CURRICULUM 1987- 1997Throughout the 1980s, approximately 50 percent of the department's undergraduate majors with a primary interest was teaching or extension education, were dual majors. The students completed requirements both for a major in agricultural education and in another department in the College of Agriculture. The new curriculum adopted in the College and implemented in 1990 eliminated dual majors. Field-based experiences were provided agricultural communication students in the latter part of the 1980s. They were placed in a variety of communication settings and were supervised by a designated person in a communication business or agency.
International ActivityIncreased interest among resident faculty for international activities resulted in the contribution by department faculty have contributed to the international capacity of the University and the College of Agriculture in particular. During the 1980s, Dr. Larry Miller served on the advisory committee of the University's Office of lnternational Affairs. Dr. Robert Agunga, the Department's first international-born faculty member, became active with the center for African Studies. Dr. David McCracken served as an adviser to the Thai and Malaysian students organizations on campus. Several faculty were also active in the creation and operation of the International Programs in Agriculture (IPA) office of the College of Agriculture during the 1980s. Miller chaired the selection committee for a director of IPA; and along with Dr. Lowell Hedges served on IPA's Uganda Liaison Committee, which developed guidelines for short term technical training. Several Department faculty assisted with the preparation of proposals for projects in Burma, Costa Rica, and others. .

The strong program of research was on of many factors that led the department to be recognized as the best department of Agricultural Education in the nation in 1987. The pictures above are taken at an event recognizing this accomplishment. Top retired faculty member Ralph Wooden and Joe Gliem; Kirby Barrick and Wes Budke; then department chair L. H. Newcomb
and long-time chair Ralph Bender. Middle: three chairs of the department: Warmbrod, Newcomb and Bender. Bottom James Knight and Ralph Woodin. Bottom Right: President Jennings.
A 1989 revision of the curriculum established a graduate education in agricultural communication for the first time. A program of study was approved leading to a Master of Science Degree. A new undergraduate curriculum went into effect Autumn Quarter
1990. Here students participate in the national conference for Agricultural Educators of Tomorrow (ACT) in 1990 (top) and 1992.
The department in 1995: Tucker, Clark, McCracken, Henderson, Newcomb, Barrick, Cooper, Cano, Agunga. FFA activities continue to play a large role in the training of students in Vocational Agriculture. Here FFA students learn tractor
maintenance and Tri-Valley FFA participates provides demonstration for elementary school students.
Graduate studies play a large role in this decade and for the first time the department graduates more graduate than undergraduate students. A total of 92 PhD students and 161 Master’s students earn their graduate degrees from our
department from 1987-1997. Above faculty member Janet Henderson (right) with a group of graduate students from this time.
The department celebrated its Diamond Anniversary in 1992 under the leadership of Dr.
