Classroom Happenings

Kindergarteners received a special visit from St. Kateri Tekakwitha before the Mid-Winter Break.

St. Kateri was the first Native American to be canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church.. She was a member of the Mohawk tribe. St. Kateri suffered from yellow fever when she was young, resulting in scarring from sores. She often wore a blanket to cover her face. She converted to Catholicism at 19 and died at age 24 due to complications from her childhood illness.

In addition to learning more about the life of St. Kateri, the classes also had discussions about St. Kateri being from an Eastern Woodlands tribe. The students heard what resources would have been available for clothing, food, and shelter for Eastern Woodlands tribes, and how those differed from Dakota, Southwest, Inuit, and Northwestern Coastal tribes in North America. One presentation highlight was when Mrs. Shore showed the Kindergarteners a collection of arrowheads from the Hillsdale, Michigan, area that her great-grandfather had passed down through the generations.

The 7th and 8th grade Spanish elective class brought “Little Red Riding to Hood” to life, completely spoken in Spanish. The students performed “Caperucita Roja” for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classes before the break. Spanish teacher Ms. Hilbert said her students took the lead developing the stage directions and actions once they knew they would be performing.

1% Challenge ContinuesAll Saints continues participation in the 1% Challenge.

The challenge asks us to dedicate 1% of our day (roughly 15 minutes) to Scripture-based prayer. Each school-day for 30 days, students will spend 1% of their day reading and reflecting on a designated scripture passage.

Each day’s passage is shared with families through our social media channels. We encourage parents to participate in prayer with their children. During our 30-day challenge, students will have the opportunity to attend an Adoration service at the school.

We are excited to start the new year focused on Scripture! The 30 school days will conclude shortly after Ash Wednesday, allowing us to begin our Lenten journey strengthened by prayer.

Family Trivia Night – Rules of Play

1. Team Composition. This event is designed to provide a fun night out for our All Saints Families and their extended family members (grandparents, cousins, etc.). Unlike other local trivia nights, this event will not be advertised to the general public. Teams must consist primarily of All Saints Community members. Teams must also contain a balance of children and adults.

2. Team Number. The structure of the event suits teams of 4-6 members best. Smaller teams are encouraged to join forces with other families to create an appropriately sized team wherever possible.

3. Registration. Pre-Registration is required. We regret that we will be unable to accommodate Walk Ins for this event due to event organization and prize calculation.

4. Answer Aides. Teams must use only their amazing minds to answer questions. Cell phones and other devices or aides must be stowed away from the tables of play.

5. Suggested Age of Team Members. Questions will be written to challenge the minds of those aged 9-99. Questions will be read (and answered) quickly and therefore we hope to maintain a calm, quiet environment so that the participants can hear the clues.

6. Question Rounds. Each round will contain a total of 11 questions – 10 regular questions and one extra credit question. Extra credit questions are optional and will only be counted in the event of a tie. Questions will be read and appear in written form.

7. Score Updates/Rounds. Score updates will be provided at the end of every two rounds. At least 5 rounds will be played, with a possible 7 rounds possible depending on the time. We anticipate the night will conclude by 7:30 p.m.

8. Mulligans. A Mulligan is an automatically correct answer that can be purchased at the time of registration for $1.00. Mulligans are used when the answer to a question is unknown or if the team is unsure of the answer provided. A total of 5 Mulligans may be purchased per team. Only one Mulligan may be used per round.

9. Challenge. All questions have been vetted by two committee members. In the event of a dispute, a process will be in place to handle challenges. Please keep in mind that this event is designed to provide a FRIENDLY atmosphere of healthy competition!

10. Breaks. A 10-minute break will be provided at the end of each 2 rounds of play. 11. Concessions. Concessions will be available before and during the event. Volunteers will

make extra snacks and drinks available to players during the event. 12. Prizes. Two family-themed prizes will be awarded to the teams scoring the top two

highest overall scores. Prizes will be put together so that they may be split in the event one teams consists of more than one family.
