"We are experiencing an increase in ourCD sales for 3 very simple reasons," saysDon Oates, Vice President Sales & Marketingfor CBS Records Canada. "First andforemost, we're getting full supply from ourU.S. plant, and we never had that last year.We were getting absolutely no fill last year. The second reason is that this is the first yearwhen all our accounts are buying compactdiscs. For instance, last year at this time,Handleman was not in the compact discbusiness - and they now stock CDs for theiraccounts like Towers, Zellers, K -Mart etc.So, there would be an incremental increasethere. The third reason is that because we dohave stock, we can now get into themarketing of compact discs for the very firsttime."

Oates went on to point out that CBScreated a CD merchandising display unit thatwas available to sit on the counter or in thewire frames and "A" frames in the stores. They also created p.o.p material. "So ob-viously CBS was more prominent at retail,"continues Oates, "with resultant sales onacross-the-board product - classical, pop, rock, and country - and I can see further in-creases down the road."

Pepsi Music Poll Sweeps feels pulse of consumer

Pepsi -Cola Canada revealed today (July 8) the names of what they describe as "the hot- test music stars -

according to the opinions of 150,000 Canadians," which is likely the largest consumer response to a music poll

ever conducted in North America. The Pepsi Music Poll Sweepstakes allow-

ed Canadians to vote for their favourite ar- tists in 6 categories. They were also given the

opportunity to win prizes in the sweepstakes aspect of the poll.

The winners were: Favourite Male Artist

COREY HART (24 percent of voters)

Favourite Female Artist MADONNA

(39 percent of voters) Favourite New Artist

WHITNEY HOUSTON (31 percent of voters)

Favourite Group DIRE STRAITS

(26 percent of voters) Favourite Album of all Time BORN IN THE USA Bruce Springsteen

(57 percent of voters) Favourite Country Performer

KENNY ROGERS (44 percent of voters)

Interesting enough Bryan Adams and Phil Collins tied for second place in the

Favourite Male Artist category with 20 per- cent of the vote. Tina Turner took second

place honours with 20 percent in the

Favourite Female Artist category, followed by Anne Murray with 12 percent.

Mr. Mister (23 percent), and Tears For Fears (16 percent) are the second and third

Favourite New Artists -

and the Beatles came second to Dire Straits in the Favourite Group

category with 21 percent, followed closely by ZZ Top with 20 percent.

The second and third Most Popular Albums of All Time, were Dark Side Of The

Moon (13 percent), and Thriller (11 percent). In the country field, Alabama (21 per-

cent) and Willie Nelson (14 percent) trailed Kenny Rogers as Favourite Country Per-

formers. Colin Moore, Director of Marketing for

Pepsi -Cola Canada, notes: "The Pepsi Music Poll Sweepstakes has given Pepsi -Cola

Canada tremendous insight into regional tastes and trends with regard to the Canadian music scene. For example the poll shows that

Dire Straits are the Favourite Group in Eastern Canada with 35 percent of the popular vote, while The Beatles were No. 1 in Ontario with 23 percent."

Grand prize winners were announced across Canada this week in draws conducted

by more than 60 participating radio stations. Each Grand Prize winner won, among other

items, a collection of 100 personally -selected CBS albums.

Moore concludes with "A consumer - driven program like the Pepsi Music Poll

Sweepstakes keeps us on top of the choices of the new generation, and reinforces our con-

temporary image."

How about a critique on critics??Knowing how thin-skinned entertainmentcritics are . . . wouldn't it be interesting to doa critique on a critique by a critic . . . once ortwice a month? In a year's time we wouldhave enough critiques to even make anaward. How about The Uranus Award, nam-ed after that infamous planet?? Every majorcity has a daily or two, and entertainmentcritics who indulge in "destructive criticism". . . and, outside of a few complaints to Let-ters To The Editor, they just twiddle on andon without showing any conscience. Well . . .

we could be their conscience. . . couldn't we?I happen to have a few favourites - in Van-couver, Edmonton, Montreal and a 'couple ofready-made Uranus nominees in Toronto. Ofcourse, we would have to have a judgespanel, and they would obviously be made upof record people.

be more welcome than the return of a fewrecognizable faces. Have you noticed lately, how many people in the industry today leaveno impression. Attending receptions thesedays I'm often faced with a room full offaces with no names (EC: Sounds like a goodsong title!!)

It always starts on the West Coast!Have you noticed that whenever anything ofan explosive nature happens in the recordingindustry, it originates from the West Coast. The first, meaningful assault of the Canadiancharts by Canadian recording acts was a WestCoast happening, which evolved from theMoffat chain's push on local talent. Themove eastward was gradual, but it finallysteamrolled into the Toronto area, and "starswere born." Then we had the Tears Are NotEnough phenomenon, which did more to br-ing this country together musically than 10years of legislated radio. Most recently wehave West Coast artists donating, anddonating heavily to worthy causes. At your age . . . ??When my car broke down on a side street inToronto recently, I got phone calls aboutwhat was I doing in that neighborhood, over-night. Most recent report was that I was seenon a Honda dirt bike at Davisville and YongeStreets. Well . . . it was me . . . and at theother end of the phone, someone said "atyour age?" Thanks a lot. There's anotherguy, much bigger than me, and he has a dirtbike, and he's only a couple of years youngerthan me!! What's age relative to anyway??

Have the limos wait!!!Do you remember the days when Canadiangroups had all those limos lined up waitingfor them while they were being wined anddined for hours and hours. I hear that someof those same people are lining up for govern-ment handouts to do their next session - andone of the companies that allowed these ex-cesses is in real trouble. Cranwell and Freeman to PolyGram promotion

Bob Ansell, Vice President Promotion &

Media Relations for PolyGram, has an- nounced 2 new additions to the company's

promotion department. Steve Cranwell has been appointed to the

regional promotion position in Calgary where he will be directly responsible for the pro-

vinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan. He has been with WEA Promotion for the past 2

years, and "with his previous retail ex- perience will be a valuable asset to

Markets still available for CASBY syndication

David Marsden, Director of Operations and Programming for CFNY-FM Toronto,

reports there are still markets available for the syndication of this year's CASBY awards.

The show is a joint production of CFNY-FM and CBC TV Toronto, and will be televised

across the country by participating television stations on Aug. 15.

Those stations that have been guaranteed exclusivity of the broadcast are

VOCM St. John's, Q104 Dartmouth, CHOM-FM Montreal, CHEZ-FM Ottawa, CFNY-FM Toronto, CITI-FM Winnipeg, CIZL-FM Regina, CFMC Saskatoon, CKIK-

FM Calgary, K-97 Edmonton, and C -FOX -

FM Vancouver. Stations wishing to take part in this syn-

dication, and whose markets would not in- terfere with the above stations, can contact

Jim Fonger in Toronto at 416-960-0870.

PolyGram" says Ansell David Freeman joins the national pro-

motion staff, moving from CHRW (Universi- ty of Western Ontario, London) where he has

been Station Manager/Program Director since May of 1982. "David has clearly been a

major factor in `RW's status as one of the country's top alternative outlets," says

Ansell, concluding with "Both Steve and David can only intensify PolyGram's conti- nuing ability to do what we do best

- break

records."

Loverboy's Top Gun cut without Johnson When Loverboy entered the studio earlier this

year to record Heaven In Your Eyes for the

Top Gun soundtrack, absent was keyboardist Doug Johnson - due to what has been

described as his strong belief regarding the "promotion of the American military."

Johnson has also waived all financial renumeration that would have come to him

from airplay and sales of the song. He had also refused to play the song live until recent-

ly. Apparently, after several meetings,

Johnson consented to play the song dur- ing the band's forthcoming summer tour.

"I'm sure there are fans of ours who love the

song for its own merits," suggests Johnson, "and it would be unfair of me to deny them

the pleasure of hearing it."

COVER STORY

The Cure endure a decade of persHaving finally come into prominence inNorth America after a decade ofperserverance - and a no -compromise attitude- The Cure's latest release (Standing On ABeach) is a reflection of their past, detailingtheir musical history from Killing An Arab,to Close To Me. However, it is no coin-cidence that this past year has been their mostsuccessful - it was in late 1984 when they weresigned to the Elektra label - and foundingmember Laurence Tolhurst agrees.

"Yes, it's the 4th or 5th label we've beenon in North America," he explains, "and forinstance, when we came over here last time(1985), there was always somebody fromElektra at every concert. So, there's a bitmore concern, something we felt was lackingwith the other labels, where it was like 'collectanother English group'."

The past year has seen 3 releases fromThe Cure: Head On The Door, Quadpus, andStanding On A Beach. The latter a compila-tion, a greatest hits package, and this suggestsTolhurst, was the band's idea. "It was prac-tical," he explains. "We had 13 singles, which is about the maximum you can get on arecord, so we thought we'd use it as a summa-tion of the past few years." But not as ameans of breaking in North America? "No,we don't really care. But we'd be liars if wesaid we didn't want success."

With respect to record sales, thedrummer-turned-keyboardist offers:"They're not relevent after a certain pointbecause there is always a section of peoplewho will always buy the top albums irrespec-tive of whether they know anything about theband or whether they actually like themusic."

Accompanying the Standing On TheBeach release is a video compilation, titledStaring At The Sea. Says Tolhurst: "A lot ofpeople unfortunately, use videos as a sort ofmarketing ploy rather than what could bedone with them - which is the same as makinga record - and making a record that's in-teresting.

"I think it's a grossly undervalued form, and too many take it the wrong way - takingit purely to titillate. I've grown tired of

Island set to releaseHine's Thinkman projectIsland Records has slated the release ofRupert Hine's new album, The Formula forJuly 29. Accompanying this release is a 12"AOR single containing the first 2 cuts: BestAdventures, and the title track.

"It'll be our chase project for the sum-mer," says new Island President Lee Silver -sides. "We'll build a foundation at AORfirst, then we'll use that base as a springboardfor CHR - the tunes are relevent to both for-mats."

COVER STORY

The Cure endure a decade

Having finally come into prominence in North America after a decade of

perserverance - and a no -compromise attitude -

The Cure's latest release (Standing On A Beach) is a reflection of their past, detailing

their musical history from Killing An Arab, to Close To Me. However, it is no coin-

cidence that this past year has been their most successful -

it was in late 1984 when they were signed to the Elektra label

- and founding

member Laurence Tolhurst agrees. "Yes

, it's the 4th or 5th label we've been

on in North America," he explains, "and for instance, when we came over here last time

(1985), there was always somebody from Elektra at every concert. So, there's a bit

more concern, something we felt was lacking with the other labels, where it was like 'collect

another English group'." The past year has seen 3 releases from

The Cure: Head On The Door, Quadpus, and Standing On A Beach. The latter a compila-

tion, a greatest hits package, and this suggests Tolhurst, was the band's idea. "It was prac-

tical," he explains. "We had 13 singles, which is about the maximum you can get on a

record, so we thought we'd use it as a summa- tion of the past few years." But not as a

means of breaking in North America? "No, we don't really care. But we'd be liars if we

said we didn't want success." With respect to record sales, the

drummer-turned-keyboardist offers: "They're not relevent after a certain point

because there is always a section of people who will always buy the top albums irrespec- tive of whether they know anything about the

band or whether they actually like the music."

Accompanying the Standing On The Beach release is a video compilation, titled

Staring At The Sea. Says Tolhurst: "A lot of people unfortunately, use videos as a sort of

marketing ploy rather than what could be done with them

- which is the same as making

a record -

and making a record that's in- teresting.

"I think it's a grossly undervalued form, and too many take it the wrong way -

taking it purely to titillate. -I've grown tired of

Island set to release Hine's Thinkman project

Island Records has slated the release of Rupert Hine's new album, The Formula for

July 29. Accompanying this release is a 12" AOR single containing the first 2 cuts: Best

Adventures, and the title track. "It'll be our chase project for the sum-

mer," says new Island President Lee Silver -

sides. "We'll build a foundation at AOR first, then we'll use that base as a springboard

for CHR - the tunes are relevent to both for- mats."

Hine's new band, Thinkman, includes members Andy Paris, Leo Hurll, and Joe

McArthur. Silversides reveals that Police drummer Stewart Copeland assists on several

tracks on the album, and Lisa DalBello pro- vides backing vocals.

of perserverance videos with just 3 ideas: the blond walking down the road with a singer, with lasers com-

ing out his eyes, and people evaporating." Tolhurst points out that although

Elektra has tried to pressure the group to commercialize, "every record company tries

that - that's why we've changed so many labels." He adds however, that Elektra is the

only company to "understand" the group. "Albeit, they must think we're a bit like

autistic children or something. They know there's something there, but they're not quite

sure how to bring it out. Yes, but every com- pany tries to get you to commercialize. I

mean, that's what they're there for. They're not charitable institutions

. . . they're banks

really." Tolhurst and The Cure: vocalist Robert

Smith, bassist Simon Gallop, drummer Boris

Williams, and keyboardist Porl Thompson, have drawn the line between making records and selling records.

"Sure, it would be foolish if we said, 'we'd like it marketed this way', when we don't really know what induces people to buy

a record anyway. On the other hand, I don't understand when I'm told 'well, people won't

like that, and it won't sell,' I don't see how anybody can tell that at all."

Despite the label changes throughout their volatile career, Tolhurst maintains the

group hasn't lost their integrity nor their idealism. "When we first started, we didn't

expect a large advance from any label because we figured we'd be paying them back each

successive year. Because, for each album or each tour you do, you just end up spending more money - and if you don't recover it, like with huge sales, then you're at the beck and call of everybody who thinks they know how

to run you. 'When we started, we just said 'well,

Hot summer months ahead by Debbie Wood

Director Promotion & Publicity Savannah Records

The month of July marks the official launch of Savannah Records' new distribution

agreement with RCA/Ariola. So, to

heat things up right from the start, we're

coming with a blistering release

schedule, our busiest ever, including 3 hot new albums and 5

scorching singles. No siestas this sum-

mer for the staff (me) here at Savan- nah! First off the

presses comes Gary Fjellgaard's Savannah debut, No Time To lose: a much -anticipated

release, and the first LP in over 3 years from - British Columbia's highest -profile, most

awarded country singer/songwriter. Crafted at Vancouver's Little Mountain Sound, with

the help of some of the West Coast's top musicians (including Jim Valiance on drums),

No Time To Lose, Gary's fourth album, is his strongest product yet. Key cuts include the

award -winning single, Riding On The Wind (Canadian Country Music Association's 1985

Single of The Year; CARAS' 1985 Tribute To West Coast Music Independent Song of The

Year), and Dancing In The Ring, Gary's chart -climbing current single, now on over

100 stations nationally. Next up, we've got another Savannah debut, this time from The Good Brothers.

Delivering The Goods is the first album release in more than 2 and a half years from

Canada's top country rock group. The Goods have released 8 albums in Canada during the past 12 years, winning a gold record and a str- ing of 8 Junos in the process. Through their

new association with Savannah Records, Delivering The Goods reunites the Brothers

with their friends at RCA and continues the tradition established by their previous

Debbie Wood

for Savannah acts

outings: Brian's ballads and Bruce's up - against -the wall rockers combined with Larry's bluegrass influences, all together in

one strong, well -produced "Good" -time package suitable for a variety of radio for-

mats. Their first single from the LP, This Could Be Serious, hits programmers' desks

this week. Last (but not least) we have the new LP

from Terry Carisse slated for late July. None Of The Feeling Is Gone continues the rapid

development of Terry's career that began with his last LP, The Closest Thing To You. That album helped Terry win 7 Canadian

Country Music Awards in 1985 (including Album of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year), plus a PROCAN Citation for the title track single being most performed Canadian

country composition during 1984, and a Big Country Award for Terry and his songwriting partner, Bruce Rawlins, as Canada's Top Country Composers in 1985. But we think Terry's new product is even stronger. None

Of The Feeling Is Gone features hotter pro- duction values and a smoother crossover - oriented sound with saxophones and

keyboards, much to the delight of country and A/C programmers alike: Love Sweet

Love, the leadoff single released just 2 weeks ago, is Terry's fastest -breaking single ever.

And the heat goes on. We're tallying a -

torrid radio reaction to Anita Perras' debu, single for the label, Heads You Win (Tails Lose): this solo offering from one half of

Canada's 1985 CCMA Duo of the Year (Anita Perras & Tim Taylor) has won

widespread recognition as her best individual outing to date. We're ablaze with enthusiasm

for our newest signing, Sudbury's Michelle Wright. Her first single, I Want To Count On

You; ships Friday. All our artists are current- ly smokin' across Canada in the midst of

their summer tours, and we've got new 45s from Matt Minglewood and Terry Sumsion

on the front burner for August. All in all, it's shaping up to be a steamin' summer for Savannah.

charts 2nd single, All I Need Is A Miracle, has just

slipped out of the Top 10.

Finally, having reached the diamond sales plateau last month, Phil Collins' solo LP, No Jacket Required, continues to display

tremendous depth and tenacity -

having just slipped from the Top 20 after 71 weeks of

chart action, but continues to sell strongly.

Interestingly, according to WEA Vice President Sales, Garry Newman, shipments

of these 4 titles constitute over 30 percent of total weekly sales, "and yes," he adds, "they

are competing with each other."

Eye Eye to release Oates' X -Ray Eyes Toronto -based Duke Street recording act,

Eye Eye, currently on release with Just In Time To Be Late, have slated the second single from their debut effort, a John Oates

penning titled X -Ray Eyes. The release is set for early August.

The band recently opened Glass Tiger's 3 -day SRO stint at Ontario Place and for

their final appearance were introduced from the stage by John Oates, of Hall And Oates

John Oates dropped by the Forum of Ontario Place to introduce Eye Eye to the

audience (I to r) Reid Bailey (PR.E.S.Mgt), Mark Caporal, Andy Ryan, Oates, Bill

Wood, Joel McCloud, Doug Ruston, and John Graham (PR.E.S. Mgt).

fame. Founding members Bill Wood (lead

vocals) and Andy Ryan (guitars) were ecstatic over the introduction. "It was definitely the

biggest night of my career," relates Wood, "and he (Oates) put the kids in even a better

mood," adds Ryan. The band, who are now a quintet with

the new addition of keyboardist Joel Mc- Cloud, capped that performance with a rous-

ing rendition of their hit single, Out On A Limb, to a standing ovation. The crowd

numbered in excess of 10,000 concert -goers. "We had asked John (Oates) to produce

our album after we got our deal with Duke Street" recalls Ryan, explaining how the

band was able to record the Oates song. "John is a friend of our manager's and

although he was too busy with other projects, he did have X -Ray Eyes,"continues Ryan.

"He liked our stuff, and he thought the song might fit with what we were doing. So, he

sent it up and we recorded it." Ryan and Wood were also formerly with

the OH NOS before forming Eye Eye. Both bands won the Toronto Q107 Homegrown

Contest in 1980 and 1984 respectively. Doug Ruston (bass), and Mark Caporal (drums)

comprise the remainder of the group.

EURYTHMICSRevenge - RCA AJL1-5647-NThe Tourists have come a long way. This albumis a delight: a blend of one of rock's mostpowerful vocalists with one of the best pro-ducers. The synthesis couldn't be more suitablymatched, and Jimmy 'Z' Zavala, who is foundthroughout on either sax or harmonica, is

exceptional. There is no reason all trackscan't be released as singles. Recorded atConny's Studio in Cologne and Studio GrandArmee in Paris.

RPM Country 60, where this week it was

necessary to drop several Cancon singles. We

were however, able to add Gary Fjellgaard's Dancing In The Ring, It's A Fine Line by

Gilles Godard, and Albert Hall's Blue Um- brella,

Weird nod to Foreman deck Hot from the world of Expo comes Deep In The Heart Of Vancouver, a 4 -song 12" ex-

tended play by Al Foreman. The release got more than a foot in the door when Weird

Harold of CKWX gave it the nod. Says Weird, "Deep In The Heart Of Vancouver is

loaded with all the very key ingredients I feel

are necessary in the make-up of a hit record." The single is released on the Vancouver -based

Munchkin label.

The Lords back in studios Anne and Roger Lord returned to Van-

couver's Little Mountain Sound to tape their next single, I'll Never Get Over You. The

single will be the follow-up to their current Comstock release, Don't Cry For Me, which

gained good country programmer attention and enjoyed several weeks on the RPM

Country 60. Both singles were produced by Peter Berring, and co -written by Anne and

Roger. They now have 5 tracks in the can and will be working toward the release of an

album in the not too distant future.

Justin Curtis off with single New from Calgary and the Boomtown label

comes Tell Me Why, a single by Justin Curtis. Both the plug side and the flip, Reality

Shakes, were written by Curtis. The single

was produced by Eric Westbury at The Sun- dae Sound Studio. Besides vocals, Curtis

Aggressive self -promo for Washbrook release

Markham, Ont. singer/songwriter Rick Washbrook is on release with his fist- single,

Little Bit, culled from his 13 -song Summer Roads cassalbum (cassette/album).

Washbrook canvassed major and small independent labels, producers and known

recording acts, and was encouraged by several quotable quotes.

Citing fine production and craftsman- ship, WEA A&R Director Bob Roper says,

"This single should find national acceptance at most MOR, pop and country stations."

Noted songwriter/guitarist Domenic Troiano wrote: "Rick Washbrook has done a

great job writing and producing his debut album. I love Litle Bit. The vocal sounds great."

Washbrook wrote, arranged and pro- duced Little Bit, as well as the 12 other selec- tions. The tracks were recorded at Toronto's

Twentieth Century Kid Studios, and were mixed by Dee Long at the E.S.P. facilities.

Session people included keyboardist Bill King, bassist Dan Colomby and Al Brisco on pedal steel. Playing the hi hat on Little Bit

was Tony Azzapardi. While laquering his single Washbrook

was introduced to John Oates (Hall & Oates) who says of Washbrook's talent: "A new

voice that's easy on the ears . . .

and a pro- mising songwriter."

ing vastly commercial -

I just think that's common sense."
