RUTGERS-DOUGLASS PROMENADERS -- New Brunswick, N.J. alternate Thursdays Bartlett Hall, Rutgers University

Our club has been steadily increasing in numbers each year and we are looking forward to a very enjoyable year in 1968-1969. Fall dance dates are Sept. 12,26; Oct. 10,24; Nov. 7,21 & Dec. 5,12. "V= Art Seele is our caller with dances held 0 in the Bartlett Hall Auditorium in the College of Agriculture & Environmental. Science. See the map. As a club com-posed mainly of college students it is not practical for us to conduct sepa- rate classes. Therefore the lessons are incorporated into our regularly scheduled dances. Visitors are always welcome.

HILL CITY SQUARES -- Summit, N.J. 1 & 3 TUESDAYS Wilson School, Beekman Terrace

We will start the season at the same location with the same caller, Manny Amor, but with a different day. So please put down on your calendar Hill City is 1 & 3 Tuesdays of the month - first dance Sept. 17. Two other dates worthy of putting on your calendar for the coming season are October 29 (this fall) and April 29 (next spring). These are the special nights reserved for Jim Cargill, who needs no introduction to Jerseyites. We anticipate the usual good time when Big Daddy puts us through the paces.

We are also planning a class during the coming season ( for more info see pg. 17 ). Bruce Vertun will do the instruction and last year's class is proof of what can result from his fine teaching.

STATEN SQUARE SET 1 & 3 Saturdays

-- Elm Park, Staten Island, N.Y. St. Adalberts Hall - 363 Morningstar Rd.

We held our last dance June wished it was our first dance..

15. Manny called so great that everyone ..and now it is time for our first! John &

Kay Adams cued the rounds. we ended the evening with our usual buffet, all home made goodies. This is being written from the Americus Hotel in Allen-town, our BIG-TOP week-end. Words cannot express the happenings. The theme of our week-end was, as you must have guessed, Circus Time. Our big Friday Night attraction was the blast off of the Great Goo-Gdootz....being shot out of our cannon. The excitement and the tension of this event was priceless. Saturday, in the middle of many games, our usual Bathing Beauty contest was won by Don Abramson. A treasure Hunt and a very unusual fairy tale "Little Top Riding Hood" written by Vee Mason. It was a hilarious all male cast. We were paid a visit by Tiny Tim and John and Marsha. Our callers Manny Amor and Frannie Heintz and Round Dance Instructors Kay & John Adams were the greatest.

New officers are Jim & Mary Colon pres., Gene & Grace Lucarini, veeps, Arthur & Madeline Volsario treas., Natty & Beverly Blaine rec. sec., and Vinny & Mary Vasta cor. sec.. Classes will be starting soon. Please call for more information. reporters - Tony & Gloria Buffa 212-987-5534

SWINGIN' STARS -- Maywood, N.J. 2 & 4 Saturdays Maywood Avenue School

Meet us at our new location at the Maywood Avenue School on Maywood Avenue, Maywood - south of route 4, near Passaic St. We started Sept. 14 with Jerry Salisbury calling. Thereafter we will dance as usual with Manny Amor on the 4th Saturday and Dick Jones on the 2nd. It's the cross-road of Bergen County near routes 4 & 17 and easy for all to reach. As a great added attraction Bud & Betty Sibbald and Mildred & Dan Hulin will continue the round dance workshop 7:30-8:30 before each dance. It was nice to see Mildred at the Max Forsythe dance fully recovered from her fall. To all you people who had such a good time at that dance - and to the few who may have missed it- he'll be back on July 16, 1969. Mark your datebook now And Jay King is scheduled for April. Martin & Marilyn Graber are continuing the good work of the Buratovich, Bonneaus and other presidents by planning a great season of dancing for us.

SOMERSET HILLS SQUARES -- Basking Ridge, N.J. 2 & 4 Tuesdays Cedar Hill School Gym

Summer's over and we just can't wait to see all our friends again as the fall season gets underway. Our first dance was Sept. 10 - a sort of work-shop dance to help get us back in shape after the summer slump. Well, some of us slumped. Others danced their way around the country to places like Florida, Omaha, not to mention here and there in good old New Jersey. We are happy to be able to tell you that our caller is still Vin Caruso, who gave us such good times last year. We will be sponsoring a class again this year - (see pg. 17 ). If you have friends in this area who are inter-ested please let us know.

Just one more line to plug our special dance on October 22 with Bob Yerington. Many of you danced with us when he called for us last year. For those of you who weren't able to make it then, well -- who said that opportunity never comes again? More details - see our ad.

RAMAPO SQUARES -- Oakland, N.J.

2 & 4 Saturdays Heights School, Seminole Avenue

Ramapo's Family Picnic, held June 29th at Shepherd Lake, was the best ever! A glorious sunny day brought out about 150 picnickers, including many youngsters. Room for 5 sets, on cement and grass, was kept filled in a 2-hour session enjoyed as much by the spectators as by the dancers.

Another summer experience - unique and short-lived - was our partici-pation in Ringwood Borough's Golden Jubilee Festival. Two sets turned up on a hot Saturday only to find that the available electric power was in-adequate for the P.A. system. In the array of fire engines on review was a beautiful white engine which had won 2nd place in the judging. Its crew kindly offered to give us power •rom their generator. All went well for about half an hour, with some 79 folks participating. Then, right in the middle of our demonstration tip,, the sound petered out with a slow groan. We were assured our use of the power didn't harm the generator and that a faulty starter was the culprit. But so ended the dancing. Does this en-title somebody to a Fire Engine badge or something?

Sunday night sessions at the Ramapo Mt. Lakes Club will continue thru Sept. 22, followed by "Open House" on the 29th for prospective new dancers for whom classes will start Oct., 6.

A very serious problem has faaed us all summer. Not until this writing did we know whether Ramapo had a-home for the coming season. It is with great relief that we are able to announce that we will continue at the Heights School starting Sept. 29th. Our callers will again be Beulah Samec and Lee Kopman, with visiting callers in November and April. Round dances will be conducted by the Tirrells who will give a half-hour of rounds starting at 8 PM. PLEASE read page 17 . We hope all our friends will

8 cooperate with us. reporter - Vi Clapp 337-7578

Page 9: 1968 September Grand Square - NNJSDA · RUTGERS-DOUGLASS PROMENADERS -- New Brunswick, N.J. alternate Thursdays Bartlett Hall, Rutgers University Our club has been steadily increasing

A very serious problem has worried RAMAPO SQUARES - whether or not they would have a place to dance this season.

Because of a very costly floor renovation and redecoration of the school gym, the Oakland Board of Education ruled

that the school could no longer be used for other than school activities. Only after weeks of discussions, meetings, concessions and promises nade by us have we finally been given permission to continue using the school. (ED. Note - all during this time they searched fruitlessly for a new place)

However, it is absolutely imperative that men dancers wear sneakers and gals wear soft-soled, no-heel, ballet type S/D slippers, or sneakers. NO heeled, leather-

soled shoos permitted. Also, it is important that this approved footwear be used indoors only. That is, it should not be worn enroute to the dance because of sand, etc., which may become imbedded in the soles and scratch the floor.

Unless one has been through the nightmare of almost (by a hair) losing a very desirable school, and unless

one has seen the beautiful, expensive new floor which the school wishes to protect, it perhaps will be hard to under-

stand and accept these rules about footwear. But for Ramapo, it is a matter of life or death, and we have agreed to an after

dance inspection, and to pay for any damages to the floor........ This problem - and solution - is not new; we are only copying clubs

of other areas who are dancing successfully in sneakers. It is ho?ed our S/D friends will understand our problem and continue to enjoy dancing with Ramapo Squares. Should anyone forget to bring the proper footwear - heavy socks will be ftrnished. Thank you for your cooperation. See you in•Oakland.

MOUNTAIN SQUARES Parsippany, N.J. 1 & 3 Mondays Brook lawn Jr. High School, Rt. 202

Again we are getting back to the swing of things after a few months lull in our schedule. Due to unforseen circumstances, we had to cancel our sum-mer dances. To those of you whom we were unable to get in touch wIth, we are sorry for any inconvenience it caused. Our Curley Custer Dance in May was a huge success. 26 + squares turned out. Thank you, everyone. Curley called an excellent dance. Hearing the many "hoots" and "howls" from the floor, you all must have enjoyed it too.

On Dec. 2 we will have a special - Marshall Flippo; and Feb. 17, 1969 Ron Schneider will be our guest. Mark these on your calendar now for the specials not to be missed. Mountain Squares past presidents, Ray & Pam, are NNJSDA presidents this year. I know from past experience working with them the Association will benefit with their leadership. Success to you both. This year Caryl & Shirley Pettijohn are our presidents; Al & Evelyn Hark secretaries and Wes & lrtne Sharples, treasurers. Again this year, Bill & Dot Keller will be instructing the round dances. There seems to have been more summer dancing available the recent "off season" than ever before and many of the Reelers have taken full advantage of it to keep themselves in trim. Our mid-summer picnic and dance took place on August 2. The viands so generously furnished by the ladies of the club were in line with their usual excellence and abundance. However, a hearty dance was enjoyed after RFF (Recovery From the Feast).

A beginners class is being planned to begin in October -(see pg. 17 ) There will be a FREE DANCE (come one, come all) at the Elementary School September 25. The purpose is to introduce new people to square dancing. Regular dances start September 20. Come see us.

Under the auspices of the NNJSDA all area rid leaders will continue their bi-monthly meetings at which time they will choose the ROM's, with every 3rd month probably a Classic. All clubs will be notified of their decisions, with the dance featured in GRAND SQUARE. It is suggested that clubs who play rounds between tips include the ROM's so that visitors from other Association clubs may join in their round dance program too.

DANCING SQUARES -- Cranford, N.J. 1 & 3 Saturdays ----13=F----diSMliingaecoo,loomingdale Ave.

If you would like a flier containing our calendar and a map to our new location, please contact the Burnettes, 60 Mountain Avenue, Warren Township, N.J.

ScipArtz 'Dattrivtra.. -IAA 46. 'Un- A LAMPLITERS -- Spotswood, N.J.

After our successful graduation we did not end our dancing season till June. Twenty-four Lampliters and eight adults travelled south of the Mason-Dixon line to Wheaton, Ad. for their annual Spring Squarenade. Camping in Greenbelt National Forest for the weekend, we danced all Satur-day with squares from Virginia, Md., W. Va., Pa., and N.J. Those that did not have to leave early on Sunday joined in touring Mt. Vernon..

Members with camping equipment joined with the Raving Squares, the Gar-den State Square Dance Campers and other national square dance groups in the East. A few travelled and camped out to the National in Omaha where steps and plans were made to journey in 1970 to Louisville with an exhibition group. Lessons will again begin in September (see pg.17). Any teen and pre-teen 9-19 who may be interested contact either Art Handwerk (201-251- 2932) or Jack Shoffner (201-548-5506).

SHONGUM MOUNTAINEERS -- Morris Plains, N.J. every Tuesday aunty Buildings

It was indeed a long hot summer, but the Mountaineers danced every Tuesday through it all, though at the peak of vacations we were down to one square. Bob Mitchell, our regular 1 & 3 Tuesday caller, returned re-cently from a job as a travelling counsellor with a bus load of teenagers on an "all America tour"! Second and fourth Tuesdays will continue as a record and tape workshop.

A high spot of our year was our participation in the recent Teen age 4H Festival at the Flemington Fair which netted us a second in Juniors and a first in Seniors. Our advisors are the Knights 201-895-2559.

On June 15th a hearty bunch left the east coast to begin their caravan to the 17th National Convention. Stop offs were planned and camping was done in Raccoon State Park, Pa., Proud Lake State Park, Michigan, Indiana Dunes Park, Indiana and Williamsburg, Iowa all before arriving in Onaha.

While in Michigan a tour was made of the River Rouge Ford Plant to see their steel mill and Cougar & Mustang assembly line in operation. Oir stop off in Williamsburg was in the form of a trail in dance in their local roller skating rink. The Chamber of Commerce provided camping space at the local high school with hot showers both before and after the dance.

Omaha had trail in dances Wednesday evening throughout the city. Camping was also provided both in the city and the outlying communities. Those who were daring camped out on cleared land to be used for th-e Inter-state Highway system one block from the auditorium without water, rest rooms or electricity. It took a hearty group to endure.

Three large rooms for square dancing with smaller ones being brought in to use. One other room was for the exclusive use of teen age square dancing. Smaller rooms were in use for round dancing. While there did not appear to be a large group of the well known callers, New Jersey was represented with Hal Holmes, Dick Jones, Jack Shoffner and calling for her first national Chris Shoffner. Panels were in abundance for teen age dancing, calling, sewing, exhibitions and round dancing. A fashion show was incorpcTated in the sewing panel with various callers wives, including Doris Shoffner, showing off their sewing abilities. After parties were held each evening through out the city. An after party was held each evening in the Masonic Temple for teen alters for square dancing, rock and roll and folk singing groups.

Saturday evening the curtain rang down and the twelve couples dispersed . Those from the Jersey group were the Handwerks, Thompsons, Prudens, Pat O'Brien and the Shoffners. The others in our group were from New Ihaand, Pa., Ohio, Ill., Iowa and Virginia. (Already plans are being formLllated to make the 19th in Louisville if you're interested just let tine mhoffners know.)

CIRCLE T -- North Bergen, N.J. Wednesdays - every-(tentatively) Church of the Transfiguration 8-10:30 PM 79th St. & Palisade Avenue

Our thanks to all who came out to our summer dances. It was great meeting members from other clubs and exchanging ideas. We sincerely apologize to those who came on two dates to find no dance due to a conflict wit-i other nearby dances. The air-conditioning failed to offset the terrific heat the first few weeks And the almost weekly cloudbursts did not help tra-Jelling. Callers Bob Gray, Marty Winter, Al FUlmer and Dick Haddocks deserve medals in their attempts to cope with the bad acoustics. God Bless them. We owe them a vote of appreciation. Embryo Circle T's will start Sept. 11 (see p.17) Also at that time we will decide on a definite weekly dance night, elect officers and make-plans. We hope all residents of Hudson County and sur-rounding areas will avail themselves of this opportunity to learn :he sport right here at home. Graduates are invited to attend and join us. The wel-come mat is always out. reporter - Mary Fowler 201-868-1738

NORTHERN NEW JERSEY

SQUARE DANCERS ASSOCIATION MINI - ports of NNJSDA Committee Chairmen -

BEGINNER CLASSES . Bruce & Bev Tharp are in charge. See pg. i7 for when classes will begin. A revised list will be published in the next issue. The NNJSDA will provide temporary badges, instruction books, diplomas and perfect attendance pins for classes that qualify. BASIC BOOKS & S/D BASICS COORDINATOR - Dick & Cookie Lighthipe's terrific job on the basics has been sent to interested folks for comments, etc. It is too late for it to be available this year, thus the NNJSDA will continue to supply, free of charge, the SIO Basic Booklets.

ROUND DANCE COMMITTER - No ROM for Sept.; VERY CHIC for Oct. Grenn 14016 CLEARANCE COMMITTEE - The Brixies 201-826-0533 suggest if you are cancelling a dance to let them know for the records. Please contact them before you schedule a special dance. Conflicts hurt everyone.

BANNER RAIDS - suggestions will be offered at Sept. Delegate's meeting. MEMBERSHIP - The Executive Board recommends that the Rutger-Douglass Prom- enaders be accepted into membership in the NNJSDA. With the application for membership of the Lampliters will be discussed at the Sept. meeting.

SUMMER DANCES - In spite of summer heat, presidential nominating conventions and vacations 'a record number of dancers supported our NNJSDA summer dances. Since the Association treasury receives most of its financial support thru support of the dances they sponsor (6 or 7 in the summer and usually just 1 guest caller in the fall and the Callers Carnival in the Spring) your support is appreciated. In charge this year are veeps Lyle & Edna Hopper.

FREELOADERS - Four graduates qualified as Freeloaders and will be awarded their badges. They are now entitled to attend any Association sponsored event for the coming season free-of-charge. See page for listing.

WHAT IS MODERN WESTERN SQUARE DANCING? phamplets are now available for your distribution. Greated by the Tirrells as a promotional type of ma- terial to be used at one-night stands, missionary nites, etc. these 4 page brochures answer most non-dancers questions about SiD and include names & addresses of people to contact with room for any club using them to adc their own name. These are free upon request. SINGLES ROSTER - Since the last Singles Roster Chairman resigned, 6e-to her marriage to another square dancer, this vital roster has been allowed to lapse. Now Mary Magner 111 Miln Street, Cranford, NJ 07016 is the new Chairman. She suggests folks desiring to be put on the Singles Roster include along with their name, address and phone number their age and dancing ex- perience. PATRON - So far no one has qualified for this badge....dancing with all r77177-clubs in the Association. Anyone desiring a card for signatures contact Lyle & Edna Hopper or the Tirrells.

The news BOB & EDITH THOMPSON were being transfered to Richmond, Virginia came as an unpleasant surprise to all. For many of the old timers, as well as the newer dancers, Bob & Edith were Mr. & Mrs. Of the Dancer around here....with many of the area leaders receiving their ir4tial introduction to round dancing thru them. Their contribution in their chosen field has been immeasurable... they will be missed. They departed with our grateful thanks for many pleasurable hours and best wishes for the future.
