MISSIONSTATEMENTThe mission of the Mississippi Kidney Foundation, chartered in 1965, is to serve Mississippi kidney patients by providing quality programs and services, to provide education and screening to promote the prevention of kidney disease, and to promote organ donation throughout the state.
MISSISSIPPI KIDNEY FOUNDATION
03
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Johnny Maloney, MKF President; Lynda Richards, MKF Director of Patient Services; Gail Sweat, MKF Executive Director; and Lee Parrott, MKF President Elect
Dear Friends:The start of the 50th birthday of your Mississippi
Kidney Foundation has been exciting! A lot of events have gone on behind the scenes to keep the Mississippi Kidney Foundation financially strong, while also helping more patients in need.
We want to say thanks for your participation during this past year at the Michael Rubenstein Kidney Walk, the Pediatric Nephrology Christmas Party at UMMC, the most attended Uptown Drawdown ever (Jerry Rice will try to make the Uptown Drawdown next year!) and the Kidney Patient Picnic at the Ag Museum.
Gail and Lynda have made it possible for the Mississippi Kidney Foundation to help more Mississippians with more free screenings throughout our great state, along with sponsoring our first ever patient conference in Columbus. Gail and Lynda are sparkplugs that make things happen, and we are so lucky to have them on our team.
Being the Mississippi Kidney Foundation, the money we raise in Mississippi stays in Mississippi, and this past year we received a clean bill of health from the Secretary of State’s office.
Lee Parrot, a person of vision, is taking over as president. Lee also is responsible for getting Jerry Rice as our spokesperson. Lee is our MC at the Patient Picnic and cheerleader at the Michael Rubenstein Walk. Please help her anyway you can these next two years.
Thanks for letting me serve as your president, and let’s keep helping Mississippians every day.
Johnny Maloney

EXECUTIVE DIRECTORGail G. Sweat, MS Kidney Foundation
“It has been an honor to be a
part of this organization for the
past 3+ decades, serving as
President during one of those
years. All money raised stays
right here to meet the needs of
Mississipians. The quality and
amount of assistance provided by
our staff and volunteers is truly
remarkable, as kidney disease
is quite prevalent in Mississippi,
and the need is great. It is so
gratifying to be able to help.”
Kent Wilkinson, MKF Board Member,Raymond James Financial
“The Mississippi Kidney Foundation has been an angel in a time of need for my patients.” Dr. Mark Klein, Nephrologist Central Nephrology Associates
“The Mississippi Kidney Foundation is a wonderful organization and makes my job as a social worker much easier. The staff is always helpful and will go out of their way to meet a need that my patients have. They have great ideas for Fundraisers and like to include social workers in their plans.” Marcy Jamison, Social Worker FMC Tupelo & Corinth
“The patient’s health, both emotionally and physically, can be seen in the services you offer. Your Foundation provides “HOPE” that we are able to pass on to the patients and their families. This “HOPE” may be a newsletter, cookbook, t-shirts, calendars, nutritional samples, renal vitamins, financial assistance, and more.” Lynne Curtin, Dietitian Hattiesburg Clinic, Collins, Waynesboro, and
Hattiesburg
Making a Differencewith Concern, Compassion & ResultsMississippi has over 6,000 kidney patients on dialysis, with more being added every day, giving our state one of the highest rates of kidney failure per capita in the nation. As the numbers increase, the Mississippi Kidney Foundation must diligently search for ways and means to provide financial and emotional support for these patients. With the support of our community partners and our wonderful volunteers, we are able to maintain ongoing, active programs and services, tailored to meet the specialized needs of kidney patients and those at increased risk of kidney failure. To that end, every dollar continues to be carefully spent where it can provide the maximum amount of support to those who call on us for help and hope.

The Jerry Rice Kidney Disease Awareness CampaignOur largest ever kidney disease awareness campaign was more successful that we ever dreamed possible. We are fortunate to have the support of Jerry Rice! His message was simple: “Kidney disease runs in families. It can hit any family. I should know. It hit mine. If you have high blood pressure or diabetes, GET TESTED! Call the Mississippi Kidney Foundation and find out when the next free screening will be in your area.” The MS Kidney Foundation has received hundreds and hundreds of phone calls from those at risk, asking when and where the next free screening will be. The Jerry Rice PSAs ran throughout the state; Jerry Rice cards were printed, and there were also Jerry Rice billboards. This year the MS Kidney Foundation was very grateful to receive a donation from Jerry Rice in the amount of $20,000.
Free Screenings for Kidney DiseaseWith the success of the publicity generated by Jerry Rice, many FREE screenings were held, statewide. The screening, entitled REAP (Renal Evaluation and Assessment Program), is designed to target those at risk for kidney disease. Partnering with Quest Diagnostics, tests include a full renal panel, complete blood count and cholesterol check. Additional tests include blood pressure, blood sugar and urinalysis. During our fiscal year (July 1, 2014 – June 30, 2015), we had 20 free screenings for kidney disease and screened 1,610 people.
Are You at Risk? CampaignThe brochure, Kidney Disease: The Silent Disease...Are You at Risk?, is distributed throughout the state with the purpose of educating about kidney disease. Those with risk indicators are encouraged to have the tests that detect early kidney disease. Packaged in bundles of 50, these are available for health fairs, churches and medical clinics.
“I’m a Kidney Fan!” CampaignThese fans, designed to be both educational and useful, are distributed at dialysis units, health fairs, churches, etc. The fans provide information related to taking care of your kidneys, as well as listing the risk factors of kidney disease. Information also stresses that kidney disease runs in families and that family members with a history of kidney disease should be tested. Over 50,000 of these fans have been distributed, statewide, to African American Churches and Health Fairs.

Crisis Intervention FundFunds provide assistance for patient emergencies such as medications, transportation, utilities, food, gasoline, etc. Through the Dialysis Challenge presented by the Annual Walk, dialysis units raise funds in their communities to be used for patients in their units. 1,165 patients were helped with emergency funding during this fiscal year.
Transportation Assistance for Patients (TAP Program)TAP, started in 2013 as a pilot program of the MS Kidney Foundation, has continued to fill an important need. Financial assistance is provided to assist with transportation needs. This is NOT designed for transportation to and from dialysis. It is for transportation needs for patients who need gas money related to emergency access appointments, home dialysis/PD training and/or clinic visits and transplant evaluation travel. 159 people received assistance through TAP.
PROVIDINGEmergency Assistance
The MS Kidney Foundation works closely with over 60 renal social workers, at 80 dialysis units across the state, in an effort to better assess the needs of all dialysis patients.

Nutritional Supplement ProgramIn an effort to address some nutritional needs of end stage renal disease patients, the MKF provides a nutritional supplement to dialysis patients across the state. LiquaCel, a concentrated liquid, is given to patients with dangerously low albumin levels and is administered during their dialysis treatments. This supplement is offered to all 80 dialysis units across the state and has been proven to increase lab values.
Renal Vitamin ProgramThe MKF continues to assist with additional nutritional supplement needs of ESRD patients, specifically with vitamins and minerals. Distributed by the dietitians, the Renaltab II vitamins are designed to counter balance the effects of dialysis and renal specific drugs that may interfere with vitamin absorption and activity.
Southern Comforts of MississippiThis cookbook, provided free of charge, was developed by a team of Mississippi Renal Dietitians and is designed for dialysis patients and their dietary needs. The cookbook is now in its 7th printing. Dialysis patients around the country may purchase the cookbook for $10.
“Binder Reminder” Pill BoxesThe MKF has ordered additional “binder reminder” pill boxes that are specifically designed for carry-along in your pocket or purse. Phosphate binders are pills that dialysis patients must take with each meal to help protect them from absorbing too much phosphate from food and drink.
ADDRESSINGNutritional Needs
The MKF works closely with over 50 renal dietitians, at 80 dialysis units across the state, in an effort to assess the dietary needs of patients on dialysis. The Renal Dietitians of Mississippi have formed a group that meets 2-3 times a year for the purpose of education and networking.
Through the Renal Dietitians of Mississippi, the MKF works closely with the over 50 dietitians that work at the 80 dialysis units in the state.

board since 1979? One reason
and one reason only...THE
PEOPLE. Primarily, the people
we help and serve, but also the
outstanding individuals with
whom I have worked alongside
of all these years. There is not a

Transplant Emergency FundWorking with the transplantation program at the University Medical Center, this fund provides assistance for transplant patients who have emergency needs such as transportation assistance for follow-up clinics and other needs associated with the health and well-being of these transplanted patients.
“Live Organ Donation” CampaignPartnering with the Transplant Department at UMMC, the MS Kidney Foundation has provided a booklet promoting “Live Organ Donation.” The MKF works closely with UMMC, which is the only hospital in the state that performs kidney transplants.
Transplant Tote BagsThe MKF provides large tote bags for transplant patients upon discharge from UMMC.
Kidney Transplant T-ShirtsThe Mississippi Kidney Foundation has created T-shirts that are given to kidney transplant recipients that receive a kidney at UMMC. Designed by Ashley Koehler of mapmystate.com, these shirts are a nice way for the patients to promote the successful transplant program at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

Patient Conference in McComb, MS
Making a Difference with Concern, Compassion & Results
Annual Patient ConferencesDuring this past fiscal year, patient conferences were held in Jackson, McComb and Columbus. The conferences are designed for patients to: be empowered by the knowledge they will receive; to broaden their network of peer support by meeting others; to receive answers to important questions about their care; and to be motivated and inspired! Providing sponsorship were Genentech and Novartis. Speakers included dietitians, social workers, nephrologists, as well as someone from the transplant department at UMC.
“Invest in Your Future” ProgramIn an effort to help Mississippi kidney patients become better equipped to achieve their goals and opportunities through further schooling or employment, the Mississippi Kidney Foundation now offers an incentive program for those who missed out on the chance for a high school diploma. Free GED classes are offered throughout the state; however, the GED exam costs $120.00, and some patients do not have available funds for the exam. MKF will pay the exam fee, and once the patient passes the exam, will give her/him $250.00 to help with further schooling expenses (such as tuition or books) or job-hunting expenses. Eleven patients have now obtained their GED.
Annual Kidney Connection CalendarAn annual calendar, complete with kidney-friendly recipes, helpful facts and highlights of Mississippi patients, is distributed to approximately 11,000 patients and staff members at the dialysis units throughout the state.
Medical Identification JewelryMedical identification bracelets or necklaces are available for kidney patients through the MKF office at a reduced price. Forty (40) patients received medic IDs during the past fiscal year.
Patient Family PicnicAn outgrowth of past support groups, the annual picnic, held each year in Jackson, is a fun time for patients and their families to take a break from dialysis and come together for food, fun and fellowship. This year’s picnic, attended by over 400 people, was held in June at the Mississippi Ag Museum. Food is provided by Catering by George’s, and music is courtesy of Sound Design.
Kidney Patient Connection NewsletterTwice a year, patients throughout the state receive copies of our annual newsletter, The Kidney Patient Connection, through dialysis units. The newsletters contain human interest stories about patients and caregivers, as well as information about the programs and services provided by MKF.

Pediatric Nephrology Holiday PartyThe MKF sponsors an annual holiday party for pediatric nephrology patients at UMMC. Family members are invited to attend, along with their children who are pre-CKD, on dialysis, or transplanted. Gifts and food provide a nice break for these patients during the holiday season. This past year they were entertained by magician Robert Day, and a surprise visit was made by Santa Claus.
FUNdraising OpportunitiesThe Mississippi Kidney Foundation is committed to helping the dialysis units in Mississippi come up with creative ways to generate funds to be used at the units for patient emergencies. This past year, the MKF ordered 5,000 T-shirts with the message, “Dialysis Patients…Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things.” Through this T-shirt project, the dialysis units in MS raised over $20,000; 100% of these funds will be used for patient emergencies. Thank you to our T-shirt sponsors: C Spire, MTM, UMMC Transplant, Newk’s, Forrest General Hospital, Hattiesburg Clinic, BankPlus, MORA, Dr. & Mrs. Otis Gowdy, Jr., and Sharon & Johnny Maloney. And thank you to Ashley Koehler of mapmystate.com for designing the shirt.
Health Fairs/Urinalysis TestingThe MKF attends Health Fairs to promote education of kidney disease. On-site urinalysis testing provides immediate results regarding protein in the urine, which can be an early indicator of kidney disease. Health fairs were conducted at the Jackson Convention Center, the MS State Capitol, the Trade Mart and area churches.
Toll Free NumberTo increase the accessibility for Mississippi kidney patients, the MS Kidney Foundation has a toll free number, 1-800-232-1592.
Speaking EngagementsThe staff of the Mississippi Kidney Foundation spreads the message of the MKF with radio and television interviews, as well as African American Churches and other organizations.
“The patients really enjoy the MKF calendars that are provided each year. The recipes and education segments help the patients learn new things each
month, and the patient spotlight section provides a great deal of encouragement for them.”

Uptown Drawdown GalaThe 21st anniversary celebration of the Uptown Drawdown Gala was held on February 28, 2015, at the Country Club of Jackson. Over 450 guests enjoyed a wonderful evening of fine food and drink, live music provided by the Bluz Boys Band, and a silent auction featuring art and other items. Complimentary photographs were available, compliments of Wiggins Photography. Long-time dialysis patient, Tom Rice, brother of Jerry Rice, presented a generous check from Jerry in the amount of $10,000. At the end of the festivities, four winners split the $10,000 jackpot. Over $150,000 was raised.
Michael Rubenstein Memorial Kidney WalkThe Michael Rubenstein Memorial Kidney Walk on October 4, 2014, was a huge success with beautiful weather and lots of walkers to enjoy the day. Over 50 dialysis units across the state participated by raising funds for their unit through individual fundraisers and soliciting general donations. Those funds are being used as needs arise for patient emergencies, transportation or patient appreciation. Over $100,000 was raised.
