THE SHIFTING LANDSCAPE OF HEALTHCARE We are living in changing times. Breaking from tradition, more and more people are taking on the responsibility of well-being into their own hands. Like spirituality, it's becoming a personal matter. As this trend continues, the bulk of healthcare will evolve more into a form of learning endeavor with an engaging coach, rather than an impersonal brick and mortar hospital with imposing machinery or invasive pharmaceuticals ready to begin combat with a body that is perceived as running amok!

In reality our bodies are more like a well tuned assembly of elementary particles that is a hologram, than a hiding ground where enemies lurk to assault and ambush you! The field of alternative medicine is filled more with intuitive quantum biology practitioners – with a deep awareness of the finely tuned holographic cosmos wanting to partner with you – than individuals who outwit or outsmart or manipulate you.

Like any field, however, when money is involved, it will attract dubious business practices too. So a heightened level of tasteful discrimination and fine judgment is called for! Championing your body – and care of soul – cannot be delegated indiscriminately.

USING THE MIND AND SPIRIT TO HEAL: RECENT ADVANCES

Figure shows a 48-year-old man with elevated catecholamines and metanephrines with uncontrolled hypertension. The patient was evaluated with an MIBG scan that showed increased uptake in his known left para-aortic extra-adrenal paraganglioma as well as another questionable site of second focus of disease. (MIBG, iodine-131-meta-iodobenzylguanidine, injected into a vein, attaches to specific tumor cells)

The work-up was followed by 18F-FDG PET/CT, which showed hypermetabolic activity within the known paraganglioma as well as 2 additional foci that were lower in the abdomen, consistent with meta-static paragangliomas. In this case, 18F-FDG PET/CT was shown to be more accurate in detecting this patient’s metastatic paraganglioma sites.

Subsequent work up with 18F-FDG PET/CT showed a lack of hypermetabolic activity allowing classification as benign incidentaloma, requiring no further invasive procedures.

Figure shows a patient with an indeterminate left adrenal mass found on chest CT.

Patient who had both esophageal adenocarcinoma and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Unlike esophageal cancer, CLL has a low metabolic rate and therefore no increased uptake of FDG. The treatment field could therefore be adjusted to spare the adenopathy in the abdomen and the subsequent toxicity, particularly to the radiation-sensitive bowel.

Figure shows a comparison between conventional photon beam Radiation Therapy on the left and Proton Therapy on the right for a relapsing nasopharyngeal tumor.Whereas photons have no charge, protons do, so they interact heavily depositing energy in a localized region through collision (Bragg peak)The goal of radiation therapy is to deliver maximum dose to the tumor volume while protecting with little or no dose to the normal tissue. If the dose to the normal tissue goes up however, so does the rate of deleterious side effects and complications.

Figure shows a comparison between Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy on the left and Proton Therapy on the right for prostate cancer. The goal of radiation therapy is to deliver maximum dose to the tumor volume and little or no dose to the normal tissue. As the dose to the normal tissue goes up, so does the rate of complications.

It has been recognized for some time that fluctuation of an electromagnetic field gives rise to an associated quantum, a photon, a particle of light. Likewise, fluctuation of the field of Reflection gives rise to a quantum of the field of Reflection. The associated quantum, when noticed, is in the category of an “aha!” experience or a thought or just “noticing” something. A field theorist (someone who studies the nature of fields) might say that a fluctuation in the “field of Reflection” results in the “emission” of a “quantum of thought.” If you are not familiar with this concept, know that you are endowed with it. We invite you to become acquainted with it by finding opportunities to reflect upon it!
