NOTES FROM THE DIRECTOR

Did you ever want to be a Nun for a day? ..Me neither, but if I did, these areprobably the kind of nuns I would want to be. "NUNSENSE II" is a delightful mixtureof comedy, parody, compassion and irreverence. It is not so much a sequel to as it isa continuation of "NUNSENSE I". It picks up where we left off.

Some people think Nuns are mean and insensitive and taht just isn't true. Why, ... these Nuns are just about the funnest folkds you will ever meet. They reallyknow how to kick up their heels and live ... so pay attention, you may learn a thing ortwo. Each of our five sisters is bigger than life with her own special style ofpersonality and humor. But underneath they display the common bonds that we aspeople all share, and we can all relate to. So enjoy the show and, hopefully, if we'vedone our job, you'll feel better when it is over.

Ladies and gentlemen, without further ado ...West Valley Light Opera presents ..."NUNSENSE 11.""Nun with the show!"

Tino Cecilio

A BRIEF HISTORY OF OUR ORDER

The order of the Little Sisters of Hoboken was founded in the seventh century bySaint Wilfred, a bishop of England. He established the first convent and school knownas the Wilfred Academy. His motto was, "We don't teach beauty, we radiate it!" Manyyears later, a small group of pioneering sisters set out for America to establish a moth-erhouse in Cleveland. but they got off the plane in Newark by mistake. The order was"found" by the Newark Airport Police and the new motherhouse was establishd inHoboken, New Jersey. It was at that time that the Order of St. Wilfred elected tochange the name to the Little Sisters of Hoboken and they have been affectionatelyknown as the "Little Hobos" ever since. It was from this convent that Sister MaryRegina, Sister Mary Hubert & Sister Robert Anne set sail for the Mediterranean toestablish the leper colony. Today the order has both nuns and brothers as members- all doing various good works in the Diocese of Newark. They also operate Mt. St.Helen's School in Hoboken.

A NOTE ABOUT THE CHARACTERS

Sister Mary Regina, A native of Ireland, is to the outside world a model MotherSuperior. But to those who know her, she is an outrageous quick-witted soul whoknows how to get a laugh. She tries to convince you that she is strict, but everyoneknows that her "bark is worse than her bite".

Sister Mary Hubert is a kind person who always tries to be understanding anddiplomatic. She teaches the Novices the ground rules, and is supposed to be dignified. But with the slightest bit of encouragement, she is ready to kick up her heels.

Sister Robert Anne is a tough, streetwise nun who has a heart of gold. All the kidsadore her because she speaks their language. And she can hit a baseball "out of thepark".

Sister Mary Amnesia is the picture of innocence. She cannot remember her pastand so looks at each new day with a childlike joy.

Sister Mary Leo had been an aspiring dancer before she entered the convent andis always eager to display her talent. She is very impressionable because she isyoung and can easily be led astray.

WHO'S WHO IN OUR STAFF

Tino Cecilio - Director In 1980 Mr. Cecilio did his first show withWest Valley Light Opera as a member of the chorus in "WonderfulTown." Now, fifteen years later, he has agreed to wear theDirector's hat. We wish him luck ... lots of it! Tino and NancyKwong (choreographer) have been working as a team since 1988and together, choreographed "Nunsense I" in the spring of 1993and "Gypsy" in the fall of 1995 for West Valley Light Opera. Tinofeels very fortunate to have met such a talented young lady. Thedirector comes to us, not without some merit. Having struggled

through three years of Junior college and two grueling years of San Jose State toearn a degree in Accounting, he became a man of the world, wised up and abandonedthat career. Now, an active member of the theater community, you may have seensome of Tino's work at Gaslighter Theater, Mitty High School, Saratoga Drama Group,San Jose Civic Light Opera, San Jose Stage Company, Sunnyvale CommunityTheater, Mystery By Design Dinner Theater, Mitty High School, Verba Buena HighSchool, and Opry House of Almaden.ln his spare time Tino produces and directs "ACelebration of Courage" for television for Timpany Center in San Jose, and isExecutive Producer for Personal Productions. Tino is Busy. His Motto ..... "Accidentscreate some of my best work." We are delighted to welcome him back to WVLO thistime in the Director's chair. We hope he will want to return as Director again in spiteof his busy schedule.

Fay Pettner, Music Director Fay makes her debut for WVLO withthis production, but is no newcomer to musical theater. In the pastten years, she has been very busy with productions through SouthValley Civic Theater, Old City Hall-Center Stage, Gilroy Under theStars, and several other Bay Area theaters. "NUNSENSE II"marks her twenty-seventh musical production. Active in manyways, she has enjoyed theater life working as show director, musi-cal director, orchestra conductor and performer. In her "spare"time, Fay is a piano and organ teacher, choral director, churchorganist, and manages to stay active by keeping step with her three young, veryactive, very musical grandsons. It is a great pleasure to have such a musical talent asFay willing to travel so far in order to be on our Staff. We hope she will return soon.

Nancy Kwong - Choreographer Nancy's talents are very famil-iar to our regulars for this will be her seventh WVLO terpsichoreandisplay; her most recent theatrical production was "Gypsy" last fall;but her "best" production to date has been her son, CameronAustin, born on Nov. 22, 1995. She started the first of her fiveperformances with us in 1980 in "Good News" and has beeneither performing or choreographing ever since. She has alsochoreographed for Gaslighter Theater in Campbell, SCP, &Theatreworks in Palo Alto. Nancy received her BA from CSU @

Chico and her Masters in Speech Pathology from SJSU and now uses that educationas a speech therapist at Mid-Peninsula Speech Clinic in Palo Alto. Even though she isbusy with her new baby, she still finds time to work, choreograph, volunteer forTimpany Center & work for the speech & hearing impaired through Quota Internationalof Sunnyvale. Her husband, Edmond, is a very proud Daddy and neither one can waituntil Cameron is ready to start tap dancing! Welcome back, Nancy!

His other film credits include designing & building setsas well as special effects for "Planet Of Dinosaurs", "Birdy", & "Demon hunter". Anyonewho has worked with Stephen marvels at his uncanny ability to create something fan-tastic out of practically nothing. He always deserves our highest praise! John J. Ladasky - Stage Manager This is the first production John has worked back-stage. Most of our regular theatergoers are used to seeing him ON our stage, not off-stage. He most recently appeared as Grandpa Prophater in "Meet Me In St. Louis", butbegan his theatrical credits in "Music Man" for which he won the Captain's Cape, thenappeared in "Oklahoma!" and "Singin' In The Rain". He says he owes his interest inmusic & theater to sons, John, Jr. and Michael (both excellent musicians) and his sup-porting roles to his wife, Donna, who has provided her costuming expertise for severalWVLO productions. He loves to go duck hunting when he isn't working at SunMicrosystems as an electrical engineer."Brother John" has been a miracle worker for this production, ensuring that all sound, light and physical effects are on cue. Welcome to the backstage crew!

The Center's highly trained, caring staff is dedicated to providing a multitude ofservices in a protective, safe and secure environment to children and adults withdisabilities and individuals who are rehabilitating from accident, injury, surgery orchronic pain.

It is Timpany Center's goal to provide a facility that supports every individual'sability and growth by having the opportunity to take care of their hearts and mindsas well as their bodies.

The bouyant properties of water allow a client to exercise while lessening theeffects of gravity. As a client exercises, the buoyancy helps support them whileat the same time the water provides a natural resistance to help strengthen weak-ened muscles. At 92 degrees, the warm water promotes relaxation to enhancethe effects of the exercises.

This production's Bingo proceeds will be donated to the Timpany Center to pro-vide funds for children & adults who could not otherwise afford aquatic physicaltherapy treatments. We thank you for your support of this worthy cause.

BUSINESS BONUSWhen you subscribe next season, you can double your contribution to WVLOA bytaking advantage of your company's matching gift program (even after retirement).Perhaps the most popular way for companies to make charitable contributions isthrough a matching contribution program wherein the company will match, usuallyone-to-one, the donation one of their employees gives to a favorite charity. Here inthe Bay Area, we are fortunate to have many companies that have initiated such aprogram. Remember, matching contributions are not automatic. You must notifyyour employer of your donation, usually at the time you make it. If you areemployed by one of these companies and are one of our supporters, take advan-tage of this wonderful way to support one of your favorite non-profit associations,WVLOA.
