The Reebok Pumps

• was made as a collaboration between Reebok and industrial design firm Design Continuum

• released in 1989 as a basketball high-top shoe.

• The shoe was extremely expensive compared to other retail athletic shoes at the time.

• It became a type of status symbol on urban basketball courts and eventually in suburban high schools

• After the success of the basketball shoe, Reebok designed pump shoes for football, tennis, and track

Rollerblades/ Inline Skates• During the late 1980s and early 1990s

the popularity of inline skates had a strong popularity

• led by the company Rollerblade, Inc• promoted and popularized inlines- its

skates became so successful that the term "Rollerblades" has become synonymous with "inline skates," and many people call any form of skating "Rollerblading"

Overalls and Denim Shorts

• Denim overalls regained popularity in 1992

• Denim overalls fit well with the grunge and neo-hippie fashions

• Denim overalls remained popular through 2000, being adapted to fit the changing styles.

• Denim shorts became fashionable in 1992.

• White denim became popular among girls in 1992, and remained popular through 1998.

Grunge and Neo-Hippie Fashion

• Grunge- Achieved mainstream along with music in 1992

• “Anti-fashion”• decline in the popularity of bright

colors• dominated by plaid flannel shirts,

stonewashed blue jeans, and dark colors like maroon, forest green, indigo, and brown.

• White and black were also popular colors in grunge fashion

• Grunge fashion popularized Doc Martens style shoes and boots, and high top sneakers in red, indigo, forest green, and black

• Although the grunge look was considered "anti-fashion", the fashion industry turned the grunge look into a distinct fashion style

• industry began selling such items as plaid hooded sweatshirts, plaid sweatshirt vests, plaid long sleeved t-shirts, and plaid shorts

• Hippie Fashion- began to reenter the fashion world in 1990 with the return of tie-dye shirts

• Followed in 1991 with the advent of sunglasses shaped like the granny glasses of the late 1960s.

• The full blown revival of hippie fashion began in 1992 with the return of bell-bottom jeans

• Crotched Vests also considered part of the hippie revival became popular among teenaged and pre-teen girls in 1993

• Most fashion critics considered the grunge and the neo-hippie looks complimentary

Seinfeld•Jerry Seinfeld portrayed himself as a young single comic in New York coping with dating, nutty friends, and the indignities of city life.

•A show about “Nothing”

•Jerry; Elaine, his ex-girlfriend and platonic pal; George, his worrywart best friend; and eccentric entrepreneur Kramer, the next-door neighbor who constantly wandered in and out of his apartment.

•Most stories were about life's trivia, waiting in line, forgetting where your car is parked, throwing away someone's prized TV Guide.

Pushing the Limits• Many shows in the early 1990’s

pushed the limits of what was seen as appropriate for television.

• South Park- violent language and content: cartoom

• Melrose Place, Party of 5, Beverly Hills 90210- sexual content and many former taboos that never previously been in television.

• Still cause many debates and protest but as we all know these shows are nothing compared to many shows today.
