SHURE MoaaEcOIIIHUCAnoNSPRODUCU
When you specify Shure microphones, you can depend on their ruggedness, reliability and outstanding sound performance. Shure microphones have withstood wars, earthquakes, floods, fires, avalanches, sandstorms. Even though people in more than 150 countries around the world put our microphones to hard use every day - they leave them to bake in the hot sun, they drop them, step on them, yank the cable - Shure microphones are manufactured to such uncompromising standards that they perform optimally.
Every microphone Shure designs and builds is put through a rigorous battery of environmental and performance tests to ensure that it will function under the most extreme operating conditions. There are 37 demanding tests every design must pass before being put into production. Microphones are heated to 185°F, frozen down to -50°F, subjected to alternating extremes of heat and COld, exposed to steamy humidity, ultraviolet rays, salt spray, alcohol, sand and water, dropped repeatedly, shaken violently, and much more. And once a Shure microphone goes into production, units are continually chosen at random and put through the same tests to insure that Shure's legendary standards are maintained. If any microphone fails a critical test, production is halted until the problem is resolved and our quality control standards are again fully met.

Shure was the first microphone manufacturer to make full disclosure of each and every microphone's specifications. All Shure microphones are designed to meet tough military standards for physical and electrical characteristics as well as environmental operating conditions. At Shure, our commitment is to quality. That's why we are constantly improving our products. When you buy a handheld microphone with a Million-Cycle Plus 1M leaf switch, you're getting extras you can't see, but which greatly improve durability and performance. For example, all switch contacts are "alloyed" with expensive palladium, not just silver, to prevent tarnishing and rusting. Such attention to detail, today, is rare because it is costly. Yet, it is the only way to assure the quality of a finished product that is designed to perform optimally for many years to come, no matter how extreme the operating conditions.
Studio photography simulates four of 37 actual tests all Shure microphones are put through. Clockwise from top left. freezing down to - 50°F, moisture resistance test. exposure to fine blowing sand. and vibration test.

Just 30 seconds. That's all it takes to replace the ModuLink cordset. The modular plug snaps Quickly into the base of the ModuLink microphone (shown here), and the radio end of the cordset is pre-wired for fast connection to the radio.
ModuLink reduces inventory requirements. The two ModuLink microphones operate with almost any radio transceiver. And just a few different cordsets (see page 6) support over 40 different radio transceiver models.

The Million-Cycle Plus™ leaf switch is , I one more trademark of Shure's commitment to quality. All switch contacts are m?de of a silver and palladium alloy tal prevent tarnishing and fouling. The switch blaqes are made of spring-tempered nickel sliver so that they will bend but never break. And the blaDes are angled so that they wipe the contacts clean whenever the switch: is activated. Such attention to detail tooay is rare beoause it is cbstly. But at Shure, we insist on the best in order to achieve our high quality standards.

MOBILE COMMUNICATIONS PRODUaS
.. The method by which the microphone converts acoustical energy to electrical energy.
Dynamic: A coil of wire, fastened to a diaphragm, moves in a magnetic field in response to sound waves arriving at the diaphragm, thus inducing minute voltages in the coil which constitute the electrical output of the microphone.
Controlled Magnetic@: A diaphragm moves an iron armature which conducts a magnetic field through a stationary coil, generating an electrical signal.
Carbon: Tiny carbon granules are suspended between a conductive diaphragm and a conductive backplate in a cylindrical cavity. Sound waves striking the diaphragm compress the granules, varying their resistance to a current from a battery or external power source. This changing resistance modulates the current, resulting in an audio output voltage.
Condenser: A diaphragm moves to sound waves, varying the spacing between capacitor plates. This changes the capacitance and, through additional circuitry, generates minute voltage changes. The condenser microphone requires an impedance-converting preamplifier and external power source for operation.
• I
The relative output of the microphone versus frequency in the audio spectrum, specified in a range, such as 50 to 15,000 Hz (hertz).
The frequency response curve shown for each Shure communications microphone shows an accurate picture of the microphone's range and response. The curve represents the output voltage, expressed in dB (decibels) versus frequency in hertz.
The frequency response of a Shure communications microphone is carefully tailored to the voice-frequency spectrum to optimize articulation and reduce unwanted high and low frequency background noise.
• I I' • I
The relative sensitivity of a microphone to sounds arriving from different directions.
Omnidirectional: Little variation in output voltage as a sound source moves around the microphone.
Unidirectional: The microphone is least sensitive to sounds originating at its rear and has reduced sensitivity to sounds from its sides. The cardioid (heart-shaped) pattern is the most common form, which has a null at its rear and is half as sensitive to sounds from the sides as it is to sounds from the front. The supercardioid pattern is more directional, about 40% as sensitive to sounds from the sides and rear as to sounds from the front.
Bidirectional (figure eight): These microphones are equally sensitive to sounds originating from the front and rear, and least sensitive to sounds from the sides.
Noise-Canceling: This microphone is insensitive to sounds originating from its sides and discriminates against distant sounds in favor of sound sources near the microphone.

Microphone impedance is specified as a rating followed by the actual impedance in ohms. Common ratings are: 150 ohms (actual impedance may be from 75 to 300 ohms), 600 ohms (actual impedance from 300 to 1,200 ohms), 2,400 ohms (actual impedance from 1,200 to 4,800 ohms), and high-impedance (actual impedance greater than 10,000 ohms).
High-impedance microphones have a higher open-circuit output voltage than low-impedance microphones, but are more susceptible to hum and buzz pickup and high-frequency loss in their cables. They are generally limited to cable lengths under 20 feet.
Selecting the proper microphone impedance versus the input impedance of a transceiver or amplifier is done: (1) to maximize the microphone output Signal, (2) to preserve the full frequency response, and (3) to minimize pickup of unwanted signals. In general, for optimum performance, the actual equipment input impedance should be 5 to 10 times that of the microphone.
An expression of the voltage or power output for a given sound pressure.
Open Circuit Voltage: The open circuit voltage is an "unloaded" figure in that there is no voltage drop due to the measuring instrument. The output is specified in both volts and decibels (dB). Less sensitive microphones have larger negative decibel numbers and more sensitive microphones would have smaller negative numbers.
Power Level: The power level is specified with a matched load, for instance an actual 200-ohm microphone matched to an actual 200-ohm amplifier input impedance.
I·
Hum (60 Hz or its harmonics) from fluorescent lights, amplifiers, power cables and other electromagnetic sources can be picked up by a microphone voice coil, transformer, or by an ungrounded or unshielded case. A humbucking coil greatly reduces pickup of magnetic hum and careful attention to grounding and shielding in the design reduces hum pickup through the case.
Magnetic hum sensitivity is specified as equivalent dB SPL for a l-millioersted magnetic field. This means that if the microphone is immersed in a 1 mOe field, the hum output of the microphone will be the same level as that caused by an acoustic signal at the specified dB SPL intensity.
