LIKE MOST FOLKS OF OUR AGE, I LOOK AT THEGRANDCHILDREN AND OTHER FOLKS THEIR AGEAND MARVEL AT THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF TODAYSGADGETS. WHILE MANY OF US HAVE A HARD TIMETURNING ON THE TELEVISION, CLOCKS AND ALLOF THE BUTTONS ON THE RADIO.....ASK THESESAME FOLKS ABOUT THE PAST AND MOST DONOT HAVE A CLUE.

IT IS UP TO US TO INFORM OUR OFFSPRINGSABOUT THE SACRIFICES THAT HAVE BEEN MADESO THAT THEY HAVE THE LIFESWLE THAT THEYNOW ENJOY.

JUST SIT DOWN WITH THEM AND EXPLAIN WHAT OURGENERATION HAS BEEN THROUGH. TAKE FOR INSTANCE,THE GREAT DEPRESSION OF THE 3O'S, \AM/2, KOREA ANDVIETNAM, RATIONING, ETC....MOST WILL LISTEN, BUT WILL NEVERUNDERSTAND HOW WE SURVIVED AFTER ALL OF THAT.

FLESHING OUT TTIE PIPELINE, I95O

ByAlbertJ. McAdoo

The ?ipeline" was a means to assemble replacements for Overseas Assigruneirts.

The Army was doumsizing rapidty in 1945-46. At Camp Miles Stmdish in Massachusetts

alone over one millionmen, inchrding uihole Divisions, wene discharged dtringthis pedod-

Some gnits were r€taind for occupation duties but most of their strength would be offered

s€paration and many werc dischargd. These vacancies would bc fillod by individuals from ftestatss viath pipeline!

The United States responded to tbe UnitedNations request to Commit Trmps to Korea in

rcsponse to tbe invasion of the Repubtic of Korea (ROK) by the North Koreans' ( NKPA )crossing the 38th Prallel on JUNE 25, 1950. The U.S. Army had four Divisions in Japan

These Divisions were understrength, adequale forthe Occupdion Missioa, but

inadequate for the new mission tlut they would be catld tpon to provide. Every ele, ment ofthese Divisions was at rcdlrcod shength by about one third. In addition the srryport ele, ments had

only Light Tanks and fewer gms in the ertillery. The Infantry Regiments had only two

Ba:talions instead of the usual thrce.

The deplolment of tnoops committed uras limited to Battalion sized rmits dtre to limited

transport from Japan to Korea In addition to the limitations offered the next crisis would be the

shortages of ammunition. Training stocks ufrile adqtrarc fortraining purposcs howeverthe

expenditnes in Combat would quickly corurume the limited stocks on haod.

The commitment ofunder strength uits, piece-meal would prcv€ to be costly in

casualties and the flow of Replacements through the existing pipelin€ systcm would prove to be

in-adequate. The needed re,placements would come frrom state side units. These Units would be

directed to transfer trained personnel whercver available. Newly inducted rwtuits currently in

taining would not be availabte for several more months. As an aside, in 1959 I met an old

soldier with a Medical Discharge. He had servd an indefinite enlistmenr He told me he ededtup in Korea as a result of this swe€,p. Someone finally looked at his 201 file ufiich indicated he

was born in 1890, and sixty years old- He was reassigned to Japan. He had his wife and his 1949

caddy shippd overseas too somehow!

Someone gotthe bright ideato activate"Inactive Enlisted Reservists". Tbese individuals

would be late WW tr vfto were tained for assignments, but were unneeded at the Wars end-

They would be separated bttr would have a six year commitment prior to final fisfuflgs. Some

Post war enlistees on thre year enlistnrents would be discharged prior to the beginning of the

war in Jure 1950. Draftees however could get caught up in the Inastive call up.

I found one draftee from Hawaii ufro was to be separaied after Jrme 25, 1950. To keep

his records straight he was seearatea and transferred in to tlre inactivate neserves. At the same

time he was activated and placed on active duty, and all on the same day!

10

Other Unitd Nations countries, were slow to commit hoops. Over twenty would

eventually make commihents. United Staes Naval and Air force rmits were quick to respond as

they had all manner of Units already in the Far East- The British were the firsg other than the

United Starcs to respond withNaval Units and some Grormd Troops fr,om Hong Kong.

The Activated Entisted Reserves would be activated for one year and all would be

separated by Chrismas 1951. Your author has extensive National Archives lt{aterial collectda&er seveml visits since 1990. My Archive collection is mostly limited to the 5th Regimental

C.ombat Team (RCT). The flow of Enlisted Reserve (ER )rcplacrm.ents into fte 5th RCT began

in eamest in Dece, mber 1950. It peaked in January and was completed by the end of March 1951.

We pick trp the sth RCT story inDecember, 1950. The first enlistod reservist were

reponing into the 24th Division replacemeirt company. The 5th RCT was in division neserve

after the interrrention of tbe Chinese Communist Forces, (CCF) in Nove, mber 1950. The Sttl

Army rmder the command of General Walker ordered the Eighth Army to cease offensive

operations, and to bcgin an orderly withdraual to the soudr

The Second Divisioa was chosento coverthe witbdrawal. Errors were made at all levels

and as a result the second Division was to take heavy casrralties at the battle of Krmu-ri. The

CCF continued the pressre on Eighth Army until they ended back to the 38th . Defemsive

positions were finally established south of the Han River. The Sth RCT was placed in reserve ofthe 24th Division and would rcmain the,fe through the holiday pcrid

General Walker died in a motor vehicle accident juS before Christmas on Decembet23,

1950. This void was filled with Lt Geoeral Ridgrvay uAo arived in Japao just after the holiday-

General lvlacArthur, Commanded the Fr East Theafcr and Korea part of his responsibility, and

therefore General Ridgu,ay first rcported to him. General Ridguay took over Eighth Army at a

time u&en all elements in rctreat and needing reorganization. The flow of replacements had

diminished, due to the exhaustion of the available trained replaements. The intervention of the

CCF complicated the ned to put boots on the gnounq ASAP. The recent activation ofNational

Guard Divisions did not solve the available replace, ment problem, because these Divisions were

not combat ready. The actirdion of the Enlisted Reserves was the best sorrce of replaceme, lrts

that remained to the pow€rs to be.

Clearly the discharge of the WW II Bilitary establishment had been overdone. General

Ridgway ap,parently was I sound choice. The defeafed Eighttl Army continud it's retnograde

passing south of the 38th parallel, crcssing the Han River and ending up on the Puk-han [Ian

River line. Other Eigbth Army units lost the City of Seoul as the frie, ndly units wittrdrew sor*h.

The first batch of ER replace, ments arrived in December and were assigned to various

companies as needd. Some ofthese replacements were non commissioned officers. The 5th

RCT found ogt that they all needed some mor€ trainilg. Service Company set up a combat

training section and all of these ER replacements were given intense infantry tainin$, some

needed more than others. The 5th RCT was in 24th Division reserve over the holidays- While in

reserve the fifttr would have to provide patrols as needed.
