General Robert R. Neyland, Athletic Director and Head Football
Coach opened his l Tth season this year at The University of Tennes-
see. He was born in Greenville, Texas in t 892 and was Captain of foot-
ball, baseball, and basketball while in high school. He was appointed
to West Point in t 91 2 where he was an outstanding athlete. 'After
graduating from West Point, he went to France in \gl7 and at the
end ef the war h€ reeeived his B;,S. degree at M.l.T. and then re-
turned to West Point as aide-de-carnp to General Douglas McArthur.t n | 926, Creneral Neyland became Head Coach at The University of
Tennessee and in hls 17 yeers has built a necsrd that is pr^babl
unequaled in feotball coaching circtes. Eefore the beg,ln'nirg @'+ this
season, he had I 34 wins, 20 tosses, and 9 ties and was invited to three
major "Bo\ryls."
Dur-ing Wor$d War ll, Cwneral Neyland served five years in the
Army, his iast service being in China where he was Cormrnanding Gen-

DAAN BAI TMU CSAOIICoach Dean Bailey is beginning his first year as
Coach of Athletics at L.M.U. He was graduated fromEast Tennessee State College in 1934 with the B.S. de-gree, with a ma jor in General Science and lndustrialArts and a minor in Physica I Education. He re-civd his master's degree in physical education at Col-umbia University, New York City in .l938. As anunder graduate he worfi four letters in basketball, base-ball and football. He was captain of each sport andwas selected on the All Smoky Mountain ConferenceTeam. He was President of the student body in hissenior year and was student representative on the Stu-dent Activities Committee
Coach Bailey has had a successful career. He wasCoach of basketball, baseball and football in theMa ryville, Tennessee H igh School f rom I 934 to I 93 5,
and in Lenoir City High School from 1935 to 1941 .
He was Principal of Lenoir City High School from1940 to 1941
Coach Bailey entered the United States Navy inJanuary 1942 and was discharged in 1946 as Lieuten-ant Commander. During his services in the Navy, hewas Officer in Charge of Athletics in the Navy RadioSchool, Texas A and M; Navy V -12 Unit, Universityof Pennsylvania, and a Baihbridge, Maryland. He wasalso Staff Welfare and Recreation Officer, PhilippineSea Frontier He had an extensive and varied exper-ience in the field of phy'sical education while he wasin the Navy.
Coach Bailey comes to L.M.U.. with the good wishesof a I I who know h im. As the f i rst coach in the newphysical education building, he has the opportunity ofdevelo'ping athletics to the fullest.

Coach Emmett Lowery initiates his second seasonas head mentor of the Tennessee basketball team. WithCoach Lowery at the reins, Tennessee last year concluded one of the most successful basketball seasonsin its athletic history. Not only was Coach Lowerynew on the " Hill" , but to make the odds greater, heintroduced the " f a st-brea k" type of p lay. When theseason had been completed, the Volunteers had theamazing record of 21 wins in 26 games played. lnthe Southeastern Conference race, the Vols finishedthrrd with only two losss.
Although Lowery had only one regular from the'46-'47 squad ret.urning for the '47 -'48 season, hetook a qroup of determined young players and by theseason's end had developed a team that was the terrorof the SEC
Coach Lowery came to Tennessee directly fromPurdue where he assisted the noted Big-N ine coach,Ward P Lambert. He came to Tennessee with an out-standinq record and reputation. Before serving atPurdue, he coached at several different schools in the
Mid-West where he or oduced outstanding teams and anumber of conference championship tearns.
Whil attending Purdue as a student, Lowery playedregular end for two years on the football team whichwon the Big-Ten title in 1931 and were undefeated in1932. As a guard on the Purdue basketball team, hemade the All B ig-Ten and All American Basketballteams, which helped Pur due to Big-Ten titles in the1931 -32, and 1933-34 seasons. The 1933,34 teamset the all-time Big-Ten scoring reeprd. He was alsolndiana intercolleqiate state tennis champion at Purdue.
Coach Lowery pent 3 0 months in the service, I 5of these being overseas. He was in Naval Aviation.He is married and has a lO-year-old son, and lives inHighland Hills. His other duties at Tennessee ar'e-assisting in football and scouting.
Coach Lowery soent 3 0 months in the service, I 5self ,as one of the nation's top basketball coaches, butevery Vol supporter who has seen his team in actionhas been solidlv sold on the 'fast-breakl' typu of basket-ba ll. The ' 48-' 49 edition of the Volunteers shouldprove to be a team that will not only draw increasingsupport from its follower, but will be watched even moreclosely by is opponents.
