MILLS HIGH SCHOOL SUMMER READING INCOMING FRESHMEN ADVANCED STANDING Read the following sections in Edith Hamilton’s Mythology : Part One: The Gods, the Creation, and the Earliest Heroes Part Two: Stories of Love and Adventure Part Three: The Great Heroes before the Trojan War Part Four: The Heroes of the Trojan War Take notes on the reading so you will remember the major gods and goddesses, their realms, the major heroes, and the story of the Trojan War. You will be tested (3% of semester grade) on this information the first week of school. You will not be allowed to use your notes on the test; they are for study purposes. This reading is the foundation for our mythology unit. During the semester you may read selections from Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, Virgil’s Aeneid , and Dante’s Inferno. Background knowledge of the foundations of mythology will aid in your ability to analyze more difficult texts
