Dear Grade 7s

I know its been a tough, long and boring

lockdown. But with these online lessons and help

from your parents we can make it through this

and still have our education. Please try to think

happy thoughts and know that each and

everyone of you will make it to grade 8 if you

have faith in yourself and still focus in your

education in this difficult time.

your textbook for additional reading.

HOW TO USE THESE ONLINE NOTES?

• There are 4 sections that will be covered in fractions, we do 4 lessons of one hour each and one lesson of 30 min in a week. That gives you a total of 4.5 hours to complete this section of work for the week.

• Please assign 1 hour per section excluding the revision examples. Use the 30 min or more if you want, to do the revision exercises.

• You will ONLY get SOLUTIONS once I see that you have completed all the exercises!!!!! In the mean time you can use a calculator at home to check your final answers.

What Perimeter?

• The perimeter of

a shape is the

total length of its

sides added

together

What is Area?• Area measures the

surface of something,

usually in square metres

(𝑚2), square centimetres

(𝑐𝑚2) or square

millimetres (𝑚𝑚2).

PERIMETER OF A RECTANGLE

Example:The perimeter of this

rectangular lawn = 5 + 3 + 5 + 3 = 16 m

AREA OF A RECTANGLE

Example: The area of this lawn is= 5m x 3m = 15𝑚2

GENERAL FORMULAS USEDWHEN CALCULATING AREA AND

PERIMETER OF RECTANGLES

•Perimeter of a rectangle = length + width + length +

width or (length + width) × 2

•Area of a rectangle = length × width

The diagram below shows an L-shaped floor.

The perimeter of the floor = 3 + 1.5 + 2.2 + 3 + 5.2 + 4.5 = 19.4 m

Example of area

The diagram on the right shows an L-shaped floor.

How could you find the area of this floor?

The area can be split into two rectangles, A and B.

Area of A = 4.5 × 3 = 13.5 𝑚2

Area of B = 3 × 2.2 = 6.6 𝑚2

Total area = 13.5 + 6.6 = 20.1 𝑚2
