A Note from the Autumn-hue Hills of Sussex County

Might sound like we've been giving you a weather report of the area in our bi-monthly salutations this past year, but we'd like to think that as the seasons change, so does our s/d view - from beginner classes to mid- season parties to graduations & on to summer dances, workshops, picnics & vacations, & in our year as part of the cog of this changing wheel, we've covered thousands of miles thoroughly enjoying all these activities, & we'd like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank YOU - from the Nom- inating Committee to the Delegates & each Dancer - for the vote of confi- dence you've given us. We hope to make the coming season a banner year for each of the 4000+ dancers in our NNJSDA, & assure you if your present Exec Board can do anything to help you promote the fun & fellowship we've found in s/d, we're at your service.

You know as Fall leaves blend to form a colorful season so should our s/d picture blend with our every day living to form a happy, colorful couple sharing an activity at a pace that affords fun & relaxation, & one of the best ways to feel the colorful blend is to dress accordingly. These's nothing more contagious than a room full of smiling faces in col- orful shirts & swirling skirts to make even a novice on-looker aware of the comradery we share, & we'd like to remind you not to lower the barrier of correct s/d attire for a number of reasons - nonetheless of which is the sheer fun of feeling the part - it's great!

Now that the season is starting let's get our students started in the right direction for proper s/d dress by encouraging them to attend class in regular skirts or dresses & long-sieved shirts, & even if we have an- other energy crisis (Heaven forbid), help them understand that there is not a gni around whn r'^uldn't walk outdoors in a skirt. to get help if a car emergency arose, so we should all be able to get through a 2-hr. in- door class or dance without wearing slacks. It's important for all seas- oned dancers to set a good example, & the sparkiness we mentioned above really is contagious when the dancers are all dressed like dancers, so let's work together to maintain the good reputation our NNJSDA has by keeping good standards, & if incorrect attire is creeping into your area & you'd like to stop it before it becomes a real problem, you might con- sider, as one club is doing, a tactful note at the bottom of your flyers or calendars so there's no doubt about your club's policy, & remember, if each of us takes just a minute to think of how we look before we go out, we can set that good example.

Another good example would be for us to review the "10 Commandments" one at a time & see where we can improve our s/d manners - especially the last one which reminds us that we were all at one time or another, be- ginners - eager to learn & participate. What can we do to spark the un- derstanding that someone once had for us? Do you pick up the phone & encourage someone to meet you at the dance, or offer to pick them up so you can share the car & the fun enroute? Do you really mingle with mem- bers & guests alike? Do you ever think about calling dropouts on a Club roster & actually doing something positive about encouraging them to come back? Do you have, tapes to share for home workshops? S/D is as much fun as you make it; it's as many hours as you can participate, but ncone should criticize or judge another bwaluse he cannot give in the same measure you can. Our personal experience has been the more we've put into it, the more we've derived from it, but we learned s/d at a time in our life when we can participate (more than some of our friends, & not near as often as others) but we enjoy & value the many friendships we've made & we encourage you to help someone you know 'cast off' that shy feeling this season, & see what a good feeling you'll get!

Another thought: all the good times we have a s/d is because 'many hands make light work' & we'd like to suggest you come forth to help your Club with whatever talent you possess. (continued on page b )

Y SQUARES -- Scotch Plains, N.J. 1 & 3 Fridays Union Co. Tech. School, 1776 Raritan Road

Welcome to another year of square dancing. We hope everyone had a pleasant summer. Our summer dances were very successful and enjoyable to all who attended with Bob Kellogg calling the squares and Bob & Jean on the rounds. They will be with us again for the coming dance season.

No wonder presidents are so hard to find! Y Squares has spent a very hectic summer trying to confirm our dance location - finally learning at the very last minute we did not have to move! Such is life! We would like to say good luck to our new exec board with Pres. Frank & Nan Haber- sberger, 1st VP Dick & Joyce Smyth, 2nd VP Rip & Ruth Ley, Sec Charlie & Jackie Greenfield, Treas. Bob & Anita Schuhmacher and Delegates Ruth & Bill Kulp. Our second dance in September is an open house to introduce non-dancers to the wonderful world of square dancing. Our dances on Nov. 8 and Dec. 27 will be held at Kean College in Newark State. Maps and di- rections will be provided later. Our special dance this year will be in January with John Hendron calling. See our ad on page Of.

WARREN WHEELERS -- Broadway, N.J. 2 & 4 Thursdays Warren Grange Hall, Asbury lLoad

Many of our members were busy this summer, dancing on their vacations with clubs scattered all over the United States. Some of us gave spirited exhibitions at the Hackettstown Mall, the Finesville Playground, and at the Warren County Fair. We hope we generated a lot of interest in Western Square Dancing.

Our new dancing season started with our introductory dance and many friends and prospective class members were there. Classes will be held on Mondays. We will be dancing to Wilson Hoff this fall, as usual, for the square dancing and we are delighted to have Lynn & Bob Long calling our rounds. Our new officers and members are all looking forward to a fun season. Watch for our flyers and ads.

Please notice - WE have MOVED. Our new home is the Warren Grange Hall in Broadway, NJ. Easy to find - Broadway is on Route 57. just 4i miles west of Washington. Make the turn beside the Broadway Post Office on to the Asbury Road. The Grange Hall is less than a mile on the Asbury Road. on the left. It's a great place to dance - come and square up with us.

A club cannot exist without cooperation from its members, & rather than always letting someone else do it, pitch in wherever & whenever asked, & if you see something needs doing, don't wait to be asked - volunteer.

It might seem to old-timers that time & time again we go over & over dress code, dropouts, manners, etc., but sometimes when we see it in print we are reminded that all these facets are part of what makes s/d shine, & if we each take a special interest in the total picture, s/d will not only shine in our NNJSDA but will sparkle to the fullest!

We hope this season you will venture at least one new experience you can share with another couple, & in that way you will reap s/d's great-est reward T friendship ! How about our 1st Annual Mini Festival on SUNDAY, DECEMBER 1.....Four excellent callers, separate round dance room, delicious full-course dinner, s/d shops & more topnotch dancing from 1 to 11 p.m.... "try it, you'll like it", we're sure! See you there!

Many of you know FRAN & STEVE STEPHENS, the originators of C.R.O.W.D., having written to them for information abouts clubs elsewhere. Did you know they were honored by Bob Osgood representing the SIO American S/D Society with the Silver Spur award at the recent Convention? It couldn't have been given to a more wonderful, or more deserving couple. Congratulations FRAN & STEVE.

Rest assured, CROWD is still in good hands, having been turned over to Mary & Syl Leibowitz

FOLLOW UPI Remember last year the NNJSL sponsored a Caller's

Class with Jules, Hal, Art & Betsy teaching. There was another out Stillwater way, and several folks attended caller's college.

Of the 22 who graduated, 16 we know are active in either teaching classes or in club work. Good luck to you all. Ours is certainly a growing move- ment. One word of caution tho if a group thinks there is a need for a club in their area, do a little serious research before selecting a night. Avoid starting a new group on an evening when an Association club is al- ready meeting. When in doubt consult the NNJSDA Roster and section 2 of the By-Laws, especially "c". Should your club need a substitute, the list of these graduates was in the Holiday Issue 1973— p. 20.

Many area dancers, and caller too, have long been upset over the abundance of experimental and/ or new calls. The oft repeated solution was "select a'call.of-the-month', similar to the RiD Council's ROM". Lacking a Callers Association to work with, the

Education Committee of the NNJSDA was asked to attempt a meeting of all interested area sid call- ers to see what could be done. This had been done successfully when the Association did its first Basic S/D Manual, but such was not to be the ease.

Other areas and callers were just as disturbed and able to do some- thing with the result that CALLERLAB 74 was held last April with 120 National callers (a number from our area) participating. Only 3 major issues - decided upon by the delegates prior to the convention - were to be discussed .How We Dance; Accreditation; and New Movements.

CALLERLAB Resolution 3 on New Movements - encourage in every way possible development of definitions of dancing levels or plateaus as a basis for clubs to identify their program. CALLERLAB established a com- mittee of experienced club callers that met regularly to select from pro- posed workshop material no more than 2 workshop terms for each quarter. These terms shall be those considered most likely to gain general accep. tance over time. Carrying it one step further, CALLERLAB encourages all callers to refrain from calling or work shopping any "non-mainstream" terms except those selected as the quarterly workshop terms.at a dance event unless that dance is designated a workshop or an advanced plateau event.

At a recent NNJSDA Executive Board meeting, the decision was made to encourage all Association callers to follow CALLERLAB recommendations, and will forward to all area callers, copies of CkLLERLAB's decision, as well as publishing it in GRAND SQUARE for all to read. We invite your comments and will pass them along. The success of Resolution 3 (New MOVEMENTS) is up to all of us. Yes, folks are trying, • •• • • •will you?

Jack Lasry, along with a CALLERLAB Committee of 20 members from all over North America, has announced their choices for the last quarter of 1974. Here they are....

NOTE: Any figure not currently in the Basic 75 list is considered ex-perimental until such time as the next possible revision meeting next March.

WALK AND DODGE— From any four hand or two hand ocean wave, the dan-cers facing in will walk forward taking the place of the dancer directly across the set. The dancer facing out will slide or step into the vacated spot of the adjacent dancer.

EXAMPLES: Heads curtique Heads walk and dodge Swing thru, turn thru Left allemande

Heads square thru four Swing thru, cast off %, balance Walk and dodge, California twirl Star thru, dive thru, square thru % Left allemande

RECYCLE— The figure starts in an ocean wave and the end result is that the dancers have done a right and left thru and two ladies chain, so you can see the wave is back to a facing box and the two boys have exchanged places. The action of the figure is as follows: From the basic wave, the cen-ters (girls) .fold behind the end boys adjacent to them and as the ends (boys) cross fold the girls follow and end back in their original starting spot.

EXAMPLES: Heads square thru four Do-sa-do to a wave Recycle, right and left thru Two ladies chain, left allemande

Heads square thru four Do-sa-do to a wave Girls trade, recycle Dive thru, square thru % Left allemande

TENAKILL TWIRLERS Cresskill, N.J. 3 Friday Bryan -School; Brookside Avenue

We hope you all had a fine summer with plenty of fun and relaxation and a little dancing on the cooler days. Comes fall we expect to see you ready for another season of fun and sociability in Cresskill. Chip Hen-drickson will be back calling at 8:30 and those inimitable Tirrells will be teaching the ROM at eight. Between tips, if you can tear yourself a-way from all those friendly chats, the Tirrells will cue the rounds and the Brombergs will put on a series of folk dances for the increasing number who know how.

Gwen & Fred Manning and Pat Robinson stopped by to visit the Pullmans on their way home to England from the Overseas Dancers Reunion. There being no dancing scheduled, the Tirrell Twirlers riders graciously turned their dance over to the Pullmans who hosted a gala Anglo-American party in their honor. r orters - Dorothy & Paul Pullman 201-568-5138

The square dancing world is poorer because of the deaths of four of its members in the late spring and early summer

Bill Waltermire had been dancing just a year. Bill & Jean had grad-uated with the Hill City Class of '73. They were members of both Hill City and Y Squares.

Kay Konkle started dancing in the late 60's. Kay & Alex were active members of Hill City. They are past presidents as well as Lesson Chair-men for the 1970 class.

Lloyd Moren had been dancing about twenty years. Lloyd & Ruth started dancing with the Raritan Reelers in the early 50's. They were still dan-cing with them when the club changed its name to the Plainfield Promen-aders. They held various positions in the club, served a Treasurers and are past presidents. They were members of Somerset Hills and Hill City, but over the years they danced with and belonged to many 'clubs in the Association which they also served as delegates.

Lois Mayo had been dancing about ten years. Lois & Dick were members of Hill City and danced with most of the clubs in the area. Lois came

1 from a square dancing family. Her parents are Grace & Lou Holman of Somerset Hills.

SUSSEX SPINNERS -- Sparta, N.J. 2 & 4 Fridays Alpine School, Andover Road

A "Big Hello" from "Up Country". We've been dancing all summer and having great fun proving that a little heat prostration can't keep good square dancers down. Everyone remember to celebrate S/D Week, Sept. 16- 22, by spreading the good words. For Spinners DSD was Tuesday and class will continue under Bruce.

Our regular dance schedule began with our Black Cat Dance followed by Chuck Stinchcomb's Special. See our ad on page for details I$ . Take note: All of our schools are remodeling this season so keep an eye out for possible school changes. Check our flyers first and if in doubt, call 398-8660 or 398-1961.

Since Route #15 is now complete beyond Sparta, if you want to travel thru Sparta proper, look for signs marked 181 Sparta. If you miss that turn off, do not panic, because you can follow the expressway to its end (or next exit) and backtrack into town.

Connelly's Cut-ups R/D Club will begin new classes mid September in the afternoons. Their regular dance is 2 & 4 Mondays at the Presbyterian Church of Sparta. For further info watch for flyers or call Betty & Joe Weiss 383-1297•

STATEN SQUARE SET -- Lm Park, Staten Island, N.Y. 1 & 3 Saturdays St. Adalbert's Hall, 363 Morningstar Road

Congratulations to our newly elected officers and staff! They are a compatible group and we wish them every success in their term in office. We closed our season with a highly successful Hawaiian Luau chaired By Jim & Mary Finnegan. The authenticity of the decorations, together with the splendor of the native costumes worn by the committee, created the aura of a Polynesian Islet Jack & Fran Finley did an outstanding job in chairing our Installation Dinner-Dance in July. We all enjoyed the good food, fun, fellowship and calling of the inimitable Frannie Heintz.

BIG TOP 9 was a huge success! The biggest feature was the "Roasting" of Gene Lucarini. We're all looking forward to BIG TOP 10 which will be a Cavalcade of the best of all past BIG TOPS. Our annual Barn Dance was a tremendous success with Ken & Vicki Casertano as very capable chairmen. Thanks to the recruiting efforts of our recent graduating class and other members, it appears we will have an overwhelming number of potential dancers. See page 5 for more details on our beginners class.

Congratulations to Pat & Rick Hough and Fred & Janet Renschler - both proud parents of daughters born this summer.

Our first special of the season will be chaired by Frank &- Marge Bir- mingham. Our own "Big Chief" Manny Amor will be calling an "Indian Sum- mer" dance. In the tradition of SSS, you know it will be a real fun af- fair. reporters - Ray & Sandy La Vigne 212-447-5986

At our last dance of the season we had our annual covered dish supper. We enjoyed some of the best home cooking in Somerset County. Because it was so warm in the school, Vin Caruso and Grace & Walt Pennie brought their equipment outside and we danced under the stars in the parking lot. The whole event was just delightful. We wound up the season with our annual bus ride to the Hayloft.

Our first special of the year will be in October with Frannie Heintz calling. Our second in November will feature Al Brundage. Come dance with us. reporters - Roy & Betty Van Allen 201-647-4028

This was the theme for the 23rd National SjD Con- vention held at the Hemisfair in San Antonio June 27, 23 and 29th. 18,052 dancers sashayed through the

DO SA DO

Alamo City for this huge three day convention that BY THE ALAMO

featured almost non-stop dancing. After the evening activities, the dancers spilled out into the streets for more dancing. The NNJSDA proudly added their dis- play with 64 other Associations in the 31nowcase of

Ideas and were presented with a beautiful plaque. Our own publication was represented at the Press breakfast along with other from around the world, promoting square dancing to its fullest. In the parade of state our group marched side by side with the Pennsylvania group, in order to promote the National Convention for 1977 to be held in Atlantic City. Each group marched 4 abreast and carried their own state flag in front, with their respective state name on a large yellow rose held overhead.

Traditionally these conventions become a "family reunion" for dancers from throughout the nation and the world. They bring together persons with a common interest and then they combine this with friendship and fellowship, which are natural partners. This year 75 Japanese dancers joined hands with other dancers from around the world, including 79 from New Jersey. Besides dancing, there were panels, clinics and seminars... plus style shows and a sew-and-save panel....and much more

In 1975 all s/ders are invited to "Allemande in Heartland" in Kansas City, Missouri. But let's not forget to swell our registrations for classes in the next two years so that we may SET SAIL FOR ATLANTIC CITY in 1977.

Frank & Helen Cavanaugh

Delegates are checking our map of NJ to see if their club badge is in place. This is part of the NNJSDA "Showcase of Ideas" display. Some clubs are still not represented- have your delegate cheek and see if you need to donate a badge to the cause. Thanks to Dorothy Cavanaugh the map has since been mounted on a piece of black felt and the name embroidered in black. Looks great Our thanks Dorothy for a job well done!

SEE SAW SQUARES -- Pearl River, N.Y. 1 & 3 Saturdays -Evans Park School-, Marion Place

Have you missed us as much as we/ve missed you? Even though our summer activities included exciting dancing, we are glad to be back to home base. We wish to thank Addie Shipp Jones for the use of her home and pool where we enjoyed a wonderful picnic. We swam, ate, played games, and danced. It was great! We were well represented at the Rockland County Fair where Jules called for two nights. Jules also called a terrific dance for the NNJSDA and he has been calling at Petruska Park every other Monday through out the summer.

We have planned a fabulous year of dancing which will include parties, a bus ride, and the best dancing with our caller, Jules Pozsar, and Ed & Les Shearwood on the rounds. Join us at friendly See Saw Squares! Look- ing forward to dancing with you. Hilda Berger 914-354-4350

We hope you can make our first special the end of September when Jack Lasry of Miami, Florida is calling. See our ad on page a5. We'd love to see you there! But don't forget our regular dances, for we hope to see you at them too. We've got lots of spirit and vitality, so come join us for a whoppin° good time. PRINCETON SQUARES -- Princeton, N.J. 2 & 4 Fridays Community Park School , Wither spoon St.

We will have a new home this year. All you out of town friends- come to Community Park School for some mighty good dancing. It is easy to find. Witherspoon St. begins at the stop light on Nassau St (the main st.) in the center of the business area, across from the Princeton U. Campus, and runs at right angles to Nassau St. The School is .7 miles from this light, on the left side of Witherspoon. Be sure to watch our ad (p.38) as you will find many dances of special interest. Our fall season began with an Open House called by Bud Rawlins. There is no other dance in Sept. because of conflicting demands of the Philadelphia Convention. In October, Glenn Cooke & Bill Dannenhauer will be guest callers. Gordon Lentz will call our first dance in November- a home made pie dance. Also calling in November will be Glenn Cooke. Classes will be under the joint sponsorship of Princeton Adult School and ourselves - see page 5 for the details, reporters - Gene & Alice Keizer 609-921-6243

In January '58, six couples became so concerned over the s/d need for a good promotional program, clearance con- flicts, beginners classes, as well as summer dance oppor- tunities that they instigated a plan of action. Eleven clubs shared their interest by sending delegates to a meeting. Many of their ideas and suggestions are still being carried out today. As a means to further communi- cation between our widely scattered membership, GRAND JQUARE was created by Bob Keck in '59. He was succeeded by Bill Geier four year later. Business pressures caused him to turn the task over to the Tirrells in '65. Now 32

clubs strong and still growing, the Association can look back proudly on its accomplishments from sponsoring the 7th (and last) Atlantic Conven- tion, securing the first official proclamation of j/D Week in NJ & NY, publishing its own Basic Manual of SiD figures and providing the impetus for a callers class and seminar for new officers. In '74 we will hold our first Mini-Festival. It is interesting to note that officers in this couple activity were not listed thataway until '63 - past presidents are: Al Aderente, Bob Keck, Bud Sibbald, Bob Kellogg, Frank & Hazel Preston, Doc & Peg Tirrell, Gene & Grace Lucarini, Jack & Carol DeCoste, Ray & Pam Zeliff, Lyle & Edna Hopper and George & Phyllis Cowan.

NNJSDA liason to NNJ Round Dance Leaders Council - Bob & Addie Byrnes

Under Association sponsorship the NNJRDLC was formulated in 1965 to help straighten out and consolidate a rather confused round dance picture. With membership open to all interested area r/d leaders, this council meets bimonthly to exchange information, plan special events, & select the rounds-of-the-month (ROMs) for use September thus June. With the leaders including a majority of these dances in their programs, a dan- cer is assured of knowing most of the dances played at any NNJSDA club.

MERRI-EIGHTS -- East Brunswick, N.J. 1 & 3 Fridays Hammarskjold School, P/ es Lane

We have been keeping quite busy over the summer. Some folks went to San Antonio for the Convention, a lot of summer dances and workshops at- tended, we had two real great demonstrations; one at the JUNGLE HABITAT in New Milford, NJ and one on the Aircraft Carrier HERMES in NY Harbor. Our dinner dance in June was a great success as usual - which of course, carries our heartfelt thanks to the folks in charge. Our own George Winn is the poster winner. Congratulations George, we knew you could do it.

We are more than proud to announce that we will have GLENN COOKE as our caller this season - and DALE & WINNIE BISSEY as R/D Cuers. We feel very fortunate in obtaining these fine people and invite everyone to come and share our good fortune and be assured of a really fine night of dan- cing each and every time. "On The Square" - we'll see you "A Round" -- we hope. Do come! reporters - Jim & Steil Doyle 201-297.2967

We hope 'you All' have had a pleasant sunner and are anxiously waiting for a new season of square dancing. We 'Rangers' were on the prowl - In July we held our "Summer Sounds in the Glen" with Red Correll calling. August found us demonstrating our talents at the Sussex County Farm & Horse Show in Branchville. Later that month we all traveled to Layton,NJ to the home of our presidents Betsy & Ed Hull for a very delightful fam- ily style picnic. We've already held our Open House with many promising new dancers present. Our first regular dance of the season found Jolly Dick Pasvolsky, our club caller, whipping us all back into shape. Jean Elrod will cue rounds between tips nor those so inclined to round dance.

N.T. SQUARES -- Woodbridge, N.J. 1 & 3 Saturday School #19, Maryknoll Rd,Menlo Park Terrace

The club enjoyed a most successful summer season. Members turned out in record numbers to attend Association dances and various workshops. Our two summer dances, featuring Al Moses and Stan Zaczkowski, were big hits. S/D demonstrations found us on the beach at Laurence Harbor and in an Edison shopping center.

We will swing into the fall season with our top-notch Bruce Vertun at the mike. Workshops begin at 8 pm followed by a fun filled evening of first rate tips. Bruce promises exciting calling with new twists on old basics and multiple squares as a change of pace. A very charming couple, Peg & Joe Dockry, will treat us to exceptional rounds.

We are easy to travel to and easy to find. Ford Avenue at the junction of Route 1 and the Garden State Parkway. School #19 is located at the end of Maryknoll Road behind Allen Carpet and the Swiss Motel. See you next Saturday night. reporters - Sol & Harriette Koved 201-276-7213

ISLE SQUARES -- Oakwood Heights, Staten Island, N.Y. 2 & Wednesdays - COmmunity Church, 345 Guyon Avenue

Our regular dances for last season ended with our gala 6th annual Din-ner Dance with Glenn Cooke doing his usual excellent job calling. Lee & Ray Kirchmyer not only cued the rounds but played many old time favorites for our members and guests. Tom & Mary Gorham, presidents of Richmond Dancers, were the lucky winners of our basket of cheer,

Our past season has indeed been a most successful one. We would like to take the opportunity at this time to thank our members and many, many friends for their loyalty, support and patronage. We hope you will con- tinue to join us with Glenn Cooke calling. On our guest caller list we have listed Al Cargill, Marty Clifford and Bob Kellogg. Hope you all had a happy and healthy summer and that we will be seeing you soon.

HIX & CHIX -- Paramus, N.J. every Thursday K of C Hall, Bridle Way

Hope all had a great summer and are raring to get back to a full Fall schedule of dancing. We danced all Summer as in previous years. How- ever, we are sorry to say our club caller, Jim Flamer, wasn't with us because of health reasons, but as of this writing we are looking forward to Jim's return in October. Our new officers took the reims in June, & we wish them a successful year. Our new presidents are Ruth & Tom Hayes; VP's are El & Joe Rizzotti; Treasurers Gloria & Bob Wyman; Secretaries Joyce & Mac McManus; Delegates Betty & Don Mazzie.

We had an enjoyable summer, with a picnic at Westbrook Park, West Milford in June and dancing every Thursday to the tune of John Kalten- thaler, Dick Maddocks or Hal Holmes, with Flly Tout cueing the rounds. Judging from the smiling faces, a good time was had by all. We hope to have a beginners class comes September. Please call for our open house date and other information.

And then there is our annual Marshall Flippo dance in November. See our ad on page 19 . It's never too early to hold open a date to dance to Flip. Keep your eyes open for our announcements on our other upcoming events (which as of this writing are still on the drawing board). But in the meantime, come on down and square up with us.

We wish to thank all our square and round dance friends for their many good wishes and for adding to the joy of our wedding day.

HILL CITY SQUARES -- Summit, N.J. 1 & 3 Tuesdays Wilson School, Beekman Terrace

Welcome to the continuing saga of Hill City. Our story resumed with Manny Amor shaking the summer cobwebs out of our slow-to-respond shoes. Betty & Bud Sibbald report that the round dancers were in much better shape than most of us.

You will recall that when we last left this band of trepid dancers they had just elected new officers. Noticeable by their absence from the first dance were Sylvia & Ellis Peak, newly elected Treasurers. In our last episode we reported that they were awaiting clearance from the bond- ing company before officially assuming office. EMbarrassed by the bond- ing report, they had Esso quietly transfer them to Baton Rouge. Strange things have been happening at Hill City lately. Aside from the great rounds and squares, we've had visits from Charlie Chaplin and friends and from a real live horse who brought five squares for a raid from Y Squares with him.

Who knows what will happen next? Will Manny Amor wear his basic black? Will Betty Sibbald say another bad word? Will Charlie Chaplin reappear with the dancing horse? Tune in next issue and find out. Better yet, come see for yourselves and join in the fun. The sheriff and his deputies are there only to keep the crowd under control.

The Bride wore a White Square Dance Dress What is more heartwarming than the birth of a new family as a young

couple stand together in the presence of family and friends and say, :We choose each other for life". This year on a lovely day in June (Flag Day, in fact) Barbara Tirrell and Jim Connelly took their vows dressed in square dance clothes as were their attendants and many guests. Doc Tirrell expressed the closeness and warmth of their family life when in answer to "Who givest this woman...7" He said, clearly and firmly,

Her mother and I do". The reception which followed was a square and round dance festival as

the Tirrells and young Connellys acted as hosts at the Tenafly Squares dance. Barbara and Jim met at that club and since dancing is such an important part of their lives and love, this was the most appropriate celebration of their nuptials.

Bob Mitchell, always warm and gracious, outdid himself in making it a happy evening for the squares and "civilians" alike. The father of the bride cued the rounds. It's hard to believe, but he was smiling even more than usual. As for the mother of the bride - well, Peg Tirrell is, and always will be, a very special person to all of us,and that night night she looked like a lovely bride herself. And, naughty girl, all the time she was concealing from her friends that she was due for surgery in a few days. However, all went well and she's back dancing again.

As for the groom's parents - they tentatively ventured into square dancing and seemed to enjoy it, so maybe ? The bride and groom danced the first round solo "One Rose" - appropriate ROM for June and Jim really put his heart into the kiss at the end.

It was all a beautiful start in life for a couple of beautiful people and we wish them a long and happy life together with many years of dan-cing and teaching! Dorothy Paul Pullman ("....and and don't you d2rP elit i word, Peirt".)

HI TAW TWIRLERS -- Pearl River, N.Y. 1,2,3,5 Tuesdays; 4 Wednesday Franklin Avenue School

To those who have not danced this summer, welcome back a) the wonder- ful world of square dancing. To those who have danced, it was good to square up with you at dances. Also, it was great running into former mem- bers who had moved out of the area and were back visiting.

This year Hal Holmes won't be at the mike, but he and Doris promised to square up with us until they retire to Vermont. Taking his place is Jerry Schatzer along with our other two regular callers, Dick Jones and Al Brundage. We also have 9 guest callers lined up to fill in the gaps when our regulars are out of town.

We are planning a halloween costume party when Jim Cargill., from Sewell, NJ, will be our guest. Put on your thinking cap and get going on that costume. You might win a prize, but even if you don't, it's always fun to join in the excitement and parade of costumes. Those on the side lines always say,"Gee, I wish I had worn a costume". This time, don't be on the sidelines,be in on the whole thing. Prizes and fun will be on the agenda. Plans are in the works for another mystery bus ride next spring. If you've ever gone on any of Hi Taw's bus rides, you know thay are us- ually great. You never know what to expect next. Last year's was to Pocono Pines, PA to dance to John Kaltenthaler. (Incidentally, John will be making a guest appearance in January) Look for our ad on page 4/ . It gives our schedules of coming events. We'll have an ad in every issue keeping you up to date on what's going on at Hi Taw.

The official dress for the 1977 Conven- tion, which is to be held in Atlantic City, has been ex- ceptionally well received by the NNJ dancers. Sol & Harriette Koved, our 2 VP's, are

handling the packets of 677" material and sewing instructions. Each kit is priced at $17.44 and includes enough material to make both the shirt and the dress. Checks should be made payable to Steve Musial. A phone call to the Koveds at 201-276-7213 will give you any additional info Top left picture was

taken at our Graduates Ball showing many of our ladies in the of- ficial dress. Middle picture shows Gabe & Sila Dell' Angelo bringing packets back to the dancers on Staten Island. Bottom pic- ture was taken at a recent delegates meet- ing - an excellent time to secure your packet. Many area dancers are planning to wear their out- fits to our first Mini-Festival in December - See you then.......

"THE WORLD'S GREATEST SQUARE DANCE EVENT"

The National Square Dance Con. Article Number 3

The General Chairman for the 26th National Square Dance Convention, Steve & Dorothy Musial, were se-lected by the District Chairman of the Federation of Delaware Valley. They had to be. active square dancers and not an active caller or round dance instructor.

As General Chairman, Steve & Dot are required to attend the pre-C.on-vention Meetings and the Annual Conventions preceding the 26th Na-tional to learn their planning, tech-iques, and problems. They are kept acquainted through bulletins, news releases, and letters of all the de-velopments concerning these Con-ventions. In return they must keep these Conventions and the National Committee informed on the progress of the 26th National.

The General Chairman has com-plete authority to personally appoint the Assistant General Chairman and seven top Chairmen. He also has the final approval on all Committee Members selected by these Chair-men.

All Chairmen must be active square dancers, of course, but only the Program and Education Chair-men may not be active callers or round dance instructors. However, any square dancer, including callers & round dance instructors may serve on any Committee. Although this is not required, your General Chair-man feels that in addition to being well qualified the top Chairmen should have attended one or more National Conventions.

After the 25th National the Gen-eral Chairman and his Committee will be meeting at least every two months.

Results of the latest election returns indicate that our new presidents are Jim & Dorrie Brock; VP Jim & Terry McKay; secretaries Jerry & nix Welsh; & treasurers Bob Heise, assisted by Ruth Simon. Congratulations! If visitors experience a bit of merry old England at our dances, we won., der why? Since the last report, good ole' H.S. has really been busy. Last May, the dance hall was filled with over 18 squares who thoroughly enjoyed the calling of Al Aderente. Al was the former full-time caller for over 8 years. Take note: Al will return for our Valentine dance. Save that date!

Over 5 demonstration sets appeared at Boonton's Annual Fan Fair. Fan- Fair is a bigger than usual fair for the benefit of Riverside Hospital. And guess what, 47, yes, folks, 47 couples expressed an interest in sic!.

Our wind up featured Barry Medford, all the way from that second bigg- est state, Texas. Even at that late date in June, we packed in 16 sets. Barry will be with us in the future. Reluctant to end the season, a pic- nic at Lewis Morros Park in Morristown was held in June. About 500 peo- ple were there at the scene, 60 of whom were club members and their fam- ilies. The rest, by the way, were picnickers from other groups. We had a great time! See our ad on pagea for our fall schedule. THE SQUARE PINCUSHION.......A CORRECTION....

I'M sorry that many of you were inconvenienced with an incorrect address in our last issue. We were not aware of an address change nor did we expect them not to forward the mail when we found that that had happened. To all of you our deepest apologies and here is the correct address for Vee Gee Patterns, P. 0. Box 73

Rigby, Idaho 831442 Their catalog price also changed, to 600.

This issue we will make a "butterfly" sleeve. DAD

Using plain tissue paper, you will have to retrace 11

your short sleeve from a regular is pattern. Drop it at the cap about

2i" and add *" at each end. Gently draw a line curved to connect these points. Make the length of the underarm seam about 3 to 3". Measure from center of top to hem, this should be only about 6". Now draw a gentle curve to connect bottom of unerarm seam through 6" mark to the other underarm.

this point draw a curve to lower hem. Cut away excess pattern; the remaining piece is your new pattern. you will need L for each sleeve. 2 fabric and 2 lining.

Join underarm seams, right sides together of your fabric;repeat with lining. Press seam open. With right side of fabric to right side of lining, sew together at hem seam, VINIDell ARM from x to x. Trim seam, turn X to right side, press. Baste upper edges together. Insert sleeve as you would any other, matching underarm seams, and overlapping at center front. Back overlaps front. Sew through all thicknesses. Remove basting. As you make this sleeve you will find it can be trimmed to match your dress trim. You may find it necessary to ease it slightly over the shoulder cap for more comfort. This makes a very easy to wear sleeve when dancing. Do try it.

Rose Ericson 687-0342 THE SQUARE PINCUSHION

P.S. Thank you for your fan mail. We love hearing from you. Any problems, we'll try to help.„

The summer is over and we're certain you'll find your fellow dancers more interesting and stimulating due to their varied summer experiences, be it dancing in other localities or travelling to foreign countries or both. Our new slate of officers under the guidance of our presidents, Hattie & Joe Noel, are planning an exciting year for us. Activities in- clude classes taught by Bob Kellogg (see page 5); plans for exchanging visits with other clubs which proved so enjoyable in the past year; even more goodies at our sit-down refreshments after dancing and other special activities which will be announced from time to time.

We are especially honored that our own club members, Adeline & Bob Byrnes have been chosen as advisors to the RID Council meetings by the NNJSDA. if any of you have any thoughts concerning Round Dances at clubs tell them to the Byrnes and your voices will be heard.

Came to our first dance in October - rounds at 7:45 and squares at 8:30. Squares are by Bob Kellogg and he will be joined by his charming wife Jean for the rounds. Round Dancers will especially enjoy the 3/4 hour devoted to rounds before square dance time where Bob & Jean teach a new dance as well as cueing our older favorites. The wooden floor adds to the ease of dancing and you'll find that you can dance a great deal more without getting tired. So join us for an evening of good dancing and companionship. reporters - Hinda & Bill Lawrence 201-686.2374

The 4 days of the July 4th weekend when JUNGLE HABITAT featured square dancing were good, fun-filled

• days for the two squares that danced each day. A beastly hot July 4th failed to deter the colorful dancers or Dick Jove::. Manny Amor's last dance the 5th was rained out but failed to dampen anyone's

1 enthusiasm.....nor the camel that decided Mooney's s/d flag was just what he wanted for dinner and

followed their car until he "ate the whole thing"! Glenn Cooke called the 6th and Bob Mitchell wound it up Sunday. The callers did an excell-ent job and their wives were great in helping with the distribution of "What is Modern Western Square Dancing" phamphiets while our dancers were on stage. We cannot be sure how many spectators caught the bug. but those folks who signed up for lessons were added to our list of "Please contact when lance-Arc% begi n" and handed out to our delegates in September.

The personnel of Jungle Habitat were very impressed and are seriously considering asking the NNJSDA to return for a longer period of time next season. All of our dancers received a courtesy pass to enable them to return with their families, free of charge, at their convenience..before the end of October. Our sincere thanks to all who gave of themselves to show others the national folk dance of these United States.

As Autumn's colorful finery begins to invade Summer's lazy days, we find our members eager to begin our 7th season and bubbling over with tales of their vacation adventures. Our dancing season is already under way with our regular caller and new groom, Bruce Vertun (enthusiastically cheered on by his lovely new bride, Joyce). Our rounds will be cued by our other newlyweds, Jim and Barbara Connelly. Even though Cross Trail can't take any credit for match making, we would like to think we fanned the spark with our friendly atmosphere. By the way, Bruce will again be our very able instructor for ourclasss. (See page 5 for details)

We are real pleased to announce that our new 1st VP's, Hal & Esrey Hat-field, became the proud parents of a 10 lb., 9 oz. bouncing baby boy. The little fellow is named after his father, and we're sure his first full sentence will be "1 wanna go square dancing!". Our guest callers this fall are Stan Zaczkowski, Chip Hendrickson and Kerry Stutzman. This is Kerry's fifth season with us as a guest caller. Well, we're off and running and are looking forward to all of our friends joining us.

COLONIAL SQUARES -- Clark, N.J. every Thursday Karl Kumpf School, Mildred Terrace

Yes, Virginia, there really is a Santa Claus! And he came to us this summer wearing square dance clothes and looking very much like our own Lee Kopman. He brought with him a bag of challenging dancing for twelve to fifteen squares of enthusiastic dancers who were eager to workshop the advanced level of square dancing which Colonial Squares enjoy. Those who attended these workshops agree that dancing and learning are fun with a caller like Lee who can make intricate new calls seem easy, and easy calls interesting.

We dance every Thursday and we welcome to our club all experienced dancers who are interested in dancing not only for the pure fun of it, but also for the mental challenge and sense of accomplishment that lear. fling to do complex maneuvers can bring. Do something nice for yourself and make us a weekly habit this season.

We have been dancing all summer and are continuing our policy of book- ing the top national callers in the country. By the time you read this, Deuce Williams, Michigan, will have called, to be followed by Allen Tip- ton, Tenn, and Jack Lasry, Florida. We recommend one year post graduate dancing before attending our club.

We were selected by the Bergen Mall to present an exhibition of square dancing in conjunction with their summer blueberry festival. The two day program was held in their new enclosed mall, where caller Mike Foley put dancers thru their paces to the delight of the enthusiastic spectators. Incidentally Mike was awarded the Cloverleafs callers scholarship to Al Brundage's Callers College. Our travellers group is active again this year and have a full schedule of visits planned. Look for details on the bulletin board.

guest editorial -

We are looking forward to this new season of dancing with the hope that it will be at least as successful and eventful as

last year. We would also hope that all our more experienced dancers will continue to be cordial and patient with all new graduates and invite them into their squares with a smile. Remember one of the most significant of our ten commandments is, "Thou shalt not forget that you were once a be- ginner". Let's also remember to practice what we preach.

CIRCLE EIGHTS -- Tenafly, N.J. 4th Friday Mackay School, Jefferson Avenue

Four months and thirteen days after the delicious June dinner dance, we will be starting our fall season. The caller for October will be Bob Mitchell, one of the trio who called for our fantastic dinner dance. Looking ahead, the following dance will be with Jules Pozsar. Naturally rounds will be cued by Doc & Peg Tirrell, as done at all our dances.

We would like to express a sincere thanks to all who have helped to keep Circle Eights going. A special thanks to our hard working past presidents, Bertha & Lester Sneider. Happy dancing. Don't forget, our first dance is NOT in September but in October. Remember, if one comes to four dances, you will earn our special dangle.

A Circle Eight (of friendship) has no end, The only way it grows is to widen its bends; To widen the circle, more people must come in, A club that works together will never end up a ''teas been".

CALI-HOES SQUARE DANCE CLUB -- Asbury Park, N.J. 2 & 4 Thursdays Hayloft, 901 First Avenue

Down here at the shore the season of the sun with those lazy, delicious days at the beach has ended and with it, mercifully, all the traffic that it engendered. As in all things, Nature has a way of compensating for things lost, and so, we can look ahead to zippy fall days, exciting holi- days and the fulfillment of plans of things to do in the wonderful world of square dancing.

We figured we ought to help keep Roy & Sylvia Keleigh busy during their retirement years and so elected them Presidents of the club. Also sitting on the board of executives are the Tony Osages as vp's; Matt Youngs as Treasurers; Dick Kraybills as Secretaries; and the Ed Grabeaus as Delegates to the NNJSDA. Best wishes to them, and, indeed, to club officers everywhere.

During the summer Big Daddy Jim Cargill graced the caller's stand for us with the Tony Osages chairing the dance. Working with them and doing a fine job handling quite a crowd were the Dick Kraybills, Jack DeJongs, Jim Tanners and the Glen Landis. In the months ahead there will be a Pot luck supper, an old-f0ShinnAd harn Hanr.c), a bus trip and raids on other clubs.

Think you need an invitation to join us? Not so. Just bring your square dance shoes, your badges, your smiles and toddle on down.

WESTERN WHEELERS -- Park Ridge, N.J. 2nd Wednesday First Congregational Church, 131 Pascak Road

Summer dancing at Petruska Park was enjoyed by many, from near and far. We donated $100. to Citizens Committee for the Community Center in appre- ciation for the use of the tennis courts during the summer in Paramus.

Fun night brought out many, many prospective dancers for our antici- pated calsses. Enrollment will be closed after the first three sessions. Ray Turcotte will instruct the classes. He will also be calling our squares and the Shearwoods will be cueing rounds. We are always happy to see new faces and will try to make you feel at home.

COVERED BRIDGE SQUARES Nutley, N.J. 1 & 3 Mondays Grace Episcopal Church, 200 Highfield Lane

Summer sounds grow fainter and fainter as we move steadily into the fall season. For our members and visitors, it will be a continuation of the fun as we have been dancing all summer. Our very first picnic proved to be great fun. Sandy & John McNally, our VP's, very generously offered their home and grounds. Elsie & Joe Rizzotti, our very capable raid-co- ordinators, arranged a July raid on Hix & Chix. We had our banner pinned in turn, by See Saws, for the second time in three months. A truly warm and wonderful bunch. At the Nutley Jaycees invitation, we put on a s/d demonstration at their August carnival.

Jim & Barbara Connelly, our darling newly-weds, will be cueing and teaching rounds at our dances. Stan Zaczkowski or course will, be calling squares. Remember we begin at 8 PM. See you there.

BECOME A -- — PATRON

When you have visited 26 member clubs on their regularly scheduled dance night and danced to their regular caller, please mail this record to either the NNJSDA President or to NNJSDA "Patron", 3 Churchill Road, Cresskill, N.J. 07626. The record will be reviewed by the Executive Committee at its next meeting. If all the qualifications have been met, badgi-is will he awarded at the next Association dance. Happy visiting.

What do you do when after years of searching you finally locate a facility perfect for your planned MINI-FESTIVAL - finalize arrangements with the callers and rid leaders - distribute the flyers - order the identifying ribbons and then you get the word the facility nas this once in a lifetime opportunity to have a benefit for their college with none other than. Bob Hope - and his only free night is identical!!!

Why you take a deep breath - call an emergency Board meeting and pray a lot ..No wonder officers are so hard to find!!!

It meant a rather astronomical phone bill, but all those involved were contacted and when apprised of the situation graciously rearranged their schedules accordingly. New flyers with December 1st were ordered; it was too late to catch the ribbon order, so a new one was sent in (any one want 600 ribbons dated November '30th 19740.
