GJorewordTo the members of the various Masonic Institutions:

In past years the Masonic Lodge has occasion-ally published a booklet at the close of the yeargiving a detailed report of the year's business thenames of the officers for the past year, a l~t ofthe Past Masters and a complete roster of all mem-bers. The last book of this nature was printed in1920, and was in celebration of the Fiftieth Anni-versary of Emporia Lodge No. 12. During the year1946 the question of publishing a roster was die-cussed in the lodge and it was suggested that theother bodies be invited to join the lodge and getout a roster of all Masonic bodies. This wasaccordingly submitted to each of the other bodieswho took heartily to the proposition. '

The following organizations, which are affiliatedwith Masonry in Emporia, and enjoy fraternalfellowship, and have a part in this booklet are:Emporia Lodge No. 12 A. F. & A. M., EmporiaChapter No. 12 R. A. M., Emporia Council No. 7R. & S. M., Emporia Commandery NO.8 K. T., TheMasonic Low 12 Club, Emporia High Twelve ClubMiriam Chapter No. 14 O. E. S., Emporia AssemblyNo. 31 S. O. O. B., Emporia Bethel No.4 Order ofJob's Daughters, Lyon County Scottish Rite ClubEmporia Arab Shrine Club. '

The keynote of Masonry is friendship andbrotherly love. Will you not, as you look throughthis booklet, resolve, "that in the future you willpractice these commendable virtues to the fullestextent?" Thus, and thus only, will we maintainthe high standards of Masonry.

During the time the last roster was printed andup to the present time, many of our members haveanswered the summons of the Grand Master ofthe Universe and many new members have beenadded to the roll. December 31, 1946 finds ourMasonic Temple Building free of debt, this eventwas celebrated on February 21, 1947.

Emporia Lodge No. 12, A. F. & A. Jl1.

The Emporia Masonic Lodge came into existencein January 1858,with the small group of men, whohad received the degrees of Ancient Craft Masonryin other states, and no sooner did they reach thelittle hamlet of Emporia, than they began to gatherin groups and discuss the feasibility of forming aLodge. On January 15, 1858,eight of these men metto organize. The location of the meeting was un-known. They immediately signed a pesition to theTerritorial Grand Lodge for a dispensation, andone of the band mounted his horse and rode thelong dreary trail to Leavenworth to secure thecoveted authority. As to where the first Home ofEmporia Lodge was, History is silent. History in-forms us these brethren met frequently for instruc-tion and communion, one with another.

Accessions to the Lodge, both by initiation andaffiliation were rapid and by September 1860, theLodge reached a membership of thirty-eight. Andso they kept going as Emporia Lodge No. 12, U. D.,until September 12, 1861, when the members en-listed in the Army, and with a prayer in theirhearts and on their lips, marched away to defendtheir country.

No rurther record was found of a meeting untilMay 28, 1863, when its was once more organized asa Lodge U. D, At this time arrangements weremade to rent the building at the corner of Seventhand Commercial. One of the officers was sent toTopeka with the arrearages of Grand Lodge dues, and a request that Emporia Lodge No, 12 be re-stored to good standing. Our representative nothaving sufficient notice of this meeting, and thetrails being bad, he did not arrive in Topeka untilGrand Lodge had closed for the year. However, theGrand Master issued a dispensation for the year1863-64, and at a meeting of Grand Lodge in 1864,our present Charter was issued under the date ofDecember 31, 1864, and now hangs on the wall ofour Temple building.

[ 10 ]

The meetings of the Lodge at that time wereheld in a little frame Shack, and the furnrture con-sisted of three crude unfinished wooden tables, three chairs of the same make, a dry goods box foran Altar, rough pine benches for seats, homemaderods for Deacons and a few homemade candlesticks.

Masonry continued to flourish, and EmporiaLodge No. 12 to grow. By the close of 1865 themembership was 46. December 24, 1868 the Lodgemoved into the third floor over the bank of Jolu).R. Swallow & Company, and entered a three yearlease, Later the Lodge secured more commodiousquarters in the third story of what is now theEmporia State Bank.

The years from 1868 to 1881,passed rapidly andpeacefully, the lodge keeping pace with the growthof the town, doing what it could toward makingEmporia a better place to live.

At the regular meeting held on June 3, 1881,Brother Charles W. Cleaver moved that thelodge appoint a committee of three to inquire intothe advisability of securing a location, and buildinga Masonic Temple. The committee reported, at thenext meeting, they had an offer of a site, at thesoutheast corner of Fifth and Merchant, to bedonated by Calvin Hood and his associates providedthe Lodge would build a three story brick building.

The cuntract was awarded to E. F, Sprague, for$17,039.60,exclusive of the foundation which wasbuilt by L. W. Lewis. Emporia Lodge moved intoits new quarters early in 1883.

Today the Lodge is third owner of a magnificentTemple building, 100x75 feet, three stories high, with reading rooms, club rooms and all the modernup-to-date conveniences of ow' time. The member-ship now totals 906.

Meels the first aud third Fridays of each nioutb,W'ork in some of the degrees every MOllday night,

Emporia Commandery No. 8

The first movement toward creating EmporiaCommandery No.8, Knights Templar, took placeMarch 28, 1875, when L. D. Jacobs, H. C. Cross,Almerin Gilett, J. C. Bennett, W. W. Hibben, J. C.Watson, Noyes Spicer, J. K. Finley, D. Holderman,Ca.lvin Hood, Paul Jones and E. Nichols met andstarted the preliminary work towards organizingthe Commandery.

On April 17, they reported they had exemplifiedthe work at Topeka and a dispensation was issuedto them, and Emporia Commandery U. D., wasthen organized with the following as the regularofficers, under the dispensation: Luther D. Jacobs,Eminent Commander; Hiram D. Cross, Gener-alissimo; Almerin Gilett, Captain General; JamesC. Bennett, Senior Warden; Thomas C. Watson,Junior Warden.

We have been honored with the highest markof esteem the Grand Commandery could confer,Eminent Sir J. Jay Buck having been elected toGrand Commander in 1887,Eminent Sir Robert E.Torrington was Grand Commander in 1895, Emi-nent Sir Charles G. West was Grand Commanderin 1930, and Roy Wilford Riegle as the presentGrand Commander for 1947. The Commandery hashad the honor of having membership on many im-portant committees as the years have passed. Em-poria has also been honored by entertaining theGrand Commandery of Kansas several times, in1879,1884,1911,1924,1927,1931,1938,1940and 1945.

In looking over the minutes of our meetings, avery interesting item was noted in the minutes ofMarch 25, 1921,which reads as follows: The matterof the Drill team was brought up and discussed, especially the lack of interest in this part of ouractivities, and a team of Commanders and PastCommanders was suggested, should the rank andfile not get into the harness, and put this Com-mandery on the map.

[ 41 1

Page 23: 1946 Emporia Kansas Masonic Roster & Report

The minutes seemed to be the one that startedthe ball to rolling; plans were immediately startedto organize a drill team which has since developedinto one of the greatest drill teams in the State.Since that time the team has won 19 firsts, onesecond and five thirds in the State Conclaves. In1928 the team won seventh place at Detroit, in theTriennial Conclave, in 1931 they received fourthplace at Minneapolis, in 1934 they received secondplace at San Francisco and again in 1937 they re-ceived second place at Cleveland.

In checking over the records and minutes of thepast seventy-one years, many items of interest arenoted, but it is impossible to numerate them all inthe short space allotted for us. During these yearsour Commandery has grown from a small Com-mandery to one of the outstanding Commanderiesin the State, and is known all over the UnitedStates.

Emporia Commandery No. 8 is one of the veryfew who confer the Order of Malta in full form. This degree alone uses special robes and equipmentpurchased at a cost of $750.00which is used for thisdegree only.

Order of the Eastern Star

Miriam Chapter No. 14, Order of the EasternStar, was organized June 22, 1876, in Jay's Hall, located at Fifth and Commercial Streets.

Deputy Grand Patron H. G. Reynolds, appoin~edby Grand Patron Robert McCoy of New York, ill-

stituted the Chapter. There were thirty-seven charter members, sev-

enteen Sisters and twenty Brothers. A Charter wasissued to the Chapter, and after being signed, themeeting adjourned until October.

The Chapter room was ornamented with Mottos, and furnished with a Bible, an organ, a smallpedestal, a high backed desk, and a number ofchairs. A central hanging coal 011 lamp and fourwall bracket lamps lighted the room.

The next event of importance was a call forthe Grand Chapter to meet in Emporia, on October18 1876 the same date the Masonic Grand Lodgew~s cailed. Hotel accommodations at that timewere inadequate for a large gathering, and every-one opened their homes, and gave cheerful wel-come to any representative of this Fraternal Order.Forty-two of the eighty Chapters were represented.

After the election of a President and Secretary, the Constitution Regulations and Jurisprudence ofthe Sovereign Grand Chapter of the Order of theEastern Star of Kansas were submitted and adopt-ed. The meetings were to be held on the sameday as the Masonic Grand Lodge meetings, andwere to convene at 7 P. M. Immediately followingthe business session, this energetic little GrandBody opened the Grand Chapter of Kansas, withfull ceremonies, with the officers of Miriam Chapterin the chairs.

Sister Mary Helper of Ft. Scott was chosen asthe First Worthy Grand Matron of Kansas. SisterMary Buck, Miriam Chapter's firsb Worthy Matron, was Worthy Grand Matron in 1879.

All of the above named Brothers are Past Patronsof Miriam Chapter.

The Golden Anniversary of Miriam Chapterwas celebrated in a fitting manner, June 22, 1926.

The Chapter has a membership of over 850members, and its finances are in excellent condi-tion. In contrast to the early day equipment, theChapter sessions are held in the large and beau-tiful Masonic Lodge room, with ample floor andstage space. The fixtures include an electric signet,a full set of electric pedestals, and an altar, andone-half interest in a grand piano.

There is an active interest among the membersin ohaptei: affairs evidenced by well attendedmeetings and the maintaining of a high degree ofproficiency in the work of the officers.

We rejoice that the goal set by these pioneersof Miriam Chapter is being realized. May we notonly attain the high standard set for us but letour aim be higher and the goal worth while.

Social Order of the Beauceant

Emporia Assembly was constituted in 1923 thethirty-first assembly to be affiliated with' theNational Assembly, and we are known as EmporiaAssembly No. 31, of the Socia.! Order of theBeauceant of the World.

We were organized by Mrs. John M. Parringtonand Mrs. Harry E. Peach, wives of Sir Knights ingood standing in Emporia Commandery.

Supreme Officers of Beauceant came from Den-ver, Kansas City, Lawrence, Newton, Pratt, andother cities to install and instruct us in ow' cere-monies. Our membership increased rapidly in thefirst two years until we numbered about one hun-dred fifty-three members. We have graduallyincreased to more than two hundred at the presenttime. During this time the officers were furnishednew robes, altar paraphernalia and ballot box werepurchased.

In om third year a fund was started for thepurchase of a new piano. Two years later, in 1928,the Beauceant and Eastern Star bought and paidfor om new Chickering grand piano, for the lodgeroom, which all Masonic groups are free to use andenjoy.

Perhaps our most glamorous year was 1935,when we entertained the National Assembly ofthe Beauceant of the World. We were assisted byseven Hostess Assemblies, Newton, Wichita, Well-ington, Winfield, Hutchinson, Pratt, Kansas, andJoplin, Mo. Om President, Mrs. E. J. Lewis, wasmade general chairman of the National meeting. With the help and courtesies showered upon us bythe Hostess Assemblies, our own Masonic bodiesEmporia Chamber of Commerce, Florists, Willia~Allen and Mrs. White, and so many others the

[ 66 1

work was made easy and it was a wonderfulmeeting.

The Beauceant Choir of Emporia Assembly wasintroduced to this National Assembly by Mrs. E. J.Lewis, who had organized and trained them. Theycontributed much to the interest and success of theSupreme Meeting. Since that time the choir hasbeen invited to sing in many Kansas Assemblies. They were sent to Minneapolis, Minn., to NationalAssembly held there in 1937. In 1946ow' BeauceantChoir was invited to St. Louis to help in the pro-grams of Supreme Assembly. They received veryfavorable comments, and surely put Emporia As-sembly on the map. They are invited to attendSupreme Assembly in Columbus, Ohio, in Sep-tember 1947.

Our Assembly has many times been honored bythe Supreme Assembly. In 1924 Mrs. Harry Peachwas appointed Worthy Supreme Standard Bearer. In 1927 Mrs. E. J. Lundy was appointed chairmanof Supreme oourtesy committee in Denver, Colo.In 1928 Mrs. ChaJ'les West was made a member ofthe .Iurfsprudence committee in Denver, Colo. In1932 Mrs. Paul T'urner was honored by being in-vited to open the Supreme Assembly in AtlanticCity, N. J., with a soprano solo. In 1934Mrs. FredScott was appointed to financial committee ofSupreme Assembly in Oklahoma City. In 1935Mrs.M. W. Schottler was named on the CredentialCommittee, and Mrs. E. J. Lewis was appointedDaughter of the Household, at Supreme Assemblyin Emporia. In 1936Mrs. Lewis played for SupremeInstallation services for National Assembly' inDallas, and was named on the Supreme CredentialCommittee. In 1938 Mrs. Alvin Johnston was ap-pointed to serve on Supreme Examining Committeeat Albuquerque.

Mrs. E. J. Lewis served as Supreme Director of'Music in 1941. In 1944Mrs. F. W. Lyons served onSupreme Chartered Assemblies Committee. In 1945Mrs. Lyons was Supreme Standard Bearer for

Supreme Assembly in St. Louis. In 1946 Mrs. E. J.Lewis was appointed Supreme Director of Music, which position she now holds.

True, each of us has left her milestone upon apage of our history, and year after year we haveadded bit by bit until we can look back over thepast and thank God we have had the privilege ofsharing in the upbuilding of our Beloved Order. All that the Order means to us, individually, cannotbe effaced.
