The Church of St. Luke is joyful, welcoming, caring, active family of believers striving to grow in knowledge of and love
for God and each other. Challenged by the Word,
nurtured by the Eucharist, and enlivened by the Spirit, we seek to live the message of Jesus in
serving the needs of others both within our Parish and in
the larger community.

19th Sunday in Ordinary Time - August 12, 2018
Reflection: Reflect upon/Share about a time when you learned something really important and fruitful about life. What was the process of learning it? What types of things kept you from learning it sooner? How do you think God was involved in your learning? What can you change in your life now to help you listen to God more readily?
Alternate: As you look back on your life, what has drawn you closer to the Lord? How has your relationship with the Lord given you life? What can you change in your life now to remain even closer to the life he gives?
Gospel
No one can come to me unless
the father who sent me draw
him, and I will raise him on the
last day. It is written in the
prophets: They shall all be
taught by God. Everyone who
listens to my Father and learns
from him comes to me.

GOSPEL MEDITATION -
ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE August 12, 2018 - 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Have you ever approached a hushed group and were certain they were talking about you? It's an uncomfortable feeling to catch people murmuring about what you did, said, or didn't do. It breeds division and exclusion. In today's Gospel, Jesus invites us to just the opposite. The reading opens with the crowds "murmuring" their doubts about Jesus after he has proclaimed himself the Bread of Life. "Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph ? how can he say 'I have come down from heaven'?" In his response, Jesus brings up the Israelites and the manna God brought them in the desert. If you turn back to the story in Exodus, you'll see another similar word: murmuring. As the going got tough, the Israelites doubted Moses and God's plan to protect and care for them as a chosen people. Here, Jesus proposes a difficult theological concept. Jesus himself is "the living bread" and "flesh for the life of the world."
This is not an exclusive concept. "Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from him comes to me." Why? Because "the Father who sent me draw[s] him." The next time you're at Mass, take a few moments to watch the communion line. Young and old, families and singles, diverse races and cultures and stories — we are all drawn to the Eucharistic table. Catholic doctrine may require faith, but it is a faith possible for anyone who seeks truth. Christianity does not hide behind locked doors in an exclusive clubhouse, whispering behind the backs of nonbelievers. Jesus compels us to share the love of God the Father for his children, that we one day be joined with Him and "live forever." WHY DO WE DO THAT? CATHOLIC TRADITIONS EXPLAINED
Question: What are we celebrating on the feast of the Assumption of Mary?
Answer: The Assumption, along with the Immaculate Conception, are two Marian dogmas that have been infallibly defined by the church. The Assumption proclaims the reality that Mary was taken up body and soul into heaven. This was God's special gift to her in response to her total giving of self to God's plan and will. The church believes that Mary was immaculately conceived, that is, conceived without original sin. This led the church to believe that she did not suffer one of the key consequences of original sin, death and corruption. The Orthodox Church celebrates the Dormition of Mary, the belief that Mary did not die but rather fell asleep and was thus assumed into heaven. What significance does this feast have for our lives as Christians today? This feast is above all an assurance and hope of our continued life with God. Modeling ourselves on Jesus and living the Christian life molded by Jesus' values, is certainly the sure path to God. As a result, God will not leave us orphaned or alone to suffer the emptiness of death. Rather we believe that death is merely a transformation of our present state into an even more glorious and eternal relationship with God. This is the hope and assurance that Mary's assumption celebrates. It is a celebration of our assumption as well. She is one of us, providing a model of what God has in store for all who love and give of themselves to God. LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK Life can be confusing, and the demands and challenges of everyday life can easily cloud our vision. We can become tired. Because of all of the energy needed to manage our day-to-day routines, our spiritual lives can get neglected. Anger, apathy, bitterness, and competition readily distort our relationships with one another and with God. We are asked to imitate God and to put love, compassion, kindness, forgiveness, and gentleness over all things. We need to develop a strong life of prayer in order to bring balance to our lives and to realize who we really are.

Thank you so much for all of your generous donations for my mission trip to the Philip-pines in March of 2018! I was able to go with 20 other Catholics from the Newman Center at Grand Canyon University. We were able to visit an orphanage, host two healing masses at local colleges with the students, and deliver food bags and pray with the less fortunate living on the mountain. It was an incredible experience and I really appreciate your support, donations, and prayers! If you want to see a video recap of my trip, go to YouTube.com, search “Ericka Holzer” and the video will be on my channel!
Thank you again, and God Bless! -Ericka Holzer

The Journey of Faith begins with your questions:
What is faith? How does faith grow? What do Catholics believe, and why is it different from
other faith traditions?
Classes for the Christian Initiation of Adults are available for anyone who wants to learn more about the Catholic faith.
The process begins with an “inquiry” period, when questions can lead to exploration.
Wednesday, August 15 at 7:00 in the Youth Room
If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about the Catholic faith, or is interested in completing their sacraments, please plan on attending.
If you have any questions, please contact Deacon Jerry Stenovec
