DIVISIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS Well done to the 25 students who then went on to represent Pinewood Primary School in the Divisional Cross Country event conducted on Tuesday. Although a very chilly morning, our representing students demonstrated courage and grit, performing to their very best. Five our students have now made it through to the Regional Championships taking place in June. Congratulations to Gemma Year 5, Drew Year 3, Christain M. Year 5, Brendan Year 5 and Jarrah Year 6.

YEAR 5&6 CAMP-NEXT WEEK Next week our students in Years 5 and 6 attend ‘Camp Weekaway’, in Benloch, from Monday to Friday. The children will have the opportunity to participate in a number of exciting activities designed to build on the confidence, resilience and team support that has been reinforced at previous camps. Thank you to the staff and parents who are giving up their ‘home comforts’ to support the school camping program and providing students with an opportunity to participate in such a valuable experience.

MATHS – TIME It is important that children can read both analogue (clockface) and digital time. Depending upon a child’s age, it may be useful to have them involved in particular tasks and focused conversations at home to assist with the development of the difficult concept of time. Some suggested activities:

Asking children “What is today’s date?” Keeping track of family birthdays and know

which ones are coming Examining use-by dates on items and

comparing the dates with today’s date Reading timetables: for example, ask

“What time train would we need to catch to get to the football by one o’clock?”

Asking time calculations like “How long is it from now until…bedtime?” “How long until your next birthday?” “How long does the cake take to cook?”

Using a 3 minute egg timer to cook an egg.

Children develop their mathematical skills gradually and there is no urgency about developing a particular skill. On the other hand, neither can all of the skills wait until the end of their schooling. It is necessary to work progressively on helping children to learn mathematics. There are many real life activities that can be undertaken at home to assist children to gradually understand the abstract concept of time.

PARENT INFORMATION SESSION

LEARNING HOW WORDS WORK

On Wednesday June 14th, I will be holding a parent information session in the staffroom. The session will be about understanding how words work and how this helps children as they learn to read and write efficiently and independently. I will talk about the developmental stages of reading and writing and how you can help your child at home. This session will also be useful if you are a parent helper. The formal presentation will run from 9.00am – 10.00am and there will be the opportunity to ask further questions until 11.00am. Please see me beforehand if you need any further information. If you wish to attend, please return the form below to your class teacher. This will make sure we have enough seats for everyone. Kind regards, Helen Dent Leading Teacher Literacy _______________________________

OSHClub After School Care News Welcome to the first day of winter, we are busily planning for rainy days and really cold days. We have been doing drama games such Bus Stop with the children and they are really enjoying it so there will plenty more of these games to keep them busy, we are planning to have a joke afternoon where all the chil-dren get to tell their favourite jokes it will be wonder-ful to hear what they come up with, fun for everyone. Our breakfast menu now includes pancakes on Wednesdays and Thursdays with toppings and fruit. We also have specials in the afternoon such as berries and yoghurt, peaches and custard and we are always open to suggestions for healthy alternatives as long as it doesn’t involve too much cooking time. We would like to ask our families if they have any old art smocks or shirts they can donate your help would be greatly appreciated and thank you to the people who have already donated some. Have a great week and keep warm. From the Pinewood OSHClub Team.
