Ballend-Refers to the brass ferrule affixed tothe end of a musical string.

Ballend Nylon-Sometimes referred to asFolk Nylon, these are standard nylon guitarstrings that have a ballend affixed to one end.This enables quicker and easier installation ona nylon classical guitar or facilitates the use ofnylon strings on a steel string guitar.

Bronze, 80/20-An alloy of 80% copper and20% tin, sometimes referred to as brass.Delivers a strong, deep bass response withextremely bright and crisp overtones whenused as wrap wire for acoustic guitar strings.Extremely brilliant sounding when new, theybegin to lose some of their new sound afteronly a few hours of use. Preferred by manystage and studio performers.

Bronze, 85/15-An alloy of 85% copper and15% tin, 85/15 bronze combines the brilliantsound characteristics of 80/20 bronze with thegreater sustain usually found in phosphorbronze strings.

Bronze, Phosphor-Introduced to stringmak-ing by DAddario, phosphor bronze strings lastlonger than conventional bronze alloy strings.The small percentage of phosphorous in thealloy helps them to retain their sound longer.

Composite classical guitar strings - in thiscatalog the term Composite refers to a newfourth generation polymer that is used as amulitifilament core for the wound strings andas a monofilament for the third string in ourPro-Arte Composite series.This new polymer isthe closest man made equivalent to natural gut.

Flat Wound-Refers to winding a flat or rib-bon-like wire onto the core of a musicalstring. All DAddario flat wound strings aredigitally wound for precise wire spacing andthen polished in three different steps to createan incredibly smooth, accurate string.

Floss Nylon-Refers to the multi-filamentyarn-like material used as the core of wire-wound strings for use on classical guitar, oud,lute etc.

Half Round-Introduced by DAddario in theearly 70s, Half Round strings start out as tra-ditional round wound strings that are thenprecision ground, leaving the outer surface ofthe string smooth and flat wound in appear-ance, while retaining the flexibility and most ofthe tonal characteristics of a round woundstring.

Hex Core Wire-A high carbon steel alloythat is six sided in cross section.When used asthe core or center of a musical string, the 6edge points firmly grip every turn of the wrapwire, ensuring a longer lasting string. Usedexclusively on all DAddario steel core strings.

Laser-selected Pro-Art Nylon-The nylonused for all DAddario Pro-Art treble stringsis an exclusive, slow extruded nylon that hasharder and denser properties than convention-al nylons. After extrusion, each string is passedthrough laser inspection where approximately200 measurements are taken along the lengthof the string.The data is compared and aver-aged by an exclusive high-speed computerprocess and the string is sorted into the vari-ous tensions listed in this catalog. Strings thatdo not meet tolerance specifications in anyone of their measurements are rejected in thisprocess.This ensures consistent string tensionsand virtually perfect intonation from everyProArt string purchased.

Lock twist - the ballends on all D'Addariostrings are fastened with a standard twist anda series of tightly wound lock twists. Usedexclusively on all D'Addario plain steel strings,it ensures that the twisted area will notunwind when under tension.

Mono-filament Nylon-Single strand extrud-ed nylon commonly used for the treble stringson a classical guitar.

Nickel Wound-A vast majority of the nickelwound strings made today are made of a steelalloy that has an electroplating of 8% purenickel.This is the formula used in the worldfamous DAddario XL string line.The steelalloy is ideally suited for magnetic pickups andthe nickel-plating provides a cosmetic finish,oxidation resistance, and surface softness. It isbright sounding and long lasting without pro-moting premature fret wear.

Polished-A unique process of sanding or pol-ishing a round wound string into a semi-flat-tened surface.We utilize three grits of sandpa-per to produce the sheen you see in our FlatTops line. At DAddario, we wind, wrap, sand,and polish the strings on the same machine.

Nylon Strings-Nylon strings usually refer tothe complete complement of 6 strings used ona classical guitar. Usually the first three (treblestrings) are mono-filament nylon and the lastthree are wire wound on a floss nylon (multi-filament).

Nylon Trebles-Refers to mono-filament nyloncommonly used for the first three strings on aclassical guitar. DAddario uses 3 types ofnylon treble material; Laser-selected ProArtnylon, rectified nylon, and standard nylon.

Rectified Nylon Trebles-Beginning withoversized standard nylon, each string is center-less ground to precise tolerances (+/- .0002").Used in all DAddario Classic series sets,rectified nylon strings have a more mellowsound and are preferred by many professionalsfor recording work and for use onRenaissance instruments.

Round Core Wire-A high-carbon alloy wirethat is round in cross section. Used for plainsteel strings and by some music string manu-facturers in place of more costly hex corewire. Unless treated properly, it can yield looseor prematurely dead strings. See Hex CoreWire for further explanation.

Round Wound-Refers to the winding of roundwrap wire onto the core of a musical string.

Silverplated Copper Wound-Bare roundcopper wire is electroplated with pure sterlingsilver.This wire is ideally suited for classicalguitar strings.

Stainless Steel Wound-The stainless steelused by DAddario is a 430 series highly mag-netic alloy. Used in the DAddario Prism line,430 stainless steel strings are excellent formagnetic pickup amplification and are notedfor their exceptional brightness, anti-tarnishingcharacteristics, and extreme durability. Also apreferred choice on acoustic/electric instru-ments.

Standard Nylon-This refers to commerciallyextruded material used by most other stringmanufacturers for classical guitar treble strings.Not recommended for the serious musiciansince control of diameter and density is usuallyunacceptable. Standard nylon is usually foundin such products as hair brushes or fishing line.

Wrap Wire-Refers to any material that isused to wrap or wind on top of a core to pro-duce a musical string.

About string tensions and gauges DAddario string sets are gauged so that when they are at concert pitch, the individ-ual strings feel near equal in tension. String tension is determined by vibrating length,mass, and pitch. Diameter alone does not determine a strings tension. By using differ-ent raw materials or by varying the ratio between the core and the wrap wire duringthe winding process, two strings with the same diameter, tuned to the same pitch,could have different string tensions. Comparing a DAddario .032 string to a competi-tors .032 string may not yield the same playing tension. For the most part, all plainstrings are made of high carbon steel; thus any brand of plain steel string with thesame diameter will have a comparable tension.Thats not to say that the quality of thewire used to make that plain steel string will be the same. At DAddario, we actuallymanufacture our own core and plain steel wire to ensure unsurpassed quality andconsistency.You should experiment with different string sets to determine whatsounds, feels, and plays best for you.

There are many factors other than string gauge that determine actual and perceivedstring tension on your instrument:

Scale length, or the distance from the nut to the saddle. (The longer the scale,the higher the tension for a string of the same diameter (mass)).

The flexibility of the instrument top and neck.

The string break-angle at the nut and saddle/bridge.

String height or action as adjusted at the saddle.

Truss rod adjustment (neck relief).

String tension is measured in pounds of pull per string. In this catalog, the total stringset tension is listed in the set listings.

Before deciding on a string gauge, be sure that your instrument is set up properly.High string action not only affects how tense the strings feel, but can also make forfaulty intonation.

Which String Set for Me?Whether choosing an electric or acoustic string, the right string tension for yourstyle is a matter of trial and error and is of utmost importance. Experimenting withdifferent tensions can bring out a completely different character in the sound of yourinstrument and in the style of your play. Players are often astounded to find that alighter tension set can actually sound better on their guitar.You should not assumethat the string tension the guitar manufacturer selected at the factory is the righttension for you.

Custom blending of light and medium sets or extra light and light sets is also anoption. For example, EXL140 combines the trebles of a regular light nickel electricset with the basses of a jazz EJ21 set.This allows easy bending of treble strings withthe heftier bass response of the heavier EJ21 strings.

Light gauge strings are the most popular and are recommended by most makers ofacoustic steel string guitars. Lighter overall string tension ensures longer soundboardand neck life. Heavier tensions are not recommended for guitars built with fragiletops. Medium gauge strings offer more projection on heavier built instruments. Forthose players who prefer to use heavy strings, heavy gauges are available.

Classical sets are gauged in light, normal, hard, and extra hard tensions.Although thetotal pounds of pull of classical string sets are much lower than their steel stringcounterparts, (78.2 lbs. for EJ43 light and 89.7 lbs. for EJ46 extra hard), string height,as measured from the fretboard, is set higher on classical guitars.This fact makes thetension difference critical.

The locking hold - The most securemethod of wrapping around the tuningpeg is to bring the extra string backaround and under the string as it windsaround the peg.This is especially criticalon strings that have no windings (plainsteel or classical nylon treble strings).

On steel string acoustic guitars, make surethe ball end of the string is firmly seatedunder the bridge by pushing down on thebridge pin while pulling up on the string.

At the bridge, it is essential to create a lock-ing loop to ensure against slippage. It is com-mon to loop the plain nylon treble stringsunder two times and the wound strings atleast once.This will ensure that as tension isapplied to the string it securely locks in place.

1 - mark the lowest pitch string at thenut with a marker (figure a).

2 - Remove the string and measure thedistance from the inner edge of the ballend (figure b) to the mark (figure c).Record this length as X and refer tothe chart below.

Use thumb and forefingers to gently stretch each string across itsentire length.Tune the string to pitch and repeat the stretching pro-cedure two or three times on each string.This will help stabilizeyour nylon strings more quickly. Care must be taken not to stretchthe strings too aggressively. In general nylon strings need morestretching time before they "settle-in."

Note: It is common for classical plain nylon treble strings (1st, 2nd,& 3rd) to last longer than the wound bass strings (4th, 5th & 6th).Most professional classical guitarists will go through two to threesets of wound bass strings for every set of plain nylon treble strings.To that end, you may wish to consider our 9-string sets, whichinclude two sets of wound bass strings and one set of trebles.
