JOHN FRANCIS SALVENTI

DOCTOR OF LAWS-ROY GEORGE RINCLIFFE

Roy George Rincliffe was born in Sandusky, Ohio, and received his early education in the Ohio school system. He matriculated at Yale University and received the degree of Bachelor of Arts following which he pursued graduate studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and received the degree of Master of Science.

Mr. Rincliffe then launched an outstanding career in the Philadelphia Electric Company and its predecessor companies. He rose from an engineering assistant with the American Gas Company to President and Director of the Philadelphia Electric Company. Subsequently, he was promoted to Chairman of the Board and later to Chairman of the Executive Committee of the same corporation.

A history of the Philadelphia Electric Company, written in 1961, stated, "R. G. Rincliffe became Philadelphia E lectric Company's new President. A number of attributes had brought him forward to the position. He learned quickly and retained what he learned. A company way of indicating that someone was eager to learn was to say 'Why, he can ask as many questions as George Rincliffe.' People did things for him because they wanted to."

He was one of the prime movers in the development of nuclear energy as a source of fuel for the generation of electric power. He won the acclamation of his peers and was elected President of the Association of Edison Illuminating Companies and the Electrical Association of Philadelphia. .

Mr. Rincliffe has demonstrated an abiding interest in the educational, philanthropic, and health matters of our city. He has served as a Trustee of Drexel University and a Director and Vice President of the United Fund of Philadelphia, as well as a member of the Board of Lay Trustees of St. Joseph's College of Philadelphia. For many years he served faithfully as a member of the Board of Trustees and as the Chai rm an of the Hospital Committee and a member of the Executive Committee of Thomas Jefferson University. His wise counsel and sage advice were frequently sought by the faculty and officers of the University. H e has also served as Director of WHYY, Inc., the Greater Delaware Valley public television station, and as a Director of the Greater Phil adelphia Movement.

In recognition of his interests and service to the educational community, he has been awarded honorary degrees by Villanova University, St. Joseph's College of Philadelphia, Drexel University, and the Pennsylvania Military College.

His extraord inary adm inistrative and organizational capabilities have led to his appointment to a wide variety of corporate directorships in the Delaware Valley. These include the Susquehanna E lectric Company, the Susquehanna Power Company, the Penn Central Railroad, the Philadelphia National Bank, the Philadelphia Saving Fund Society, the Philadelphia Suburban Water Company, and the Benjamin Franklin Hotel Company.

Mr. Rincliffe has received numerous awards for his public service activities including the Commerce and Industry Award of the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Philadelphia; the National Conference of Christians and Jews National Human Relations Award ; the Army's Patriotic Civilian Service Emblem; the Philadelphia Press Association-Dean Award; the Philadelphia Crime Commission's Citizens Action Award; and the Chestnut Street Association Man of the Year Award.

Mr. Rincliffe is married to the former Eulall ia C. Peterson, long a leader in activities of the Women's Board of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Mrs. Rincliffe's father, Hiram Deway Peterson, M.D., graduated from Jefferson Medical College in 1898. Mr. and Mrs. Rincliffe are the parents of three daughters.

In addition to all of his other accomplishments, Mr. Rincliffe is an outstanding food and wine gourmet.

DOCTOR OF HUM A NE LETTERS-EUGENE ORMANDY

Eugene Ormandy was born in Budapest on November 18, 1899. He was barely more than an infant when his father tucked a violin, one-eighth the regular size, under his chin. When he was five years old, Master Ormandy entered the Royal Academy of Music in Budapest and at age nine he became a pupil of the great violinist, Jeno Hubay after whom he was named (Eugene is translated as Jeno in Hungarian). '

. ~ugene Ormandy r.eceived his professor's diploma at the Royal Academy and was given degrees in violin, compos1t10n, and counterpomt when he was only seventeen years old. Between extensive concert tours as a virtuoso he taught in Budapest at the State Conservatory. In 1921, a long-cherished ambition was realized when he was invited to make a concert tour to the United States. The tour was beset by many difficulties and the young artist found himself in a strange country without funds or friends. However, his musical talent and self-determination served h im well and he became in short time a well-known conductor on American radio.

The turnin.g point .in his career came in 1931 when Arturo. T<?sc~nini suddei;ily became ill and was unable to guest condu~t the Ph!l adel~hia Orches tra. Mr. Orl!landy accepted .an mv1t?t10n to be his replacement and scored an overnight sensation. In the audience was a representative from the Mmneapohs Symphony Orchestra, who was looking for a successor to their ailing maestro, H enri Verbruggen. Mr. Ormandy was immediately signed as guest conductor and shortly thereafter as permanent conductor. He returned to the Philadelphia Orchestra as a guest conductor for five weeks each year. He held the post at Minneapolis until 1936 when he was invited to return to Philadelphia-this time as Music Director and Conductor.

Sine~ that time, M.r. Or~andy ~~s ~ide~ the Philadelphia <?rchestra on a course to musical world leadership, whether 1t be at home m Ph iladelphia s h1stonc Academy of Music, on tour across America in summer residence a t the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, or on tours around the world. '

. Am~n~ . the countless tribute~ and honors bestowed upon the. Phi!adelphia Orchestra's legendary maestro is the highest c1v1han award of the Umted States Government, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which President Nixon presented to Mr. Ormandy in the Academy of Music on January 24, 1970. H e also holds the highest award the Austrian government can bestow upon a civilian, the Honor Cross for Arts and Sciences, First Class. In addition he received the covete~ Philadelphia Award and the Natio!lal Recognition Aw~rd of the Freedoms Foundation in ea;ly 1970. Mr. Ormandy is a Commander of the French Leg10n of Honor, a Krnght of the Order of the White Rose of Finland a holder of the medals of the Mahler and Bruckner Societies, and has been awarded honorary doctorate degrees fr~m seventeen major universities and schools of music. He was presented with a Distinguished Citizen's Award by Governor Milton J. Shapp of Pennsylvania at the Gala Opening Concert of the 1971-72 concert season. In 1972 Mr. Ormandy was made a Commandatore of Merit of the Italian Republic by the Government of Italy. '

The wearing of academic dress dates back to the early days of the oldest universities in the world. In the American Council on Education's book entitled "American Universities and Colleges" it is suggested that "gowns may have been counted necessary for warmth in the unheated buildings frequented by medieval scholars. Hoods seem to have served to cover the tonsured head ... "

Throughout the years European universities have continued to show great diversity in their academic dress. American universities, on the other hand, when they decided to adopt academic dress about fifty years ago, immediately established a code of regulations which today is followed by almost all American institutions. The establishment of this code has made it possible to distinguish the Bachelors, Masters, and Doctors and at the same time recognize the university which has given them the degree.

The Bachelor's gown has pointed sleeves and is worn closed. The Master's gown has oblong sleeves, open at the wrist. The rear part of its oblong shape is square cut and the front part has an arc cut away, and is worn open or closed. The Doctor's gown has bell-shaped sleeves. It is worn opened or closed. Cotton poplin or similar material is used for the Bachelor's and Master's degrees, and rayon or silk ribbed material is used for the Doctor's degree.

The hoods vary in length: 48 inches for the Doctor's degree, 42 inches for the Master's, and 36 inches for the Bachelor's. All hoods are lined in silk in the academic color or colors of the institution conferring the degree. If the institution has more than one color, the colors are shown in divisions using chevrons. The binding or edge of the hood is usually made of velvet in the color desiignating the subject in which the degree was granted.

Black mortarboards are worn for all degrees.

Some of the colors in the bindings of the hoods are: white ... lilac light blue green apricot
