Table I. Excerpt from the studbook of the Brown hyaena Hyaena brunnea showing disposition of individuals living in captivity on I January 1978
Studbook registration of captive specimens of the Brown hyaena Hyaena btunnea is virtually complete barring one or two institutions (includ- ing Okahandja, Namibia) which have not yet responded. The foregoing register summarises all known individuals living in captivity, either in zoos, in safari parks or in dealer ownership, on I January 1978. No hybridisation with other hyaena species has taken place, but overall breeding in recent years has been poor; some of the factors contributing to this situation have
been described (Shoemaker, 1978). Anyone requiring further information, or wishing to submit additional data, is invited to contact the Studbook Keeper at the above address.
