Reconciliation Week at Kelso High Campus 2017
National Reconciliation Week is held every year in Australia in recognition of the indigenous culture of the first Australians. This year the theme was “Let’s take the next steps” and the Kelso High Campus Aboriginal Education Team planned several activities to mark this special occasion.
The first was to invite Wiradjuri man Mark Saddler from Wagga Wagga to the school to provide a cultural experience to all students. Mark spent Tuesday and Wednesday providing an engaging program of activities to students in years 7-10. He talked about culture, respect, dance, country, history, reconciliation and language. He had both the students and teachers mesmerised with his knowledge of indigenous culture and encouraged the leaders of the future to continue assisting Aboriginal people to preserve their culture.
Mark addressed the entire school at a special assembly on Tuesday and was proud to witness the Leadership Team, the Aboriginal Representative Council and the Student Representative Council all stand together in recognition of reconciliation.
We plan to conclude reconciliation week with a BBQ cooked by the Aboriginal Representative Council on Friday. Students will be able to purchase a sausage sandwich and a drink at lunch time.
The activities organised throughout this important week have given the opportunity to all our students and teachers to come together and recognise the proud indigenous culture of our great country and we hope that we can continue taking steps in the future towards reconciliation.

Anniversary Celebrations – Claim the Date – Friday 4th August
2017 is the 10th Anniversary of Denison College. A cross-campus team is working on our celebrations, which will be held
during Education Week on Friday 4th August from 5:30-8pm at the Kelso High Campus.
An exciting and varied program focused on student performance and achievement promises to make for an outstanding
evening of entertainment and celebration. A particular feature of the celebrations will be the combined music, vocal
and dance ensembles.
Guests on the evening will be able to enjoy canapés and refreshments not only prepared and served by our students,
but, as much as possible, sourced from our own farms.
The event is open to all members of the Denison College, Bathurst High and Kelso High Communities, past and present.
Tickets are available from both campuses of Denison College - $30 for adults and $15 for children and should be
purchased before 30 June.
Public Education Foundation Awards
The Public Education Foundation provides scholarships to public school students to help them achieve their full
potential. They also offer awards to acknowledge teaching and learning excellence in public education
It was a great privilege to be invited to attend both the Public Education Foundation Awards Ceremony and the Mayoral
Reception which preceded it at Sydney Town Hall on 17th May.
Iuliia Orieshyna (Bathurst High Campus) was thrilled to receive a Harding Miller Scholarship, which will provide her with
her own lap top and enable her to get extra support, particularly in maths. I was able to introduce Iuliia and her mum to
the Secretary for Education, Mark Scott, who personally congratulated her on her scholarship.
Professional Experience Hub Schools Conference
A team from both campuses and Charles Sturt University attended the third Professional Experience Hub School
Conference in Darling Harbour 18-19 May. This two day conference examined the progress being made in the 23 schools
across NSW that have been selected to be part of an innovative program developing formal partnerships between
schools and their partner universities.
Will Letts (CSU) and Jacqui Hood (Denison College HT Mentor) presented a workshop titled Shared Responsibility:
Rethinking Reciprocity in Professional Experience which gave an overview on the ways that we are working with our
university partners to enhance the quality of initial teacher education and build the capacity of our campus teams to
provide effective supervision for prac teachers.
Professional Learning
Over 30 leaders from local secondary schools attended Dr Simon Breakspear’s High Impact Leaders of Learning program
at CSU Bathurst on Monday 22nd May. This is an ongoing project led by the College team in conjunction with Dr
Breakspear to developing effective leadership practices that impact on student achievement.

National Reconciliation week
This week (27 May – 3 June) is National Reconciliation Week, an important event on our national Calendar. These dates
mark two important milestones: The 1967 referendum and the historic Mabo decision. It is 50 years since the 1967 ref-
erendum, a time where Australia took a significant step forward in reconciliation The theme for NRW2017 is ‘Let’s Take
the Next Steps’. Kelso High Campus celebrated reconciliation week with a number of events, including cultural activities
throughout the week led by the Aboriginal Education Team and the Bathurst Wiradjuri Elders. Members of the ARC and
the SRC spoke at Tuesday's assembly about the importance of taking the next steps together.
Last few weeks of term
We are just over the half way point of the term. As we head into the dark, cold month of June, I would like to remind
everyone of their responsibilities as on task, safe, and respectful learners at Kelso High Campus. Over the past few
weeks we have focussed on uniform, being in the right place at the right time and keeping the playground clean. I am
pleased to say that students have responded well and that there has been improvement in these areas in the past few
weeks. It is important that we continue on the good work we have made as well as focussing on the main game –
learning.
Commendation Assemblies
The first of our Commendation Assemblies for Semester One was held two weeks ago, as Year 12 received their reports
and commendation awards. The Commendation Assemblies for 7-11 will be on Thursday 29 June. Parents, families and
friends are most welcome to attend.

from our community to come along, wear your Kelso High colours and join in. It is an early start, but should be fun - 8am
at the Peace Park.

10th Anniversary Celebration
School Uniform
School uniform is an important expectation for students a Kelso High Campus allowing them to be safe, respectful and on task at school. As the weather becomes cooler it is often easy for students to adopt bad habits with their uniforms and we are working hard to ensure students are dressed ap-propriately.
All students are expected to wear a jumper with a school logo - this may include the school
hoodie, Senior and volley ball jumpers. Western and representative jumpers are no longer accept-ed.
Students should wear black trousers, skirts, shorts or tracksuit pants. No large logos and tights are not permitted.
By wearing correct school uniform students show pride in their presentation and our school.

Debating
Kelso High Campus has again achieved early success in the Premier’s Debating Challenge. The Year 7 & 8 teams participated in workshops early last week to refine their approach to the competition. Following these workshops, Kelso High Team A was successful against Kelso High Team B in the Education topic ‘That we should ban schools from setting any educational tasks outside of school hours’. Team A argued that the impact of work outside of school results in high levels of stress and has a negative impact on learning. They continued their argument by suggesting that the most valuable learning occurs with the guidance of teachers in the classroom. Both Kelso High A and Kelso High B were successful in the following two rounds against Blayney High School. The teams were given the following topics ‘That we should ban TV from reporting violent news before 9pm’ and ‘That all important sporting events should be on free to air TV’. Both teams presented well-chosen examples and arguments in order to triumph over their opponents. All speakers were congratulated by the adjudicators, who commented positively on their presentation of ideas, effective and strong case structure, as well as, their ability to refute the opposing arguments. Thank you to Mrs Meredith Healey, Mrs Sandra Chapman and Mr Rob Bartulovich for adjudicating the debates and providing additional points on improvement. Kelso High Team A now progresses onto the regional quarter finals, as the Western Zone Two champions, next term. Congratulations to Team B: Kobi Salway, Narayan Wainwright, Callum Furner, Jeremy Igglesden Team A: Cooper Sutherland, Jacob Cole, Mickayla Doungmanee and Thomas Henderson. Thank you also to the students who set up, chaired and were timekeepers for these debates: Ben Howarth, Josh Muggleton, Jared Bignell, Darcy Single and El-vaz Limani.
National Art School Excursion
On Monday 22nd May, a group of our talented Aboriginal Visual Arts students went to a workshop at the National Art School in Sydney. The aim of the workshop was to celebrate Aboriginal art, while showing high achieving Aboriginal students after school opportunities in the Visual Arts. The students worked with practicing artists from the National Art School and created amazing artworks in just a few hours. Students from all over NSW took part in the day which was organised by Solid Ground in association with Carriage Works in Sydney. The students had an amazing time creating art in the amazing surroundings of the National Art School which is one of the oldest art schools in Australia. The building was once a prison, however, now it houses some of Australia’s future creative superstars.
Dancing
Congratulations to Hannah Talbot, Kathleen Murphy, Tia Muggleton and Mia Ryan who have been
selected into the Western NSW Dance Ensemble. The dancers will be performing at the Western NSW
Dance Festival on the 7th of June at Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre.
Congratulations to Tyson Rice who has been selected into the 2017 Aboriginal Dance Company run by the Arts Unit and Bangarra Dance Theatre. Tyson will be performing at Schools Spectacular and State Dance Festival later this year. Well done, Tyson. We are very proud of your achievement!
Generous donations to the Kelso High Campus Photography Department.
Two Bathurst photography enthusiasts, Doug and Elizabeth Fulton, donated their col-lection of analogue camera, lights, flashes and camera equipment to the Kelso High Campus Photography department. Their generous donation means that the students that are currently studying Photography in Years 9 to 12 can experience analogue photography and darkroom practice. Doug even donated his first ever camera to the school, a Kodak six-20 ‘Brownie’ made between 1937-1940.

Solution to Stroevey Number 228 Bad spellers
ANSWER
21: Many years ago, before modern education in the new millennium, one problem in schools was basic spelling and grammar. To combat this and raise achievement, teachers were ad-vised to start at the very beginning, at the youngest age. Once they had managed to breathe new life into lessons, progress came quickly - success was then guaranteed. How many spelling errors would modern scholars identify in this paragraph?
