops grown in the greenhouse. The principal of the school was grateful for the banks aid in repairing the most crucial sections of the school. The sponsorship of 1st National Bank facilitated the repair of the school greenhouse and the air conditioning system for the Information Technology lab. It was also used to fund the removal of neighboring trees that threatened the school building due to their compromised foundations. 1st National Bank representatives timed the clean up and restoration activity perfectly. Ensuring the fond St Jacques Primary School would not go through the 2011 hurricane season in its post Thomas condition.

1st National Bank holds Personal development Seminar.
1st National Bank is getting its younger employees to take a critical look at themselves before they come to work on a daily basis. In a personal development training session facilitated by a New York based image enhancement firm, the workers learned a few thingsabout their personal appearance.
First impressions are lasting – that is the parting message brought home to participants of 1st National Bank’s training course in personal development hosted by Stoosh Images based in New York,USA. According to Patrice DaCosta, there are other aspects to providing excellent service to which businesses do not pay attention. “I’m here to show them how to be peak performers, and nothing less. I will be highlighting appropriate dress for the work place, professionalism, proper phone etiquette, general etiquette and body language. Show them how to look “stoosh”, how to look good, how to look elegant! What I want individuals to realize is that, them being in the Caribbean does not mean that they have to act like they’re Caribbean. There is an international standard
that we are all capable of displaying.
Globalization, t e chno logy has made the world smaller, so because of that it’s no joke, our image is no joke. We can’t take it for granted like we did 20 year ago in our parents or grandparents time. Those were different times with a dilution of standards. Not anymore!”
Robert Fevrier Products and Services Manager of 1st National Bank had this to say, “this program highlights skills needed to enhance the image of an individual as a person as well as professionally. This image will inherently reflect on the bank. Our customers as well as our staff are our major priority. Developing our staff will enable 1st National Bank to deliver a level of service to St. Lucia that is second to none.”

1st National Bank hosts Staff Productivity Workshop
1st National Bank hosts Training Seminar
1st National Bank enlisted 16 supervisory personnel to attend the Local Companies’ Improvement Seminar, which was held at its Castries branch. The seminar was geared towards addressing the urgent need to improve low employment productivity in St. Lucia. In order to resolve the problem the Employers Federation took the initiative by inviting a productivity expert from Barbados to assist local companies in improving employees’ output.
The first phase of the seminar was composed of three companies who volunteered to partake in the venture. Of the three companies 1st National Bank had taken the lead as the first company to increase staff productivity. They firmly believe that in order for an economy to grow it depends highly on the efficiency of the country’s workers. Improvement in workforce productivity will enhance the quality of life of the citizens. This puts the government in a better position
to introduce initiatives, which catalyze the growth of the St. Lucian economy. By taking this proactive approach in repairing our economy from its very roots “our workforce”, 1st National Bank has started a trend!
1st National Bank is without a doubt the first of many companies to implement such re-vitalizing projects. These projects will stimulate the professional minds of every individual in St. Lucia’s vast workforce. Other companies will follow this pathway that has been laid out by 1st National Bank, as has always been the case. With more companies coming on board, results will be visible, initially with a reduction in absenteeism in the St. Lucian workforce. By no means are instant changes expected, however 1st National Bank has once again taken its corporate responsibility seriously in taking the very first step in this marathon of a journey, to a productive St. Lucian workforce.
Following its triple award win at the St. Lucia Business Awards held in late January, 1st National Bank is forging ahead with its mission of providing top notch products and services to their growing customer base. The training is aimed at employees who have first direct contact with the bank’s customers. It is based on the premise that the employee is the most powerful tool a business has at its disposal in its rise to success.
Earny St. Catherine, facilitator at the training session says employees need a clear understanding of their specific role in the company’s operations this promotes growth in the business, while providing customers with excellent service. There are loads of things that happen within an institution in terms of promoting its product via advertising, marketing, and lots of public relations. But at the end of the day, it all comes down to that point of creating an actual sale, or the bringing in of revenue. St. Catherine says because of the similarity in products and services offered by the banking sector, one of the best ways to achieve market
differentiation is to look internally at the employee base. It is the employee who is the most crucial factor. They are the ones who go out there and convert all those messages. What defines a company? How is your company distinguished? The source of distinction is within the human resource. When employees receive the training and come to understand why it is they are such a crucial part in the selling component, it is then they become the best ambassadors for the company. Robert Fevrier, 1st National Bank’s Manager of Products & Services says the training forms part of their on-going human resource development. We have decided to undertake this training with a focus on all our staff, but especially the front line staff who interact on a daily basis with our customers. The bank isn’t just a product; it is very much about our relationship with the people we serve. Through interaction with our employees our customers should gain a full sense of how important they are, without them the bank does not exist.

Financial Education and Empowerment.
Educated and Empowered to use Money in Real Ways
Money is a powerful thing. Yet in the most legalistic sense it has little to no intrinsic value, rather it represents it. While many choose to aimlessly accumulate and many more, choose to carelessly squander this representation of value, 1st National Bank has chosen to apply it in real ways.
Throughout 2011 the Bank sought to educate Saint Lucian society on just how to derive real value from their labor and more importantly the currency it earned them. The Bank has sought to not only do this through media, literature, articles and sponsorship, but also by the most difficult means, by example. Yes, the Bank’s activity throughout 2011 exemplifies the use of money in real ways. 1St National Bank will continue this effort in hopes that through Financial Education and Empowerment all Saint Lucians grow to emulate such qualities. 1st National Bank Supports NationalSavings and investment Programme
In keeping with its policy of educating the St. Lucian public on good financial management, 1st National Bank threw its support behind the country’s first ever National Savings and Investment Knowledge Building Campaign.
The bank donated $15000.00 to the programme to help with the launch and ongoing management of the initiative and the Financial fair. This phase of the programme ended in October 2011. The programme is being spearheaded by The Office for Private Sector Relations (OPSR) with seed funding from the EU. It is also supported by the ECCB. The managing of the PR and publicity is being handled by Marketing Consultants,
The Orange Media Group Inc. In addition to its financial support, 1st National Bank has dedicated airtime on 1st National Bank Notes – its Financial Literacy TV Programme - as well as space in The Teller newsletter to promote this cultural shift as it relates to our national savings and investment habits. Further
to this 1st National Bank has ramped up its community programmes in the schools and various communities. Managing Director of 1st National Bank, Mr Carlton Glasgow sees this support as consistent with the company’s policy of leading the way in financial literacy.
“ As the country’s first indigenous Bank, 1st National Bank has been integrally involved in educating our people in good money management. Over the past few years we have taken this to another level through the use of popular media and our own TV programmes and publications. Therefore when we were approached by the promoters of this initiative we were very happy to lend our support. A country that saves and invests is one that plans well for challenging times and also leaves behind a good financial heritage for future generations. future generations, noted Glasgow.

1st National Bank Dame Pearlette Louisy Savings Program
Since its launch at the start of 2011 Savings and Investments has grown tremendously. The savings program started at the Dame Pearlette Lousiy School has become so popular that Ms. Satny the teacher overseeing the initiative says they will have to expand it to the whole student population. Membership in the savings club helps the children in many ways. For one it instils in them the habit of putting aside some money for that rainy day.
We would like the children to grow up as responsible adults who will be able to maintain themselves economically through consistent saving. To mark October as Financial Information
Month 1st National Bank has taken the opportunity to visit schools around the island giving students the information on how best to manage their money. Ms.Satney approached 1st National Bank to help members of the savings club get started with their first step accounts.
“The school felt that at it’s core 1st National Bank is trying to make life better for St. Lucians and we did not hesitate to approach the Bank,” exclaimed Ms. Satney 1st National Bank will continue to help young individuals in saving and investing, keeping them on the road to financial success.

Conclusion
1st National Bank’s Community Re-investment Programme remains true to the Bank’s very raison d’etre - to build communities through: easy access to financial services and care and assistance to pillars of national development (youth, sports, culture, education, health, social care).
After seven decades we are more committed than ever before. The past few years saw a global recession that has had negative repercussions for small island economies like ours requiring that good corporate citizens increase their assistance to social causes to minimize the effects of the tough economic times. We are proud to be here for our communities both as a solid financial institution they can rely on as well as a Bank with a heart of caring that can reach out to lend a helping hand. We continue to pledge our support as a new year dawns
