REG 216 – experience, the basis for confidence.

Generators are the mostcomplex and expensive single elements in a powersystem. The generator protection system musttherefore be designed formaximum dependability andavailability. Continuous andsecure power delivery is themain objective for powerutilities and their cus-tomers.

REG 216 systems have already been used success-fully in the generator pro-tection field for a number ofyears. Experience – the basis for confidence – enables us to install this protection for all generatortypes in power plantsaround the world. Two different versions are available: REG 216 andREG 216C compact.

The field experiences of the REG 216 systems are numerous. Based on this broad experience and actual knowledge about theincreasing customer demands, the REG 216 is continuously beingenhanced.

The system is designed to be used with generators and generatortransformer units over a wide power range. Applications in Hydro, Pump-Storage, Gas, Combined Cycle, Steam and Cogen-eration Stations, either for New, Retrofit or Upgrade Installa-tions, are realized by this flexible system.

The REG 216 generator protection with its system modular hard-ware and software, its extensive function library and many otherfeatures satisfies even the most demanding specifications.

SYSTEM ASYSTEM B

High availability

The availability of protection systems in powergeneration stations has to be continuouslymonitored and shall be so high that the preven-tive shut-down of an important generator incase of a single protection failure will never berequired. This high availability is achieved by:

■ a minimized number of HW modules■ continuous self-monitoring■ display of actual values■ proven hardware and software concepts.

Accumulated experience

More than 1100 units have been sold in lessthan 11 years. Different types of installationswith customized requirements have beenrealized. Several fast and successful trips fromgenerator faults have been recorded.

REG 216/REG 216C systems have been in-stalled for generators with power ratings from10 MVA to 812 MVA in different countriesaround the world.

Redundancy

Hardware and software redundancy is adaptedto the functional requirements.

A fundamental principle of plant operationis that, when a generator’s protection is out ofoperation, the generator has to be isolated. Therefore, two separate systems are the state-of-the-art for generator protection, as it is notpossible to provide a remote back-up protec-tion for a faulted generator.

In accordance with this philosophy, twoindependent groups of protection functions areaccommodated in either two separate hardwareracks (REG216) or in only one rack (REG216C),but with two completely independent hardwaregroups.

Modularity in software and hardware

The REG 216 are generator protection systemswith modular hardware and software.

The systems can be customized to fulfil allspecific demands by selecting the correspond-ing software and hardware modules.

Comprehensive software library

The REG 216 system includes an extensivefunction library from which any selection forabnormal service and fault conditions can bemade.

Any function out of the library can be cho-sen and activated once or several times. Eachfunction can be combined together with exter-nal inputs to provide a total protection scheme.

Extensibility

The modular structure of the software and hardware permits easy extension for all pro-tection functions matching the increasing appli-cation requirements and to achieve the desiredredundancy.

User-friendly HMI

■ Using a Laptop PC the user is guided bythe menu’s and help texts.■ Full documentation of all the nettings and recorded information is provided. ■ Remote HMI is obtained by using modems.

Open communication strategy

■ REG 216 offers several outstanding featuresincluding local and remote communication. ■ A personal computer can be connected lo-cally and remotely (by modem) for testing andmaintenance purposes.■ SA and SMS interfaces according to ABBand international standards are available.

Reduced costs

Besides improved performance the REG 216 protection system offers high flexibility and thepossibility of adding new functions using thesame hardware set, which has a positive economic impact.

Self-supervision and integrated software testingfeatures save maintenance costs by extendedmaintenance intervals.

With system monitoring an extension of the lifetime of the protected primary equipmentcan be achieved.

The use of redundant functions results in sav-ings of potential revenue losses resulting from apower outage.

Comprehensive self-supervision

Self-supervision ensures maximum availability, dependability and security. Hardware and soft-ware parts are continuously supervised and in-formation about internal faults is immediatelyrecorded.

An up-to-date overview of the protectionsystem and device status can be requested atany time. System diagnostics information canbe provided via the serial interfaces.

The main areas of application for the REG 216system are the protection of generators andgenerator-transformer units. Retrofit and newinstallations can be equipped with REG 216 sys-tems without restrictions.

The modular structure and a large variety offunctions available makes this system extremelyflexible and suitable for several applications.

Maximum system dependability and availabilityis achieved by utilizing a multiprocessor con-cept offering continuous self-supervision.

In addition, diagnostic and post-fault analysisare an integral part of the protection.

The selection of the proper protection conceptis based on the generator’s importance in the context of the power network and energysupply.

The comprehensive software library containsprotection functions, measuring functions andmonitoring functions. The whole SW function-ality is listed below.
