Ecosystem is an organisation that includes all living organisms in an area as well as its physical environment, funtioning
together as a unit
Biodiversity of the arctic tundra:The arctic tundra has a relatively low
biodiversity. There are only around 1700 species of plants that live in this
habitat.Few reptiles or amphibians and only 48 land mammals that make thishabitat their home.
(by Izzati)Search the Internet for information on the following physical factors in the allocated ecosystem.
Brief information
The amount of sunlight received depends on the diffrent seasons in Arctic Tundra.
Short summer days & long and cold winters occur most of the time. ( between -40 degrees celsius to 18
degrees celcius)
Salinity:Both saltwater and freshwater can be found in the Arctic Tundra.
Strong Winds
(done by Cheryll and a few from Ashley/Izzati)Classify at least eight of the living organisms found in the allocated ecosystem into the categories below:

1. Producers:Liverworts,Grasses,moss, lichens,Bearberries,Artic Willows
2. Primary Consumers:Pika,Musk Ox,Lemming,Arctic Hare,Caribou
3. Secondary Consumers:Arctic Wolf,The Ermine
4. Tertiary Consumers :Brown Bear,Polar bear,Grizzly Bear,Walrus(Live in the water)
5. Decomposers:Artic mushrooms
For each of the living organism, find a picture and write a short description on the organism. You may wish to include feeding
habits, region in the ecosystem where it is normally found etc.
Producers-
Moss:A source of food for primary consumers living in the Arctic Tundra likeCaribou.
Primary consumers-Caribou: The Caribou has looks of a large mule deer or small elk with softhollow hair, long legs, large hooves and antlers. Female and male Cariboushave blunt muzzles.
Secondary consumers-
Arctic wolf:The Arctic wolf live mostly in Northern Canada and Alaska,in theparts of Greenland,Iceland and Northern Europe. They can adapt to differentenvironment easily and is able to live in habitats with low temperature allyear round.Due to the cold weather, the Arctic wolf live in total darkness for5 months.Their preys are lemmings, assorted rodents and Arctic hare but willocassionally hunt preys that are bigger than them like the caribou.Ifneeded, the Arctic wolf will hunt the musk ox as a team.
Tertiary consumers-
Walrus live in shallow water by ice floes or land. Their habitat is the entirepolar basin.
Decomposers-
Arctic mushrooms are decomposers in Arctic Tundra which break down deadmatter into water, mineral salts and carbon dioxide back to the Earth.
(done by Cheryll)Create a food web using at least eight of the living organisms listed above. You may wish to use Microsoft PowerPoint to
create your food web. Save your food web as a picture. Finally copy and paste your picture in this s ection of your wiki. (can't
upload the mindmap)
Artic mushrooms break down the tertiary consumer (Polar Bear) that consumed arctic wolves (secondary consumer) and the
wolves consumed primary consumers (such as musk ox,caribou, lemming) and they consumed the producers(such as the
grass,caribou moss)
Attention! The food web is not able to be insert, and will be printed as hardcopy.(hand in toMiss Dee)
(done by Izzati)Give at least one example for each of the following relationships in the ecosystem
1. Predator-prey relationship: Wolf and Caribou>A wolf is the predator of the caribou to transfer
energy. The caribou eats the plants and the wolf eats the caribou to obtain energy from the plant that waseaten by the caribou. It doesn't obtain as much energy as it would by eating the plant directly but it stills gets
some energy(Extracted from:Answers.com/predator-prey relationships)
2. Parasitism: Tape worm in Caribou>The tape worm in the caribou takes in the nutrients inside thecaribou.Soon the caribou will die and the tape worm gets its food.(Extracted from:Answers.com/what is an
example of a parasitism in the tundra)
3. Mutualism: Lichen(any plant consisting of fungus) exist in cohabitation with blue or green Algae, bothbenefitting from one another. The algae provides organic nutrients and the fungus provides minerals for the
growth, from this union they become beneficial to all other organisms and growth appears.
(Extracted from:Answers.com/what is an example of mutualism in the tundra)
