NEWSLETTER 2015 President’s Farewell Message APWA Wow! What a year! It certainly appears that 2015 was our best year for an association and for an industry in a long time. The vast majority of folks I talk to are hiring or expanding services. Even the local entities are bringing people back and offering services that were suspended or cancelled during the Great Recession. 2015 was also the 50th Anniversary of the Nevada Chapter of APWA. I hope everyone was able to aend either one of our conferences or a luncheon where we were able to say “thank you” to our members for their continued support. If not, please accept my personal “Thank You!” for your membership. As we continue to work our way back from the recession, I encourage you to look towards serving on an APWA Branch or Commiee. I know I can personally aest to the fun I’ve had and the friend- ships I’ve developed over the many years of serving the membership. To dispel any continued controversy, I’ve consulted many experts including random people in the elevator and the shorts I was wearing in Laughlin, NV are salmon in color. Lastly, I’d like to publicly thank Sco Hansen for his dedication to the Nevada Chapter. Sco will be taking the reins next year as your Nevada Chapter President. I know Sco cares deeply for APWA and we are in great hands with Sco’s enthusiasm and commitment to leading our Chapter. Spring Conference in Laughlin

After many years in Mesquite, the Spring Conference returned to Laughlin this year! In celebration of the Chapter’s 50th Anniversary, all aspects of the conference were taken up a notch, or two or three! The conference started off with an enjoyable leadership presentation by fellow Nevadan, and profes-sional speaker, Marilyn Sherman. Marilyn gave us key leadership principles that will help us get in the front row seat in life and as leaders! She was followed by Pawn Star Historian, Mark Hall-Patton and Clark County Commissioner Brown. Attendees were treated to a Hawaiian Luau at Harrah’s, complete with transportation by water taxi, luau dancers, and a kalua pig. The night concluded with a YP Poker Bar Crawl event that had great participation from all ages!If you didn’t get your fill of PDH’s then you just didn’t try. With three tracks of speakers there were more than 30 speakers at the conference! Our keynote speaker this year, Sheldon Yellen (featured on CBS’ Undercover Boss), taught us about overcoming adversity and putting people first in our organiza-tions. Sheldon, CEO of Belfor, explained that he didn’t start out with an easy life (remember his start in Detroit and his mom coming to get him at school to make his bed?!), but he was able to take a $5 million company to a $1.5 billion global leader by putting people first. If you didn’t attend in 2015, put 2016 on your calendar now to ensure you have the opportunity for superb education, checking out products and services from our vendors, company recognition through sponsorships, project recognition at the POTY awards and socializing and networking galore. -Lauren Warren, CTSAPWA Newsletter Editor

FALL

CONFERENCE

Outstanding Member of The YearTom Adams

The Broadbent AwardKevin Hill

Ian Hill inspiring the crowd to give back to the community.

This year the Fall Conference provided all we would expect and more! Attendees enjoyed the variety of three tracks of speakers, inspir-ing motivation from Ian Hill’s keynote presentation, networking and socializing at the welcome reception and banquet, and the incredibly perfect (dare I say, no snow?) weather for Friday’s mountain biking and golf tournament! Those who were out late at Cabo Wabo were fortunate enough to see Sammy Hagar perform live! We are also pleased to report that Kevin Hill made it through TSA with his hefty bronze eagle award. Overall, it was a great opportunity to catch up with old colleagues, meet new friends and enhance our knowledge and skill set. See you at the next conference! -Lauren Warren, CTS APWA Newsletter Editor

2015Celebrating50Years

Events

This year Chapter Officers made a special effort to thank members for a wonderful 50 years as a Chapter! Conferences included extra activities, top-knotch keynote speakers, & upscale banquets. Life-time members were recognized with a special gift. A special cake, anniversary pins & calendars were also part of the year. As always, members were busy volunteering their time on various committees and giving back to our community. For example, the Southern Branch Stuff the Stocking Committee raised $10,000 in donations to assist the families and individuals receiving assistance from Neighborhood Housing Services of Southern Nevada (NHSSN). THANK YOU MEMBERS!

In January I have the honor to take over as President of the Nevada Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA). Our organization is strong with 550 members and growing. 2016 is going to be a very exciting year in Nevada. We are witnessing a rebound in our economy. In November we will be asking the voters to approve ballot questions to ensure we are able to design and build roadway projects to keep up with pending growth and avoid becoming a State with congestion problems like our neighbors to the west. As members of APWA it is our challenge to take on a lead role in educating our friends, neighbors, and others on the impor-tance of the ballot questions. I challenge all 550 of you to sign up to speak at your Homeowners Association meetings, church groups, clubs, and other associations to spread the word on supporting transportation infrastructure in Nevada. The economy of our state is closely tied to our ability to move the goods and people of the state. The future economic stability of our region relies heavily on what we do as public works professionals in 2016. At the Chapter Board meeting in September, I asked all Board members to demonstrate a commitment to serving APWA in 2016. I asked my colleagues to put the dates of all board meetings in their calendars now to avoid accidentally scheduling a conflict. As members of APWA, one of the best way we can show support for our industry is coming together as a team and working together to design and build projects in partnerships. One of the best ways to develop and expand these partnerships is through attendance at the APWA conferences. I encourage you to put the dates of out 2016 conferences in your calendar now and start making plans to attend. SPRING CONFERENCE: April 20th through 22nd; Aquarius Hotel, Laughlin, NVFALL CONFERENCE: September 28th through 30th; Harrah’s Hotel, Stateline, NVThese conferences are a great way to reward your hard working staff while at the same time ensuring they earn their continu-ing education requirements. For the members who are decision makers in your organization, I ask you to consider sending the young members of your staff. These people are the future of your organization and it is never too early for them to start build-ing relationships with other individuals in the private and public sectors. The APWA International Congress and Exposition is going to be in Minneapolis this year, on August 28-31. The international conference is always a great experience and educational opportunity. Not to mention, the Nevada Chapter seems to flock together to bring our own brand of fun to the host City. While we are talking about dates, the APWA Southern Branch meets the first Thursday of every month and the Northern Branch meets the third Thursday. Of course there are some exceptions. Visit the Nevada web page at Nevada.apwa.netFinally, I want to hear from you. If you have ideas regarding how APWA Nevada can better serve your organization please let me know. I respond to emails seven days a week. Please contact me at [email protected] or 702.293.9291. -Scott Hansen, Boulder City Public WorksAPWA Nevada Chapter President 2016
