Ripples: Sioux Lookout's Arts @ Culture Directory is a project that began in 2010 when the need to showcase Sioux Lookout's many talented artists and artisans was recognized. Initially a collaborative project between the Sioux Lookout Creative Arts Circle and the Municipality of Sioux Lookout, the Municipal Cultural Division has endeavored to continue the efforts to actively promote and enhance the artistic community of Sioux Lookout by updating the directory for 2015.
In this third volume, the capacity of the directory has expanded to include cultural organizations, celebrations and arts and culture related businesses as well as artists and artisans.
We sincerely hope that you enjoy this informative and detailed listing of Sioux Lookout's many creative individuals, organizations, businesses and groups.

Hana is a local visual artist. Nature of Northwestern Ontario$ borealforestis a subject, as much as material for the artwork she creates. Gabrielle Cosco is an award winning illustrator, artist and graphic designer that was born and raised in Sioux Lookout, Ontario. She studied art and design in Barrie, ON at Georgian College and has been employed as an illustrator and/ or graphic artist by highly creative, award winning design firms and companies such as Kempenfelt Graphics Group and Treefrog Inc.
She returned to Sioux Lookout in 2013 to get back to her roots, her family and her passion for story telling and art. She is currently employed by Kwayaciiwin Educational Resource Centre (KERC) in Sioux Lookout and enjoys creating a variety of branding materials, educational resources and children's books for the 24 communities serviced byKERC.
Gabby also enjoys travelling up north and teaching the students of the communities about illustrating, art, design and technology.

Klaus's photography/Fine Art Prints found recognition with collectors in Canada and the US, as well as with Parks Canada, National Geographic and the Museum of Nature in Ottawa.
He sees photography as a creative and expressive process much like painting or sculpture, rather than a recording of reality. His subjects range from traditional landscapes to close-ups to impressionistic and experimental work, in series of colour or B&W/Duotones.

Northern Lights Community Theatre is an inclusive, locally based not -for-profit organization run by spirited, theatrically minded individuals who desire to bring local talent and novices on stage and behind it. Northern Lights Community Theatre was incepted in 2012 has since successfully presented several plays including Neil Simon's The Odd Couple (female version), Norm Foster's Office Hours and in November 2014, Opening Night also by Norm Foster.

Ktds Kaleidoscope is an Arts Ellucation Organization and Community Group based out of Sioux Lookout, ON that presents performing arts shows for children and families.
Kids Kaleidoscope presents five shows per year with performing artists in a variety of mediums including dance, theatre, music, magic/science and puppetry. All shows are geared to the young audience. Each season, two workshops are organized in the local schools (Gr. 4-8) with visiting artists.

The Sioux-Hudson Entertainment Series brings big city performing arts to the remote north at small town prices. Each year, the Series presents at least six pieces of professional live entertainment in Sioux Lookout. The volunteer committee strives to provide a balance of drama, music (classical and contemporary) and dance. In 2006, the committee celebrated 25 years of great entertainment and thousands of hours of volunteerism.
Highlights of years past include Bruce Cockburn, Jim Cuddy, The Vinyl Cafe with Stuart McLean, The Rankin Family, Danny Grossman Dance Company, Prairie Oyster, Jeff Healey, annual visits from the Manitoba Theatre Centre and performances by the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra.
The Sioux-Hudson Entertainment Series relies on ticket sales, sponsorships from local businesses and individuals, and an annual grant from the Ontario Arts Council to cover the cost of putting on the six concerts .

Laurel likes to use/reuse bits of fabric from other people's lives in her weaving, weaving pieces of worn or discarded textiles into something of beauty. She has woven textiles for floors and tables from cast-off blue jeans, worn wool socks, threadbare old blankets and old silk shirts.
Her involvement as a Peace Weaver in The Thread Project (www.threadproject.com)- a true local and international community art project- will always be a highlight.

Kanina Terry is a part -time craft person from Sioux Lookout. She is very crafty and innovative in making fine quality items that she sells online, at pow wows, and the local farmers market. She sews items that are practical and functional on a day-to-day basis such as camera cases, bags, tobacco pouches, oven mitts, and quilts.
Since becoming a mom in 201 o she now makes items for babies and children such as, moss bags and bug hats. She also makes beautiful jewellery using stones, shells, beads, and silver.

Klaus was always fascinated by music and picked up guitar at a young age. After exploring rock and blues of the day, he quickly moved on to baroque, jazz, Brazilian bossas, country - never bound by categories.
He studied Jazz guitar at the music faculty of the U-of Cologne in Germany, with Eddy Marron, which opened doors for engaging in many styles and venues and he subsequently toured and recorded throughout Europe, Ontario and in New York and Los Angeles. Now, living in Sioux Lookout, he enjoys playing with friends and occasional performances locally.

Open Stage is an event held once a month for the love of music ... so true, on the spot and spontaneous, entertaining - artistic expression and creativity in the moment - in real time.
Everybody is welcome to perform- any musical style - any level - players and singers. And of course listeners, music lovers and ... hopefully ... new, unheard talent... to have a good time enjoying live music and supporting local talent.
Hosted by former professional musicians, the format is loose and informal, with plenty of chances to sit in, jam, improvise - musical adventures full of surprises and imperfections.

The Festival of Carols is a seasonal community choir that begins in September and runs through to the first week of December with practices held on Monday evenings at St. Andrews United Church. The Sioux Lookout Public Library is proud to display the work of several notable (local and regional) artists including Carl Ray and Ahmoo Angeconeb on its walls. It is always open to the possibility of promoting the work of emerging and established talent. The Community Media Room is equipped with creative software for digital artists and is available for events and workshops.

Friends of Cedar Bay operates an equestrian facility that boards horses on a co-operative basis and provides riding lessons, recreational sleigh and wagon rides and will soon be providing equestrian assisted riding programs. Friends of Cedar Bay also organizes nature experiences such as a spring 'Owl Prowl' walk. At the Lakeshore area it provides refreshments and a chance to warm-up for skiers, walkers, snowmobilers, and horseback riders in the winter at one of the wilderness cabins. Cedar Bay also raises funds for capital projects and improvements at both the stable and the Lakeshore area.

Wawatay Native Communications Society serves the communication needs of First Nations people and communities of Northern Ontario. It does this through the distribution of a bi-weekly newspaper, daily radio programming, television production services and a multimedia website that seeks to preserve and enhance indigenous languages and cultures of Aboriginal people in Northern Ontario. Established in 1974, Wawatay also provides translation and interpretation services. Mission: "To provide media capabilities and content that address the unique needs of the Nishnawbe people"
