  • 1 he education I propose includes all that is proper for a man. and is one in which all men who are born into this world should share ... Our first wish is that all men should be educated fully to full humanity; not only one individual, nor a few, nor even many, but all men together and single, young and old, rich and poor, of high and lowly birth, men and women in a word, all whose fate it is to be born human beings; so that at last the whole of the human race may become educated, men of all ages, all conditions, both sexes and all nations. Our second wish is that every man should be wholly educated, rightly formed not only in one single matter or in a few or even in many, but in all things which perfect human nature . ..

John Amos Comenius The Great Didactic, 1632

  • Behind these time-honored Proctor walls lies a noble spirit of liberal, humanizing Education.

    I N T E L L E C T U A L M A T U R I T Y

Proctor recognizes its role as a college preparatory school and maintains it primarv objective of "helping each student to qualify for the best possible college according to his potential." It offers a basic college preparatory curriculum, remedial work tutoring, conferences, courses, and a variety of electives. How-ever in a spirit of mutual cooperation and respect, students may involve them-selves in "course directions, development of esthetic values in art and music, and development of manual skills in wood and metal shop." Opportunities for independent study are also strongly encouraged in various and sundry areas. As Alfred Whitehead has succinctly stated many times, "There is only one subject matter for education, and that is Life in all its manifestations", and Socrates also. "For our conversation is not about something casual, but about the proper way to live." Thus, we at Proctor "accept the responsibility for helping each other to realize other broader areas of potential, such as .. .

Education should prepare people not just to earn a living but to live a life a creative, humane, and sensitive life . .. True education should lead a student to a point beyond which he can educate himself. This point is reached when the person has both the desire and the capacity to learn for himself, to dig out what he needs to know, as well as the capacity to judge what is worth learning. Social maturity at Proctor becomes an integral part of this liberalizing education. Through student gov-ernment, the job system, the honor system, room study, strong dorm life, involvement in the Wilderness Experience Program and in-volvement in decision making process at all levels, the Proctorite humanizes and deepens his many faceted personality and his appreci-ation of his own worth as an individual among individuals.

The presence of a humanizing, liberal spirit of education can best be seen in the work that we do rather than the sounds that we make. In a spirit of cooperation and togeth-

erness, we at Proctor uncover our hidden talents, whether working out on the athletic fields, or on the Wilderness Experience, skiing on snow-capped mountain tops, kayaking deep in a hidden forest, or creating our own individual sport projects. While working in a group, we are finding ourselves and our potential, and opening new channels of experience for enriching our daily lives. In the words of our Proctor Philosophy, we are "maximizing the possibility of personal growth for all members of our community."

  • The great men of culture are those who have a passion for diffusing, for making prevail, for carrying from one end of society to the other, the best knowledge, the best ideas of their time; who have laboured to divest knowledge of all that was harsh, uncouth, difficult, abstract, professional, exclusive; to humanize it, to make it efficient outside the clique of the cultivated and learned, yet still remaining, the best knowledge and thought of the time, and a true source, therefore of sweetness and light.

  • Proctor boasts of its Parents, Board of Trustees, and Generous Benefactors.

Proctor's proudest boast is its Parents, Board of Trustees, and generous Benefactors. Their loyal and generous cooperation continues to provide Proctor with top quality facilities and education. Extensive library renovation, a new regulation size hockey rink, substantial fund-ing for scholarship programming, new faculty apartments, widespread new equipment for classrooms, are just a few of the results of their long and arduous efforts. They meet periodically during the school year, dance, make pledges and donations to the school, laugh, attend plays, cheer at football games, complain, give up their precious time for Proc-tor functions, check on the progress of their sons and daughters, plan parties, make friends, and in a word, work themselves to death for anything that will help Proctor. One couldn't ask for more, perseveringly loyal and generous groups for our ongoing Community. W e honour them as our most loyal followers.

Editor's Note: I a m not going to say too much except to express m y deepest

thanks to all who helped m e complete this difficult task. Also I am sure that I a m speaking for everyone at Proctor when I send thanks to those who contributed and gave their support. With limited organization, I a m happy to think that we have turned out a good representation of the 1973 year at Proctor. In the future, I hope things will be more organized and the staff can produce the book that we all strive to produce every year. Good Luck to all those next year.
