The course examines the global security landscape, the current trends and challenges in both hard and

soft security, the European Union’s interests and impact, regional security architecture relative to Europe

(EU, NATO and OSCE), as well as key state actors. The course also analyses Europe’s interaction and

impact on its neighbours and other regions in the world, such as Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. Relevant

global challenges such as climate change, migration, terrorism and organised crime among others are

explored throughout the course.

Apart from the substantive elements of the course, skills enhancement is prominent in the curriculum

with the inclusion of weekly practical sessions and exercises on leadership, negotiation, conflict analysis,

communication, working with the media, policy analysis, intercultural competence, etc. A particular

focus is placed on participant-led modules including national security policy presentations, debates,

reading seminars, and individual exercises such as drafting policy briefs.
