Fighting onthe Egyptian front was more sporadic with neitherside committing enough manpower to seriously challengethe other's position.

Israeli ground forces pushed about 11 kilometersbeyond the 1967 cease-fire line, along a narrow frontbetween Mount Hermon and Qunaytirah in the northernGolan Heights, yesterday afternoon,. _the likely Israeli target in Syria will be Qatana,

about 20 kilometerssouthwest o Damascus. Israeli aircraft continuedto pound Syrian positions last night and this morning, especially on the flanks of the most advanced Israeliunits. Israeli aircraft attacked Damascus interna-tional airport and seven other nearby Syrian airfieldsyesterday. Five Israeli planes were lost as a resultof ground fire--probably SA-6 missiles. Syria re-ported Israeli naval units and helicopters attackedthe port of Tartus shortly before midnight last night.Damascus claimed to have destroyed three Israeli boatsand a helicopter in this engagement. A Soviet mer-chant vessel was struck by two missiles, but no cas-ualties were reported.

The situation in the Sinai remains relativelyunchanged. The Egyptians have not made a serious at-tempt to expand their positions on the east bank ofthe canal nor have they launched a major drive east-ward toward the Sinai passes. The Israeli Air Forcecontinues to attack Egyptian positions along thecanal; .over 120 sorties were flown yesterday andseveral aircraft were lost to round fire. Only afew Egyptian fighters were flying--nonewere seen over the east ban . small Egyptianthrust to move away from the canal was made southof Suez City, but apparently was turned back by theIsraelis.
