Standardized Tests
• College Boards - In 1994-95, the average verbal score was 450 and math was 507.
Among students in the top ten percent in class rank, the average verbal score was 573and the average math score was 663. A five-year trend (1991.95) shows an increase of17 points in verbal and 23 points in mathematics for District students. During the same
time period the increase for Pennsylvania students was 2 points in verbal and math. In1995, 92% of the class took the College Boards. Eighty-eight percent indicated they weregoing on to higher education
• Stanford Achievement Tests - The average score in reading for District students is the76th percentile and the 83rd percentile for mathematics.
• Pennsylvania System of School Assessment - District students scored well above the
state average. In five out of six categories, the percentage of West Chester studentsscoring in the upper quartile exceeded those of Great Valley.
Academic Competitions
• Students from East High School placed first in Chester County and second in the state ofPennsylvania in College Bowl-style academic competition.
• Students from Henderson High School placed second in the southeastern Pennsylvania
region, second in the entire state, and sixth in the nation in Science Olympiadcompetition.
• The District’s three middle schools placed in the top ten in the southeastern Pennsylvania
region in the Science Olympiad.
• Four eighth grade students at Fugett Middle School placed third in the nation in ScienceBowl competition sponsored by the National Organization for the ProfessionalAdvancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE).

• A team of academics from East High School earned 30 medals for a first place finish inregional Academic Decathlon competition and placed tenth in the Pennsylvania StateAcademic Decathlon.
• The Henderson High School team earned 27 medals in the regional Academic Decathlon.
• East High School placed fourth out of 36 teams across the state in the 1995 MillersvilleUniversity Mathematics Contest.
• A team of Stetson Middle School students came in first among 20 competing teams in thefifth annual Geography Challenge.
• A team from Fugett Middle School won the first place among 9 competing teams in theChester County Energy Bowl sponsored by PECO Energy.
• The Peirce Middle School magazine, Peirce Perspectives, along with only 11 other secondary
school literary magazines in the state, was ranked superior by the National Council ofTeachers of English.
National Merit Finalists
• Ten students in the Class of 1995 - two from East High School and eight from HendersonHigh School - were named finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program.
• Another 15 students from Henderson and 11 students from East were commended by the1995 National Merit Scholarship Program.
• A student from East and a student from Henderson were finalists in the 1995 NationalAchievement Scholarship Program for Outstanding Negro Students.

A Celebration of Achievementin the 1994-95 Academic Year
Advanced Placement
• Members of the Class of 1995 at East and Henderson High Schools took a total of 227Advanced Placement Tests in various academic subjects; 70% of the scores were at orabove the level to qualify the students for college credit and/or exemption from freshman-level courses.
Governors School Scholarships
• Ten District students - four from East and six from Henderson, selected from thousandsof candidates - earned scholarships to the highly competitive Pennsylvania Governor’s
Schools for Excellence in the summer of 1995.
Student Musicians Recognition
• Three high school students in the West Chester Area School District earned the highlyprestigious honor of being named to the All-Eastern Honors Orchestra.
• The Henderson High School Marching Band earned the first place trophy in the annualBlossom Festival in Niagara Falls, Canada.
• Some 120 stringed instrument students from all three District middle schools earned fivetrophies in the annual Music in the Parks Festival in Williamsburg, Va.
Art Students Distinction
• Three East High School students and three Henderson High School students were awarded
Excellence in the Arts Exhibits ribbons at the Exton Square Mall in 1995.

A Celebration of Achievementin the 1994-95 Academic Year
• Artwork from East was selected for the final round of national competition sponsored by
the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers, Inc
Winning Sports
• In 1994-95, a senior at Henderson placed fourth overall in the National Girls’ GymnasticsChampionships in San Jose, California.
• The valedictorian of the Class of 1995 at Henderson was chosen to play in the Big 33Football Game between Pennsylvania and Ohio.
• A member of the Class of 1995 at East High School won the Chesmont League Cross-Country Championship in 1995 and placed eighth in the state and sixth in District I in the
1600 meter run.
Blue Ribbon Schools
Through the years “Blue Ribbon School” Awards have been presented by the U.S.Department of Education to East and Henderson High Schools, Fugett Middle School and
Mary C. Howse Elementary School.
