way to scale Web-based transactions withJuniper Networks MX960 Ethernet ServicesRouters.

The MX-series routers boost Gmarket’snetwork capacity and manageability byconsolidating multiple Gigabit Ethernet switchingsolutions into an easily managed topology thatuses JUNOS software, Juniper’s single-sourcecode network operating system. The MX960’sAccess Control List (ACL) capabilities also fortifyGmarket’s network security.

In addition, Gmarket deployed JuniperIntegrated Security Gateways (ISG) — purpose-built, high-performance firewall and VPNgateway — to secure against network threats.

This upgrade follows Gmarket’s previousdeployment of Juniper’s NetScreen-5400firewalls, designed to deliver best-in-classperformance capabilities and configurationflexibility for large enterprise, carrier, anddatacenter networks.

The NetScreen-5400 can scale to30Gbps of firewall and 15Gbps of VPNthroughput, and handles up to 1 millionconcurrent VPN user sessions to provide secureaccess to Gmarket’s Web servers, networkapplications, and databases, which host highlysensitive e-commerce data.

“JUNOS was the key differentiatingfeature for our purchase decision,” said KiseokLee, group manager of Gmarket’s SystemOperation Group. “Its proven reliability, excellentCLI tools, and powerful filtering functionalityenable us to provide more reliable and secureservices to our customers.

The cflow and port-mirroring functionsoffer real time traffic visibility and detailedanalysis. Additionally, the MX-series seamlesslyinteroperates with our NetScreen and ISGfirewalls.

“We’re confident we selected the bestplatform to meet our current and futurerequirements,” added Lee. “While our initialassessment pointed to the MX480, with sixinterface card slots, we decided to go with

MX960 routers — which provide up to 12 — toaccommodate future expansion. The Junipernetwork infrastructure is already deliveringsuperior network performance and return oninvestment. We are now considering futureexpansion with the new Juniper Networks EX-series Ethernet switches.”

The MX960 platform delivers up to 960Gigabits per second (Gbps) of switching androuting capacity, which enables more revenueper platform and provides the scale to helpmaximize Gmarket’s return on investment.Purpose-built for the most demanding networkapplications, the MX-series establishes a newindustry standard for capacity, density, andperformance.

Gmarket’s ISG 1000 and ISG 2000gateways integrate best-in-class DeepInspection firewall, VPN, and DoS capabilitiesinto a single platform.

They enable secure, reliable connectivity, along with network and application-levelprotection, for critical, high-traffic networksegments. The ISG series can be upgraded tosupport full intrusion detection and prevention(IDP) capabilities to provide robust network andapplication layer protection against current andemerging threats.

“Network-based businesses such asGmarket depend on highly scalableinfrastructure that performs at a high level andwithout unnecessary complexity or overhead,”said Tim Kang, vice president of Korea forJuniper Networks. “The Korean marketrecognizes the unique value of the MX-seriesin delivering high-performance, innovativerouting and ease of management.”

The demonstrationwas held at the HP Technology Forum & Expoin Las Vegas.

Showcasing Microsoft Hyper-Vvirtualization technology over a 10GBASE-Tnetwork using CommScope and Solarflareproducts, the demo used iSCSI as the vehicleto talk to the centralized storage where virtualmachines and their data are stored. The Hyper-V role uses the native Microsoft SCSI driverswithin the native Windows Server 2009 platformto communicate with the storage devices, start, and run the virtual machines.

Together, the solution shows theconvergence of iSCSI and networking over alow-cost and low-power 10GbE network withoutthe need for special iSCSI host bus adaptors, other protocols, or specialized network gear.

Using IOMeter to drive over 2900Mbpsof iSCSI storage network traffic, the topologyconsists of a 10GBASE-T NIC and switch usingSolarflare technology and Ethernet trafficrunning over 100 meters of SYSTIMAXGigaSPEED X10D Category 6A cabling in a six-around-one four-connector configuration —representing the worst-case channelconfiguration as specified in the TIA augmentedCategory 6 standard.

The cornerstone of this solution,Solarflare’s Solarstorm SFC4000E vNIC 10GbEcontroller, accelerates network traffic efficiently

with wire speed throughput on all the majorvirtualization environments.

“The proliferation of server virtualization, the growth of rich media applications and theconvergence of data and storage networking aredriving the need for cost-effective, easy-to-use10GbE networking,” said Bruce Tolley, vicepresident of marketing, SolarflareCommunications.

“With 10GBASE-T technology thatsupports virtualization, iSCSI and networkconvergence over standard Ethernet, datacenters and enterprises can easily and cost-effectively upgrade their networks to 10GbE andsupport advanced business applications,” saidLuc Adriaenssens, senior vice president, research and development and technology,CommScope.

It also creates efficiencies by simplifying routingand operations through the use of statisticallymultiplexed 100GbE links, in comparison tocarrying the same amount of traffic split overmore commonly used 10GbE links.

“This demonstration is another importantstep in the future of 100GE networking and we’repleased with Cisco’s latest advancements,” saidJohn Schanz, executive vice president ofnational engineering and technical operationsfor Comcast Cable. “Comcast’s singleconverged core IP network already carries morevideo, voice, and data traffic than any other, andthis new achievement will allow us to scale fortomorrow, while continuing to drive capital andoperational efficiencies today.”

“The Cisco CRS-1 was purpose-built todeal with the exploding growth in IP traffic thathas been fueled by video-based services,” saidKelly Ahuja, Cisco vice president and generalmanager of core routing business unit. “Bydeveloping a 100GE interface for the CiscoCRS-1 platform, providers like Comcast cantake advantage of economies of scale, flexibilityand increase the quality of service delivery asthey move towards 100G IPoDWDM networks.”

The implementation tested by Comcastand Cisco is consistent with the emerging IEEE802.3ba 100GbE standard and validates the useof 100GbE and IPoDWDM technologies overComcast’s own production network, which wasthe first, and is currently the world’s largest, 40GIPoDWDM network.

World’s fastest Ethernet compute cluster

relies on Woven Systems 10GbE fabric

Woven Systems Inc., a provider ofEthernet Fabric switching solutions based onits patented vSCALE technology for datacentersand high-performance computing (HPC)clusters, announced that the ATLAS computecluster at the Max Planck Institute forGravitational Physics in Hannover, Germany, achieved top ranking among the 285 GigabitEthernet clusters in the most recent TOP500list of supercomputer sites. The ATLAS clustersuccessfully uses the Dynamic CongestionAvoidance feature in Woven’s 10-GigabitEthernet (10GbE) fabric to reach a performancelevel of 32.8 Teraflops, making it the fastestEthernet cluster in the world today.

“What is remarkable about the ATLAScluster is that we were able to take the lead verycost-effectively with a creative combination ofmore processors at lower clock rates and ahigher Ethernet switching efficiency,” explainedProfessor Bruce Allen, director of the MaxPlanck Institute for Gravitational Physics.“Woven’s 10-Gigabit Ethernet Fabric switch isable to deliver sustained performance at animpressive 64 percent of the theoretical peak. The HPC Linpack experts we consulted tell usthat they have never seen such a high level ofEthernet efficiency on such a large cluster.Without the Woven switch, ATLAS would not bethe world’s fastest Ethernet cluster. It’s thatsimple.”

The Institute attributes Woven’sunprecedented efficiency to the vSCALE ASIC’sDynamic Congestion Avoidance capability that

is constantly balancing traffic loads intelligentlyand in real time along available paths in thenonblocking 10GbE fabric. A cluster ’scomputational efficiency is critical to itsperformance, and efficiency is determined bythe network’s ability to handle interprocessorcommunications. The efficiency is calculatedusing the Linpack benchmark from the ratio ofthe actual performance to the theoretical peakperformance for all processors in the cluster.Of the 285 Gigabit Ethernet clusters on the Top500 List, only six achieved a computationalefficiency greater than 60 percent, and of those,ATLAS was the most powerful. Of the remainingGigabit Ethernet clusters, 76 had efficiencies of50 percent or less; 97 had efficiencies of 51-55percent, and 106 had efficiencies of 56-60percent.

The new ATLAS compute cluster islocated in Hannover, Germany, at the MaxPlanck Institute for Gravitational Physics, alsoknown as the Albert Einstein Institute. Thedivision of Observational Relativity andCosmology, which built and operates the cluster,is part of an international collaborative effort tomake direct detections of gravitational waves, first predicted by Einstein’s General Theory ofRelativity in 1917.

The cluster must process a multitude ofcomplex data analysis algorithms that scrutinizepast and present measurements to search forpatterns expected to result from passing waves. The four next-generation detectors deployedthroughout the world generate over a terabyteof data daily, which is sent to all participatingmembers for analysis.

The ATLAS cluster consists of 1,342compute nodes occupying 32 full racks. The useof Intel Xeon Quad-core processors gives thecluster over 5,000 CPU cores. Each server nodehas its own dedicated Gigabit Ethernetconnection to a Woven TRX 100 Ethernetswitch, which has four separate 10GbE uplinksto the EFX 1000 Ethernet Fabric Switch at thecore of the Ethernet fabric. Because this

configuration is not oversubscribed, it assuresnonblocking throughput performance for bothinterprocessor communications and storageaccess.

“We specifically designed vSCALE tocreate an Ethernet fabric that constantlyperforms at peak efficiency, and the Max PlanckInstitute has confirmed this in the world’s fastestEthernet cluster,” said Joe Ammirato, Woven’svice president of marketing. “Gravitationalwaves are seminal to Einstein’s General Theoryof Relativity, which is at the core of moderncosmology. Woven is proud to play in a role theInstitute’s search for the existence of thesewaves as the enabling interconnect technologyfor the ATLAS cluster.”

MARKET INTELLIGENCE

While FE and GE semiconductor players are

established, opportunities for generating

10GbE revenue are still up for grabs, IDC

reveals

The lion’s share of the worldwideEthernet market revenue continues to begenerated by vendors well established in theFast Ethernet (FE) and Gigabit Ethernet (GbE)semiconductor segments, including Broadcom,Marvell, Realtek, and Intel.

However, IDC observed that themarketplace has begun to adopt 10-GigabitEthernet (10GbE) and that both startups andwell-known public vendors earned notable10GbE revenues in 2007.

“The worldwide Ethernet semiconductormarket remained flat in 2007 compared to 2006,but 10GE sales are clearly ramping,” said AileenArcilla, senior analyst for Semiconductors atIDC.

“What is interesting to note is the numberof startups that are currently playing in thisspace, with some actually surpassing sales of10GE chips compared with establishedcompanies. However, since we are still in theearly adoption phase, it remains to be seen whowill clearly be the 10GE semiconductor marketleader.”

Additionally, IDC believes ampleopportunity remains in the FE and GbEsegments as customers continue to deploythese interfaces in their networks, and as bothFE and GbE ports are finding new life amongsmall and medium-sized businesses.

IDC’s study, “Worldwide EthernetSemiconductor 2007 Vendor Shares: BiggerUniverse of Companies Showcases 10GEPotential” (Doc #212759), reports on the 2007market share of the Ethernet semiconductormarket.

For the first time, the report offers twonew sections: a breakdown of Ethernetsemiconductor market share by speed — FE,

PMC-Sierra announces availability of 10G

EPON white paper

PMC-Sierra has released “10G EPONBrings Advantages to the Fiber AccessNetwork,” a white paper that details how 10-Gigabit Ethernet passive optical network (10GEPON) technology will spur deployment of next-generation high-definition IPTV and other high-bandwidth applications.

As the deployment of fiber-to-the-home(FTTH) technologies in the access networkaccelerates, vendors and technology innovatorsare looking ahead to solve next-generationapplications’ bandwidth requirements. Theseapplications will demand far greater bandwidththan current broadband access technologiesprovide.

One attractive new option is 10G EPONtechnology, which offers a tenfold leap inbandwidth to 10Gbps in the broadband accessnetwork over fiber while providing core protocolcompatibility with current 1G EPON solutions. This paper, written by Lior Khermosh, chiefsystem architect for PMC-Sierra’s FTTHbusiness, and Gilad Aloni, PMC-Sierra EPONproduct manager, provides an overview of 10GEPON technology.

PMC-Sierra introduced the industry’s firstcomplete reference designs for 10Gbps IEEE802.3av EPON optical line terminals (OLTs) andoptical network units (ONUa) in March 2008.The PAS8001 reference design for 10G OLTsand the PAS9001 reference design for 10GONUs integrate all the functionality requiredfrom an OLT and ONU running at 10Gbps,including third-party commercial transceivers, and use PMC-Sierra’s EPON capabilities toimprove system performance and reduce OEMs’time to market.
