Diabetic RetinopathyDiabetic retinopathy is one of the micro vascular complications of diabetes mellitus. Eye, kidney, heart and brain are the organs that commonly get affected with diabetes.

Early diabetic retinopathy needs no special treatment apart from good control of diabetes, hypertension and lipids. However, the doctor may do tests like fundus photography, fundus fluorescein angiography and optical coherence Tonography in early or advanced cases for better management.

Diabetic macular edema is the common cause for decreased vision in diabetes. Bleeding into the eye (Vitreous Hemorrhage) in advanced cases (Proliferative retinopathy) also can severely reduce vision apart from cataract and glaucoma that can affect diabetic patients.

Laser photocoagulation is the main treatment for diabetic retinopathy. Intra-vitreal anti-VEGF injection maybe required to treat difficult cases. Vitrectomy surgery (minimally invasive vitrectomy surgery 23G/25G) will be required for cases with blood inside the eye or with retinal detachment.

Early screening for diabetic retinopathy can prevent complication. Meet your eye doctor for further details…
