The Commodore's Comments - Commodore Dan Bright
Greetings from the lonely Bridge - with most of the Bridge Officers off enjoying a great cruise to the Carib-bean, those of us left behind have been keeping the ship afloat - ok,
maybe I'm a little jealous.
With the first two months of the year behind us, boating season is not that far away with lots of events/activities to look forward to. The New Member/PC party on March 10th (see invite in mail), monthly Fish-fry, Dart Nite's and a new event - the Meat Raffle on April 7th. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone there.
During the February BOD meeting new Guide-lines for Private Parties were adopted - see a copy on the bulletin board and newsletter.
I hope the membership letter I sent out to everyone was well received. Currently we have three candidates on the board awaiting review and a vote for membership. Please keep those applica-tions coming in and I look forward to meeting our goal for 2018.
The Steward has
asked me to remind
everyone that when

months newsletter will have all the details.
We have a new application on the board, Todd
Choops and his wife Kay. They keep their boat at
Smith Boys. You might have seen them around
the club as they have attended a few of our events.
Awesome couple and will be a great addition to the
club. I believe we will be voting on them at the
March meeting.
Also this month is the new members party on the
10th, come out and enjoy the party and show your
club pride.
So much for this months newsletter as it’s a slow
time of year for us all.

NEWS FROM THE REAR Commodore—Dave Herbold
March comes in like a lion and
out like a lamb, so they say.
I'm so ready for spring! This winter
has been so cold! A few club functions were held in
February, The Turkey dinner was a great success,
the dinner was excellent. hats off to the crew that
made this happen.
Another great super bowl party, The team I was
rooting for even won the game! Thanks to the eve-
ryone involved with making it an excellent party!
IHYC plans on having a booth at this year’s boat
show, hopefully we can get a few new members
out of it. I'm writing this before it happens so next

Alas March has arrived, spring is
in the air? Give me a break it's
been a long winter. I was fortu-
nate to get away from winter for
a little while and charge my
batteries, with any luck I 'll make it thru the season.
The TSA guy in Ft. Lauderdale told me I could bring
all the sunshine back that I wanted. Unfortunately I
could only bring 3 ounces of bright blue sea in my
carry on. I did my best.
We are looking forward to seeing everybody at the
P/C New Members Party on March 10th. Please join
me in supporting Jim Connolly as he spearheads the
meat raffle function. We can use all the help we can
get to make this event successful. With the future
of Canal Fest uncertain a couple of smaller success-
ful functions such as this would be helpful in replac-
ing the revenue with far less labor. Thank you Jim
for stepping up.
Thank you Commodore Dan Bright and P/C Jamie
Schmitt for holding down the fort in my absence. As
for the fort, keep your ears open as we will be
scheduling an inside clean up in the very near fu-
ture
Thank you for your support as always,
V/C Jeremy Schmitt
February is behind us and hopefully
the majority of the cold weather is
too. The Super Bowl was again a
great and successful event and many
thanks to those that attended and helped out. Spe-
cial thanks to Joe Riccio as well as Jay Rowland and
his cooking crew. Speaking of Jay, he put on anoth-
er excellent turkey dinner that had the place
packed!
Flag raising plans are in the beginning stages and a
band has already been secured for the Red Flannel
party (no, it will not be TOAST). March brings us the
monthly (and Lenten) fish fry and the P/C & New
Members party. Help support your club with these
events.
Now if you’ll excuse me I have to go write a Fish Fry
article.

into the register, the bar receipts for the last sever-
al months have been off. A friendly reminder that
the barroom camera's are still active.
On a sad note, former member P/C Eric Olandt
has passed on. I never had the pleasure to meet this
gentleman but was told during his time he was a
great member and friend to many at IHYC, he will be
missed. Finally, if you haven't attended a mem-
bership meeting in a while I encourage you to do so
- please remember, this is YOUR club and your par-
ticipation is expected and welcomed.

From Your President All I can say is WOW it’s cold outside! February was a quiet month around the club. I will chalk it up to the weath-er. Hopefully it will turn around soon. Upcoming events are fish fry March 2nd. Pie/dessert donations are always welcome. March 10th is the PC/new
members party. Dig out your favorite appetizer/hors d’oeuvres recipe and come out to welcome our new members. We have decided on the Russell’s over night package for our annual fund raiser. If every member sells 5 books, we will sell out. We are looking for a chair person; please contact me if you are interested. I would like to issue a challenge to all the members, donate a little of your time for the good of the club. Tasks go quicker with more hands. There are light duty jobs that are just as important as all the heavy lifting. Be sure to participate if you cannot volun-teer. Attend the monthly meetings. This will ensure the contin-ued success of our events and our club. You are spending time with friends and having a few beverages, it is a win/win. Please remember our “Drop Anchor” membership drive. Chat up
the club to all your friends and family. Our next meeting is March 20th please plan on attending.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
Your President

2018 Turkey Dinner - 22 turkeys were cooked, the club-house was packed and we served 200+ dinners. It was great to see so many faces that we haven’t seen since the 2017 boating season ended.
A big thank you to all of you who donated, set up, baked, prepared, carved, participated, bar tended, served, bused, dish washed and contributed in any way. We couldn’t have pulled this event off without your continued support and participation.

February was better than I anticipated and it was
good to see some familiar faces. Hopefully the Len-
ten season will bring out some more of our mem-
bers, friends, and family. Team 3 is next up and we
need to keep them busy.
Speaking of Team 3, there are several openings that
need to be filled so please contact me if you would
like to help out. To date only one team has given
me their team captains. Please have your team de-
cide on their representative and contact me.
2018 will absolutely be my last year as Fish Fry
Chairman. Due to a change at my job I may have
less time to dedicate to this and would be willing to
relinquish my position at any point this year. So
please consider stepping up and taking on the duties
of one of our biggest club fundraisers. The sooner
someone decides to take it on, the sooner I can work
with that individual to make for an easy transition.
Thank you,
Eric “Toast” Mowry

5 Tips to Stay Safe
When Checking Up on the Boat This Winter
ANNAPOLIS, Md., February 1, 2018 – “Boating safety” usually means preventing injuries or accidents while on the water. Boats in winter storage have some unique safety concerns for boat owners who make periodic checkups over the long winter season. Here are five tips from the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water to help boaters stay safe while visiting the boat this winter.
1. Injuries from ladder falls can be severe but are preventable. When using a ladder to climb aboard your frozen boat, be sure it is firmly planted, secure it with a line to avoid shifting, and have someone hold the base. Never descend a ladder facing forward or with your arms full. If moving tools, supplies or other objects to and from the deck, lower or raise them in a bucket using a rope.
2. Don’t trust the nonskid to do its job. Nonskid decks are slippery when covered by snow or encrusted with ice. Brush away any buildup on the deck where you plan to step, and always hold onto something, just as you would if you were underway. In warmer winter climates, decaying leaves and algae can also make decks slippery.
3. Snow and ice are heavy. One square foot of dense, wet snow can weigh more than 20 pounds, so use caution when going underneath a tarp or winter cover that’s loaded with snow. For even a small boat stored outside, over a ton of weight can be added after a storm, so brush off what you can before climbing aboard.
4. Check your jackstands for proper support. Jackstands or blocking can shift as the boat gets laden with snow and ice, or due to repeated freeze/thaw cycles. Never adjust jackstands yourself. Have marina personnel adjust and move supports.
5. Trailer boat frames should be supported at the rear cross beam. This prevents the tongue from lifting off the ground like a seesaw when climbing aboard from the stern.
