PFA THANK YOU

We have a small but very dedicated group of parents who volunteer their time as members of the THPS Parents and Friends Association. They attend a monthly meeting, volunteer for School Banking each Tuesday, organise events, attend events as volunteers, participate as classroom helpers and get involved in every aspect of school life. I would like to say a great big thank you to the members of the PFA – their help and support is so valuable and we are very grateful for their positive contributions to our school. If you would like to join the PFA or volunteer for School Banking in Term 4, please leave your details with the office. TERM 3 HOLIDAYS

I would like to remind families that school finishes at 2:30pm on Friday 20 September.

With the upcoming holidays, I encourage you to think about some of these recommended ‘home learning’ activities: • lots and lots of family conversations, • shared bedtime stories or reading in bed before lights out, • family walks, bike rides or playing in the park, • regular visits to the local library, • writing a letter or email to family and friends, • keeping a diary, taking photos or writing a book, • outings to all kinds of places of social, historic or natural interest, • join sporting clubs and activity groups, • play dates and lots of imaginative play that comes naturally to children of all ages, • cooking, building, art & craft or gardening together, • singing songs, dancing to music, playing board and card games. It is important that over the holidays, our students have some ‘down time’ and just enjoy being children and playing. So I hope our families enjoy this valuable time together and I look forward to you returning safe and well after the two week break on Monday 7th October 2019.

JSC ~ Sports Colours Day

On Wednesday the 18th September it was Sports Colours Day! Thank you to our Junior School Councillors for organising this great event. It was wonderful to see everyone wearing their favourite team colours. Also a big thank you to everyone who donated. We raised a total of $633.70! This money will go towards buying new equipment for our yard that can be used during break times.

LLLLIIIITTTTEEEERRRRAAAACCCCYYYY NNNNEEEEWWWWSSSS

On Thursday 5th September, two of our Grade 6 students, Deo D and Ethan S, represented Taylors Hill Primary School at the annual Debaters Association of Victoria Public Speaking Competition. They competed against eight other schools within our Northern Region. Both students were required to prepare a speech in response to one of three topics, they each chose the topic ‘From big things, little things grow.’ They were also required to respond to two impromptu speeches on the day and were given 5 minutes to prepare their responses. Ethan and Deo did an amazing job to draw upon their knowledge to speak about the following two topics, ‘My favourite book is…’ and

‘The most interesting member of my family is…’

It was pleasing to see to the manner in which Ethan and Deo engaged the audience with their creative, well thought out responses. This was also confirmed by the adjudicators’ feedback. Only 5 points separated the winners and our students! Well done Ethan and Deo, a phenomenal effort and

we are all very proud of you.

TUESDAY 10TUESDAY 10TUESDAY 10TUESDAY 10thththth SEPTEMBERSEPTEMBERSEPTEMBERSEPTEMBER

On Tuesday 10th September, the Grade 5 students attended an excursion to Copperfield College to experience a day in the life of a secondary school student. They participated in a variety of subjects including Robotics, Food Technology, Science, Physical Education and also completed a tour of the school facilities. We noticed how students store their personal items, including their school bags and lunches, in their own lockers that are protected with a safety lock and recognised how the school facilities are organised into different year levels to assist students in navigating themselves between classes. Food Technology was a hit with the students who enjoyed making mini pizzas including their favourite toppings, some of which weren’t very mini at all! They created algorithms to make robots move, practising first on their blindfolded classroom teachers! In Physical Education, they developed teamwork skills and understood the importance of focusing on participation rather than winning.

The students demonstrated our THPS values remarkably well and are looking forward to transitioning into secondary school after they graduate from Taylors Hill Primary School at the end of Grade 6.

Prep Community Walk Excursion On Friday the 6th of September, as part of our integrated topic, “My Neighbourhood” Prep students had an excursion to the Taylors Hill Community Centre. On our walk we saw houses, dogs, cars, a bus stop and people in our community. At the Community Centre we

learned about why we have a community centre and participated in a

Zumba session to some upbeat music. We then walked back to school.

The Prep students would like to thank our parent helpers, Prep teachers, Mrs Benham and Mrs Gillias for a fun and exciting

excursion.

Hello THPS families,

The following is an update on what has been happening in Physical Education.

ATHLETICS

On Tuesday 3rd September 7 students from Taylors Hill Primary School represented the Caroline Spring District in the Keilor Division Finals. These students qualified a month earlier through their efforts in the Caroline Spring carnival. We had some fantastic results within the Keilor Division.

Connor, Blake, Nathan and Andres represented the district in 12/13 Male 4 x 100 meter relay and finished 2nd. Sarah finished 3rd in the 11 year old 200 meters sprint and Tarmz finished 3rd in the 9/10 year Discus. Well done to all the students who tried their hardest and represented the school in the right spirit. We have 3 students who will continue their journey heading off to the regional finals on the Friday 11th of October. Tarmz and Kayleigh both qualified by placing first in the 9/10 and 12/13 year old shot put event, while Kayleigh also qualified in the 12/13 100 meter sprint again finishing 1st. Connor we also continue due to finishing 2nd in the 12/13 110 meter hurdles. Congratulations to all these students!

INTERSCHOOL SPORTS

On Friday 30th August and Friday 6th September the Grade 6’s represented THPS in the Caroline Springs Primary Schools Gala days. We had teams in 5 different sports volleyball, cricket, softball, basketball and tennis. All these students worked extremely hard throughout Terms 2 and 3 to develop their skills. All students represented THPS by displaying the school values during competition. We had some terrific results in the individual events. Our girls basketball teams played off in a semi final, our mixed volleyball team finished second and our mixed tennis team won their competition, progressing to the next stage. This will be played at Christ the Priest Primary School next term. A big thank you to all the Grade 6 teachers who helped prepare our students for these events.

WALKATHON & HEALTH EDUCATION WEEK

During Week 9 we had National Health and Physical Education Week. This is a nationwide initiative that highlights the importance of HPE in the curriculum. During the week we had activities at recess and lunch time planned for all our cohorts. Our P-2 students participated in a range of activities, such as ball bouncing and basketball shooting, hula hooping and skipping, these were led by our wonderful Grade 6 House Captains. During lunch times, we had activities such as dodgeball, downball and our Grade 6 students V’s Staff Handball game. All these events had a large turn out and it was great seeing many students involved in physical activity. Friday was the THPS school walkathon. The sun was shining and it was great to see many parents come out and get involved while our students walked the course and stopped to participate in the detour activities along the way. A big thank you to the PFA who every year put in an enormous effort to help organise the fundraising event. Also a big thank you to the School and House Captains who helped to facilitate the event.

Daily school attendance is important for children to succeed in education and to

ensure they do not fall behind socially and developmentally. If your child has:

less than 90% attendance been absent from school during Term Three for 5 or more days

been consistently late to school

you will receive an Attendance letter, so school can support you to improve your

child’s attendance.

We place great importance on all students being at school on time, every day the

school is open for learning. Your child’s attendance and participation are

important in the development of their academic, social and emotional skills.

Our school attendance data shows student absence across the school is largely due to family holidays. It is vital that holidays are planned during school holidays where possible, and not during the term. If you are planning to go on holiday during term time, ensure that you talk to your child’s classroom teacher and area Assistant Principal in advance, so we can work on developing a Student

Absence Learning Plan.

In Term 4, a ‘Student Absence Learning Plan’ will be in place for any student on a

family holiday and absent from school for 5 consecutive days or more. We know a

family holiday is a great learning experience for students where they can experience

different cultures, broaden their knowledge, expand their interests and learn new

skills. holidays where they can experience different cultures, broaden their

horizons, expand their interests and learn new skills. Whilst absent from school,

your child will be missing out on important curriculum, however, we know learning

happens beyond the classroom. This plan will help you to inspire curiosity, promote

conversations with your child and record the everyday travel experiences your

family has.

LEARNING CENTRE NEWS In the Learning Centre, we are looking forward to the holiday break, relaxing in the sunshine and enjoying a good book! Reading is a great

way to relax by becoming immersed in a terrific tale or to learn something new. Children learn by example so encourage reading by

having a book or newspaper handy, have a family conversation about who is reading what and explore your local and city libraries during the

holidays.

CONGRATULATIONS to Oscar Prep B and Rudra 6A for your excellent Book Reviews – these are now on the Orbit home page and on

display in the Learning Centre.

WEEK 2 – TERM 4 14TH – 18TH OCTOBER 2019

The Learning Centre will be the place to be to grab a great book, buy a present or get in early for

Christmas!
