Constable William Mason Coull (27) married with no children, a native of Aberdeen, stationed at Newtownbutler was electrocuted at a Newtownbutler garage while working on his own car. The inquest was told of the two hour long efforts of Dr. John O’Neill, goalkeeper of the

Fermanagh All-Ireland team, to revive the victim using oxygen and artificial respiration.

600116 A gentle and lovable little boy Paul Francis Mc Nameee, of Belmore St. Enniskillen, died from head injuries sustained in a fall on stairs at his home on Tuesday morning.

600123 Arthur Guinness and Sons have entered into contracts to take 745,000 barrels of next year’s Irish barley crop. Before the war most of their needs were met from South America suddenly Ireland had to become self-sufficient and hence the huge rise in the acerage of Irish-grown barley.

600130 Ederney Publican’s wife Mrs Rose A. Eves of New Street, Ederney, was fined £15 for serving drink on Christmas Day. She said that she did not think it any harm to serve them on Christmas Day. Her husband James was fined £5. Those on the premises, James Gillespie, Cahore, Ederney, Fred Mc Farland, Market St., Ederney were fined £3 and Edward Mc Manus, Killycappy, John Monaghan, Edenclaw and Fred Mc Girr, 8 Camowen Cottages, Omagh were fines £2 each. Sergeant Johnston carried out the raid on the premises.

600213 Fermanagh County Education Committee expressed themselves in favour of INTO motions calling for classes to be no larger than 30 pupils and all schools to have playing grounds.

600220 New Ederney Co-Operative Attested Sales mart. Farmers join in £4,000 scheme. Arguments have gone on between the promoters of the new marts and defenders of the old Fair Days but the Cattle Marts have come and the Fairs have gone. Almost the last of the fairs were held in Ederney and Belleek until about two years ago. Ederney had one of the best fairs in Fermanagh with about 200 animals on the street at the monthly fair. Last year a fair was held with only six animals, the end had come. Mr. Frank Traynor, Meenmore designed Ederney Mart and the work was carried out by local man, Mr. Patrick Mc Veigh. About 250 people have subscribed capital but they are still about £1,000 short of the required amount. Among those advertising in the paper to mark the Mart opening is James M. Eves, New Street, Ederney, seller of leading brands of wines and spirits and stockist of fourteen different types of beer. Phone Kesh 234.

600227 “It seems an awful thing to send people like this to prison” said Justice Lavery at Clones when he imposed a fine of £100 on a young man James Reilly, Kilready, Newtownbutler, in a case taken by the Revenue Commissioners for smuggling a T.V. set. As the young man was unable to pay even a reduced penalty he elected to go to prison for six months.

600227 A row in an Orange Hall at Dernasesk ends in Kesh Court when Stanley Chittick, Rotten Mountain, Kesh, summonsed Thomas Boyd, Corlave, Kesh for

assault. Boyd was fined 10/- but claimed that he had struck and removed Chittick from the hall for throwing cups and sods in the hall.

600227 A verdict of death due to natural causes was returned at the inquest of Hugh Gallagher, aged about 60 of Dernacross, Belleek, who was found lying dead in a field on 27th January last. Gallagher was unmarried and lived with a Mr. Vincent Greenan, Dernacross.

600227 Derrylin man, Matt Gilroy is honoured by the American Government and follows the like of President Eisenhower in being awarded the Panamanian Grand Cross and Diploma in recognition of his services to Humanity. Along with friends Pat Hughes and Joe Mc Parland of Newry he was the founder of Uranium City in North Saskatchewan having discovered there, the precious uranium, which is now, in this atomic age, the most precious metal of all. His father John, who died aged 80, and mother Mary A., still a sprightly 78, reared a family of nine at Aughyoule, Derrylin of which Matt was the eldest. 600227 Many farmers and buyers attended the opening sale of the Ederney Co-Operative Attested Sales Mart despite the bad weather and the treacherous condition of the roads. There was a large number of cattle on view and bidding was brisk.

The baby is the first to be born to a reighning sovereign for 102 years; since the birth of Princess Beatrice, last of Queen Victoria’s nine children on April 14th, 1857. 600227 The worst snowstorm to hit the Pettigo area in 13 years came on Monday 15th

last. Snow continued to fall until Friday afternoon and gale-force winds whipped the snow into drifts up to six and seven foot deep. The mail failed to reach Pettigo on Thursday and grocery vans were unable to travel. Pettigo monthly fair was one of the smallest ever remembered as few animals were able to be driven to the village.

600305 The death is reported of Mrs C. Gormley, Magheramena House, Belleek. She was a member of the old respected Grayson family before her marriage and was

predeceased a few weeks previously by her brother Patrick Grayson. She was mother of Sister Mary Francis de Sales, St. Mary’s Hospital, Castleblaney and of Sister Mary Francis Xavier, Convent of Mercy, Enniskillen.

600430 At the Annual GAA Congress it was passed by a narrow two-thirds majority to allow the goalkeeper to lift the ball off the ground in the parallelogram and players were again freed to move the ball from one hand to another, “selling a dummy.” “Traditionalists” defeated a motion to allow goalies to wear a distinctive jersey. Only Irish is used at Ulster Central Council Meetings but when a proposal to do likewise at Central Council was made by Tyrone it waas greeted by an embarassing silence. No one spoke other than the proposer and seconder.

600430 The death occurred in the Shiel Hospital, Ballyshannon, of Mr. Michael Dawson, Customs Preventative Officer, Pettigo, for the past twelve years. He had been ill for some months. In the fight for freedom, Mr. Dawson, a native of Mountcharles, served with the 1st Northern Division and joined the Customs service in 1924.

600528 At Pettigo Court, former Ballyshannon Town Clerk, Patrick O’Doherty, Cluan Barron, Ballyshannon was given a six months suspended sentence on four charges of fraud to the value of £50-4-8.

600528 New Fermanagh County Council Building opened in East Bridge Street by the 80 year old Chairman of the Council, Earl of Enniskillen. The building cost £58,000 and was built by the local firm of A. J. Humphries.

600604 Speaking to a crowded congregation in St. Patrick’s Church, Derrygonnelly, Bishop Eugene O’Callaghan warned against the dangers of evil literature. He was administering the sacrament of Confirmation to almost 300 children drawn from the nine schools of the Parish. He appealed to them to read only good Catholic newspapers and magazines, not merely the purely religious magazines, but the paperrs and productions which were permeated by a Catholic atmosphere and which showed judgment and restraint in reporting events and selectivity in chosing material for publication which was so much in contrast with the unrestrained and unrestricted coverage of many imported newspapers which apparenlty loved to wallow in the mire of sex and sordidness. His warning was particularly significant in the Northern part of his diocese.

600618 The film “Mise Eire” was shown to two packed houses in Lisnaskea. Head Constable Montgomery and eight men were on duty on account of notices calling for a loyalist protest meeting against, “a Papist effort to corrupt the minds of Loyalist youths.”

600618 The Lough MacNean Development Association have been told that over a dozen locally made boats were almost ready for launching in a bid to develop fishing on the lake.

600618 A B-Special, 34 year old Joseph Magill and three of his children died in a shooting incident in Ballinahinch. His wife who had also been shot raised the alarm. He was a resident member of the guard on the home of Brian Faulkner, Minister of Home Affairs. A neighbour heard one of the children shout, “Don’t Daddy Don’t.”

600618 At Irvinestown Rural District Council Mr. P. J. Casey, said that conditions were serious at present and Garrison was in urgent need of a sewage scheme.

600702 In a Brookeborough lake tragedy two young men, Austin Healy and Gerard Durnien were drowned. They had been swimming in Knocks Lough.

600702 Robin Knox, a fifteen year old Enniskillen boy was rescued from Lough Erne by 17 year old Paul Burns and 16 year old Kevin Morris while they were swimming at Holly Island, Enniskillen. Mrs M. Black presented both boys with a wristlet watch as a gesture of thanks.

600702 On Friday July 8th Garrison’s splendid new attested salesyard is to open. It is to be unique in Ireland as it is to be conducted on the lines of the old fair days. It has cost about £2,000 collected by public subscription. Mr Patrick Carty, contractor erected the new facility. Dealers and farmers will bid and bargain as in days of old.

600709 The death has occurred of John Percy Johnston of Tullyhommon, Pettigo at the untimely age of 51 years. He was a popular garage owner. A cortege of 200 cars followed his funeral to Sydare Cemetery.

600716 There was much police activity on both sides of the border following a bank robbery in the Bundoran Branch of the Bank of Ireland.

600716 The death has occurred in Clones, County Monaghan of Rev. James Canon Marron in his 99th year. He was a native of Corduff, County Monaghan. Few priests in Ireland have had a more colourful and distinguished and exciting life having emigrated to the United States after teaching in Ireland. He worked at the building of the Brooklyn Bridge and later in Leadsville, Colorado where he got a job with his brother Owen in a gold smelting establishment. He became an expert horseman in the Rocky Mountains and back as a priest in Ireland in later life he continued to visit his scattered rural parishes on horseback and was over 80 when he hung up his saddle. His brother was attacked and killed in Leadsville and soon after he decided to return to Ireland to become a priest. He was renouned as a man who gave all his personal money to charities and the poor of his parish. He visited the working class arreas of his parish at Christmas each year and irrespective of religion gave at least £1 and where their were big families he would give £4. His funeral was one of the biggest ever seen in the parish.

600716 Mr. Thomas Mayers of Ballydoolagh, Enniskillen, has killed 12 crows with one shot. It is believed that this is a record.

600723 Senator John F. Kennedy is to be the youngest ever candidate for American President at the age of 43 years.

600723 The deeds of Saint’s Island, Lough Derg have been handed over to Dr. Eugene O’Callaghan, Bishop of Clogher in a ceremony on the island.

600723 Gardai prosecute Bundoran entertainers, Ron and Vera Page of the “Fun Palace” for an indecent exhibition of slot machine pictures. These were pictures of scantily clad ladies in a machine which cost 3d to operate and which was labelled, “For Men Only.”

600723 In London the top prize of 380 guineas was paid for a greyhound puppy, “Changing Weather” the property of Mr. Tommy Mc Crossan, Main St. Irvinestown.

600730 Twenty year old Enniskillen barman, Brian Curtiss, Oghill, Ederney was killed in a motorcycle accident near Enniskillen. The accident happened on a straight stretch of road as he was hurled under a parked van which had been involved in an accident earlier.

600730 Bundoran Races will take place on Tullan Strand on Wednesday August 3rd. The first race will be at 3 p.m. and the Army Band will attend – Admission 2/6.

600730 Pilgrimage Island, Lough Derg is to get electricity from the mainland. An underwater cable over a half a mile long will bring current at 10,000 volts and this will be converted to 220 volts by the transformer station on the island. Up to the present electricity has been supplied by a small plant on the island.

600806 Mr. Peter F. Gilligan, Cowpark, Garrison has retired from the Postal Service in Garrison after 49 years having covering an estimated 250,000 miles – the distance from the Earth to the Moon. He began work on August 14th, 1911 with a salary of 3s-6d weekly. He walked his rounds from 1911 to 1920 and then cycled for the next 30 years. He was presented with a transistor radio, radio table and a record player.

600806 The Lord Bishop of Clogher has ordered that a prayer for fine weather be said at all the masses said in the Diocese.

600813 Belleek fair is to be revived on August 19th and opened by William T. Mc Clintock, Fermanagh County Agricultural Executive Officer. It has been built by Mr. Patrick Carty, Garrison and will hold 350 to 400 animals. It will be run on the lines of the old fair days with buyers and sellers reaching their own agreements. Belleek Fair used to be one of the best in the northwest and survived the cutting off of part of its hinterland with the setting up of the Border and the severe blow of the ending of the railways in Fermanagh. It is centrally situated on the Main Street alongside the

premises of Mr. T. Daly who is also secretary of the local committee which has set up this facility.

600813 A £45,000 water supply scheme has been approved for Belcoo and a similar scheme costing £70,000 has been approved for Roslea. Semage schemes have been discussed at Irvinestown Rural District Council for Lack, Ederney and Garrison.

600813 Kerry beat Fermanagh 2-10 to 0-8 in Irvinestown in the semi-final of the “Gaelic Weekly” Tournament in Kerry’s first ever game in the Six-Counties.

600820 From Enniskillen 80 years ago came the smallest ever Irishman to win a gold medal. He was Robert Kerr who was just 5ft-6ins and weighed just under 10 stone. He was born in Enniskillen in 1882 but his family emigrated to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in 1886. At the London Olympics in 1908 he had his heart set on winning the 100 metres but got a bad start and finished third. He took a break and went on a late night out in London and then won the 200 metres without training. At a victory dinner in Dublin afterwards he said he regretted that he had not won his gold medal for Ireland and came back the following year and represented Ireland in the annual international athletics match against Scotland where he won both the 100 and 200 metres.

Won British Championship 100 and 200 Yds.1908 and Harvey memorial Gold Cup for best performanceCanadian Champion Sprinter 1905 to 1910. He attended 4 Olympic Games - 1904 in St Louis as a competitor1908 in London as a competitor, 1928 Amsterdam as an Official and 1932 Los Angeles as an official. Born in Enniskillen Ireland on June 1882. His parents George ( + Jan 27, 1918) and Rebecca (+ Jan 19, 1918)Bobby attended school in Hamilton Public Schools: Wentworth, Victoria ave, Queen Victoria. He was a Salesman for Duncan Lithographing Co.Was enlisted in the army during WWI joined the 205th Battalion, transferred to the 164th battalion, he went overseas with them and was later absorbed in the 5th division. Bobby married to Ida Patterson on June 7, 1922. When Kerr died in 1963 at age 81, Ivan Miller, sports director of the Hamilton Spectator, wrote, Oldtimers will remember with deep nostalgia the torch light parades that welcomed Bobby back from conquest after conquest, and they'll miss the modesty that set apart a man who just did his best.

Patterson at a Lisnaskea Rural District Council meeting when a letter was read out from Norman Lee, tenant of a council house in Lisnaskea. He said he had erected a television aerial on a tree, the property of the council, and wished to keep it there permanently. He had cut off the top of the tree without permission and was ordered to remove his aerial.

600917 Several hundred people gathered at Corracloon, near Kiltyclogher on the shores of Lough MacNean for the blessing and launching of 14 locally built boats. They will be available for locals and tourists.

670225 The body of missing Roscor farmer and forestry worker, James Greene is found in Lough Erne by two Belleek constables. The 37 year old man has been missing since 12th. January when police began a search and dredged the lake for his body. The body was seen floating close to the bank at the mouth of a little stream two miles from Roscor Viaduct and one and a half miles from Belleek. Constables David Rae and Shaun Turner were the ones to find the body. The funeral took place on Sunday at Derrygonnelly where the deceased was originally from.

670520 Mrs. Margaret Keown, Roscor Post Office, gave evidence at the inquest into the death of 43 year old James McNulty, of Largan Roscor, Belleek. It was found that McNulty was killed by his neighbour, James Greene on January 12th. Thomas James Gormley, who found the body said that he saw McNulty foddering some cattle around 10.am. in his shed, and a little further down the lane, he saw Greene walking with tools over his shoulder. As he walked on, then looked over his shoulder, he saw Greene and Mrs. Keown the Postmistress talking to each other. On his returning he knew that McNulty had not foddered his other cattle since they were roaring, and he could no longer see Greene. When he came across McNulty’s body on his back on the grass verge, he realised he was dead and then ran 200 yards to McManus’s house. There had previously been a dispute between the Greenes and the McNulty’s about an iron gate at the end of Greene’s land.

670708 A Derry policeman who was stationed in Belleek for 18 months until about three years ago owes his life to an Enniskillen girl who saved him from drowning. Sergeant Martin Finlay and his brother-in-law Kenneth Thompson from Coleshill, Enniskillen, went out for a dip on the sunny Saturday afternoon at 4.30 pm. in the waves off Bundoran. Mr. Thompson drew his brother-in-law’s attention to a man who was about 30 yards away and who was shouting for help. At first they thought it was a joke, but then they went to investigate. The tide was going out and there was a strong pull under the water. Even though they managed to reach 26 Mark Conway, who was from Castlederg, they could make no progress against the current. Mr. Thompson went for help, and Miss Cassidy went to assist the two men. Martin Finlay was passing out by the time she got to the scene. Miss Cassidy and her sister rescued him and took him back to shore, where he recovered. However, when they went back to find Mark Conway, he had disappeared.

A County Down man is in critical condition after getting entangled in the wires and burning himself severely.
