. he excellent qualities of our renowned Torpedo and Double Torpedo free-wheel .

I1ub are \veil known to everyone. Altl1ough the fitting of the Torpedo hu.b, a.nd above all of the Double - Torpedo hub with 2 speed gear, greatly improved the bicycle, the wish was frequently expressed to have more speeds. And was this · · wish not fully justified ? A motor-car of 50 HP and more would be useless in mountainotts districts if it

were not arranged for several speeds. And n1an is supposed to do all the work without any such arra11gen1ent, and to overcome with his feeble strength, mountains as well a? head winds without any further aid .

~ In due recognition of this fact and in the endeavour to offer our esteemed friends the latest and best only, we have by unceasing efforts and with the aid of an up-to-date plant brough tout

\

a new design, which greatly surpasses the Double-Torpedo with regard to its manifold applica~ility.

Our Universal- Torpedo with 4 speed gear free-wheel and back-pedalling brake (patented in all industrial countries) is the result of a careful study based on our long years of ex-.Perience. This triaster-piece of eng~neering will allow of not less than 12 combinations, as besides

the driving wheel also the free-wheel and the back pedalling brake n1ay be used . at each of the four speeds.

Many an aged cyclist wl1o had cast his wheel aside because of the too gre~t exertion it •

required of him, ·will fetch it out a.gaip, and with .the aid of the 4-speed; gear be will now easily be a match for mottntains and .headwind and enjoy the pleasure of cycling as befor~e.

Approved .under the most difficult conditions, the Universal- TorjJedo is a device of the · highest qualities; high class precision work combined with the best materials ~admit of the

. .

fullest guarantees being given, so that this device will soon be introduced all over the world's market.

The cyclist using this hub will ignore hills or headwinds; besides the operating of the .speed change gear is extremely simple and is effected, the same as with the Double .. Torpedo by · moving a small lever on the top tube of the frame~ On the lever quadrant the different speeds

'

are indicated ·by figures; the whole speed gear is disconn.ected at Position 3 (normal), at which the force is transmitted direct from the pedals to the wheel; while at Position 4

the speed is increased by abt. 30 °/o, Position 2 the speed is reducedfhy abt. 25 °/o, Position 1 the speed is reduced by abt. 40°/o, compared to the direct drive.j .

Experimental tests under various road conditions have show11, that preferably ·a gear of abt.[67 · .

increased when the speed gear is engaged. We also have devoted special attention to the construction of the Back-pedalling Brake, which shows as its peculiar feature a · smooth and yet absolutely positive brake effect, which can be regulated within very wide limits.

l~he hub thus combines all advantages and surpasses everything hitherto knovvn . •

- •

For ensuring a continuous proper operation of the Universal -Torp.edo, cleanliness is a chief condition. It is therefore advisable to clean the hub from time to time with some petrol ; this is done by laying the wheel on the sprocket side and pouring petrol into the hub tht:oug.h the cap oiler on the shell; the petrol will then clean out the gears; then the wheel is laid on the lever

.

side of the hub and petrol is poured in through the spring oiler on the hub sleeve, whereby the brake gea·r will be cleaned. After such cleaning it is absolutely necessary to again oil tl1e hub, in the same manner through all oil holes provided, using an oil free from acid. ·

Fitting the Universal- Torpedo and atta·ching the Change De vie~.

FITTING:

The Universal- Torpedo is carefully tested before despatch with re·gard to its prqper ad .. justment and perfect operation, so that all re-adjusting is superfluous.

l.,he hub may therefore be fitted into the wheel the same as it i~ unpacked. · .

ASSEMBLING : • •

The thtts fitted wheel is assembled with the frame the same as any ordinary fr.ee-wheel hub in attaching the levers the following points should be considered.

. of the chain emerging from the axle, must be brought in line with the upward lever-rod and be secured in such position by n1eans of the washer and the lock-nut ''b'' (fig. 2). After the small screw "h" (fig. 4) of the clip has been removed, the lever is then fitted exactly as with the · Double-Torpedo (see fig. 1), only the screws ''c'' must not yet be fully tightened. The ad~

justing collar ''g'' and the lock-nut ''f'~' of the same (fig. 1) mu~t be screwed back so fa·r, that at least 10 12 mm of the thread on the spring sleeve ''e'' are visible, so that the ro·d be tigh-

~

tened when necessary at a later date .

AD USTMENT:

. For obtaining the proper tension of the rods, the change lever (fig. 1 and 3) is moved into the position 1 whereupon the whole change-lever device is moved so far forward, that the lever rods will neither be too loose nor too tight.

CONTROLLING THE TENSION. •

The lever-gear is then controlled as to its proper tension by holding the change Iev.er exactly in the middle between the positions ''1'' and ''2'' and theti moving the pedals, which must

Page 11: 19XX - Fichtel & Sachs Universal-Torpedodokumente.strewi-fahrradwerke.de/191x-fichtel-und-sachs...A motor-car of 50 HP and more would be useless in mountainotts districts if it were

I

move freely backwards and forwards at this position of the lever. The same f.ree movement must exist at the intermediate positions b.etwee11 ''2'' and ''3'' and between ''3'' an.d ''4'' respectively. If this it not tbe case, the lever device must be moved forward or back until such free movement is obtained· at tl1e intern1ediate posjtions. Then tighten the lock~nut ''f'' and screws ''c''. If after some time, in consequence of a fatigue of the spri11g the tension of the lever gear should

.

become slack, this may be easily remedied by screwing the collar ''g'' forward or back, whereupon the lock-nut ''f'', which of course had to be first loosened, is tightened again. As we

experienced with the Double-Torpedo that in son1e instance notwithstanding these screws being tightened, the clip mov·ed under the influe11ce of the vibrations in riding, we have provided the above mentioned set-screw ''h'', which is secured by drilling a small hole intQ the frame tube with a 2,5 mm twist drill tl1rough the hole in the strap provided for the said screw ''h'' ,a which is then screwed into this l1oleo It is then impossible for the lever device to be moved .
