Harry Conway, Gerry McNaney, Henry Scullion Early Membership Card 1945 – Henry Joy McCracken GFC Moneymore A meeting to establish a GFC in Moneymore was held in the Catholic clubrooms on Sunday 20 th May 1945. Mr Basil Guidera Secretary South Derry GAA was appointed Chairman to the meeting and W.J Magee secretary. Mr Guidera explained the object of the meeting and it was decided to form a GFC, the following officers were appointed; Chairman: Mr John McCallion. Vice-Chairman: Mr Arthur Conway. Treasurer: Mr Charles Henry. Secretary Mr Willie Magee. Committee: Messrs. William Scullion, Dan Devlin and Patsy Scullion. Mr McCallion thanked those present for having elected him as Chairman and he said he hoped the club would have every success. A discussion took place regarding the entry fee of each member and it was decided that the fee be 5/0 for the first year and, 2/6 now and 2/6 in November. Any member who wished could pay the 5/0 now. It was decided to hold a Ceili in the A.O.H. hall on Sunday 3 rd June to raise funds for the club. A discussion took place as to what name the club would go under and on a show of hands the club was called the Henry Joys GFC Moneymore. On the motion of Mr B Toal it was decided that whatever members paid their subscription on or before the 3 rd June be called the foundation members of the club. Mr Charles Henry and Mr W.J Magee were appointed to buy four goalposts from Mr Hugh Moran. The subscription of members was £4-4-0. A committee meeting to be held on 27 th May to make arrangements for Ceili and other purposes. 27.5.1945 - First Official Meeting of the Henry Joys. A meeting of the committee of the Moneymore GFC was held on Sunday 27 th May in the Catholic Clubrooms. Mr John McCallion was in the chair. The following arrangements were made regards the 7-a-side football league in the club. The 5 teams be picked from all members willing to play and each team shall consist of 10 to allow for ones not turning up. Messrs; Dan Devlin, Arthur Conway, Eamon O'Hara, Wm. Scullion and Patrick were appointed Captains and Mr Basil Guidera, Mr Eamon O'Hara and Mr Charles Henry were appointed referees. 17.06.1945 A discussion took place regards players of a 7-a-side club league have played foreign games. It was decided that though the club was not affiliated yet that we enforce the rules of the association and that the players concerned be suspended. 16.07.1945 It was decided that the club hold sports at Moneymore on Sunday 12th August, comprising of 7-a-side, camogie, tug-o-war, running, jumping, cycling and other activities, and side shows and Irish dancing 29.08.1945 A discussion took place regarding getting jerseys for the club for Sunday 3rd September. It was decided that we get red & white cross barrelled jerseys if possible and if not that we get yellow jerseys and we get socks to match and that whatever jerseys we get that the goalkeepers jersey be green. It was decided that Mr B.J. Toal be appointed captain of the football team to play in all matches. 9.10.1945 The A.O.H. had granted the use of their hall for a ceili on 21st October. The draw for the Dean McGlinchey cup had been made and Moneymore Henry Joys play Lisnamuck at Moneymore on Sunday 14th October. 28.10.1945 Mr B Toal agreed to see about buses to take players to Maghera match. On the motion of Mr P. Scullion and seconded by Mr A.Conway it was decided that players and subs travel free to all matches while funds permit. It was agreed that the secretary write to the secretary of Cardinals GFC Belfast for transfer of Dermot McNamee. The committee decided to pay Dermot McNaneys bus fare home for all matches. It was decided that we ask Maureen O'Neill to wash jerseys and socks for club. 16.11.1945 Correspondence was read from the Ministry of Finance granting exemptions of entertainment tax duty for all matches of Gaelic Football played at Gaelic Park Moneymore during the seasons 1945/46. 16.12.1945 The delegates from the district board meeting gave a report of the proceedings of the meeting and reported that the Annual Convention of the South Derry District Board be held in Moneymore on Sunday 6th January 1946. The club decided that as it was custom to make tea at the convention and that we ask Mrs Harte to make tea and if

Patsy Scullion was instructed to try and get some football boots in Belfast one pair 5 ½, two pairs 7s and one pair 8s. 24.03.1946 The first Annual meeting of the Henry Joy McCrackens took place on Sunday 24th March 1946. In the absence through illness of the Chairman Mr. John McCallion, Mr Basil Guidera Secretary of the Derry County Board took the Chair. The secretary and treasurers report showed the club to be in good financial position. All officers were unanimously re-elected. Mr John McCallion retained his position as Chairman. 20.01.1947 It was decided to hold the Annual Convention on Sunday 2nd February 1947. It was decided that H.J Scullion and W.J. Magee attend the Annual County Convention of GAA. 02.02.1947 John McCallion was re-elected Chairman and Charles Teague was elected Vice-Chairman, Treasurer Charles Henry and Secretary Willie J.Magee. Assist-Secretary PatsyScullion. Committee Paddy McFlynn, Paddy O'Neill, Henry Scullion, Anthony Stuart. It was decided to hold sports and a 7-a-side tournament this year. 12.03.1948 The fourth Annual Convention was held in the Catholic Clubrooms on Monday Night the 12th March 1948. Mr John McCallion sad that when the club was formed during the year 1945 the critics said a year would do it but now we had been going three years and though we had won no trophies we intended to help the GAA to the forefront in Moneymore and then he called on Mr Basil Guidera to conduct the election of officers. Chairman Sean McCallion, Treasurer Dan Devlin and Secretary W. Magee.

18.03.48 At a committee meeting held on Thursday 18th March 1948 the following team was picked to play Drummullan on Sunday 21st. Joe Devlin, Paddy McFlynn, Barney McFlynn, Billy O'Loane, Arthur Conway, Dan Devlin, Paddy O'Neill, Paddy Harbinson, Paddy Conway, Eugene McCormick, Gerry McNamee, Jerry O'Loane. John A. Moran and Willie McNamee 25.03.1948 It was arranged that we ask Moneymore and Ballinderry camogie to play a friendly on the night of the Ceili.

Committee Tom Moran, Willie Scullion, Jim O'Neill, A.Conway and BTaggart. Captain of the team Mr Willie Scullion and Vice-Captain Arthur Conway. 21.01.1951 Henry Scullion became the Secretary in 1951. Andy Owens, Hugh Jackson, Charles Teague and Joe Devlin joined the committee. Chairman and Treasurers remained the same as 1950. Willie Scullion was elected as team Captain and Arthur Conway was vice Captain. 27.02.1952 Joint Secretaries were appointed as Patsy Scullion and Paddy O'Neill and Joint Treasurers in Henry Scullion and Dan Devlin. Harry Conway remained as Chairman. On a motion proposed by Mick Barr to form a minor team in the coming year the committee decided to call a meeting on Friday 7th March with all eligible minors in the area. 07.03.1952 The Chairman presided at a meeting to form a minor team in which two of the senior committee were given office, Mick Barr and Patsy Scullion. The Chairman then wished the new club every success and told them to live up to the ideals of the GFC and they would get every help from the seniors.

25.01.1953 Henry Scullion became secretary, Paddy O'Neill and Andy Owens became Joint Treasurers and the committee consisted of Hughie Jackson, Mick Barr, Dom Gallagher, Joe Jackson and Paddy Conway 17.01.1954 Harry Conway was re-elected Chairman at the 10th Annual Convention of the Henry Joy's. Henry Scullion remained as Secretary and Paddy O 'Neill as Treasurer. Very Re. B.Donnelly P.P. was elected President. John Devlin and Willie Magee joined the committee 20.02.1955 Mr Willie McKenna became vice-chairman, John Moran, Mick Barr, James O'Neill (Feenan) and Charles Teague were on the committee. The top table of Henry Conway, Henry Scullion and Paddy O'Neill remained.

06.02.1956 Mr Dermot Duffy became Vice-Chairman and Mick Kynes, Dan Devlin and Charles Henry were on the committee with the same top table and other members Mick Barr, Patsy Scullion and John Moran. The team Captain was Paddy Conway and the Vice-Captain was Peter Lynn. Motion proposed by Dermot Duffy and seconded by John O'Neill that members pay 1/= per month to augment funds. 03.02.1957 Harry Conway, Henry Scullion and Paddy O'Neill remained in office. Charles Teague and Emmett Martin joined the committee and Mr Charles Henry became Vice-Chairman. 16.02.1958 In 1958 we had another new Vice Chairman in Mr Charles Teague, The top table remained and Kevin Mulholland, Sean Mallon, Gerry Marshall joined John Moran, Patsy Scullion and Willie Magee on the committee. 01.02.1959 There was a good attendance of members and Mr Harry Conway thanked the secretary and all members for the respect shown at the funeral of his son Paddy, he said it would always live in his memory. He stepped down as Chairman and was replaced by Mr Charles Teague. Harry became Vice-President to Very Rev. B. Donnelly P.P. The new vice-chairman was Basil Guidera. Gerry Marshall was elected Assistant Treasurer. Matt Mc Williams and Joe Canavan joined the committee and Francis Moran re-joined. 19.01.1960 Charles Teague remained as Chairman, Henry Scullion stayed as Secretary and Gerry Marshall became Treasurer. Assistant Treasurer was Sean McCallion. Brendan O Neill was elected team Captain and the Vice-Captain was Dom Gallagher. 29.01.1961

The 17th Annual convention of the Henry Joy McCrackens Moneymore was held in the Catholic Clubrooms in Moneymore. Since last Convention club Secretary Henry Scullion was deceased. A decade of the rosary was said in repose of his soul. Charles Teague was elected Chairman again and he referred to the loss the club has sustained through the death of Henry Scullion and he said Henry's place would be hard to fill in the club. Paddy O'Neill took over as Vice-Chairman, Willie Magee became Secretary, Assistance Secretary was Emmett Martin, and Treasurer was Sean McCallion. Tim McGurk was elected team Captain and Louis McIvor vice Captain. The committee consisted of Francis Moran, Hugh Moran, Mick Kyne, Willie Mulholland, Dermot Duffy and Patsy Scullion. 28.02.1962 Harry Conway came back as Chairman and Charles Teague took up the position of Vice-Chairman. Willie Magee remained as Secretary and he was assisted by Sean Conway. Emmett Martin took up the position of Treasurer and the committee was Peter Lynn, Hugh Moran, Jackie Corey and Gerry Marshall. The Captain was Tom Maguire and the Vice Captain was Seamus Teague. 27.01.1963 Very Rev. B Donnelly was elected again as President, Harry Conway remained as Chairman, Tim McGurk was vice-Chairman, Willie Magee secretary and assisted by Leonard Duffy. Emmett Martin was treasurer and committee members were Jackie Corey, Louis McIvor, Sean Conway and Brendan Devlin. Colm McGuckin was appointed team captain and Jackie Corey as vice Captain.

Camogie in the late 40s and early 50s When the Henry Joys formed in 1945 it wasn't long till the local Ladies were getting into action as well at the Gaelic Park in Moneymore. Although not called the Henry Joys they were a separate club possibly called St Enda's Camogie Club. The following ladies were known to have played Camogie in the late 40s and early 50s; Claire Woods, Rosie Taylor, Henrietta Moran, Margeret McFlynn, Eileen Moran, Bernie Moran, Ethna Moran, June Devlin, Maura McCallion, Mary Brown, Teasie Marshall, Agnes McKee, Kathleen Teague, Bibna Teague, Nan McCann, Peggy O'Neill, Ethna McCallion, Margaret McCallion, Tottie McVey, Gretta McVey, Mary Alice Mulholland, Eileen McNaney and Theresa McNaney
