It is with great sadness that I advise of the loss of Lorraine Arnold in December 2018. Our condolences and thoughts are with Stafford and family, a great loss to all.

December has been a reasonably quiet month re club activities but having said that, our Christmas Party and concours was a great social day enjoyed by all.

The coffee run to Dookie Emporium encouraged about 38 members and 20 odd cars to Dookie for a natter and coffee, thanks to Hugh and Robyn MacFadyen.

Hopefully we will have a report on the ladies’ Christmas lunch and Saturday social day at the clubrooms next meeting on the 10th of January 2019.

Prior to the meeting we have the New Year’s Eve Festival in Mooroopna. Hopefully a report on that event also.

Our Building Committee President Greg Sutherland and Alan Lavis are communicating with a qualified electrician to check the emergency lighting at the club rooms as discussed at the December meeting.

I have also completed the amended by laws that are available at next meeting.

I would imagine all our members would have had their family fix by now, which is the perfect Christmas present, and do hope you are all well and ready for a great New Year.

See you at the January Meeting, and don’t forget Twilight in Nathalia on the 13th of January 2019.

Regards Neil Rutherford

Annual subscriptions were due at the November AGM, so if you don’t receive your paper copy of this Drivers Journal then you’re not financial. You can tell if you’re financial by the address label on your Journal envelope. If your 2019 subs are paid, it will say 2019 in the address. See me or the Treasurer if you’ve got any questions. Direct deposit is the easiest way to pay. Details on how to do this are on page 2.

There are plenty of events coming up that we can attend in our classic vehicles. Twilight in Nathalia is a highlight of the Club year, with usually a very big attendance. Australia Day is usually celebrated in Mooroopna, but the Club supports any member attending similar events in other towns.

Next month’s Journal will also include a current membership list. If any of your details have changed in the last 12 months, send me an email to confirm the new information. (I can also add you to the email list if you weren’t previously on it.) As many people are doing away with their land-line phones and just using mobiles, I will include these in the list. I’m happy to put two numbers in if you and your spouse each have a mobile.

See you at the meeting. Don’t forget to wear your name badge so everyone knows who you are. Brendan Walsh

Hidden Treasure Found in New South Wales!

I have a number of bad habits, one of which is the irresistible urge, when touring, to stop at any place that displays the sign, “Museum.” Over the years this particular bad habit has caused much consternation amongst my travelling companions. Subsequently, on a recent trip to New South Wales, I could not resist the urge to investigate a small street sign that pointed to a “Truck Museum,” off West Street in Gundagai.

On entering what turned out to be the Australian Road Transport Heritage Centre, I was met by Bill Hayward. Now Bill has grown up around trucks and the transport industry. He had an intimate knowledge of all the trucks on display, particularly in relation to the Mack trucks. It was just fantastic to be shown all the trucks and to be given a narrative by Bill on the history of each particular vehicle. There was an extensive display of photographs from a local towing and smash repair firm, J. Luff and Son, which included a very badly damaged Austin A30. I suspect that the driver of the said A30 did not survive the collision with the Commer Truck back in 1956. Bill even went to the extent of unlocking the padlocked external display of vehicles so that I could obtain better quality photographs of the vehicles concerned.

The 1963 Mini 850 pickup conversion (top of next page) was purchased by J. Luff and Son as a sedan in damaged condition in 1966 and converted to a pickup. It was subsequently registered, on full NSW Registration, as a “Lorry” in 1967. It was used on a daily basis up until 1991 by that particular business. This company was multi-talented, as in addition to being the BMC Dealers during this period, they were also building tray bodies, and running a tow truck and smash repair business.

Needless to say, that Bill is one of the volunteers, and if his enthusiasm is any indication, I am sure that the Heritage Centre can only go forward. The Centre is temporarily housed in an old honey factory until they can secure a more permanent site. So if you are passing through Gundagai make sure you visit this Museum. It is only open between Thursday to Sunday between 10.00am and 3.00pm, although Bill stayed until around 4.00pm to make sure I got to see everything. This was the first “hidden treasure,” and many thanks to Bill.

The next “hidden treasure,” if I can call him that, was David Maurice. I was lucky enough to be introduced to David while we were staying in Mudgee. David is the proud owner of a 1968 Isuzu Bellett 1600 GT. David has owned this vehicle since 2005 and has always been a fan of the Isuzu Bellett. Not surprisingly, David is the president of the Isuzu Car club of Australia. David’s car is one of 310 that were imported to Australia, with only 293 being registered. What happened to the remainder is a mystery that David is still investigating. David has owned something like nine Isuzus over the years and before purchasing his GT, he owned a four door Bellett for sixteen years. David had some interesting facts in relation to the Isuzu Bellett. Australia was the biggest market for this vehicle, even more so than the Japanese market.

The Bellett was an “in house” design by Isuzu and it later became the Gemini until Isuzu stopped sedan manufacture to concentrate on trucks. The engine block remained the same, but with an overhead cam conversion. The Isuzu Bellett was also the first Japanese car sold in Australia with four wheel fully independent suspension.

I don’t think I have ever seen a two door GT Bellett, so I would consider them a very rare vehicle. David estimates there are around twenty GT’s in Australia at the moment. His GT is in what I would consider “concours” condition, although David isn’t of the same opinion. The tail lights were reproduced by a friend using a 3D printer. I have no concept of how that process works, but the tail lights certainly looked brand new. The seats have been reupholstered in the same pattern as the original. The engine compartment is immaculate. To aid cooling on hot days, an electric fan has been fitted to the front of the radiator. David

also has an additional set of “Minilite” style wheels and tyres. The stainless steel wheel covers are original and now virtually unobtainable.

Needless to say that David is very careful where he parks this vehicle and hopefully it will be around for many years to come.

December 2018

Page 12

David is also a member of the Cudgegong Valley Pioneer Vehicle Club. The Club has around seventy members. Their major fund raiser is a swap meet at nearby Rylstone, held each year in May. The club has clubrooms at the historic Mudgee Railway Station. In addition to their monthly meetings, every Tuesday between 11.00 a.m. and 1.00 p.m., the authorized office bearers make themselves available to sign historic registration renewals, etc.

I was lucky enough to meet David on a Tuesday at the Railway Station. I was also lucky enough to meet Iain and Cath Stevenson. Iain and Cath have a Riley and a Morris Minor. The “Morry” was the recent recipient of a speedo change from black and white to the correct gold coloured face. The speedo was in mph and after initial fitment, Ian and Cath were amazed when they went for a drive to see that the “Morry” was easily doing a spectacular 80mph! Ian quickly realized something wasn’t right, and he found out that the speedo had been converted to km/h, but still with the mph face!

The next “hidden treasure” was the Colonial Inn Museum at Mudgee. On display are a 1934 Packard Ambulance, a 1912 Empire, and an Austin A40. The Packard was once the private car of the late Sir Frederick McMaster (1873 – 1954), of Dalkeith Station, Cassilis. He donated it to the Mudgee Ambulance service at the end of 1952, as

there was a shortage of ambulances at that time. Not only did he donate the Packard, but he also paid to have it converted into an Ambulance. It was last registered in 1966.

But, the “hidden treasure” you really don’t want to miss is the Gulgong Pioneers Museum, at, you guessed it, Gulgong! David, Iain and Cath all indicated that this museum is something special and they weren’t wrong! The displays were extensive. The vehicles on display included trucks, tractors, motorcycles, a radial aircraft engine and a Cobb and Co coach.

Hidden away was a Leyland truck that looked very much like the Leyland Badger truck used by the outback mailman, Tom Kruse. “Scotty” from the Museum said that unfortunately they didn’t have a whole lot on the history of this vehicle. He said that it had a Gardiner diesel engine, and that the crate on the back of the truck did not belong to the Leyland and was only sitting there for storage. There were no plans to restore the truck unless they could obtain some type of grant. Even by today’s standards I thought this truck looked like a monster. The radiator was unusual in that the vertical round cores were surrounded by carefully coiled springs.

The vehicles are only a small part of this Museum. It has collections of everything imaginable and gives a thorough insight into the history associated with the area. The town of Gulgong was featured on the original ten dollar note, along with the side profile of Henry Lawson, who had a close association with the area. In short, this Museum is not to be missed!

I know that my reports tend to be lengthy, so I will leave the description of the museums at Parkes and Temora for another day, so that you don’t get too bored. New South Wales certainly has its share of “hidden treasure” and this trip only just scratched the surface.

Club Christmas Breakup and Concours, Grahamvale Primary School – 9th December 2018

The function to end the Club year was slightly damp this year, but that didn’t deter the hardier members. A good roll-up enjoyed the day, with the shelter over the netball court keeping us all dry during the occasional shower.

The winners of the Club concours (and front page of the Journal for this year) are listed here. It was a difficult job for the committee to pick the best vehicle in each class, and the people’s choice was also very close. Well done everyone.

Alan was a bit embarrassed last year when his motorbike won the John Hill Trophy with no competition – he thought there should be more motorbikes attending. He got his wish – there were five bikes attending this year!

Santa made a big entrance in the TR4, which matched his jolly red outfit nicely. There weren’t as many kids as in recent years, but those present were pleased to see him.

Congratulations to Sue Borthwick who received the Club Member of the Year Trophy. It was very well deserved for a big year in the Catering Committee.

Brendan Walsh

I’ve added a few names to the attendance list from my photos – I hope I got everyone right!

You might remember the photo of a badge in the June 2018 Drivers Journal that Phame was trying to identify.

After further research, she has found that it was a World War II badge from the Australian Army.

The Australian Women’s Army Service was established on 13 August 1941, to release men from certain military duties for service with fighting units. The Service recruited women between the ages of 18 and 45 and they served in a variety of roles including clerks, typists, cooks and drivers. In 1945, a contingent was sent to Lae and a small group went to Holland. The AWAS was disbanded in June 1947.

From the time of appointment of the Controller AWAS until the end of the war in August 1945, a total of 24,026 women enlisted as volunteers in the Service.

The women who were drivers in the AWAS drove cars, ambulances, trucks up to 3t, jeeps, floating jeeps, Bren Gun carriers and amphibious vehicles, and were often the mechanic and maintenance person for their vehicles.

They were required to maintain log books and, following inspections by the Army Inspection Division, were awarded badges for 5000 miles of safe, accident-free driving. The Army’s Inspection Division in Victoria operated from a depot in Lonsdale St, Melbourne.

The metal badges belonged to the driver, not the vehicle, and would be attached to the front of whatever vehicle that driver was operating, moving the badge as they changed to a different vehicle.

L. of C. Area refers to a Line of Communication. This is the route that connects an operating military unit with its supply base. Supplies and reinforcements are transported along the line of communication. Obviously, it is vital for this line to be secure and open for the military forces to operate effectively.

The Australian War Memorial only has two of these badges in their collection, so they are quite rare. Further information can be found on its website at www.awm.gov.au
